4.7Bottle, thanks to Tom! Beautiful amber with a lasting ring of foam and nice lacing. This one has lots of character. Huge funk, spiciness (very peppery) and oak. Some light mint and dust. Taste is lemon and cheese, but it is also peppery and very oaky with a light grassiness that makes it feel like cedar. Palate is heavier than most aged lambic but it remains pleasant and unique. I prefer Blauw by an inch, a definite masterpiece.
4.3750 ml bottle shared by ygtbsm94, thanks Brad! Pours a hazy light orange with active carbonation and moderate lacing. Aroma is brett/barnyard funk, straw, hay and pepper. Flavor is overwhelming: tart sourness of lemon, oak, pepper, and other subtle tart fruits. A certain spiciness as the taste develops. Outstanding and delicious. What a treat to have had this beer.
From notes 1/23/10 (Geist Dark Lord Tasting).
4.3This one poured a publish golden yellow with a minimal white head. Aroma was of perfume, hay, mild funk, fruit skins and oak. Flavor was similar, great mouthfeel and Carb, delicate flowers and fruits and rustic character. Pretty great.
4.4Bottle graciously shared by Travlr! Thanks Gene! Pours a slightly cloudy light pinkish color with a slight white foam. Aromas of oak and floral potpourri. Like smelling a flower. There is a slight funk in the aroma but it is all very pleasant. The taste is only slightly sour and everything is at the front of the tongue. Finishes a tad dry but just in time for another sip. Super enjoyable experience drinking this beer. I am glad I got to share this with Gene.
4.3Bottle at DHVL, post blauw. Slightly hazy gold pour with thick lacy white head. Aroma is quite interesting, certainly differs from blauw quite a bit, much more floral, slightly perfumey, nice mellow wet grass funk, light oakiness as well. Taste is citric, mellow funky flavor, grassy, light lactic acidity, a bit of musty oak. Palate is quite typical of the best gueuzes, dry, light bodied, with beautiful soft carbonation. Very nice, yet somehow not quite at the level of millenium, blauw or the other great blends.
4.6Bottle (750 ml) @ De Heeren van Liedekercke. Drank just after Blauw and side by side with Heerengueuze. Bright golden amber with a frothy off-white head and little lacing. Aroma is unique and a bit "heavy" for a Drie Fonteinen gueuze. Floral and perfume with a nice amount of barnyard, juicy, wet basement, funk, mold and lemony notes. Taste is slightly sweet with tropical fruits, floral notes, barnyard, wet basement, light spiciness and leathery notes. Medium body. Lively carbonation. Dry finish. It’s almost as complex as Blauw (which is really really complex), but less bright, fresh and drinkable. Pretty unique gueuze. I enjoyed it a lot! 9-4-9-4-17 = 4.3
EDIT: I tried this one again thanks to a trade with pandebleh! I don’t know if it’s because I didn’t had Blauw just before this time, but I thought it was so much better than last time. We had it side-by-side with OGV ’02 and it was as good if not better. The aroma was astonishing... more minty, fresher and refined than the last bottle I had. It’s stil an "heavy" gueuze, but I think it’s necessary to have that much complexity. Oak, lemon, nice barnyard, spices and funk. Taste is also spectacular though the "heavy" aspect prevent it to have a perfect score. Mint, spice, oak, barnyard, funk... so complex! Medium/full body (for the style). Medium carbonation. Dry finish. Clean. Perfect mild minty aftertaste. Really a unique gueuze. That’s a world-class beverage. Stellar beer. 10-4-9-5-18 = 4.6
4.2Bottle shared at DHVL side by side with Blauw. Pours hazy dark golden with a big off white head. Aroma of barnyard funk, light wet dog and old laundry (in a good way). Flavour is light moderate acidic, fairly soft in the mouthfeel. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Great, but not up to the Blauw.
4.0Bottle(both as j&j roze and akkurats 50/50 ouse gauze). Dark golden pour with tan head. Funky sours, some light floral, and tart fruit aromas. Flavor is funky and has sour tones, albeit a bit milder than the other 3F rarer guezes.
3.875cl, as J&J Oude Gueuze (pink label), retired exclusive brew, thx alot to Dirk for sharing!, complex sour brew, sour/woody and slightly floral/fruity, very balanced, cloudy, good head, very good brew, ’this sample aged very well...’
4.3Bottle poured into a 3F stem. Enjoyed 12/7/2013. Pour is a deep orange, with two fingers of off white, frothy head. Head retains for a while, and leaves some nice lacing. Smell is incredible, and easily the highlight of this beer - bright, juicy tropical fruits (mango, papaya), some lemony bite, and wrapped up in a clean, musty funk (cobwebs, basement, some hay). Taste is impressive, but not as much so as the nose. More tropical fruits that are slightly subdued. A nice lemony bite, and a delicious mineral funk. Finish develops this floral, grassy, perfume aspect that is enjoyable, but mildly offputting. Quite drinkable, with a medium level of sourness. Finish is dry. A top notch geuze that was a pleasure to have, but falls short of Blauw but quite a bit.
