Alaskan Hopothermia Double IPA

Alaskan Hopothermia Double IPA

Much of the history of Hopothermia is lost to the mists of time. We know that the windswept lone brewer dreamt of a Double IPA so bold and packed full of hop flavor that it could keep the wild wolves from the door of his remote cabin. We know he was able to converse with the creatures of the woods—except for the bears who slept through the cold winter, and the mink, who were just really super rude. And we know he skillfully crafted a beer that became the stuff of legend.

There are strange brews made where glaciers cascade

By the brewers who know no bounds.

For they stuff in the hops ’til the temperature drops

And then call for a few more rounds.

In Alaska, it seems, every brewer dreams

of a bold Double IPA.

Hopothermia’s the beer, in the Last Frontier

That will keep the wild wolves at bay.

3.8 Aroma is pine, fruit and big sweetness. The flavor is fruit/berries, piney hops, malts and a sweet/spicy/alcoholic finish.
3.2 Clear copper pour with a two finger, off white head. Aroma of bitter pine, dankness, orange slice candy, caramel and bread, a hint of biscuits and planty hops. Flavor is caramel, wood, bread, toffee, lots of booze, light dankness, licorice, dried leaves, light berry notes and sweet and bitter citrus. Medium body, medium, sharp carbonation, oddly strong boozy heat for 8.5% and off dry finish. This is a weird one, it’s a tiny bit of a mess.
4.0 Very fresh sample. Nice aroma of sweet bread, caramel, and some booze. Pine in there as well. Beautiful orange amber with a huge tan head. Sweet caramel up front. Quickly laced with deep pine resin with medium bitterness. Nice balance on this beer. Medium mouth feel with a pine laced bitter finish and a touch of warming from Alcohol. Nice an boozy in a good way. Solid.
3.2 (Tap) clear, very bright orange brown colour with a small tan head; aroma of dankness, pepper, hint of jam; balanced flavour with a long, light bitter finish
3.6 Clear amber/copper. Nice lace and light creamy head. Nice aroma, not strong but significant. Not neccessarly hoppy either. Its minty with fresh maltyness and crisp air. TAste is kinda good mixed with mediocre. Pronounced bitter. Drinks well for a double, yet its drinkable/sipable and cleanish. something about this gives it marks down for a double. Good to average. I love Alaska, I worked in the Dutch Harbor cannary around 1999. Beautiful.
3.8 Bottle BEST BY 072717. Sweet nose fills the room with citrus, hops, bright candy, touch resin, drop of medicine, something like vanilla/cake frosting. Pour very slightly hazy orange-amber but bright and fully-carbonated, large and rocky beige head. Taste medium-bitter but loaded with floral hop juice, strong alcohol that warms and eventually singes, sugar, citrus, candy. Bit of resin, bit of earth, clean bitterness a bit breadier but low-key lasts in the aftertaste. Dense and full, creamy-smooth throughout, fat body but not heavy, with wonderful accents coming up over time -- peach and especially mango to take me by surprise by the end. Strong but slightly indistinct malt with decent depth. A different kind of IPA, leans rather toward the Old Ale feel of class and permanence (though with an obviously different flavor profile). [2017.06.07: 3.8]
3.4 Pours a darker amber color with an off-white head. Aroma is floral hops with caramel malts and a hint of alcohol. Flavor is all floral hops up front. Finishes with a sweetness from the malts and a slight warming.
3.8 Bottle. Amber with a small head.Unusual slightly sharp hoppy flavour. Not your run of the mill imperial I[PA. Worth trying.
3.3 12 ounce bottle. Not sure why this text is italicized? Clear dark amber, large foamy white head, good retention. Aroma of pine, candied citrus, lemon, pale malt. The taste is grapefruit, lemon, pine, pale malt. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness.
3.2 Pours a deep golden orange from bottle. Smells strongly of musty, old forest pine. Unfortunately, tastes like it too. Not the best double IPA. Come on Alaska...
4.0 Tried during a beer tasting on an Alaskan cruise. Poured rich tangerine color with thick head. Aroma/taste: citrusy and floral scent, with a piny and grapefruit zesty flavor followed by a satisfying mouth numbing bitterness.
3.1 Shared 12 oz. bottle. Clear pale amber, off-white head. Aroma of caramel, citrus, floral notes. Taste is caramel, citrus, pine, floral notes, alcohol, with the emphasis less on the hops and more on the sweet malt and alcohol.
