Adnams Broadside (Bottle)

Adnams Broadside (Bottle)

Bottle: Filtered

Broadside was launched as a 6.3% bottled beer in 1972 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the battle of Sole Bay fought against the Dutch Republic in 1672 off the Southwold coast, just across the green from the brewery.

Ingredients: Pale, Black, and Chocolate malts; First Gold hops

Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit. The fullness of the beer makes it a good accompaniment for hearty food.

3.6 Old rating from 2014 - 500ml bottle, pours dark brown with a off white head. Aromas & tastes of earth, resin, bread, dark fruits, raisins, alcohol & malt. Medium body. Long mildly bitter finish
4.2 500ml bottle brewed in England at 6.3%. Metallic ruby with a small, decent-duration head. Earthy aroma, with some black cherry and raisin beneath. Very faintly nutty, possibly even vestiges of smoke. Moderate carbonation, somewhat foamy mouthfeel. Shades of a Dubbel (shades, mind you). Nutty aftertaste, with a wee bit of smoky praline and raisin. Light cherry and creamy milk chocolate notes. Very, very impressive. If you know a Hobgoblin drinker, try them on this - might be less oomph here, but it's considerably more upmarket. Complex and refined, at great price and availability. Adnams are quite the dark horse.
3.9 500ml bottle served in a barrel pint glass. Room temperature. Dark russet ale with beige tight head, leaves nice lace on the glass.A sweet almost banana like aroma. A slightly smoked roast flavour, with a hint of Christmas cake. A bitter, after taste with a hint of alcohol. A very good winter warmer.
4.5 Pours very dark almost Porter like. Nice head that disappears quickly. Aroma is deep dried fruit cake and very pleasant. Taste is deliciously rich roast barley and liquorice mixed with raisins. No bitterness and very pleasing to drink. This beer is not a session beer as the alcohol level is high- a couple these while sat in front of a log fire on a winters night- perfect.
4.3 Smooth, tasty, nice!
3.8 Pours chestnut brown with a very thin off white head. Very malty and quite rich with notes of chocolate and cocoa. The aftertaste is quite hoppy and sweet at the same time. The mouthfeel is a little oily and quite cloying. The beer is enjoyable to drink and it is difficult to detect the level of abv which is relatively high given the drinkability. Would recommend.
3.4 Muddyish dark brown with a frothy off-white head, and a rich, sweetish malty aroma. The rich malt continues into the taste, carried by a nice smooth mouthfeel, with dark fruit and some mild spice apparent, the bitterness appears and continues into an astringent finish
4.0 Creamy off white head stayed on a chestnut coloured still body. Malt & chocolate & cake aroma. Medium bodied, creamy with lighter cloying back. Malt, demerara, some marzipan, cake, liquorice & raisin tastes with fruity finish. Excellent - Can't believe I've never had it before.
2.8 Very strong malty dark ale, pretty decent
3.7 Bottle from Tesco.com. Brown pour with a beige head. Dark fruits, plum pudding, raisin, toffee aromas. Taste is fruitcake, sweet malts, raisin, dark fruits, more toffee. Sweet malty finish. Tasty.
3.9 Bottle BBE in 9 months. A dark ruby colour with decent frothy beige head. Aroma of roasted malts and dried fruit. Moderate body with low carbonation and quite smooth on the palate. Flavour of malts, biscuit, nuts, coffee. A little sweet but not overdone. Finish is bitter and slightly dry. This is flavoursome without being packed with complex notes. However, its extremely well balanced, has depth and is moorish. Impressed.
4.1 Nice. Drunk this a long time ago but tried again more recently. Pretty good. Still good.
1.1 Bitter without being rich. I thought the beer was lacking, like it was watery. Higher alcohol content so gives a good buzz.
