(512) Whiskey Barrel Aged Double Pecan Porter

(512) Whiskey Barrel Aged Double Pecan Porter

This is a bigger, bolder version of our mainstay Pecan Porter, with a richer finish. Two months on recently emptied Jack Daniels select barrels imparted a wonderful vanilla character from the oak and a pleasant amount of whiskey nose and flavor.

3.4 2014 bottle. Brown with tan head. Nutty chocolate nose, little bit of barrel and whiskey. Taste gives nuts, light coffee, medium dark chocolate, mellow fruity whiskey notes. Medium mouthfeel, a little thin perhaps. Nuts and light barrel linger. Pretty decent, but I prefer the standard pecan porter if I'm honest (especially given the price point here)
3.9 Bottle opened up at the 2014 Ottawa End of Year Gathering. Dark brown with huge frothy mocha head that disappears fairly quickly. High carbonation, mild+ body that goes down easily, sweet, dry, vanilla, nutty (can’t say pecan but we did have a debate about pecan vs. walnut although they were subtle), oak, slightly bitter, some chocolate, light and fresh. Tasty.
3.8 Bottle: Poured a deep black color porter with a nice light brown foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt notes with black chocolates with subtle pecan notes. Whiskey notes are also easily noticeable and provided a nice smooth finish to the beer. Body is a bit thinner then I was expected with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very nice beer but can’t say that pecan are as apparent as I would have expected.
4.8 caramel, coffee, leather, leaves, earthy, vanilla, smoke, black, medium sweetness, full body, creamy, average carbonation, long finish, An exceptional, damn hard to find, example of a whiskey barrel aged ale. Superb with a chocolate silk cake or even a chocolate mousse.
4.1 Really liked this. Pours dark, pitch black as a big gusher. Nose is big molasses. Flavours are very boozy, lots of sweet syrup, some nutella. Tastes big sweet, medium bitter. Oily body, light carbonation. Big beer, well done.
3.6 A deep dark porter with a thick frothy dark brown head. In aroma, bitter herbaceous chocolate, coffee grind, musty character, powdery character, interesting. In mouth, a nice bitter sweet chocolate with coffee grind, licorice notes, a bit dry, light bourbon, nice. Bottle at 2014 Ottawa Xmas gathering.
2.7 2012 Vintage From notes. Tasted some time near the summer of 2012 from a bottle. Pours completely opaque dark brown with a massive brown head that slowly recedes to thick, messy lace. The nose is nutty with some maple, vanilla, and banana whiskey. The flavor is the same, not giving me a whole lot, and really put off by the amazingly high amount of carbonation. The body is full with over-active carbonation and a long nutty and whiskey finish. Disappointing given the hype.
3.8 750ml bottle in a tulip. Pours black with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, some pecans, some light whiskey and oak, hints of chocolate, and some dough. Flavor the same with a nice blend of everything. Average texture. A solid beer.
3.7 Bottle thanks to Phresh. Pours coca cola brown tan head. Nose/taste of whiskey, oak, pecan, toast and chocolate. Lighter bodied. Over-carbonated.
3.6 Bottle. Dark pour with tan head. Malty, nutty, oak, and bourbon aromas. Pecan, spice, malt, sweet and bourbon flavors.
3.8 "Good use of pecan here. Flavor and aroma really nice...the feel is a little light and prickly for the style, but otherwise this was a nice blend of roasted malt, whisky, and pecans."
3.7 Sample at First Sunday. Whiskey flavors of wood and a bit of oak. Pecan is light here but present and definitely not as sweet as I was anticipating something called "pecan pie" to be. Not a bad thing at all in fact I prefer a more subtle nuttiness to an overly sweet dessert bomb. Nice blend of flavors come together here to make a decent beer.
3.6 Bottle split at Bruce’s pad, thanks to Jackl, 12/05/14. Black with a moderate tan head that retains well. Nose is roast malt, bourbon, dark toffee fudge, chocolate, light charr. Taste comprises dark roast, spice, dark fruit pangs, cocoa powder, subtle BA effect. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a shallow bourbon rinse. Decent enough BA imperial, subtley done, not a huge level of complexity but a nice enough sipper.
3.5 Serving: 22 oz. bottle. It pours almost black with a small, off white head. Definitely some nuttiness in the nose with a hint of wood and booze. The flavor carries forward the same with a mix of vanilla, wood, and nuttiness. There is a faint paper note on the back end. Fairly thin on the tongue. Interesting.
3.6 On tap at the Holy Grail Pub. Poured a dark brown, mahaugany when light shined on it, thin khaki top, no laceing. Tasted mostly whiskey, slight roasted malts, faint pecan. Low carbonation, medium body. Overall I wish the pecan and malts were more pronounced.
