Alaskan IPA

Alaskan IPA

In early 2014 Alaskan re-formulated their IPA as Icy Bay IPA

The very intense, complex aromatic character with a refreshing, crisp finish is achieved by dry hopping. The fruity, citrusy aroma is a nice complement with grilled prawns and spicy foods.

3.1 Reviewed from notes. She pours a mostly clear light golden yellow color and leaves the same color body with a two finger white foamy head that rises and falls at a moderate pace leaving some foamy clingy lacing in the wake. The aroma has some strong citrus yet also pine up front, mellow malts back all of that up as it warms. The taste has some bitter backings from a hoppy sort of combined maltiness and becomes somewhat sweet as it warms, pine aftertaste, quick dry finish. On the palate, she sits pretty light, pretty sessionable and becomes perhaps a bit more watery than most AIPA’s I’ve had as there seems to be a lack of carbonation for the style. Overall, for the most part, its a decent AIPA, nothing to scream about, if anything it has goin’ for it is the fact that its pretty sessionable.
3.2 12oz into a glass in Vegas. Pours a heavy bronzed sunshine. Aroma is piney, citrus, ripe grapefruit, grapes, grass and a small amount of nectar. Taste is very bitter, no real hop smack to get down with, more of a clean ale feeling that a heady ipa from Alaska. Frontal crispness of the hops does rise above in this brew, very clean cut and mellow for an ipa. Drinkability is soft, easy going and fresh to the palate, but i wish there was more of a hop presence in this one, hardly the bite i look for in an ipa. But definately not a bad choice.
3.7 Pint from draft at Lucky Strike Belmar. Well, this is one of the most predictable American IPA’s I’ve had in a while. This could pass for a Sierra Nevada product, and I mean that as a compliment. It’s very clean and balanced with classic American flavors of bready malts and piney hops. The nose lets on a little citrus, like grapefruit and distinct evergreen notes. This is a beer that I would always enjoy having as a faithful standby.
2.8 Appearance: super clear golden color, pours with a very large beige head, head settles into a medium head with nice density Aroma: kind of faint, grass, pine, citrus, hints of malt Taste: grass, pine, bitterness especially on the finish, Palate: leaves a strong bitter aftertaste, moderate to light mouthfeel, Overall: not bad but nothing that special either, not enough hop character besides the bitterness, faint aroma,
3.2 Pours a golden color with a decent head that fades to some lacing. Aroma of citrus, malt, bit of caramel sweetness and grassy. Taste of citrus, malt sweetness and a bit of grain. Nice bitterness and a dry finish. Medium body, crip and refreshing. Nicely balanced. Pleasant beer, goes well with spicy seafood.
3.2 An ok IPA, it has that classic IPA taste. However, it has a light body and a simple taste, but a rather bitter finish.
3.3 Best by 14FEB12 A: golden, finger of white foam sticks around as a thick quilt. excellent clarity and spotty lace. (4) s: Resiny and piny hops with a lighter malt profile. (3) T: Pine and grapefruit rinds, some resin. soft bittering and sweet, biscuity malt. (3.5) M: medium bodied with moderate carb, semi dry finish. (3) O: better when fresh than elder. Decent IPA. (3) Best by 16DEC11 A: golden with a finger of white soap suds. These fall to a broken sheet of the same. Spotty lace and brilliant clarity. (4) S: Almost a helles like malt profile with sweet wisps of vanilla. Grassy and piny hops over the top. Substandard for nose on an IPA (2) T: Malt is forward and again, a bit sweet. The hops are bitter and grassy with some hints of resin. Simple. (3) M: Thin with hi carb and wet finish. (3) O: A middle of the road IPA. I like to drink it when I’m poor; at $2.50/bomber, it’s hard to pass up. (3) Serving type: bottle 12-20-2011
3.6 Appearance was clear gold with diminishing creamy white 1/2 finger head, spotty lacing. Aromas are citrus fruits and slight pale, crystal malts, no alcohol. Taste was mild sweet backbone, tangerine, orange, grapefruit and pine with soft yeasts. Palate was soft smooth tight CO2 with medium body, then soft fruity lasting bitterness. A good mild English style IPA.
3.3 12oz bottle pours pale amber color without much head. Mild hop flavors that are more like an APA.
2.9 Poured a clear golden amber colour with a one- to two-finger off white foamy head that retained OK and laced well. Carbonation low. Aroma of fresh hops, citrus (lemon, grapefruit) with a trace of sweet caramel malt. Taste with mild hops bitterness, citrus and a trace of malt. Medium body. Crisp, clean, dry, with a long bitter finish.
