3.7 Bottle. Dark brown color. Malty bready, slightly eoasty aroma. Malty sweet, soft roasty raisinny flavor with milk chocolate. Well made, full bodied doppelbock
3.7 Bottled 33cl. It porus a clear deep mahogany beer with an average head. Rich malty with raisins, caramel and hints of icelandic moss throughout. Delicious.
3.8 Best @Latvia Beerfest 2013 Clear deep dark brownish ruby with medium beige head Aroma.. rosasted malts, caramel, coffee, dried fruits, some spices, yeast Sweetish. quite smooth. This one was very enjoyable, well balanced
2.6 (bottle) pours a clear ruby-amber colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of heavy dark fruit, caramel, brown sugar and a hint of raisins. flavour is mostly dark fruit, roasted malts and alcohol, with a hint of bubble gum and grain. heavy-bodied with average carbonation.
3.6 Botella de 330ml. Vaso Stern. 330ml bottle. Stern glass. Enjoyed on apr´12. Pours dark reddish brown in color. Chill haze appearance due dark color. Beige, large size bubbled, froth quickly dissipates. Aromas of caramel malt, sweet toasted malts & slightly yeast fragancy. Gentle moderate sweet to moderate bitter upfront. Ripe dark fruits, subtle chocolate notes. Voluptuos sweet malty palate. Sweetness lingers into the finish with a grape touch. Plum peel on the aftertaste. As usual in a good Doppelbock, ABV is well masked in this balanced malt beer.
Sehr gut! 10/12/12/13/12/13
4.3 Bottle 33cl. Red-brown, clear filtered brew with small off-white head. Roasted malts, fudge, caramel, chocolate in the nose. Malty grainy taste, hoppy dryness, but not harsh at all. Just the right malty sweetness to keep it quaffable. A fine tuned Doppelbock and thus so easy to drink, Great stuff!
4.1 Buronator hits all the right places, pouring a deep chestnut brown with a frothy beige head. Lacks some head retention. Riddled with caramel, the nose also shows molasses, slight mint and some mustiness. Deep and sweet, this beer drinks lighter than its 7.5%. Full bodied but with a lightness to the finish, somewhat active carbonation in the finish does a good job of scraping off the excess malt, allowing a bit of hop character to surface in the otherwise malty finish. A fine dopplebock in the ancient tradition.
3.9 Good abbey doppelbock. It is a classic malty doppelbock with a subtle but noticeable hop balance.
3.7 33 cl bottle from a specialized retailer in Barcelona. It pours an unclear dark amber-brownish liquid with small beige head that dissipates quickly; no lacing. The aroma is strongly malty, with licorice, coffee, caramel, brandy and also a hint of banana from the yeast. It tastes likewise, with medium sweetness and medium bitterness. Full bodied, it has the watery feeling of bocks but does not spoil the brew. Subtle and smart carbonation, nice aftertaste. Good one to try; it is not every day that you come across a doppelbock. Very nice bottle and standard Aktien crown cap.
3.9 Deep, clear ruby black color/ tan head. Nice chocolate, nutty, toasted wheat bread, lagered aromas. smooth mouthfeel. Good multi grain dark bread, molasses, nutty flavors with some dark fruit. Great double bock
4.0 A: The pour is a slightly muddy mahogany color with very minimal head formation and carbonation. S: What a nose on this beer! Plenty of yeasty esters providing banana and clove notes. There’s also a nice fruitiness to it as well as a nice caramel, toffee, and chocolate sweetness. T: The beer is pleasantly sweet with flavors of caramel, toffee, chocolate, and some cola. As the beer warms up, the yeast flavors really come out, especially the bananas. M: A medium to full bodied beer with somewhat minimal carbonation. D: A really fantastic doppelbock. Quite complex and deep both in flavors and aromas--great all around.
2.9 Bottle: Dark and hazy, light head and nice lacing. Nose of toasty malt, roast and sweet with plums. The flavor is sweet, more chewy and roasty with grape and plum. Too thick and sweet, meh. Thicker and sweeter than the St. Martin though.
3.5 Bottle on the cheapo shelf at Sam’s in Durham. Pours medium brown with reddish tint and light showing through. Sorta foamy light (in both senses) beige head. Nose shows dark fruits (lots of prune and raisin), caramel, and some creaminess. Tastes similar. Solid.
3.5 Bottle, pours a clear red-brown body with a thick, light brown head. Aroma of caramel malts, bread, and yeast. Flavor is similar with a light chocolate tone. Medium bodied with a smooth, slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Solid beer.
3.7 Dark brown beer and a dark colored head, with brown foam. Standard bock aroma and flavors, lager yeast, caramel. Medium sweet, but also an earthy character.
