4.2 Bottle. Courtesy of t0rin0. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty woody chocolate aroma. Roasted malty woody bourbon and chocolate flavor. Has a roasted malty woody bourbon finish with hints of chocolate and caramel in the aftertaste.
4.0 Bottle from someone who is awesome for trading it to me. Consumed for 34th birthday. Pours darkest brown-almost black with tan head. Nose and taste of bourbon, graham cracker, nutty malt, roast chocolate malt, caramel toffee, sherry, vanilla and oak. Full bodied. A little oxidized but solid. Held up pretty well.
4.4 750 ml. bottle shared by AgentSteve. Thanks! It pours a very dark brown with a tan head. The aroma is toasty, nutty, chocolate, subtle barrel notes with vanilla. The flavor is just amazing. Dry, toasty, nutty with some spicy barrel notes in the mid palate finishing off with chocolate and subtle bourbon. Very complex with the typical stellar Alesmith barrel influence. This one is holding up incredibly well.
4.1 Bottle... Poured near, but not quite black - with a thin, light brown/more tannish head. This was quite the treat. Big time whiskey, bourbon, vanilla, wood, oak, roast and charred wood flavors. Malty, dark fruits, dessert like cake batter, and molasses. Everything you’d expect with a beer like this.
4.7 Final bottle at Markwise’s Bday bash, and its one hell of a bottle to end on, thanks Mark for the share. Poured a dark black color, aromas of bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, wood, and roasted malt. Flavors are the same, amazing beer overall, this might have been the highlight of the night.
4.5 373/817. Big thanks to zathrus13 for this gem. Pours from a bottle into a snifter a murky black color with a light brown head that leaves a ring and a small layer. Smell is bourbon and woody with a sweet Carmel and chocolate flavor. This beer tastes amazing!!!! It’s very mild flavor. It is a porter and a very great one at that!!!! Taste is on a thiner side, but it’s a porter. This was has held up GREAT!!!!! Thanks a ton Jeff.
4.4 # 2100. Bottle # 476/817. Pours a pitch black with a medium sized tan head. Aroma of warm bourbon, chocolate, prunes, dark malts, coconut notes and hints of vanilla. Taste of bourbon, chocolate, prunes, malts, coconut and vanilla. Very nice.
4.8 750ml, gold-foiled bottle, #527/817 courtesy of myself. stunned i’m finally able to rate this beauty. pours a deep, dark, mocha brown with a thick, rich, creamy, beige head that has wonderful retention and leaves thick, sticky sheets of lace on my snifter. aroma is absolutely fantastic with huge notes of bitter, dark chocolate, vanilla cake, coconut-creme icing, and charred oak up front backed by rich, toffee nougat, spiced bourbon, and molasses with subtle notes of leather, woody earth, and espresso as it warms. flavor is simply stunning as well with rich, dark, chocolate cake, toffee, and burnt espresso up front that smoothly transitions to notes of charred oak, vanilla, pralines, and sweet coconut backed by subtle notes of fondue’d pineapple, cherries, and spicy bourbon. palate is wickedly rich, smooth, and a touch denser than the base version with a long, lingering, semi-sweet barrel forward finish. overall, an absolutely outstanding barrel aged imperial porter that deserves it’s lofty status.
4.0 Bottle nr. 540/817 - looks really, really good. Beer in the glass deep black, small head. Complex-malty aroma, a bit woody. Starts strong, malty-woody, dry with some sweet notes. Also hints of coffee. Finish shows a bit more balanced malty notes, but still complex, hints of liquorice and vanilla. Warming aftertaste. A great beer!
4.5 When I bought this beer I imagined what it would taste like and it turned out to be exactly what I wanted. Just a testament to how good Alesmith is. Pours with a slightly viscous body and khaki head that has good retention. Smells of dark and milk chocolates, roasted malts, chocolate milk, molasses, black licorice and coffee liquor. The taste follows these lines with the alcohol playing a bigger role than I expected. Not exactly hot but tempered. The roasted malts, chocolates and coffee notes blend very nicely with a little molasses/malt sweetness. The back brings out burnt caramel/malt notes with a decent piney hop prescence. The finish is not the most inviting flavors to bring about another sip but there is so much going on in taste that I’m constantly sipping.
