21st Amendment / Elysian He Said (Belgian Tripel)

21st Amendment / Elysian He Said (Belgian Tripel)

The story starts in 2010 when Dick Cantwell walked into our San Francisco pub. We’d heard about his little pumpkin fest and wanted to get together to brew a pumpkin beer like no other: a Belgian-style Tripel brewed with pumpkin, galangal and terragon. In a dark colored can.

2.8 A coriander aroma with a hint of banana, pours a slightly cloudy pale gold color. Taste of coriander with of banana, medium body and a spicy finish.
3.5 Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed on a rainy and cloudy Halloween afternoon while writing music. Appearance is a copper gold with a thin white head. Aroma like champagne, light fruit, yeasty. Taste has coriander, I guess there’s a slight pumpkin spice in this one but I’m not really getting it. It’s alright.
2.0 355ml can. Golden pour, slight haze. This is a pretty shite brew, lots of acetoney type character, just poor.
3.7 From the 12 fl. oz. can that is dated 09/02/15. The pour is pale yellow with a slight haze. Some foam. he aroma has a feint spicy pumpkin character intermixed with bread, dough, cereal, and grass. Body is medium. The taste has a slight herbal and grassy quality but there is a penetrating bitterness that attacks my senses.
3.8 Big pumpkin beer fan and this is a fun and unique one. Pour is a apricot in color with a medium cream colored head. Aroma is bold full of yeast and spices. Full flavor beer that has a tangy, spicy, citrus flavor that is just great mix with the pumpkin.
3.6 Shared 12 oz. cans poured to small snifters, showing a hazed, gold color, with a modest layer of fluffy, then bubbly, white head foam, and some light, web-like lacing. The nose was orange & lemon peel, with some light, ripened fruit nature, subtle, yeasty phenols, plus other light spice hints as ginger & anise, with some mellowing malt. About medium bodied, with decent expression to the carbonation, the taste added a touch of sweetness, a little warmth, and dry, rind-like bitterness that lingered. Standard, not overly refined Tripel, didn’t find any pumpkin, unless it was the ripe fruit note, but found this rather flavorful in the midst of all the other fall samplings of the evening.
3.6 has a bit of a malt belgian style aroma. Taste is a slight candy malt up front with a cinnamon spice aftertaste with some fizzy carbonation.
3.8 Pours a clear amber with a small white head. Smells of pumpkin, hint of clove, leaves. Taste is sweet, moderately bitter, lightly spiced, a bit tart - very complex - pumpkin and bread, with a tart fruitiness and herbal bite with a sweet finish.
3.7 Can at home from 4 pack. Well done for the style. All the usual Belgian notes- spice, banana, clove, pepper, yeastiness- with nice pumpkin undertones. Definitely works as a pumpkin beer. Prefer the baltic porter from the 4 pack. Alcohol is appropriately subtle. Nice.
4.7 magnificent overdone Belgian in every way. heavy clove, pepper and banana and too much everything. enough to make an American proud! Golden orange and sweet the flavors have to crowd in for a chance. no head just a light ring and the pumpkin or i should say pumpkin spice fits in perfectly. a truly great beer. hit the glass again after you drink it and you get more flavor than what is in a lot of brews.
4.6 Appearance: Gold with an Amber Glow. Aroma: Banana, Clove, Bubble Gum, Obvious Belgian Style. Taste: Yam, Pumpkin, Spices, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Sweet Potato Pie with Whipped Cream. Quickly Became One of my Favorite Pumpkin Beers.
3.8 Bright gold transparent gold color with small white head and little lacing. Aroma is all pumpkin- it’s huge! Flavor is pretty good combination of spicy, grassy, belgian yeasts and pumpkin. A little sweet and malty. Good style to choose for a pumpkin beer- very flavorful
3.7 Can. Pours a slightly hazy, pale gold, the color of toasted wheat so-so head and retention. Nose is light caramel, pumpkin, tarragon, band aids. Mouth is medium bodied, light sweetness, pleasantly pumpkiny with some malt, spices and a custard quality. Finishes with some toasted bread. Nice Autumn brew.
3.3 Can. Pours golden with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of yeast, coriander, clove and pumpkin spices. Flavor of pumpkin, yeast, caramel, candi sugar, spices and had some notes of pepper.