3.2 Dark brown in color. Off-white head. Beer is sweet with a smooth finish. Tastes mildly of coffee.
3.8 Bottle; poured a dark cola brown with a medium khaki/off white head. Aroma of dark fruit, caramel, earth, grapes, mineralsand sweet malt. Flavor was of dark fruit, minerals, caramel, earth and roasted malt. After taste was not great at times. But that seemed to lessen over time. Alcohol well hidden. Full and rich. Very nice.
3.9 500 mL bottle pours a deep tobacco brown with some retaining khaki head into a stem glass. Great aroma of sweet chocolate, plumb, raisin, malt, vanilla, butterscotch. Huge butterscotch flavor that blends into milk chocolate, raisins, dates. Finishes with a solid malty presence and slight licorice notes. Medium body with a velvety mouthfeel and a low-medium level of carbonation. Very nice.
4.1 The bottle looks good as well as the beer in the glass. Huge head for a doppelbock. Wonderful soft-malty aroma. Starts strong, modest sweet, not dry. Fine malty notes, caramell, coffee and chocolate. Very well balanced. Very drinkable and good doppelbock!
3.7 Bottle. Pours a brune body with an off white head. Chocolate and caramel roasted malts, nutty, chewy a bit of dusty malt tones. Sweet with a mild warming. A nice bock.
3.7 Pours a shade darker than Mahogany ..head settles to cream colored speckles on top . Nose as vibrant notes of nuts, toffee, chocolate, pumpkin spice, and bread with an underlying smokiness. Flavors are malty with notes of chocolate toffee and nuts and have a nice meaty, smoke character to them as well. The body seems a little less than it needs to be to carry the flavors..but the finish is quite nice as the chocolaty toffee and meaty smoke flavors seem to get more refined and linger. Just seems a little flat in the middle at times. Tasty regardless.
3.6 Bottle 33cl. @ home. Clear medium to dark red brown color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is light heavy malty, roasted, caramel, chocolate, dusty nutty, brown sugar. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20091102]
3.5 50cl bottle - fizzy ruby pour that fails to kick up a head - lightly oxidized aroma - nose of raisin, cherry, date, rum, dark breads - very smooth - low to medium carbonation - quite a bit of toffee, raisin, burnt sugars - this is tempered by a light tartness and some late bitterness - finishes with some warming and peppery alcohol - an enjoyable doppelbock.
4.0 Bottle (labeled St. Martin Dunkler Dopplebock) and served in snifter, next to Allgäuer Cambonator Doppelbock, Weltenburger Kloster Asam Bock and Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock (the baseline bier): App: All three had a mahogany hue with the Buroator and Asam bocks displaying a bit more reddish highlights as well as a darker more tannish creamy head and better lacing. Cambonator gets the lowest score of 3, the others 4 each. Aroma: Buronator, heavy caramel malt, bready and alcohol, some prune and fig along with a touch of peaty like smoke, brilliant. The Cambonator displays a walnut tone long with caramel, brown sugar and grape juice, interesting. The Asam bock has the weakest nose of the three with notes of caramel, wood, tobacco, grains, and a hint of raisin. Taste: Rich and sweet caramel malt is front and center as expected in all three biers as is a hint of molasses. The differences are found with the undertones: Buronator has a figgy and roasty tone along with a dash of mineral water. It seems despite the heavy malt to be the most balanced of the three. The Cambonator has a very slight acidity (again grape juice) and some ashy notes. The Asam has more of a bakers chocolate tone and is more earthy and tobacco like, the most complex of the three. Mouthfeel: Buronator, creamy and lively, Cambonator, lively and oily, a bit thinner, Asam lush and heavy, dry mineral finish. Overall: While all three are well done and similar in the basics, the difference of enjoyment and complexity gives Buronator a slight advantage over Asam Bock with the Allgauer Cambonator my least favorite. This is interesting since the Buronator has the lowest ratebeer score of the three. Now when compared to the standard bearer of the style, and Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock ( 4.2), I found both the Buronator and Asam close companions but still a second cousin, The Cambonator was not even in the same zip code. Ahhh, the wonders of the horizontal tasting.
3.6 Bottle 50 cl. Pours a clear warm orangey brown with a light brown head. Sweet aroma of roasted malt and pumpernickel. Quite full-bodied with sweet accents of roasted malt, pumpernickel and dried fruit. Subdued bitterness. Excellent Doppelbock. 100709
3.7 Smooth...dark brown with little head. Aroma and taste are well balanced between sweet and bitter.
3.6 50 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden deep hazzlenut brown with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted breadish, light caramel note. Smooth dark breadish and caramel/toffee flavoured. Rather crisp and vibrant hops balance. Smooth roasted breadish finish.
