8 Wired Saison Sauvin

8 Wired Saison Sauvin

Saisons have been around for ages. Traditionally brewed by Belgian and French farmers to provide refreshment during harvest. I’m guessing that flavour wasn’t a main concern back then; the priority was to provide a beverage that was safe to drink, because water usually wasn’t. Never the less, over time they developed a beverage chrarissed by beer geeks of the modern world. The alcohol content was low, so the workers could consume enough to keep hydrated and still perform their job: To load the barn with enough barley for next years brewing season. I bet these hardworking, humble farmers never imagined, that centuries later, their style of brewing would inspire brewers from all over the world.
As all our beers, this is a very modern, you might say new world, interpretation of this style. Based on the tradition we have used a French Saison yeast, which provides a plethora of funky, earthy, very "Belgian" flavours. From there we have upped the ante a fair bit by doubling the amount of malt, and thereby the alcohol, and loaded the kettle with punchy Nelson Sauvin hops.
Unlike the original, this is not a beer meant to be drunk by the gallon. Moderation is the key for full enjoyment of all great beers.

3.9 A: Slightly cloudy light orange with a big, dense white head. N: Lime zest, pineapple and freshly cut grass. T: Strong bitterness and just a hint of acidity. Grapefruit juice, a medley of citrus zest. P: Medium-thin. O: Absolutely loved this beer, very complex and pleasing to the palate from first sip to last.
4.0 0,33l bottle at home. BB 14.07.2018. golden clear shiny color, rather big white head. smells flowery, peppery, yeasty, citric, grassy, light funk, some fruity notes, light mango, peach. very nice smell. full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes flowery, citric, grassy, light yeast, light sweetness, some exotic fruits, light berry notes. finishes medium dry with notes of grass, citrus and light sweetness. very nice one, lovely balance very easy and great to drink. lovely dry notes.
2.4 Very hazy and orange color. Smells like bad cheese rinds but certainly tastes better than the smell. Baffling, but probably better with food.
3.9 On tap at Lager Lager Berlin. Comes with a hayz yellow color and a nice white head.. The nose is pine, sweet fruits like peach or apricot, some grapes and belgian yeast. The taste follows the nose, but the fruits are sweeter than expected. Some floral and some herbs and a nice hops. At the palate some citrus. Nice and dry bittersweet finish.
3.3 Slightly hazy yellow beer with nice frothy head on top which leaves beautiful lacing to the sides of the glass. Aroma has Belgian yeast, spice notes, sweet fruits too. Taste is kinda basic saison, yeast dominates, sweet fruits. Medium body and highish carbonation. Wanted more Nelson Sauvin. Saison is hard to make distinguishable.
4.3 Wilder Chinafooddryspiceman with Attitude. Es muffelt und schleckert aus allen Ecken. Der Trunk ist verheft, hocharomatisch und Sourdry. Hossa. Buddel from BREWDOG Berlin.
3.9 Wonderful aromas bursting of pine, fresh fruit, bubblegum, spices and some funk. Pours the typical hazy yellow color with a little bit of lacing left behind. The flavors were not as pronounced the aromas but good nonetheless. There is decently strong bitterness at the end with a relatively low carbonation. This is one of the best Saisons I’ve had.
3.6 330 ml bottle bought at Great Food Hall in Pacific Place, Admiralty. Looks: Translucent golden honey colour with a layer of dirt-like yeast sediments; One finger head with crumpety white foam which lasts for 2 miutes; Excellent sticky lacing with very slight carbonation. Aroma: Fragrant and sweet malt, with strong peaches, white grapes, dew melons, honey, strong floral, sugar and strong Bel yeast. Taste: Medium sweet Pils malt, with light yellow fruits, white grapes, floral, sugar, light funk, strong spices, light biscuits, strong Bel yeast, lemon, medium bitter hops and grass. Body: Medium body. Slick and quite creamy palate. Mouth Feel: Very good Pils maltyness in solid background, smooth and creamy. Good white grapes and flowery hops form NS. Medium sweetness with light funk and good spicyness. Strong Bel-yeasty with lemon to round. Very good! Hoppiness: Strong peaches, white grapes, dew melons, honey and strong floral in nose. Yellow fruits, white grapes, floral, lemon, and grass in taste; Bitterness is strong for a lasting, high astringent bitter-sweet malty finish. After Taste: Quite dry. Fruity, spicy and strong bitter to mouth. Comments: Compares to Allendale’s Sauvin Saison, this one’s NS hops is not as in-yer-face but still has very impressive viney, fruity aroma and taste. Added rich maltyness, strong carbo, and slighty funky but good spicy Bel yeast, and you have a very hoppy, tasty and fulfilling Saison. Love it!
4.0 500ml bottle pours a golden color with a bit of head. Fruity Belgian yeast flavors. Nice hop balance. Refreshing.
3.7 Gold, opaque, weak white head. Smell is light citrus with subtle vanilla, resin, kiwi, pineapple and lychee. Tastebis watery bitter, very refreshing with a full astringent finish. Nice fizz, very good!