3.6 It’s got everything you want in a Tripel, plus the pumpkin and spice hints work real well.
3.3 Santa Clara, Ca. - Santa Clara Liquors - 12 oz can. Slightly hazy medium golden pour, light off white head. Aroma of ginger and coriander. Flavor has some bubble gum notes, some Belgian candii sugar, a touch caramel sweetness. Mouthfeel has a decent crispness to it.
3.6 can. Amber with one finger head. Sweet with pumpkin and belgian spicing. Sounds weirder than the end result, which actually worked quite nicely.
3.8 Pours light golden with a finger of white head. Aroma is light with sweet effervescent citrus character with hints of pineapple, clove, vanilla, and banana. Flavor is similar but with more of a doughiness overlaying the alcohol flavors. This is a nice and aggressive tripel.
3.1 To me this seemed more like a strong lager than a pumpkin tripel plus herbs (which is an interesting idea btw). There was some light molasses sweetness and wheat. The finish warms and tingles the palate nicely. Not bad, but I preferred the porter that this came packaged with.
3.6 Can thanks to Dmac. Pours a somewhat clear golden color with a small white head. Aroma is light pumpkin, fruity Belgian yest, some pumpkin/yeasty spicy fruit notes. Taste is complex, fruity yeast, mild pumpkin spices, pumpkin seed, and some mild sweetness. This is a very solid and unique pumpkin.
3.2 Can, golden beer, white head. Aroma is pumpkin, nutmeg, cider, light malt, banana, peach. Flavor is clove, pumpkin, banana, cinnamon, citrus. Palate is light, carbonation moderately lively.
3.9 At Dorothy lane market. Pours foamy large head with a pale cloudy yellow color. Very mild spice taste for a triple. The spice lingers long after swallowing. Coriander cloves. I don't taste the pumpkin in the description. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
3.5 draft at blue monk, buffalo, ny. solid base tripel, sweet, fruity Belgian yeast, creamy mouthfeel. pumpkins add a new flavor into a tripel for me. Not bad, better than expiated. ligt pumpkin spice, good flavor
3.4 12 ounce can A chance to try a new Elysian beer without trading or traveling to the West Coast does not come along too often. When I noticed this during a shopping run I figured a single would not break the bank. While not the greatest Belgian tripel it was worth about the $2.99 that I paid. I would recommend not paying much more yourself. Aroma / Appearance - A semitransparent golden base bubbles with the typical hue of a tripel made to style. Lively carbonation and sheets of short lived head add some character. Apple cider, nutmeg, and cinnamon float up from the glass like cotton candy dipped in pumpkin puree. Flavor / Palate - Sticky sweet pumpkin accompanies caramel and cider. A dry warm transition leads to a mead like finish that unfolds a wave of booziness over the throat. This collaboration might work better with a different base. As a Belgian it just feels confusing as the earthy squash aspects do not meld with the dessert sweetness of the rest.
3.7 The lighter side of the He Said series, but not necessarily the better side. Sweet notes of Tripel spices and pumpkin gourd. Spicey finish with hints of apple malt. Pretty good.
3.2 Candy. Short, sweet, not long on the memory. Slight pumpkin and more on the other spices. Would not search this one out. It meets the requirements for a triple with other spices. Very low on the pumpkin.
3.5 Pours a clear gold with a short white head. It has a nice aroma of biscuit, cinnamon, and some coriander. The flavor is yeast and spices up front, with a slightly spicy backbone and dry finish.
3.5 (tap) clear bright yellow amber colour with a small white head; aroma starts floral, vegetable, then lilies; sweet flavour developing into a long medium bitter finish; interesting
3.4 On tap at Martin’s West in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is light straw, hay, spicy yeasts. Taste is crisp, biscuity, dry straw... Mild flavors and some spice but was expecting more of the galangal and tarragon. Nothing distinct about this one.
3.8 Love this blend of pumpkin, nutmeg and normal triple essences. Lots of spice in the aroma. Initial foamy head subsides rapidly. Taste comes alive with lots of butter, coriander, floral notes. Velvety smooth, nice spicy finish.