4.275cl bottle at Akkurat as Oude Geuze 50/50. It pours a golden/light amber colour with a large white head. Aroma is nice and complex: wet wood, strong funkyness with fruitiness and some spiciness. Nice acidic notes, recalling the classic cheesey and horseblankety notes. Taste is rich with strong funkyness again and tartness with some yogurt-like sweetness. Huge citrus and lemon peel notes. Grassy notes in the background. Some wood and fruit too. Mostly dry finish. Palate is creamy, silky, with good carbonation. So easy to drink. This is rounded, complex, very good but preferred the Gold version tries side by side.
4.0Bottle from a tasting two years ago. Label thanks to Thomas! Thank you! I’ve been looking for this for two years! Pours orange. Nose and taste of aged cheese, woody funk, oak and light barnyard. Medium body. A bit dryer on the palate than Blauw.
4.2750mL bottle at Akkurat, pours a cloudy dark orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out loads of barnyard funk, with more of a floral quality than Blauw; there is some tart citrusy character and some horse blanket. Flavour brings out loads of barnyard funk, some feint leather, a little horse blanket, and some light floral notes. Not as complex as Blauw by a little, but extremely funky and quite floral. Very dry on the palate, with only slight tartness. Another world class gueuze here.
4.5Slightly hazy orange golden colour, firm white head. Aroma of barn, wood, tart, fresh citrus, yoghurt and funk. Sour flavour, citrus, lactic acid, wood, astringent. Astringent finish, wood and citrus.
Lovely beer. Very drinkable, even while 9,5 years old. Bonus point given for the sheer joy of tasting it at it’s home.
(From 75cL bottle @ De Heeren van Liedekercke)
4.3Bottle, thanks to jeffo for picking up, 03/18/2013. Pours golden amber, maybe copper, thin white head settles to few hazy wisps on the surface, thin ring of lacing. Aroma has bitter red fruit, kiwi, soft tartness overall, lemon peel, touch of honey with sour malts, spicy barnyard funk. Taste is spicy, grassy and floral, grapefruit with orange peel and juicy, lightly sour citrus, soft funky notes, mild bleu cheese, oak, dry finish. Light palate, though low carbonation lends some depth. Very different from Blauw which was tasted yesterday- more restrained, less sour, more floral, yet still nuanced by itself with this unique flavor profile. So, outstanding.
4.1Sampled at the CCB/RateBeer/Pre-Hunah Tasting (Tampa, FL). Pours a richer deep hazy amber, good deeper hues in the body. A frothy offwhite head atop dies to a film, laces ok. Darker body. Aromas are tart, a bit more muddled. Lemon, bready malts, funk, and sweet tarts. Some lemon, gentle sweetness, a lot less pop. A rich fruit presence, but less vibrant. Initial is more rich, tart melon and white grape, bigger grapefruit rind and fruit, juice with lemons. Richer tartness, sour fruit. Nice beer, offering funk, straw, gentle yeast and oak into the backend. It lacks the intensity of it’s sibling but still offers really nice flavors. Very nice lambic.
4.3Bottle shared at Mikkeller Bar after Day Two of the Copenhagen Beer Celebration. Pours hazy gold with a fine, white head. Plenty of grassy bitterness in there, lots of softened sourness. A touch musty. Light to medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. A bit of dough. Nice and smooth. Crisp, lightly biting sourness to finish. Great stuff.
4.0Bottle @ akkurat.
Had really big hopes for this one. But there are alot of better geuze out there.
4.3I don’t even know where to begin with the thanks. Sean (Sean9689) decided to pull out this beer I thought I’d never get to try. Massive thanks Sean!!!! 750 ml bottle served in a Portsmouth tulip.
A: Pours a hazy golden amber color with a frothy white head that leaves some sticky, splotchy lace as it slowly makes its way down the glass.
S: There’s really a lot going on in this nose. Sweet and tart berry. Some slight tangy blueberry, sweaty funk and some mild oak.
T: More berry combination. Tart blueberry, sweet strawberry, and a mildly sour lemon grass. Oaky vanilla sweetness with some nice funky after tones.
M: medium to light bodied with a nice carbonation. The finish is drying and refreshing at the same time.
O: Well a huge thanks Sean (again) for busting out this rarity. It was still incredibly delicious and vibrant after all this time and it was treat to have. I’m very happy to have knocked this off my "never going to have" list. But Sean wasn’t done with this one...

4.0it’s a okay geuze! but the blauw is so much better! classic geuze aroma and classic taste, i would rater drink a ordinary 3F geuze anyday!
4.2Bottle at Akkurat (labeled as Akkurat’s Oude Geuze 50/50). Almost clear, orange liquid with minimal white head. Aroma of 3F funk (barnyard, light sweat), sweet orange peel, lemon and some light apple. Taste is dry and medium sour with nice balance and light funk. Light to medium bodied with light to medium carbonation. Nice, but I prefer Blauw. Not as complex but nearly as balanced.
3.9(750ml bottle during RBWG thanks to ericandersnavy) cloudy orange pour with fine white bubbles. Nose of charred wood, currant, tart, delicious. Taste of wet barrel, cranberry, chewable vitamins.