3.5 33cl bottle at home from Mitra, Maarssen. Nose is fruity, yeasty. Body is opalescent yellow, head is big, white, rocky, mostly lasting, excellent lacing. Aroma is tropical fruits, honey, yeast, vegetables, grass, lanyard. Medium sweet, medium bitter, light fruity sour, light umami. Finish is medium lasting hoppy medium bitter, medium umami. Light body, creamy texture, average carbonation. Quite easy, weird, more hoppy then most saisons, nice one.
3.8 Keg at Brewdog Shepherds Bush, London. A hazy golden coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Fruity, citrus, yeasty, tropical fruit aroma. Tastes fruity, citrus, yeasty, tropical fruit, some spice and slightly sweet. An elegant brew from this excellent brewery.
3.4 Keg at Brewdog as 8 Wired Saison Sauvin, 7%. Hazy orange, translucent, still, foamy ring of white head. Aroma is spearmint, chalky, laundry powder. Body is light, spritzy carbonation, frothy. Taste is crisp and clean, more semi-musty and semi-clean soapy notes, minerally, stones, dry into the finish with some spice. Powdery, mint bonbons, icing sugar. That sort of vibe. Quite nice. Very Nelson Sauvin. Almost too minerally and carbonic.
3.7 Bottle from honest brew. Appearance is cloudy and gold to orange. Medium white head. High carbonation. Medium bitterness. Aroma and flavour is spicy, earthy, yeasty, hops, orange, pineapple, fresh leaves.
4.0 Aroma: Medium/heavy aroma of malts, fruit, melon, grape, hops, citrus and Saison yeast. Appearance: Hazy/turbid yellow/golden beer with a medium white/off-white head. Taste/Palate: Starts medium sweet with malts, fruit, melon and grape; ends slightly bitter and slightly/medium dry with hops, citrus and Saison yeast. Overall: This beer is intense, complex and balanced. Great amount of Nelson Sauvin hops, creating a perfect soft fruity flavour. Great Saison that does everything right.
4.0 Keg BD Edinburgh. Pours slightly hazy gold. Musty cheesy acidic citrus aroma. Bigger mouthfeel than most saisons, benefits from the higher abv. Big citrus hit in the taste, with a nice bready yeasty follow through. Lovely.
4.0 Bottle. Golden color, cloudy liquid, white head, heavy carbonation. Aroma of citrus, wheat. Light sour, nice.
3.7 Draught @ Mikkeller Bangkok. Hazy bright yellow with large foamy whitish head, lemon flower aroma, medium carbonation, lightly citrusy faintly bitter taste, thin body, medium bitter finish. Very tasty and refreshing.
3.7 Light smell with some complexity...taste is very good with malt and spices, perfect balance and medium boldnesss...but smooth as well. Lots going on...all positive :) just lacking a strong aroma
3.6 500ml bottle from the Golden Vineyard off-license, Greenwich. Golden colour with a thin white foam head and fragrant floral fruity apricot funky aroma. Taste is grains, tangy fruity, white wine, with some funky, yeasty notes and floral hop earthy bitterness. Foamy mouthfeel, medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry tangy bitter finish. Quite drinkable.
3.7 Bottle from the Good Spirits Co. Wine & Beer. Pours a slightly hazy pale gold, with a big fluffy white head. Nose is saison yeasty, spicy. The Sauvin hops don’t really come through on the nose. Taste is fruity and yeasty, with a little spice in the finish. I think the fruitiness is more hop than yeast derived. Palate is light bodied despite the 7% ABV, with gentle carbonation, and an odd finish: nearly everything goes away quickly, except the yeastiness. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it’s that lovely saison yeast. Excellent.
3.6 Bottle from Rehills of Jesmond. Pours a slightly hazy straw colour with a big frothy white head. Aroma of hay, citrus and yeast. The taste has plenty of slightly peppery spice over earthy yeast flavours with hay and a little tropical fruit. Light and refreshing. Nice.
3.8 Lovely looking, great aroma and a lovely set of tastes that wash over, from that earthy note, the the under bitterness and the sugariness from the malt. Lovely drinking a beer like this and pretending summer is coming....
3.7 Bottle, courtesy of SinH4. A hoppy saison indeed. The farmhouse works well with the typical grass of Sauvin. Lively carbonation on a sweet beer with a decent bitterness. Refreshingly light body, dry. Nice.
3.9 Bottle. Hazy gold. Lots of grape in the aroma with some peach and passionfruit. Earthy, winey taste. Plenty of funk and a great showcase for Nelson S hops. Nicely balanced between the yeast and hop flavours. Dry, peppery finish. Lovely.
3.4 500ml bottle. Pours a pale golden color partly cloudy with a frothy head. Tastes like what youd expect from a belgian beer with a slightly fruitier finish.
4.1 Taster at Mikkeller Seoul. Very pale, even for a saison, and the sauvin hops dominate the aroma. The flavour is grassy and sweet, just like sauvin hops, but there’s a good background of funkiness too. This is a really well thought out beer.
4.3 Pale yellow, lingering head. Aroma vinegar, cork and oak chips, lime juice. Palate medium, low carbonation. Taste passion fruit, pineapple, chardonnay-like sour finish. Sweet and fruity, rich finish. Very nice actually.
4.1 Bottle, Many thanks to brewtalita. Hazy golden colour, white head. Aroma os nice hoppy, tropical, passionfruit, grapes, funky yeasty. Fresh. Tempting. Taste is very refreshing too, hops, fruity, tropical, passionfruit, funky. Bisquity malty tones. Very good drinkability. Very good.
