Abita 25th Anniversary Vanilla Double Dog

Abita 25th Anniversary Vanilla Double Dog

Turbodog is the inspiration for this robust dark ale. It is brewed with generous amounts of pale, caramel, and chocolate malts and Willamette hops. Whole natural vanilla beans are added during the aging process. This combination provides a rich body and color with chocolate, vanilla and toffee-like flavor.

25 years ago Abita Brewing was founded on a pristine artesian aquifer north of New Orleans. For a quarter of a century, Abita has proudly brewed full-flavored ales and lagers. We thank our loyal customers for their support and pledge to continue the tradition of brewing excellence.

3.0 Pours a dark mahogany brown color with a small head. Nose is more chocolate and malt, but mild. Taste more like a sweet brown ale, as it warms, becomes sweeter with the vanilla punching through. Drinkable but not packed with flavor by any means. Quaff Score 6 / 10
3.3 Pours brown with a beige head and sweet vanilla, roasted malt aroma. Taste is sweet as well, with vanilla that comes through more as beer sits, with chocolate, roasted malt, and caramel and a sweet, roasty finish. Drinkable solid ale
3.1 Dark brown-amber pour with a tan head. The aroma has a lot of toffee, chocolate and vanilla notes. The flavor is more of the same with some toffee, grass, earth, cocoa and vanilla. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.5 Draft. HOTB. Dark black color. Medium size head. Aroma of vanilla coffee, caramel. Taste is vanilla, toffee. Creamy texture. Slightly watery. Still has nice full flavors. Tasty.
2.9 Better than expected for a strong ale. metal aroma. vanilla makes this a little fruity in nature. much better than expected. actually quite like able. more refine than anticipates. I can appreciate this stuff. Not over the top for a vanilla beer. well done.
3.5 Poured from 22oz bomber into a snifter with a nice 2 in mocha colored head that subsided rather quickly. The beer is a rather dark brown and there appears to be yeast sediment (bottled conditioned beer?) Aroma was a bit of vanilla and caramel but not too strong. Mouth feel is pretty thin, this has been slightly oxidized it seems. Taste is good Nice roasted malt flavor with some chocolate flavor and vanilla undertone, not too sweet. Overall a tasty beer but nothing to write home about. It works good as a dessert beer
3.1 Bottle:   Deep cola, moderate to large foamy tannish head, nice lacing.   Strong sweet honeycomb biscuity malt aroma, with a bit of honeysuckle and vanilla.   Really biscuity on the tongue, lots of honeycomb like cereal, slight vanilla.   Seems pretty sweet, thankfully while not being sticky.   Body and mouthfeel remains moderate.   Strong honeycomb biscuity malt finish.   I am kinda surprised I finished this whole 22oz bottle.   Its at that line where you aren’t sure if you can drink any more because its sweet with lots of that honeycomb cereal like flavor, but luckily its not sticky.   Tiz okay, but could use a little hops to balance it out a bit.
2.2 Pours dark with beige head. Not much aroma. A weak chocolate taste that quickly dissipated from the palate. Probably will not buy this again.
3.9 Very sweet but smooth taste. Certainly drink again. It was a dark ale but tasted sweeter than it looked. Naturally with vanilla in it
2.8 650ml bottle. Pours a clear, and VERY dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is kind of tainted by a sort of rotten fruit smell, with some molasses, dark malt, dried fruits, and something that makes me think corn snacks. The taste isn’t much better. Cocoa with dark malt notes, faint sour fruit, a strange burnt taste, faint vanilla, faint hazelnut, yeast, big alcohol in the middle followed by some sweetness, and a bitter burnt chemical finish. It’s not getting any better as it warms. Total flavour clash. Help.
3.0 pours dark brown with beige head. aroma is vanilla, caramel, and butterscotch. taste is mostly vanilla toffee; coffee and hops linger in the background, too. finishes slightly bitter.
3.6 Good, not great. Deep brown to black with a tan head. Aroma if malt, chocolate and vanilla. Tastes like a bitter tootsie roll with a bit of vanilla.
