Ale Asylum Contorter Porter

Ale Asylum Contorter Porter

This medium-bodied ale is dark in color and deceiving on the palate. The glassy smooth finish of this beer is your first hint that dark in color doesn't always mean heavy in stomach.

3.5 Bottle. Deep brown with a full sized light brown head. Very malty, a little chocolate and ash and an earthy background. Flavor has a light malty sweetness and a long dry finish. Medium bodied with a foamy feel.
2.5 12 oz. bottle. Pours black like every other newage Porter. The aroma is not clean, but not English esters either, maybe a bit of a vanilla character. The taste is very roasty and I am getting some black licorice which I do not care for. Not as bitter as a lot of the competition. Pretty good, but there are a lot of better Porters out there.
3.1 Bottle from madbeerbaron. Pours deep brown with caramel border. Aroma is faint coffee(espresso?), maybe some cocoa, and bread. Taste is rich malt, some light coffee notes. Not a deep flavor but nice and smooth.
4.7 Bottle. Flavor is very chocolately, with a coffee or espresso taste. Very smooth, with lots of flavor, but also drinkable. A great porter!
2.6 Chocolate is the theme here. It makes its initial announcement in the aroma when Contorter is poured, influences the taste and continues through the sweet, chocolatey finish. Deceptively thin body. Dozens of better porters out there.
3.5 Good coconut porter, couldnt taste all of the coconut but pretty good chocolate
2.9 Tiefschwarze Farbe mit beigem Schaum. Sehr toller caramelmalziger Schoko-Espresso-Geruch. Schade. --> 10/12/8/9
3.1 Bottle. Brown. Lots of malt chocolate and is pretty sweet in taste. Pretty thin body.
3.2 Bottle. Deep brown with minimal head. Big malt aroma. Chocolate and licorice. A bit weird and thin.
4.0 Poured from a bottle, opaque black, with an off why head that quickly goes away. Not much of a aroma. As you drink the Coffee overtone of the malts come through. Very little hop taste. Classic Porter and a very good beer if you are not looking for anything hoppy.
3.8 12 oz. bottle. Pours brown/black with a thin foamy khaki head that fades to a wispy film and collar. Aroma has good roasted malt little coco and coffee and faint vanilla/toffee. Taste starts bitter with roasted malt some coffee and bakers chocolate and slightly nutty. Palate is thin to medium with a dry finish. Very easy drinking porter with good flavors.
3.8 Tasted on tap at Ale Asylum. Dark brown to black in color with an off white head. Roasted malt aroma and taste.
3.4 Had it on tap at Ale Asylum in Madison Wi. Poured a dark black hue with no head or lacing. Slight coffee aroma with an equally subtly tasting coffee taste.
4.0 Draft at the brewpub. Midnight black. A coffee monster ... All the way in the aroma and flavor. Silky smooth on the palate, this would be great for breakfast. (#5115, 7/2/2013)
3.4 Bottle. Pours opaque brown, medium tan head, good lacing. Aroma is roasted malt and cigarettes. Flavor is the same with a bit of old chocolate. Light sWeet, astringent, and bitter.
3.5 Dark brown. Medium light brown head, reducing, partially lasting. Aroma is roasty, chocolate, coffee, some caramel. Flavor matches. Slick light to medium body. Tasty and drinkable.
3.2 Pours a very hazy, dark brown with a half finger of tan head that does not dissipate. A lot of sediment, so I guess you can take this review for what it’s worth. Had aromas of roasted malts, vanilla, toffee, and molasses. Real sweet all the way down. Medium bodied beer, slick and sticky mouthfeel. Strong toffee aftertaste lingers for a while. Decent beer, I am going to look out a fresher version in the future.
3.5 Pours pitch black with a finger of mocha, bubbly head and a decent amount of lacing. There is a TON of sediment in this beer. Nose is very chocolatey with hints of vanilla and strong roasted malt. A unique anise note is hidden behind the roast. Mouth is very chocolatey with anise coming through again. A perfect roastiness is present. medium body with a very smooth finish.
5.0 Great beer from a great brewery!! Has a wonderful bitter chocolate flavor and a coffee like quiality that is really really nice.
3.0 Uploading old ratings that were missing comments. Innocuous porter with just enough roastiness to conform to the style. Not terrible but I wouldn't seek it out again.
3.4 Pours dark brown with a slight tan head. Aroma is heavy on nuts, caramel, and sweet malt. Also a bit of chocolate. A very smooth body with subtle bitter notes and a bit of a sweetness. Finishes very smooth.
3.0 A dark brown porter with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with light butterscotch notes. In mouth, a smooth sweet chocolate with herbal notes, a bit light. On tap at brewpub, Jan 20 2012.
3.2 Dark brown, coffee and roasted malt aroma. Strong coffee, roasted, almost smokey flavor. More flavor than body, and finishes quickly.
3.4 Bottle: Dark brown with a small ring head. Heavy choco-coffee aromas with a little sweet alcohol. Blunt coffee grounds flavor with a thin body. Slighty bitter and watery aftertaste.
3.7 Catching up on old ratting. On tap and in the bottle. The coffee flavors that come through always continue to surprise me. More roast than anything, but very good.
3.6 Easy drinking porter. Chocolate, roasted malt, caramel . Medium bodied, and lighter on the palette than you’d expect. Nice to have a "winter" beer that goes down easy. Another winner from Ale Asylum.
3.5 On tap at the brewery. Comes dark brown with a small biege head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, sweet chocolate, caramel, and coffee. Nice porter.
3.5 pour is black with light tan head and lots of large bubbles. Nose is light fudge and chocolate cake, notes of tobacco and roast with a light green finish. Taste is much thinner, more roasted and leathery tobacco, thin finish and assertive carbonation. Not as put together and rich in the flavor but not bad.
3.9 Cola-colored, with a thin head. This is just plain delicious, a roasted, nutty dark chocolate flavor with floral hints and less of the coffee and soy sauce that overpower most porters. Some might find it a little watery or off-the-mark in taste, but I for one applaud Ale Asylum for making a dark beer so approachable and drinkable.
3.5 Poured into a pint glass. 2.5 A: Black color. I couldn’t muster much of a head despite an aggressive pour. 4.0 S: This smells more like dark chocolate than maybe any other brew I’ve ever had. Lightly grainy malts with a healthy sweetness that enhances the rich, dark chocolate vibe. 4.0 T: Taste also brings about dark chocolate, but only a fraction of what the nose suggested. Still, this has depth and richness with a moderate sweetness and roastiness. Not super complex though. Still, quite tasty. 4.0 M: Heavier medium body. A little undercarbonated, but not by much. Rich and viscous and I imagine this would be quite creamy if there was more carbonation. 4.0 D: Tasty beer. This is how I prefer my porters, with a little girth on them.
