Aleman / Two Brothers / Stone DayMan Coffee IPA

Aleman / Two Brothers / Stone DayMan Coffee IPA

Jim Moorehouse, Nate Albrecht and Brad Zeller, three pals planning to open a Chicago brewpub under the moniker of Aleman, won first place at last year’s Iron Brew homebrewing competition in the Windy City (judged by none other than Greg Koch, Jason Ebel of Two Brothers Brewing, and celebrated Chicago brewer, designer and author Randy Mosher). Their style-bending IPA artfully married the assertive tropical bite of Citra hops with amazing coffee flavor and aromatics to create something truly unique and exceptional.

Serendipitously, Two Brothers recently kicked off a new adventure roasting their own coffee beans, and provided just-in-time freshly roasted java for the brew. The result is an innovative IPA that’s well balanced and intensely flavored thanks to the felicitous blend of hops and fresh roasted coffee.

3.6 Don’t know if this was on tap or someone shared a bottle - but it was up at Proof. Aroma is floral, citrus and roasty malts. Tastes are coffee and more of the floral bitterness. Interesting experiment for sure. 7.2
3.4 Blind Tiger, NY tap: Pours amber with a whitish head. Aroma is a combination of ground coffee and citrus hops, but I think that the coffee is a little more dominant. In fact, I think that there could have been a little bit more hops. Taste is much the same. Loads of coffee, balancing well with the hops and malts. Personally, I think that the Mikkeller coffee IPA is better.
3.5 Bottle poured a golden color with aromas of hops, light citrus, coffee, and some pine. Flavors are the same, mostly citrus and coffee mixed together, interesting overall.
4.4 Bottle with friends at home. This is my 3rd dayman...just as good this time for the most part. Pours almost ruby grapefruit in color. Nice lacing. Aroma is spicy and hoppy, roasted espresso. Taste follows the aroma closely, but even more coffee and hops flavor. Medium body and nice mouthfeel. One of the most interesting beers I’ve ever had
4.2 Bottle from trade with coldbrewky, many thanks Steve. Hazy dark orange color with medium off-white head. Aroma of tangerines, malt, notes of coffee, piney hops. Taste, tangerines, honey, tangerine zest, tropical fruits, coffee, earthy and herbal notes, citrus and piney hops. Long hoppy finish. Extremely tasty beer.
3.7 Amber pour with a cream head. Coffee, hops, bitter, and espresso. Nice palate, coffee, bitter, fruity, chewy, malty finish.
3.8 Bottle shared by jmagnus! Pour is clear orange with white head, tons of hops up front followed by a nice smooth coffee. Really blends nicely as you drink more.
4.1 Incredibly dry aroma - grapefruit zest, floral bitterness, background ripe tropical fruit.
2.6 In short: A glass of clean fruity American IPA and a glass of cold coffee mixed together. Not my cup of tea.. How: Bottle 22oz, consumed relatively fresh less than 2 months after the beer initial release. The look: Clear golden body topped by a medium off-white head leaving lots of lacints on the glass. In long: I was sceptical about this whole gimmick but the aroma quickly showed me that these guys are serious about this gimmicky beer. Aroma is as much a cold cup of black coffee as it is fruity hops. Kind of strange I must say. Taste is… well… it is indeed a coffee IPA. Clean polished toasted malt backbone with only a bit of caramel, coffee, fruity hops, medium bitterness. This is really like taking a sip of typical American IPA and a sip of cold black coffee at the same time. Mikkeller tried the same gimmick with their two Koppi Tomahawk beers, but those were a lot more IPAs than coffee. This Dayman IPA is disturbingly coffee forward. A very well made beer that will sure please a lot of people. But to me this coffee ipa was two things I love that should never be put together, like a porn movie starring french fries.
4.3 Bottle at Three Aces Chicago. Poured clear amber orange with white head. Crazy good aroma of ground coffee and mild citrus. Quite smooth pleasant coffee balanced hop taste. I am very pleased. Mild for an IPA.
3.7 Bottle:   Fireweed honey in color, very fiery, moderate frothy off-white head, decent lacing.   Wow, big coffee aroma, freshly ground.   Seriously, I dont get any IPA out of the aroma, just fresh ground coffee.   Very soft IPA aspects on the tongue.   Coffee still brings up the rear at this point, but not heavy.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes with a very moderate IPA, slightly hoppy, but again the background is fresh ground coffee.   This is an odd duck, but it somehow works.   The coffee on the nose doesn’t come across as that strong on the tongue.   The IPA aspect could be stronger, but as is its not overshadowed by the coffee.   Only a little coffee aspect lingers with the bitterness.   Clean, smooth, and very different.   Coffee IPA, who would have thought.
3.6 22 oz bottle poured a vivid orange into a pint glass. Decent sized head that faded at a moderate pace and left light, spidery lacing. Pretty big roast coffee aroma with some earthy hop notes and the lightest hint of citrus. The coffee is also definitely the biggest note on the flavor profile, with some grapefruit and a nice bit of lemon rind and some definite caramel sweetness. Overall the coffee kind of overwhelms the hoppiness, but still a solid beer I hope they brew again someday.
2.9 Not much coffee and not much IPA here. Very light. Citra hops are lost here. I have had much better local coffee beers.
3.7 22oz bottle, pours orange tan with some lace. A mix of grassy pine hops and coffee aromas. Upfront malt nutty sweetness. Very earthy coffee flavors with a nice hop mix. Weird combination.