2.9 Aroma: tons of hoppy citrus, fragrant from 2 feet away; Appearance: clear amber pour with fluffy offwhite head that lingers; Taste: not as good as aroma; hoppy and malty with unpleasant finish; Palate: medium body with long malty finish; Overall: disappointing. Would not get again.
4.6 Pours deep golden orange. Great hop and floral character. Great mix of bitter hops and malt backbone. One of my new favorite beers.
3.9 Amber color out of the bottle with a short foamy khaki colored head. Big sweet hop fruity nose. This has lots of the pinching citrus zest hop characteristics with apricot and tropical fruit sweetness, all over a firm malty backbone. The ABV is well hidden in this easy drinking IIPA.
4.1 bottle. Poured clear copper with a thin white head. Caramel malt aroma with an orange astringent note. Medium-full body, creamy carbonation, warning alcohol finish. A moderately malt forward bready base, balanced bitter-sweet flavour, apricot, citrus peel and pine resin with floral hops and a peppery note.
3.5 Dark orangeish copper color with a tallish, creamy looking, light beige head. Orange and pine scents. A hopshead lovers aroma. Flavors of pale malt, caramel, oranges, grapefruit and zest. Sweetness seems to track throughout. Tangerines in the finish. Whole lot of citrus going on. Light acidic dryness in the end. 1/14
3.1 12 ounce bottle poured into a tulip glass. The beer is a clear copper color with a big head of white foam. The aroma is resinous and pine forward. Sticky pine notes are abundant in the taste and aroma. Fairly bitter on the back end, but the front end is majorly sweet. Big body and medium carbonation. Dry and bitter finish. Not my thing, I guess.
3.5 22 oz bottle from Capital Market in Salem OR $5.99 Pours a darker than usual orange/amber colour with an absolutely beautiful large thick and frothy head ( cream coloured). Aroma is of course strong on the hops..floral, spicy orange zest. but huge toffee malts in the back. Taste s similar to the nose..but very sweet. Mouth feel is average..its thick and viscous..carbonation is way low..and thus the sweetness becomes sticky on the palate. Started off so good but went down hill fast..needs a more vigorous carbonation
3.6 12 oz bottle pours burnt orange with small white head some lacing very hoppy flavor and aroma very nice
3.7 Bottle, pours copperish with a beige head; nice citrus aroma with pine, caramel, and some biscuit hints; taste is more bitter than sweet with pine, citrus fruits, and caramel; finish is dry and light bitter pine
2.9 Pours Amber with a sticky thick lace. Aroma is mild pine and some alcohol. Flavor is weak, not hoppy, more barley wine. Run of the mill.
3.6 A delicious IIPA. Aroma was big and hoppy. Grapefruit rind, lemon and notes of fresh cut grass. Pour was a medium dark gold with a one finger white head. Taste almost all hops. Fresh green hops with bitter grapefruit rind and lemon in the front. A lightly malty bitter sweet finish balances the beer out (barely). This beer is really all hops and very good. Nice. carbonation.
3.6 Bottle at home. Pours clear copper color with a medium sized off white head that lasts. The aroma and flavor have resin and citrus hops that favor grapefruit, toasted malts, mild caramel, moderate bitterness, good beer, but nothing stands out from any other DIPA.
3.4 Pours dark amber light retention. Aromas caramel, pineapple, citrus, spicy hop, pine. Flavors pine, citrus, caramel and pineapple. Taste alot like the dipa’s I’ve created. It has that intermingled complexity where nothing really stands out. The flavors are hard to separate in the complexity. Medium to high sweetness. Quickly forgettable.
3.3 Bottle from brown jug. A little maltier than I prefer. Some perfuminess. As it chilled it got better with more bitterness.
4.2 12 ounce bottle to wine glass Appearance: Dark amber, clear, lacing Aroma: hoppy, grains Taste: heavy bitterness, medium sweetness M/F: long bitter finish OA: very good IPA, ok to repeat and look for Drank: 9/15/2016 8:30 PM
3.5 12oz bottle to tulip. Pours clear amber red, small ring head. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, dank, tropical fruit, caramel malts. Taste of same with fig and bread finish. Mouthfeel is mod syrupy, good carb.
3.9 Amber pour, finger frothy cream colored head. Aroma of pine, floral, malts. Tastes herbal, even bitter, good even toasty malt backbone, tropical ripe fruits, pine. Creamy medium palate - very nice. Clean lightly bitter finish. Good stuff.
3.8 Burnt orange color. Sweet tropical fruit aromas. Pine and tropical fruit taste. Sticky mouthfeel. Bitter on the end
