Adnams Southwold Bitter (Bottle/Can)

Adnams Southwold Bitter (Bottle/Can)

A refreshing beer of real flavour - distinctively hoppy and dry with malt aromas. Delicious served cool.

Adnams brewery has stood in the heart of Southwold for over six hundred years and "Southwold Jack" appears on our beer labels. He continues to guard over our longest-serving beer brewed here in Southwold on the Suffolk coast -The Bitter. Bitter goes well with roast meats and fish cooked in batter as the clean bitterness cuts through the slightly fatty notes and hence keeps the palate refreshed. Our Bitter also makes a good aperitif.

Available (pasteurised) in 500ml bottles and 500ml cans.

3.8 50cl can. Great smooth caramelly dry beginning. Moderate bitter, dry hazelnuts, mild and smooth. Great malty toasted dry finish. Great Bitter! Thank to Simon for this great beer.
3.3 Pours a deep amber/brown, with a foamy off-white head, and the aroma of malt loaf/brown bread. Tastes initially of malt with a hit of dry, bitterness from the hops, and a hint of fruit. A very satisfying mouthfeel and a good example of an old school British bitter, leaves a dry, bitter and pleasant aftertaste.
3.1 Aroma : Deeply toasted sweet caramel/biscuity malt, hint of soft red fruits with a grassy /hay hop note. Taste : As Aroma. Medium bodied. Medium bitter throughout with a dryish finish. A staple down the bowls club for a couple of post match beers. Much better than your average 'best' which can often be insipid!
4.2 A great bitter. Smooth and easy to drink, with a ruby appearance and a lingering head. Smells like hops as it should, and there is a pleasant malty/hoppy aftertaste. Taste-wise, it is by far and away the best beer the Adnams brewery makes. Warming caramel undertones mix surprisingly well with the hoppy aroma; a very satisfying drink.
2.8 Can from Systembolage. What the hell was I rating up until now. A tinny-ish bitter that hits the spot if youre not paying too much attention. CAramel look. Some hop coming off in the aftertaste.
2.9 Poured from the can at a beach house in West Sussex, previously had it from the bottle at home. Decent bitter
4.3 Thanks dantomlinson for sharing! Clear ruby body with a big foamy persistent white head. Aroma is biscuits, almonds, faint hoppy notes. Taste is malty, pleasant notes of red berries, caramel and biscuits. Nice hoppy and mineral notes to complete the flavour. Mineral and fruity finish. Medium body, soft carbonation, thin texture.
3.5 Bottle. Poured Amber with minimal head. A: malty T: medium/full body, medium saturation, higher drinkability, medium bitterness, nice balance between malt and hops.
3.4 23-12-2018; bottle; at home (bought somewhere in England). The beer looks quite nice. It is a bit darker than I'd expect. The color of the beer is a nice dark golden amber. It almost approaches copper. The beer is absolutely crystal clear. On top of the beer there is a nice frothy soft layer of foam. Foam retention is quite good. The foam layer stays on top of the beer for a decent amount of time. Not bad. The aromas of the beer are quite nice. The malts are nice and sweet. They come with some biscuity notes. Not to strong and special, but they form quite a nice base. On top of this there are the nice hops. They are quite crisp and decent. Hop aromas consist of some rather spicy notes, but also quite some fruity aromas. A bit zesty, but also some stone fruit and also a hint of lemon. Nice. The taste of the beer is nice. The malts are sweet, but not overwhelmingly sweet. The hops bring in a firm bitterness. The fruitiness of the hops brings just the right amount of fruitiness, bot bring the beer to a final balance. Very nice. The palate of the beer is nice. Medium body, quite smooth, considering the bitterness and dry aspect, and medium carbonation. The finish of the beer is nice. It has some nice fruity hops, and in the end that nice bitterness of a Bitter. A bit dry, but not over the top dry. Very nice one.
3.0 Unfortunately, this beer was consumed after a really hoppy offering; so intially was somewhat jarring. However, the malts instantly jumped out on the aroma, giving superbly toasted caramel and red fruit notes. Really decent darker bitter! Great sessionability but also a good bit of complexity considering the price and abv range!
3.3 500ml bottle served in a English pint glass. Pours a clear copper amber color forming a creamy light yellow head with good retention that forms and leaves lots of thin lingering lacings in the glass. Nose is sweet and malty. Strong notes of caramel malts and grassy hops. Notes of resin and hop flower. Slightly sweet upfront taste. Strong notes of caramel malts and grassy hops. Medium bitterness. Slightly metallic. Hints of pine and ash. Light body. Medium to low carbonation. Caramel and resin in the afteraste. Good drinkability. Classic British bitter ale.
3.1 Can sample at a tasting at Oren's place. Clear bronze with beige head. The aroma has notes of bread, earthy, some smokiness. The flavor is mild bitter and mild sweet with notes of bread, some dried fruits, caramel and lemon. Slightly dry, light to medium-bodied.

3.2 11/8/2018. Bottle from the Adnams shop, Woodbridge. Pours tawny brown with a lasting off-white to beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, hops, fruit and a little fruit cake. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness. Moderate body, slight oily texture, soft carbonation. Staple sessionable bitter.

3.9 Godt bitter og let humlet. En god tørst slukker. En typisk engelsk øl, der passer godt til en sommerdag.
3.4 Good malty body with a floral spiced not from the hops. Low carbonation with little to no head. Decent representation of a bitter.
2.6 Sweet fruits, esters, a bit of vinegar. Dark amber and clear. Estety, fruity, sweet, but empty.
3.4 Ambar oscura, caoba. Limpia. Espuma manchada. Aroma tostado, frutos secos. En boca buen punto de gas, paso facil, ligera. Balanceada, sabrosa, entre seca y dulce, con amargor moderado. Malta tostada, madera, caramelo.
2.5 500ml bottle (Sip, Tallinn) Malty aroma, a touch metallic, sweet. Ruddy, tight head. Sweet metallic malty taste, some foresty undergrowthy bitterness. Finish is metallic and bitter and harsh. Nutty finish. Woody, bitter. Rough. Narp.
2.6 Bottle, from Morrisons. Chestnut red, thin short lived off white head and low condition.