3.0 500ml glass bottle from Waitrose Finchley Road. £1.80. Dated as best before 04/2021. Served at cool room temperature into a pint glass. The beer pours a very very very dark ruby colour, tipping into mahogany. Light bleeds through suggesting it has been filtered. A small one finger head, quick to dissipate to puddles. The beer has an aroma similar to other in this style and a Dubbel. Dark dried fruit, currants, raisin, light baking spice. Heavy in the malt but also a noticeable hop English presence. The taste is a little disappointing. Malt, Soreen, currants and raisins. No sign of the spice. Quite an aggressive low hop presence. Not at all dominant but pushing to let you know its their. Something about the bitterness is off putting. It doesn’t seem to work in harmony with the other tastes. Flat on the tongue. A bittersweet after taste with short legs. A fairly average beer. Much better dark ales are readily available. I’d been hoping for better as I’d been told this was ‘better than Tynt Meadow’. I should have known better. Stick with the monks or Fullers 1845. Both much better than this.
3.5 500ml bottle from Tesco, Leatherhead. Pours with a thin beige head. Aroma of malt and dried fruit. Similar taste. Bitter finish.
4.3 Bottled version of exceptional quality strong ale Cask version reduced to avoid tax was my favourite ale of all time but since the nineties it’s the bottled version that is preferable
3.3 Wow, well it’s good. I just wouldn’t have it everyday. It’s like Kramer, very entertaining but hang with him too long and you’re gonna get a headache
3.6 50cl bottle thanks to @minutemat and EuroSwap 3/2019. Deep red ruby color with beige head. Aroma is bready with ripe fruits. Taste is sweet but balanced with nice bitterness and caramel aftertaste. Very enjoyable.
3.9 Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Rich, malty aroma. Pours a very dark brown, almost black colour with a thick off-white head that lasts well. Rich, chocolate, coffee and roasted malt flavours. Full bodied and rounded. Leaves a good hoppy aftertaste. Lovely beer, but this is a supping, not a session beer.
3.3 Pours a deep rich amber brown. Foamy head that laces nicely. Aroma of malt and plummy fruit. Taste is much the same, toasty with boozy slightly sweet fruit that lingers on the mouth. Not one to guzzle, but a good slow winter drink.
3.1 Nose : Rich toffee malt with an undertone rich spicy friut cake. Taste : Rich. malty, spicy candied fruit cake...a tad too sweet, but none the less still a decent beer and great at Christmas
3.3 500ml bottle from Tesco Watford, drunk on 09/01/2006. Always did used to like this. Very full and malty, but not overly sweet and with a good rounded flavour and depth. Wouldn’t object to drinking it now.
3.6 Lovely classic ale. Can pick this up almost anywhere for pretty cheap and it's a real gem. 6.3% and your getting a malt bomb. Lovely roasted flavours perfect for the summer - Autumn change up. Nothing too complex, just a lovely drop of ale that tips the cap to the beers of yesteryear.
3.6 zapach przyjemny, dość intensywny, karmel, melasa, słodkie spieczone pieczywo, odrobina toffi, troszeczkę drewna i odrobina wsi, przyjemny, ciepły. kolor brązowy, wpadający w ciemny rubin, klarowny, piana jasno beżowa, dość obfita i dość trwała. w smaku pełne, konkretne, dużo ciemnego karmelu, melasy, lekkie korzenie, trochę suszonych owoców, drewno, twarde i stare, ale i sporo młodego i soczystego, trochę liści, trochę przypraw, odrobina alkoholu, ale w przyjemnym wydaniu. goryczka dość wysoka, odrobinę podpiekana, młode soki z roślin, trochę alkoholu. w ustach dość pełne. nasycenie umiarkowane do niskiego
5.0 WOW !! 5 Star.. this is an amazing beer, full of character and strength. This is how strong beer should be.
4.0 Dark Stout colour thin white head tastes great 6.3% alc
3.0 Dark toffee brown with a thin beige head. Aroma, hint of malt, bananas. Strong malt taste, biscuity sweet, but not a lingering flavour. Low carbonation, a little cloying? Commemorates the battle of Solebay in 1672 - an inconclusive sea battle of the third Anglo-Dutch war that took place off the coast of Southwold, where the Adnams brewery is located.
3.7 Fles 50cl thuis. Noot, koffie drab, zoetig, donker fruit, roasted malts, kruidig, basilicum, bitters, laurier, zoethout, wat droog. (12-7-2019).
2.8 Light smooth beer, easy to drink, tastes nice