4.6 Wow, huge thanks to Jason for opening this big want! #474/817. Pours thick black, very slight brown edges, with nice lasting almost tan head. Aroma has notes of bourbon, vanilla, roast, slight booze, chocolate, burnt coffee, slight sweet dark fruit, and a touch of molasses. Taste is extremely unexpected, with notes of toffee, chocolate up front with some of the bourbon and vanilla, but a big tropical fruit middle with pineapple and almost some mango, going into some more bourbon, some roast and coffee, finishing chocolatey, dry, delicious.
4.4 750mL bottle, #474/817. Poured very deep brown with a couple fingers’ worth of sticky tan head.. set up great in the glass! There was definitely bourbon in there from the aroma.. digging deeper revealed blackened malts and vanilla.. it was too skewed toward the barrel, but I enjoyed the bourbon. The flavor found something I totally didn’t expect to see.. sweet, tasty bourbon was joined by a bouquet of tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, and passion fruit come to mind).. drier chocolates and molasses joined toward the back.. more tangy bourbon and oak on the finish. Heavier-bodied with enough carbonation to keep it moving through the palate.. chewy and most excellent all around!
3.5 Thanks to a generous BA for bringing this bottle to DLD and to AgentZero for grabbing a tickable pour for me. Served in a SAVOR snifter. Pour yields a nearly-black brew with a light mocha head that lasts for a bit before falling into a thin collar. The nose is pretty nice with some notes of vanilla, oak, bourbon, mildly-roasted malt, and chocolate. Pretty good complexity, but nothing out of this world. The flavor is on par with that--perhaps a bit stronger overall, though brought down by an increased alcohol presence. Good barrel character with bourbon, oak, and vanilla, though it’s surprising there’s still this much heat. Medium body and pretty smooth, other than the alcohol. Pretty good. Glad to finally have tried this one. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 05-10-2011
4.0 Bottle shared during AZRBWG. Pour was black with a khaki head. Aroma shows notes of roasted malt, dark chocolate, bourbon, caramel, vanilla, and some baking spice characteristics. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of figs, dates, and molasses. Overall body is full and oily with some warming alcohol on the finish.
3.5 This beer is very dark black with a surprsingly light tan head. The head only comes about a half of finger and is gone right away. The lacing is ok. The aroma is way to light. There is some chocolate and vanilla, but not a whole lot going on there. The taste is nothing special. There is some light coffee taste with a very bitter ending. Its a little disappointing overall. The feel is ok and the drinkability is down.
3.9 (sampled at RBWG 2011-Phoenix!). Pours hazy cola color with tan head. Aroma has smooht bourbon goodness with caramel notes. Taste follows suit with some alcohol bur. Thin to medium bodied with a slick texture. Finish is smooth, but a bit hot. A nice beer that I was very happy to try.
4.1 750mL thanks to Dstructo. The pour is a deep mahogany with a creamy, thick yellow head. Excellent retention and big webby lace. Aroma is amazing buttery bourbon, cinnamon, nutmeg. Taste is extremely soft, no hot booze, cloves, cinnamon, smoked meat. On the palate it is pretty oaky and tannic but also massively buttery and oily without diacetyl. Yummy yum yum.
4.3 Bottle courtesy of tarheels86, with a little help from Jean van Roy. Pours very dark brown, small beige head with good retention. Aroma of wood, vanilla, nuts, dates, alcohol. Taste is very smooth and mellow, very rich and roasty, with alcohol showing through. Good stuff.
4.6 Poored a deep black with little head. Nose of chocolate, coffee, and bourbon. Tast much like the regular Porter, but with a huge bourbon kick. One of the best beers I have ever had.