3.7Bottle, 75cl corked. Looking more or less clear in the glass, dark golden in color, and completely without any head. The aroma is funky and barnyardish, with horse blanket and some lemony hints. A faint rubber touch pulls my score from 8 to 7 on aroma, but it’s more or less gone in the flavor, hence the 8. Nice funky flavor with some lemon, as well as horse blanket and barnyard, tart and medium bodied and pleasantly carbonated. A super-smooth and tasteful beer, that’s for sure. 111229
4.4750ml bottle consumed at Akkurat. Pours a hazy, deep orange with some foamy, fading white head. Nose is wonderful, lots of citrus rind, lemon and grapefruit, tons of grass and hay, funky, band aid, some crab apple, white grape. Flavor is tart but not overly acidic, slightly medicinal, refreshing citrus, grapefruit, blood orange, lime, grass, hay, light leather, a little scallion, a distinct wormwood character. Tart, zesty, refreshing finish. Hasn’t aged too much. Drinking wonderfully right now.

750ml bottle at De Heeren van Liedekerke. Pours a hazy, deep gold with a thin, creamy white head. Nose is grassy, musty, funk, lemon rind, herbs. Very inviting. Funk and barnyard, cheese. All of that lovely brett nose while still quite approachable. Flavor is tart, herbal, musty, lemon rind, orange rind, cheese rind, flower pollen, grass. Really has the flavor of an earthy, grassy cheese rind. Full bodied, lightly tart, lightly acidic finish. Worth all the hype, a really special brew.
4.7Bottle @ Stephen’s house, courtesy of skycracksopen. Thanks again! Cloudy orange appearance with an off white head. Quite funky, fairly floral, somewhat herbal, musty, tangy lemon, effervescent aroma. Refreshing, deliciously sour, quite cheesy, floral funky, earthy, dusty, musty flavor. Tons of must and cheese. Fuck yeah.
4.6Pour out of 750 mL bottle, big thanks to Dave! Hazy orange pour with thin to no white head, aroma has notes of big sour apple, tart lemon, biscuity bread, some slight lemon, nice dusty basement, cheesy earthy funk, really nice and balanced. Taste is a nice mix of dusty basement, tart funky fruit, hints of vanilla, sour apple, touch of cheese, some slight hints of earth, finishing fairly tart but more funky with a hint of sweetness. Very tasty.
4.6Rating #400! Bottle at Home with friends courtesy of Dave. Huge thanks for making this one possible man! Pour is hazy copper with a small white head that quickly dissipated. Smell is very sweet, sweet tarts, cobwebs, dust, basement, funk, white grapes, and tannin. Taste is very funky, white grapes, oak, spices, yeast, medium sour, floral characteristics and honey with a lingering tart finish. Mouthfeel is medium with fizzy carbonation. The body has held up really well and this beer is something special. Nicely sour, yet well-balanced, but funky and fruity; just a great beer.
3.9bottle at dak’s 1/22/12
cloudy golden yellow with a small white head.
big perfume-y aroma...mixed with white bloomy cork mold, dust, cob web, grass, skunky noble hops and pithy citrus fruits.
the flavor is the same... very dry. crisp and slick...almost expected it to torch my tongue, but alas. 8/4/7/4/16
3.8Bottle at Akkurat as 3 Fonteinen Akkurat’s Oude Geuze 50/50. It pours lightly hazy golden amber, with a thick white head. The nose is farmyard, cobwebs, musty, sharp lemon, grapefruit, something akin to vomit and hint of sweet honey. The taste is zesty lemon, grapefruit, citrus rind, farmyard, touch of blue cheese, metal, mouth-puckering tartness, rust, hay and underlying honey notes, with a dry, tart finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. A complex and challenging geuze. Interesting for sure, but doesn’t quite stand up to some of Armands other geuzes.
Earlier Rating: 5/18/2012 Total Score: 3.8
Bottle as 3 Fonteinen J & J Oude Geuze Roze, generously shared by The Cad at Mikkeller Bar. It pours hazy golden yellow, with a thick white head. The nose is rather soft: floral, funk, farmyard, lemon and medicinal notes. The taste is white and red grape, soft fruit, red apple, floral, lemon and hints of spice, with a dry, tart finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation and velvety mouth-feel. A very good gueuze for sure, but I would opt for quite a few other 3 Fonteinen options above this.
4.4750 ml bottle shared @ Akkurat. Pours hazy deep golden with a big fizzy slightly grayish white head that is rather quick to dissipate while leaving a small trace on the glass. Smell is sour with horse blanket, leather, sweet grapes, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, hay, dusty barnyard, lemon zest, lemon grass, moist soil, unripe currants, earthy brett and hints of dusty oxidation. Taste is sour and earthy with grapefruit juice, green grapes, gooseberries, red currants, hay, moss, ripe apples and dry wood. Mouthfeel is tart, dry and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sour and tart with grapefruit juice, lemon zest, hay, barnyard and dry soil. Nothing too advanced. Just pure awesome!