3.4 pours hazy gold with a thickish off white head. Nice lacing. Aroma is slightly floral and sweet, indescript candy. Taste is crisp and bright. Not particularly bitter or super hoppy, but pleasant. Nice notes of the hops on the finish and nasal linger. A clean, enjoyable brew!
3.0 Btl pours hazy golden color. Nice thick head that hangs around for a while leaving good lace on glass. Faint sweet malt smell with intense tangerine and grapefruit aroma. Lightly sweet malty taste with fresh, crisp, citrusy hop flavor.Light body, thin texture with soft carbonation and mild bitterness. Not quite as balanced as I would like. Decent IPA, but lacks depth in body and in your face hop flavor.
3.4 Pours light yellow with a small head. Aroma is citrus and pine. Some floral. Not overly bitter, with hardly any malts making an appearance. Thin on the tongue. A good IPA.
3.6 12oz bottle pours a yellowish orange color with a medium white head that leaves decent lacing smells of pine, citrus and resin. Tastes of the same things in the smell. Mouthfeel is medium and creamy with great carbonation. Pretty average west coast ipa. Citrusy and hoppy better on tap.
3.2 Pale yellow body, some white head, quickly fading. Nice floral and herbal aroma. Taste is a mid medicinally bitter, also floral, some citrus. Pretty average IPA.
3.2 Pours very light yellow with minimal light head. Aroma of citrus, grapefruit, and light pine. Taste is moderately sweet and balanced with bitter notes. Oily finish with a weak body. Decent
3.5 This is a decent ipa, a bit more piney hops aroma & flavor than some other ipa’s, but I’ll buy it again
3.6 Nice, crisp, tart IPA. Hazy golden with thick creamy head. Aroma of yellow grapefruit. Taste is citrus hops, and hops linger on the palate. This is a classic IPA , all about the hops.
2.7 Bottle from a local grocery store. Pours a yellow color and smelled of herbal hop. Lots of hop with not much of a malt balance. Little off on the palate.
3.9 Pours a pale yellow orange color with a thick fluffy white head. A nice looking brew. Full citrus aroma. Orange tropical notes in the nose followed into the taste. A quality bitter finish. Slight caramel and honey in the back taste. Overall a nice drinkable IPA.
3.6 Thajos to reimer for this. Pours cloudy golden with a small withe top. Aroma is citrus hops and slight vegetal malt. Taste is bright citrus hops flavour and bitterness. Very pleasant.
2.0 Pours golden color, stale, cardboardy nose, hops absent on the nose and palate, finishes tired. Will try again as this bottle must have been heated in transit.
3.5 Pour is clear golden with white head and ok lacing. Aroma of citrus, floral, herbal, light pine, caramel. Taste is citrus, floral hops, caramel, moderately sweet. Low body and medium carb. Honest IPA.
2.9 12oz bottle while at pain in the grass. Can only get some aroma outta the bottle. Light citrus and hops, grassy. Taste is citrus and grassy. Quite lack lustre.
3.4 355 ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden with a short lived white head. Aroma is hops, citrus, herbal. Flavor is grains, fruity. Finish has a good hoppy punch, mostly citrus-flavored (grapefruit). Very fruity, overall, with a nice herbal touch at the end. Some earthy quality in there, too. Medium body, average carbonation. Complex bitterness IPA with a good drinkability.
3.6 bottle from VT, thanks bro. pours hazy but bright yellow with a small white cap, some retention and lacing. pale crisp malts, pepper, citrus, bit of pine, floral, strawberry-like hops, barely dank, fruitiness - peaches, hint of spices. average carbonation, light body - some texture, nice dry herbal-citrusy finish. relatively simple, balanced, quaffable and enjoyable.
2.9 Not bad. Nice sweet citrus aromas. Bitter floral and dandelion finish. A bit on the watery side too. Very average.
4.1 Slightly above average ipa. Touch of grapefruit. Fresh. Slight spice. From total wine Arizona Glendale. Almost dry aftertaste at first then lingers hops. I'd hit a sixer.
4.0 Solid IPA. Very drinkable and not too much of anything definitely would try again
4.0 Appearance: Pours a 2" white head that recedes very slowly leaving moderate lacing. Abundant carbonation evident. Color is slightly cloudy golden-orange. Aroma: pleasant sweet tangerine and bready malt background. Mouthfeel: between light and medium with a somewhat dry finish. Flavor: sweet tangerine, bitter citrus rind, toffee, crusty white bread. Overall: an excellent IPA, really enjoyed this well balanced brew.