4.4 (Bottle) pours dark brown, almost black in the glass. Small light brown head. The aroma surprisingly fruity with cocoanut-ish oak up front (vanilla ice cream and wood also notable). Warming alcohol, caramel and milk chocolate/coco powder/truffles in the undertones. A yummy dried fruitiness (figs and prunes) grows stronger as the beer gets warmer. Subtle tobacco and suede. Spicy European hops way in the background. Very soft, round and almost milky in the nose. The flavour is near medium sweet and light to medium bitter. Very chocolaty and fruity with big oak tones. Numbing alcohol, caramel, mild roast, spicy oak and hops in the finish. The mouthfeel is soft, velvety and tiny tannin-ish. Medium to full bodied. Another fantastic beer from Ale Smith.
4.0 Blackish brown pour with a thin off white head. Huge vanilla, roasted grain, chocolate aroma. Very smooth roasted grain, chocolate taste with vanilla notes smoothing any harshness. Really good.
3.9 25.4 oz bottle. Dark brown with spongy tan froth from a stiff pour. Strong bourbon in the nose; coffee, vanilla and bitter chocolate in the back. Medium body with a tingle. Taste also heavy on the bourbon with chocolate and caramel struggling to emerge. Woody coffee finish. Better without the barrel.
4.4 tasting on 9/18/10 in the basement of Falling Rock. black pour with a tan head. bourbon barrel nose with chocolate and spice. big body full of oak, chocolate, vanilla, dark fruit, light bourbon and dark malts. wooden finish with more malts. thanks to whoever poured this one!
3.7 Very dark brown. Smooth tasting. It reminds me of a brown ale kind of. Smells like chocolate. A pretty good beer
4.6 Thanks mspindler for the taster. From 22oz,dark brown in color, vanilla, very rich chocolate flavor, more sweeter, bourbon,Medium body.I wish they made more beers like this.
4.4 Bottle pours black with tan head. Aroma is vanilla and a shot of whiskey. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is upfront booze, vanilla, booze, and a touch of grain. Before this brew we had the regular version and this one didn’t have any of the complexity the base brew had. It was totally dominated by the booze. After it warmed up is began to show more layers of complexity. More grain and booze shined through. I really enjoyed this either way.
4.9 long sought after bottle courtesy of ajm, thanks! what is there to say, this stuff rocks! its a massive importer with a huge and well balanced bourbon presence. delicious, enough so that you can literally drink the entire bottle by yourself!
4.1 Thanks jhenry04. Poured very black, bourbon, chocolate, molasses, wood, little coffee, little dark fruit.
3.5 In short: An excessively bourbonny stout/porter. Good beer but much inferior to the regular one. How: Bottle 750ml. Consumed about 15 months after the beer release side by side with a bottle of the regular version. Sent to me by MakeItaBanquet. Thank you so much Ben The look: Black body topped by a medium tan head with good retention In long: Nose has a lot bourbon (like all AleSmith BA brews). The rich chocolate cake of the regular version is totally dominated by the bourbon barrels. Vanilla, bourbon, oil, coconut, caramel. The sweetness level is way to high, almost ST Crème Brule level. Somehow the residual sugars are even more apparent in this BA version and the beer feel way way too sweet. The creamy slimy body is not as satisfying as with the regular version. Again I am disappointed by a BA AleSmith. This is not a bad beer, not bad at all, but it is just huge step down from the original. It was a fun test to open both the BA and regular Decadence 2007 side-by-side but it was just too much Decadence 2007 for one person. And to be honest with the regular version being so superior to the regular version I even poured down some of the BA bottle in the drain. An act that most ratebeerians probably find as reprehensible as a Lousiana swimming pool store sending a thank-you note to BP
4.0 Bottle shared by Kan, thanks! Pours black with minimal small dark brown head. Aroma is full of dark grains and very barrel forwards with bourbon notes and a bit of underlying vanilla. Flavor is very dark as well with coffee and some vanilla. The bourbon is more mellow in the flavor but it does seem to build towards the finish.