3.5 Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Jack. Pours deep brown with a staunch, foamy beige head. The nose has toasted marshmallow, burnt wood. Medium sweet flavor, some dark fruits, burnt wood, toasted bread. Full bodied with average, creamy carbonation. Lightly warming finish, some tangy dark fruits, milk chocolate. Interesting.
3.3 Bottle thanks to Jack. It pours dark brown with a small tan head. The nose nose is rich, roasty, earth, manure, milk chocolate, dirt and earth. The taste is bitter, roasty, tangy, nut, wood, earth, spice, light vanilla, toffee and candy with a dry finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Too sweet for my liking. A small pour is enough for me....
3.7 Sampled at DLD 2014. It poured a black color with a small tan head. The aroma was of nuts, chocolate and whiskey barrel. The taste was roasted malts with nutty chocolate, coffee with bourbon hints and a vanilla finish. Very nice.
4.2 Very nice. Perfectly aged -- a hint of the barrel without overpowering the delicate pecan flavor in the porter. Only negative here for me is that the carbonation is just higher than I like for this style. But, a quibble.
3.2 Sweeter than the original Pecan Porter. Some vanilla and whiskey on the nose. Nuts, vanilla, whiskey, and oak on the palate. Not overly impressive for a barrel aged beer, kind of thin mouthfeel.
3.4 Dark black, red edges. 1 finger coffee head. Super boozy. Very creamy mouthfeel. It really is super nutty!
3.4 2012 bottle. Aroma has a moderate chocolate note with medium high dark fruit character. Medium light bourbon notes. Dark fruit is cherry, plum and prune. Light roast notes. Medium light but character. Pours a dark brown, almost black with a big, medium thick, mocha head that recedes fairly quickly but then a small head lingers throughout. Medium light lacing and moderate legs. Flavor has moderate roast notes with medium light dark chocolate. The fruit character of the aroma is lighter with only hints of dark fruit. Light bourbon character with a moderate nuttiness. Finish has some bourbon and alcohol spice along with some roast malt notes. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium high to high carbonation. Medium low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall an alright beer but it has room for improvement, especially in the mouthfeel category. It is too thin and the overly high carbonation just accentuates this. I’m also not sure I really like the pecan character.
3.8 Bottle, shared at the Boxing Day tasting at TimE’s place in Calgary. Red brown with a lively brown head. Chocolate and pecan aroma and flavour, not overly sweet which is a huge plus. Light maple syrup, subtle barrel traits. Finishes dry. Surprisingly elegant.
3.8 Dark brown color. Sweet malty pecan pie nose. Really smooth and silky. Malty smooth mouth, fairly sweet but enjoyable. Nice. But boozy.
3.8 Bottle - Pecan, bourbon and vanilla. Jet black with a stunning brown head. Pecans, big whiskey notes and some chocolate malts. Great for the pecans. Draft - Most of the boldness is lost, almost castrated. Bottle is much better.
4.0 Dark beer. Big brown head. Boozy pecan flavour. Tasty. Exotic. 2013 Christmas tasting.
3.6 Bottle shared at Lightening Day. Thanks! Pours a deep blackish hue, darker and well murky body. Some gentle legs. Subtle brownish edges and bottom. A frohthy tannish head dies to a thicker ring, laces ok. Aromas are cocoa, carmelized malts. Toffee, caramel, gentle oak and vanilla. Touches of nutty earth, sugar pecans, and gentle sweetness grows. Touches of sweetness, carmelized sugar, bourbon and vanilla, wet oak, some acetaldehyde crops up as it settles down a bit on the nose. Initial is a bit lighter in body, well carbonated with vanilla, sugary pecans, carmelized malts and toffee. Some toast, vanilla, cocoa, and some gentle coffee. Middle is vanilla, a bit of toffee and sweetness. Not thick, a bit thinned with vanilla, gentle spirit and barrel. Some toffee, toast, carmelized malts and sugary pecans. Backend is a bit sugary, mellow barrel. A bit sweeter back here, but some gentle flashes of acetaldehyde offer some mellow influence. Finish is a bit carmelized, sugary, mellow oak and warmth. Solid stuff. Not full or thick but nice flavors overall. Solid stuff. Acetaldehyde is gentle, and something I’m not as turned off by, but is definitely there.
3.9 2011 Bottle pours a dark brown black with a large tan head. Aroma is strong of whiskey, vanilla, and the dryer and of pecans. Taste of sweet vanilla, whiskey not as strong as aroma lets on, light pecan, and roasted coffee on the finish. Nice!
1.8 Let me say this: this could be a solid BASE porter, or maybe even wort. Pecan it is definitely not. Double Pecan? That is pure fantasy. Roasty but astringent malts dominate. Faint whiskey heat. Fades into a medium bitterness. Thin, kind of oily on the palate. I was really disappointed with this beer. Call it a basic porter and it’d get a rating in the 3s somewhere.