4.1 3/28/13. Sampled during CBC 2013, at Churchkey, I believe. Orange pour with a small khaki head that sticks. Citrus and coffee on the aroma, a nice balance of hop and coffee. Lightly bitter flavor, hoppy with just enough coffee. I really enjoyed this.
3.8 On tap at Malt and Vine, Tasting notes from 3/21/13 poured into 4 oz. Snifter sample glass pours a light orange color with a light tan head that leaves good lacing. Smells of coffee, citrus, and pine. Tastes of coffee and citrus with a slight hop bite in the back end. Mouthfeel was smooth and creamy with great carbonation and a semi dry finish. Overall I think this was a great tasting and unique brew. I thought the coffee flavor overpowered the ipa elements slightly though. Wish I could have found a bottle but they sold out before I could find one. At least I got to try it on tap during a Stone tasting though.
3.3 Has an instant coffee taste that is alright but nothing special. A drinkable beer but is missing something.
3.4 Bomber from Sam’s, Durham. Having been pleasantly surprised by my first coffee IPA (the Mikkeller), I was hoping for good things here. Fairly lively copper pour with a fluffy head. Nose is leafy one moment, bright the next, with the coffee pretty muted at first. Flavors are richer and fuller, with moderate chocolate and wood framing the slightly more assertive coffee flavors. Citrus in there but a bit buried, and something overall came across as a bit thin and artificial. It was decent but a disappointment somehow.
3.5 Drank at jimmy buffet at va beach. Clear golden pour with fair offwhite head. Smells and tastes much better than I expected. Coffee aroma and flavor are prevalent, but noy overpoweribg for yhe base sryle. Pretty tasty, but not something I feel the need to drink again.
3.7 Bottle. Very pretty dark gold pour with thin white head. Interesting aroma of cold brewed coffee, quite hoppy, much more than the few other coffee IPAs I’ve tried, coffee notes are vegetal, but quite roasty as well, not like raw coffee. Flavor of coffee, nice hoppy finish, quite fruity without being sweet. Med-full palate with med carbonation, dry finish. Tasty.
4.6 Bottle. This is a beer designed with me in mind. I've loved the coffee stouts and porters I've had in the past, but was very curious about how coffee would work in an IPA. Verdict: Better than I could have ever imagined. I will be horribly disappointed if this actually ends up being a one-off and doesn't end up getting long term distribution.
3.7 It poured a clear copper color with a thin off-white head. The aroma was of fresh coffee, piney west coast hops, some grapefruit and then coffee again. The taste was similar with a nicely bitter finish. Not over the top, but very well done.
3.5 Bottle share. Slightly hazy orange. Aroma of coffee, citrus, fruit. Taste is apricot, pine, coffee, spicy bite.
3.6 Golden orange with a small pale head. Aroma is coffee, passionfruit, citrus. Medium bodied, quite sweet for an IPA, slightly bitter coffee finish. Taste is coffee, orange, passionfruit, honey. Quite nice.
4.1 Got in a trade with TopsecretWaffle. 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 3/1/2013. Pours lightly hazy deep orange amber color with a 2 finger dense cream colored head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big roasted coffee, grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, orange rind, floral, light pine, caramel, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop notes with coffee; and good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, orange rind, floral, roasted coffee, caramel, pine, and floral earthiness. Fair amount of pine and coffee bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, roasted coffee, floral, caramel, pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice flavor balance and complexity of coffee and hop flavors; with a moderate malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent coffee IPA. All around nice balance and complexity of coffee and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
3.8 This experimental IPA has a dark, orange in color, hazy and semi-opaque with a short-lived, bright white head. The aroma is AWESOME. Its nose is mostly of what seems like smoke and heavily-roasted coffee grounds. It has such a good nose of coffee for such a light-colored beer. The flavor is mostly of wet, muddy coffee and a touch of paprika. As crazy as it sounds for an IPA, it’s soft on the palate, only slightly sweet, with a touch of herbal hops. Delicious!
4.2 Poured from a bomber, from a trade, thanks Devin. Aroma is caramel, coffee, citrus, orange, and pine. Flavor is citrus, pine, orange, chocolate, caramel, and coffee. Wow great beer, was a little skeptical about this but wow it delivered!! Great brew!!
4.1 22oz bottle. This is easily one of the most unique brews I’ve had all year, maybe ever. Deep amber brew, off-white head. The combination of fresh ground coffee and citrus hops is nothing short of incredible. Lots of grapefruit, some pine. Finish is bitter but nowhere near over done.
4.3 On tap. Pours an amber color with white head. Aroma is coffee, hops, and roasted malts. Taste is citrus hops and a very good coffee flavor. The coffee blends well with the hops. I was a little skeptical about this beer but it turned out to be very nice.
3.6 Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a caramel-amber color with a small foamy beige head that left decent lacing. The aroma was pine, fruity hops and hints of coffee, wood and brown sugar. The flavor was malty and sweet with notes of coffee, honey and faint piney hops. Medium length pine and coffee finish. Moderately full bodied. Interesting.
