3.4 Bottle. Tin, chocolate malt and chile aroma. Dark brown with minimal head. Sweet earthy chile, light chocolate malt, and straw flavor. Light burn in the finish. Medium body.
3.0 12 oz single bottle from Molly’s Spirits. Dark brown appearance with a small tan head that dissipated to nothing quickly. Aroma of chile peppers, brown sugar, caramel malt and toffee. Similar flavor, adding chocolate, cinnamon, mild earthy bitterness and a light spicy finish. Light to medium body, a bit dull and watery, with a light dry feel. Not awful, but kind of unpleasant and tough to drink. Pairing: Phish - Vultures -> Limb By Limb, from 09/21/1999, Pima County Fairgrounds, Tucson, AZ
2.7 Bottle at Uncle. Pours a cloudy brown with small beige head. The aroma is roast, chocolate, caramel. Medium mouth, very sweet, spice, earthy malt, bitter finish, decent.
3.1 State and Lake, Chicago tap: pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is light chocolate and pepper. Chili taste is not very light in there, and this is not spicy as some beers are, but the flavor is there. Mostly a malty beer that is moderately sweet. Not bad.
3.2 Single bottle from mix pack. Pours a hazy reddish-brown, very thin, soapy head. Aroma of chocolate, yeast, a little vanilla extract. Flavor is very sweet up front, but backs off to something a little more balanced. Pepper component is there in taste, but doesn’t add any spice. Approach it like a brown ale and you’ll probably enjoy it.
3.5 🍺sampled at 2015 Dayton Alefest = Pours dark brown with no head. Slight spice aroma. Initial taste of Coriander with a hint hint of pepper. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
2.7 Draft at Gino’s East on Dearborn. Amber brown pour. Aroma is roasty malts and a bit of earthy chili. Dry, thin, notes of dried chili, coffee, charred wood. Hollow, dry finish. Lacks depth and body. Could use more malt character. Reminiscent of a dry Irish stout.
(Rating #6403)
3.2 Sampler at Mondial de la Biere in Montreal. Cloudy brown body, small white head. Aroma of roasted malt, prunes, chocolate, light smokiness. Taste of brown sugar, prunes, chocolate, burned caramel. Where’s the heat?
3.0 sample at mondial de la bière 2015 - mtl. unclear dark golden with a small off-white cap, some retention and lacing. spicy burnt caramel maltiness, spicy chilies - fresh but still leaving a vegetal matter taste; lightly smoked red berries, salt and other minerals. light carbonation, light body, semi-sweet spicy chili-tingling finish. not chili overdone but unilayered burnt caramel. o-k.
1.9 AROMA - very light Belgian scent. Not too much else. APPEARANCE - very light golden color, totally clear with light head. TASTE - hints of Belgian flavor, but overall a pretty weak offering even for a blonde.
2.7 Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate syrup, caramel), with a note of vanilla, hint of cherry. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. A very simple, flabby/watery, sugary porter. No apparent heat (or odor) from the chiles.
3.5 ブラックエール しっかりした香ばしい香りに、甘さと苦味 わかりやすく美味しい
3.1 Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty caramel aroma. Fruity malty weak spicy caramel flavor with weak hints of chili. Has a fruity malty spicy caramel finish with weak hints of chili.
3.4 33 cl. bottle. Hazy dark amber colour with an off-white head. Aroma and flavour of caramel, malt, herbs, spice and bread.
3.3 Bottled. DArk amber coloured. Unclear. Dense light beige head. Aroma. Caramel, sugar, herbs, some spice, fruits. Flavour. Sweetness, caramel, fruits, chocolate, herbs, sugar. Medium bodied. Ends sweet and caramelly. Lihgt chile bite.
3.4 Bottle at yespr. Hazy red-brown colored with a small off-white head. Sweet and fruity aroma of caramel, bread and chocolate. Sweet and fruity flavor of caramel and chocolate. Sweet finish.
3.2 12 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy dark brown with a deep amber glare and a small tan head. Aroma is toasted malty. Caramelish. Sweet, breadish and light metallic. Toasted and caramelish finish.
3.2 Pours a very dark brown color with a modest, quick fading, light tan head. Aroma has a sweet molasses and malty nose, light toasted notes with a touch of chocolate. Flavor starts off with a very sweet molasses kick followed up by a nice sweet/toasted malt combo and finishes with a light peppery touch. Body is low in carbonation, smooth with a light sugary feeling and light heat from the pepper. Overall not a bad brew. The pepper doesn’t dominate the flavor and add just a touch of heat which works very nicely with this brew.
2.7 I really had high expectations for 5 Rabbit 5 Vulture based on other 5 Rabbit brews I’ve had, but this one definitely didn’t deliver. Drank in recommended tulip glass. Tan head dissipates very quickly on top of the dark pour. Not much aroma -- maybe a hint of caramel. Taste is sweet and syrupy -- kind of like a Coke that has been sitting around. There just isn’t enough of the ancho chile notes to claim it is there. Very little heat. Given what I paid for a six pack, I am disappointed with 5 Vulture.
3.6 The aroma is sweet and spicy with hints of fruit and chocolate. The appearance is brown with a small head. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is smooth. Overall a killer beer.
3.2 Tallahassee, Fl - New Leaf Market - 12 oz bottle. Pours a lazy dark brown, little to no head. Aroma has some interesting earthy notes with some peppers and topsoil. Flavor is earthy as well with some bittersweet baker’s chocolate, some peppery accents, a touch of day old black coffee. Mouthfeel has a decent thickness to it. Not half bad.
3.6 I think this beer deserve a better rating. Light malt aroma, caramel with spice. Good flavor...sweet roasted malts and of course the ancho chilies come through on the finish.
3.7 6 pack from Wallaby’s. I really enjoyed talking to these guys at GABF and I loved their beer, so I was stoked to see 5 Rabbit on the shelves out here. This beer is a very dark red with a small head. Chili is there, but I could use more. It’s a sweet smelling beer with notes of cola, toffee and a bit of chocolate. The palate is medium with pretty active carbonation. Anchor chili comes out more in the flavor, which provides nice balance. I could still use more pepper and definitely a little more heat. Still, it’s a nice beer. A malty, sweeter, well balanced ale.
3.1 Well, anything featuring a buzzard on the label can’t get high marks for appearance. Dark brown with fine carbonation. Malty, doughy aroma with some acidity and roast. Tangy, brown sugar and molasses tones, slow burn spicy. Slightly heavy body. Standard 12 oz longneck. New Leaf Market.
1.5 I give them credit for trying something different with the ancho chiles, but it just doesn’t work.
3.4 Bottle from Binny’s in Bloomingdale, IL. Dark cola pour with a small ring head. I really like the aroma on this - malty, hint of chocolate, and some chili spice. Taste is pleasant - mild roast, mild sweet, and again a hint of the roasted chili late but not spicy hot or anything. Decent brew.
3.9 Poured from the bottle of a six pack into a pint glass, smells sweet like malt, good negra. As is with most good cooking when anchos are used the spice makes an appearance about 15 seconds after the drink and makes a spicy and salty mouth feel that makes one instinctively take another drink. I always use a bottle of beer in my chili and I’m saving the 6th from this pack for my next one, can’t wait.
3.1 Better than its 44 point rating if you ask me. Dark brown color. Aroma is malty, similar to a porter. Taste is similar to a lighter porter, malty, chocolate, with a tiny bit of sourness, very little hops and a tinge of chile spiciness, but not very much. It’s OK.
