Against the Grain 35K Stout

Against the Grain 35K Stout

Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this ale’s rich and complex maltiness.

3.7 1 US pint can, from Bestofbeers, Denmark. ABV is 7.0%. Black colour, huge tan head. Aroma of roast malts and lactose, also notes of chocolate. Fizzy mouthfeel. Medium sweet flavour of roast malts, lactose, coffee and dark chocolate.
3.5 Tap@ Hugos pubquiz. Appearance: pours clear dark brown with ok soapy tan head and lacing. aroma/taste: barley, bread, caramel, liquorice, coffee, chocolate, light milk chocolate and light floral notes. palette: strong medium roast aroma, average carbonation, medium to full body, medium to notable sweetness, somewhat balanced by a medium bitterness, average duration and an oily texture. Overall: tasteful and well balanced medium roast stout
4.3 Ristede malte og en fin fylde, lidt blomme anes også i slutningen. God nydeøl.
3.9 16 oz can shared with the wife. Pours black with some ruby edges and a quick head. Chocolate malt aroma with a hint of molasses and vanilla. Sweet flavor that mirrors the aroma. Full bodied. Very nice.
3.9 For my taste this is a stout I can love, smooth, a little smoke but not overdone with coffee.
4.0 Can. Roasted aroma. Faintly vinous. Black colour. Small light brown head. The flavour is roasted and slightly sweet. Some lactose, I guess. Hint of paper in the finish, but not bad.
3.6 16oz can at home. Medium dark with reddish edges and a lasting frothy tan head with some lacing. Coffee, roast malt, sweet milk chocolate, caramel. Soft carb, medium-full body - body and alcohol feel about right for 7%, Overall not particularly sweet, nicely balanced and roasty. Very enjoyable.
3.0 Piwo w kolorze coca coli, praktycznie bez piany. Ogólnie piłem wiele lepszych stoutów made in poland.
3.9 Deep brown, opaque. Small ivory-coloured head. Nose: fairly roasty, tobacco, some smoke, a hint of hops. Medium body. Soft carbonation. Taste: medium dry. Roast, chocolate, tobacco, hop. Light bitterness. Good.
3.8 Can from Brewces, Leek. Pours a deep brown colour with a medium tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate, some coffee, slight dark fruits, a hint of smoke and subtle liquorice. Taste of rich milk chocolate, some coffee, slight dark fruits, a little caramel and subtle liquorice. Medium bodied and a smooth texture. A sweetish, chocolate and liquorice finish. Pours thick like Guinness but this is super chocolatey and really smooth. Became more fruity and liquoricey the more I drank. Classic milk stout.
3.7 Pint can. Pours a thick, slowly collapsing, tan head, with slight lacing, over a clear dark brown (SRM 35) body.......nose is heavy roasted malts, with cocoa, chocolate, coffee and slight caramel, slight hop herbal spice tones, balance to the malts.....taste is mildly lactose sweet with heavy roasted malts with cocoa, chocolate, coffee tones, slight nuttiness and mild tobacco, mild herbal hop tones, finishing with mild hop bitterness, balance to the malts....mouth feel, medium body, slight alcohol, moderate carbonation. This is a thoroughly drinkable Milk Stout with adequate sweetness and lovely roasted malts with moderate hop contributions.
3.2 Can. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Roasted malt, milk chocolate, perhaps some licorice notes, bit of stone fruit, lactose. Very sweet.
3.6 13-Jan-19 (16-oz can, Canned 01-Sep-18: Purchased 13-Jan-19 for $4.49 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) This Stout pours a black body topped by an inch of tan head that eventually settles to a thin sheet and ring. The nose shows light roast, some sweetness, licorice, light iodine and smoke, floral hops, sweet chocolate, and wort. On the palate, this isn't a heavily roasty Stout with burnt flavors, but more just medium roast, medium sweet, and floral in nature. Licorice, caramel, cacao, dark bread, iodine, chocolate milk, and English-style floral hops. The beer is medium-plus in weight, medium in carbonation, and has a dusty but not dry mouthfeel in the finish. Overall, this is a Stout that's unusual in many respects when compared to current trends. Sweeter, floral, less roasty, not "desserty", it comes across like an English Sweet Stout with a hint of Euro Dark Lager.
3.7 Tap at The Dead Crafty Beer Co. Milk chocolate, cocoa and roasted malt aroma. Pitch black color with medium sized brown head. Sweet milk chocolate taste, ashy, cocoa. Medium body, average carbonation.
3.4 Black body with tan foam. Dark chocolate, licorice, milk sugar aromas. Medium bodied with soft co2. Sweet dark chocolate, black malt, dark fruit flavors with a smooth finish ___good

4.1 Can. Black pour with an off-white head. Chocolate, vanilla and coffee notes. Bittersweet. Rich. Very tasty.

3.8 Pint can. Roasted malt aroma with notes of chocolate, lactose sugar and a little bit of licorice. Pours black with a large mocha brown head that has excellent retention and decent lacing. Starts with chocolate malt and some licorice flavors. Finishes smooth and a touch dry with roasted malt flavors and sweet lactose sugar smoothing it out on the palate. Pretty nice sweet stout.
3.8 Motor oil with a finger of mocha head. Nose is sweet coffee and chocolate. Middle is coffee chocolate shake, lactose smooths it all out, body is surpring light, touch of young wood. Finish is bittersweet. Yum.
3.8 Cuerpo fantastico para esta milk stout que a pesar de no encantarme el estilo hace que se convierta en una de mis favoritas y mas para maridar con la comida picante del kitchen
3.6 Black beer, thin head. Malty, dark chocolate smell. Taste is toasty malt, creamy chocolate and a good whack of coffee. Lovely smooth stuff.
4.2 Pours black with a dark tan head. Nose shows heavy roast, toasty and bready malt, cereal notes, cocoa and faint liquorice. Flavours include toasty and bready notes, soft dry roast, not too much bitterness, a touch of sweetness.
4.3 Color negro. Espuma beige oscuro. Aroma a café y licor. Sabor a café, chocolate y caramelo. Alcohol muy presente, más aún al atemperar.
3.7 473mL can from Carwyn Cellars 7.0%abv bb 13.01.19 Looks the part - thick opaque black body, firm tan foam holding atop. Rich malty aroma - dark chocolate, fair bit of biscuit/dark caramel, charred toast, milk coffee. Lovely creamy texture, not overly thick for strength but smooth very easy - sure this is 7%? Touch more sweetness on the palate - milk chocolate, cappuccino, caramel & burnt toast. Low bitterness, smooth finish. Lovely stuff!
3.9 Tap@konttori. Opaque black color with tanned head. Aroma has caramel, malt, licorice, coffee and milk chocolate. Taste is malty with long quite sweet aftertaste. Flavors of coffee, milk chocolate, dark malt and caramel.
3.9 Tap @ Pub Kultainen Apina. Pours dark red-brown color with a small head. Pleasant toasted malty aroma, some chocolate notes, slightly lactic, faint spice notes, some cocoa. Flavor starts with toasted malts and milky chocolate, some spice notes and molasses follow, finishes with smooth dark bread and cocoa notes. Nice balance here, deceptively quaffable, lots of flavors too, not too sweet. Great. 4326
3.5 Tap at Kultainen Apina. Pours Black, thin khaki head. Dark malts, chocolate, cacao, light roastiness, dried fruits. Medium to full body, almost flat carbonation, sweet slightly roasted finish.
