Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established ‘SOS – A Charitable Fund’ that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill.
The fund has pledged that 100% of all money raised will go to charity. In addition, the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board will play an important role in advising where the money can do the most good. An advisory committee is being established as the donation process and grant procedures are finalized.
The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75¢ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle...a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75¢ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.

3.022 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy yellow with a small white head. Aroma is light spiced and herbal. Bitter, dry malty and light spiced. Bubblegum, light fruity and bitter finish.
3.0Bottled. A hazy yellow beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of malt, straw, and hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and straw, leading to a bitter finish. High drinkability.
3.3Bottle from Pacific Liquor: Created a frothy foamed head while the liquid was a hazy faded yellow hue. In the nose, a bold scent of grassy hops and grained malts that smell like hay dominate the aroma. The flavor is simple with a notice of grained barley malt and grassy European hops that make this a strong and standard in the pilsner category.
3.022oz bottle a few years ago. Was pretty mild tasting and refreshing. A bit bland overall from what I remember.
3.122 oz bottle. BB 09/10/13. (Stein’s Deli) New Orleans, LA.
Clear pale golden colour with a small frothy white head.
Yeast, grassy hops and wheaty malt in the aroma.
Yeast, wheat and grassy hops in the flavour. Pilsnery. Not bad but a bit boring. But absolutely for a good cause. Thumbs up!
3.413 sept 2013, bottle. Very pale yellow, clear, occasional bubbles. Nose is straw and sweet malt. Thin body and mildly fizzy. Actually a great pils. Good light lemon hops and some malt sweetness.
3.722 ounce bottle into lager glass, best before 10/30/2013. Pours moderately hazy golden straw color with a 1-2 finger fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon, pear, apple, bread, cracker, wheat, light banana, pepper, clove, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of malt, hop, and yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, pear, apple, wheat, cracker, bread, pepper, light banana, clove, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruits, wheat, banana, cracker, bread, clove, pepper, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Nice balance of malt, hop, and yeast ester flavors; with solid robustness and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice pilsner style. All around well balanced malt, hop, and yeast flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.
3.3Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow color with a white head. Malt, hop, wheat and grass aromas. Malt, wheat, hop, grass and fruit flavors. Medium body and carbonation. Wheat malt finish.
3.8Bottle pours clear light gold with persistent head. Aroma of earth, corn, and malt. Taste on the sweet side on the front with a slight bitter finish. Notes of earth and citrus hops. Mostly light malt. Enjoyable pilsner.
3.6Light color. Smooth taste. Good for the percentage of alcohol. Some koneybgoes to charity so that’s good. Pretty delicious.
3.0Tap at Redfish Grill, New Orleans. Pours clear gold with a medium, creamy white head, long retention with good lacing. Aroma is corn, grain malt, pine and citrus hops with pear notes. Flavor is malty with medium hops and bitterness, a clean lager character and a sweet finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.412/16/2010: Abita Save Our Shore (SOS) - A Charitable Pilsner (unfiltered Weizen Pils made wwith Pilsner and Wheat malts; hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops)... Aroma: Honey and wheat with a splash of grassy, floral, and lightly citrusy hops. Appearance: Cloudy, pale gold color topped with a cratered head of off-white foam; ample carbonation; very nice lacing - delicate and fine bubbles with "legs". Flavor: Mildly sweet honey maltiness followed by a moderate level of spicy and floral bitterness; spicy finish with a good level of lingering bitterness; alcohol is not aggressive. Palate: Medium to medium-full; very smooth; filling. Overall: A little soft, but very drinkable; the pairing of the wheat beer characteristics and spicy hop bitterness is nice; the little bit of sweetness that’s there doesn’t detract from the overall style; quite nice for the price.
1 pint6 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 7% By Vol) from Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, Ohio. Rating #343 for this beer.
3.6Nice looking, golden and clear with lots of rising bubbles and a good head that’s still 1/4" thick ten minutes after pouring.
Aroma and flavor are kinda grainy and a little hop bitter-y, with some grassy notes and a bit of sweet maltiness.