3.0 Draft. Deep black color. Vanilla, malt and chocolate. Very sweet with a boozy after bites. I'm glad I tried it. Happy maradi gras
3.6 Draft to taster. Looks solid; cola with foamy light beige head that slowly dissipates into lacing. Smells of chocolate, vanilla, caramel, and roasted malt. Tastes like it smells with a nice, smooth mouthfeel. Good beer.
3.5 Tap. Murky reddish brown pour. Vanilla comes pouring out of this one - aroma and flavor. Very tasty. Medium density palate.
3.5 Wow, very sessionable for an "american strong." The mouthfeel is actually pretty creamy and enjoyable. A decent bit of vanilla but certaintly not a slap in the face. For a beer that’s basically an imperial abita turbodog with a hint of vanilla.
3.0 Nice deep brown in color with an off-white head. Aroma is very much like a tootsie roll. Chocolatey taste (tootsie roll-esque) with some vanilla in the finish. A niceroasty ale but not my preference.
3.8 Pours a slightly misty brown/burnt orange, with fingers of off-white head. Smell is of grainy dough, well defined caramel malts, with slight notes of vanilla and even some red fruits. Taste starts with grainy wheat, and unsweetened vanilla, with light notes of bitter toffee on the finish - very subtle English hops (although the hops therein are technically American). Mouthfeel is medium.
4.6 vanilla, caramel, chocolate, coffee, black, hazy, minimal head, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, lightly sour, full body, thick feel, average carbonation,
5.0 Another great beer from Abita. Bit to much vanilla; well balanced. A favorite.
3.8 22 oz Bottle. Pours amber in color with a white head. Notes of chocolate, oak, caramel, spicey hops. Really good.
3.5 22oz bomber pours mahogany colored body that supports a mocha head of foam. The mild aroma has light notes of dark roasted malts, vanilla and then a touch of earthiness. The taste has some roasted malts mixing with vanilla and then earthy to slight pine hop like notes. Underneath those I get a light sweet dark fruity ester like quality.
3.7 Pours a dark, almost black ruby red color with a dark khaki head with little retention. Aromas of toffee, chocolate & vanilla. Mouthfeel and taste is like it smells....with a very nice smooth vanilla finish. Reminds me of a vanilla porter. Very nice, quite enjoyed this one alot.
3.1 Bottle. Vanilla, chocolate, malted milk aroma. Dark brown with a small beige head. Chocolate, malted milk, and coffee flavor. Medium body, slightly chalky mouthfeel.
2.8 Bottle. Woody vanilla and chocolate malted milk ball aroma. Dark chestnut with minimal head. Chocolate malted milk ball flavor. Sweet but not a bad beers, especially for Abita.
3.2 22 oz bottle from Rouses Market in New Orleans, Louisiana, served in a wine glass. Pours hazy chestnut with a small tan head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a trivial amount of lace. The nose has notes of molasses, nuts, chocolate, coffee and vanilla, along with lager yeast and a touch of earth. The flavour is quite sweet, with caramel malts, molasses and chocolate. There are also notes of coffee and a slight hop bitterness provides some balance. The finish is long and malty with molasses and chocolate. On the palate, it is medium in body with a smooth, milky texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this ale has a nice aroma but the body and back side disappoints. I would have liked a bigger flavour and more complexity. 2012-04-29
4.5 Dark brown with a tan head that drops quickly. Aromas of chocolate shavings, hints of roasted coffee, slight compliment of vanilla. Flavors of creamy chocolate ice cream mixed with vanilla, slight hop bitterness. Slick, coating mouthfeel.
3.5 Love this one. Medium tan head, hints of vanilla and chocolate. I’m lovin’ the vanilla finish, and the increased ABV is hidden well.
3.2 ruby brown color, aroma of bread, toast, vanilla, slight chocolate, coffee notes, same flavors, drinkable but nothing exciting
3.0 660ml bottle shared with czar, minderbinder and friends. Pours a ruby, dark brown with a short lasting white head. Smells like something acidic...green apple? Taster is roast, grilled. Dry bread. Subtle vanilla. Finish is tart, some earthy, English hops. Light to medium body, somewhat oily mouthfeel. Not a super dark...kind of disappointed.