Body is pretty light and a little slick, easy to drink, slight lingering bittersweet notes.
Overall it’s pretty good, quite easy to drink for a 7% beer. I’d have it again, particularly since 75C goes to SOS.
2.1It's a pilsner, so can't be too interesting. Pours an ugly clear yellow with little head. Smells like beer. Taste is boring, doesn't taste like much of anything. Had in the bottle.
2.8Poured from bomber had 1/2 inch head, aroma was mellow with hints of Carmel, heavy on the palate, taste of hops and caramel.
2.8Bomber pours clear gold with white head. Wheat aroma. Basic hop and wheat taste.
3.3An interesting balance of a malty base with a decent strength leading to a crisp, dry, slightly hoppy finish. A step above the average Pils, but could use a tad more hops.
3.1Colore oro, appena velata, con schiuma compatta e abbastanza persistente. Aroma e gusto di malto e frumento, con alcune note erbacee e fruttate. Corpo leggero. Carbonatazione scarna. Lieve astringenza. Stancante.
3.8Poured from a large bottle into a trumpet glass to drink. The beer had a semi-hazy, deep gold-straw color with a good-sized, foamy white had that featured good retention, and great cling and lacing. Its aroma featured pine and citrus hops with some straw tones, and a mix of light barley and malt, with a touch of spice. Its taste was fairly bitter with a citrus-grain blend, and it had a very light sweet malt effect, and a sourish finish. The beer had a lively, fizzy body with high carbonation and a very subtle smooth and silky effect, and was a touch wet and watery.
3.5Thus is one of the best if not the best pilsners I have had. Great males and hop blend.
3.8Bottle in New Orleans with Bobby and Lex. Pours a clear yellow with lots of head. Smell is classic pilsner. Taste is very ordinary for a pilsner but hides the alcohol extremely well. This beer could sneak up on you. Only a little alcohol bite to it but not noticeable after a bit.
3.2I’m not a fan of pilsner, but I like this one. It pours a cloudy golden, with a shiny golden head, and a malty sweet aroma. The hops are light, but have an easy bitterness on the finish.
2.8Bottle. Crackery malt and soapy hops aroma. Slightly hazed golden yellow with a large white head. Slightly sweet grainy malt and grassy soapy hops flavor. Light body, moderate carbonation.
3.3Pours a hazy yellow, white head. The aroma is grassy, malty, slightly sweet. The flavor is grassy, lightly spicy, some banana. The finish is spicy, noble hops. Medium in body. Not bad. Not exciting, but competently made, and enjoyable.
3.1This draft brew from the brew pub poured a medium sized head of foamy finely sized white colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a very softly carbonated transparent yellow orange colored body and a good lacing. The mild aroma was musty. The crisp mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering mild malty aftertaste. The smooth flavor contained notes of mild citrus mild dough mild hops and crisp && clean. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.
3.3Clear yellow pour with white head. Lots of lacing. Aroma of citrus and grains. Tastes of citrus and sweet grass. Don’t really like pilsner most of the time, but this is decent.
3.4Tap at Stagshead this little brew pours yellow with white fluffy head. Nose of citrus and biscuits. Tastes of grass, pepper, earthy, biscuits and some pine. Decent and a cause I care about
3.3Golden yellow with a slight haze, bright white head and nice lace. Wheat and floral hops aromas. Modest floral and citrus hops, minimal bitterness. Pilsner-soft mouthfeel, light to medium body, slightly sticky mouthfeel and a crisp finish.
3.6Bottle. Pours pale golden color with a medium white head and nice lacing. Slight wheat aroma with hints of citrus. Light body with sweet malt flavor and a light bitter finish.
3.4Bomber rom ldhughes3, many thanks. Bottle states a weizen style pilsner.... Huh? Golden hue that is slightly hazy capped by a foamy white head with good retention. Nose of bread and grass and hay. Taste follows in order with a enough bitterness to stay even keeled. The 7% ABV is masked as the body is thin and light.
