AleSmith Horny Devil

AleSmith Horny Devil

Horny Devil is our interpretation of a Belgian-style Golden Ale. Brewed with authentic Belgian ingredients including candi sugar and a Trappist yeast strain, its fruity and spicy aromas include notes of orange, banana, and peppercorns. Coriander seeds add refreshing citrus notes which meld seamlessly with the beer’s delicate malt. Horny Devil finishes with a lively carbonation and a refreshingly dry finish.

3.4 Sampled at the Minnesota Craft Beer Fest on April 13, 2019 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Strong, sweet, smooth, banana, light, syrupy.
3.3 AleSmith’s take at a ‘Belgian strong ale’ – a style moniker I prefer to avoid as all Belgian strong ales can essentially be reduced to the dubbel-tripel-quadrupel template, but anyway. Bottle from Geers in Oostakker near Ghent. Very unstable head, an even-bubbled, egg-white mousse that dissipates almost immediately after pouring, like the head on a glass of champagne; near-clear, deep and warm ‘old gold’ robe with pale peachy hue and a diffuse, thin yeast suspension throughout, more equally misty with sediment and showing fine strings of sparkling here and there. Aroma of cooked apples, (weirdly) homemade lemonade, pear drops, pineapple, banana, soapy coriander, lemon zest, orange peel, calvados, meringue, honey, white bread, old ‘herbes de Provençe”, minerals, gin. Sweet onset, again homemade lemonade and sugared lemon juice, fried apples, banana and ripe pineapple, lively carbonation with minerally effects but still smooth, slick mouthfeel, very slick even, a tad oily and a bit soapy; slender cereally and white-bready malt sweet body with lingering residual honeyish sugar sweetness, very thin caramelly touch, clear soapy coriander seed spiciness in the finish paired with a floral, very softly spicy hoppiness and followed by outspoken, yet not too harsh, warming calvados-like alcohol. Sweetness lingers. Credibly Belgian in overall profile – but American in its cleanness and smoothness, so in all, recognizably not made in Belgian as well; apple and pineapple esteriness are also notably stronger here than would usually be the case in a Belgian ‘strong blonde’ (and I had a whole lot of those). Belgian ales are not AleSmith’s forte, it seems – perhaps they better stick to the things they do to near-perfection, like stouts and IPAs, and leave ‘regular’ Belgian style beers to e.g. Allagash, if we must stay in America. As such: too sweet, too straightforward and a bit too boozy for me, but interesting and enjoyable nonetheless.
4.7 (nez candi, ~coriandre, levure, bouche ronde > savoureuse, nice rétro, power-end, nice hops-yeast, belge-excellente)
3.6 11.2 fl oz bottle. Pours orange. Banana, bubblegum, cloves, cereal, honey. Lively carbonation. Tasty.
3.5 In tap vintage 2017 at Mikkeller Warsaw. Clean pale amber pour with an off-white lacing. Nose: oxidation, butterscotch, creme brûlé. Mouth: sweet canditi, orange cookies, soft spiciness, panettone.
3.5 Barwa złota, piana średnia. Aromat cytrusowy, kolendrowy, solny, przyprawowy. W smaku cytruski, słody, przyprawy, kolendra, lekka drożdżowość. Fajne pifko.
3.9 Aroma is a standard Belgian ale affair, that bubblegum to the fore Taste, well there's a meer hint of a sourness that is then completely washed over by a sweet soft beer that rolls out a carpet of prickly notes behind it like pepper and coriander, ending with a lingering sweet sugar feel and a desire to have another sip to get handle on what just happened. But it's short somewhere in the taste and a little less bold than it should be. Nice but not quite hitting the mark .
3.5 Średniodrobna piana, jasny w prezencji. W smaku zgniła grucha i jabłko, alkohol na dalszym planie. Kwestionujący o prawowite przypisanie do stylu.
3.7 Hazy golden color with high head. Fruits and Belgian yeasts in aroma. Sweet taste with semidry finish and gently bitterness.
3.5 Clear, golden colour with quickly dissipating white head. Fruity and yeasty aroma. Light malty taste, some banana flavour, spices, somewhat dry. Low medium body, low carbonation, soft mouthfeel.
4.0 Piwo intensywnie cytrusowe, pomarańczowe – o wiele intensywniej, niż to się przyjęło w oryginalnych piwach belgijskich. Sporo także kolendry, ale nie na tyle, by piwo stało się przez to mydlane. Mocne wysycenie i niezła, chmielowa, ziołowa goryczka. Bardzo smaczne.
3.2 Taster at THBS. Pours a clear golden with a white head. Belgian yeasty stuff, banana, mint, straaaaaange.
3.7 Bottle sampled at Den Haag bottle share at Brody’s. Almost clear golden with white head. Quite some spicy yeast, sweet vanilla apple, sweet sugary malts, light alcohol, soft bread, milky, soft corn, custard. Quite sweet and medium bitter. Over medium bodied with quite some carbonation.
3.7 Draft at Brewdog Seven Dials. Dark gold with a thin white head. Spiced banana and Belgian notes. Lasting finish
4.3 Keg at BrewDog Seven Dials. Lovely aroma and loads of Belgian spice, banana and yeast. Full flavour and soft palate, like an absolutely fantastic Belgian pale.
4.1 Hazy , golden color. Big , white head. Fruits, bubblegum, candy sugar and Belgian yeasts in aroma. Sweet taste with semidry finish and gently bitterness.
3.8 Vom Fass @ Arrogant Swine Bushwick. Süsslich würziger Duft. Trockenfrüchte, Aprikose, Marzipan. Kräuter und ein Hauch Lakritze. Dazu Süssholz. Antrunk Süssholz, Gewürze, getrocknete Aprikose. Ziemlich dicht und wuchtig. Banane und Hefe. Triple Aromen. Etwas Kardamon. Alkohol ist da, aber nicht im Vordergrund.
4.5 Great as all of AleSmith’s beers. Cloudy golden-orange liquid. Medium formation foam with medium density. Kind of wooden lightly sweet aroma, something like caramel and banana. On mouth, such an awesome beer. You feel a little bit saison in the beginning, the caramel (but not sweet) in the middle and a bitterness, typical of the belgian ales, in the end of the sip. A really nice malty aftertaste. At all, a high balanced beer, with personality and absolutely worths the try.
4.6 Great as all of AleSmith’s beers. Cloudy golden-orange liquid. Medium formation foam with medium density. Kind of wooden lightly sweet aroma, something like caramel and banana, and the coriander at the end. On mouth, such an awesome beer. You feel a little bit sour at the beginning, the caramel (but not sweet) in the middle and a bitterness, typical of this kind of belgian ales, at the end of the sip. The coriander gives it a refreshing note, well balanced. A really nice malty aftertaste. At all, a high balanced beer, with personality and, considering its 10% ABV, very easy to drink, and absolutely worths the try.
3.2 From tap at BeerTemple, Amsterdam. Aroma is very estery with bubblegum, yeast, tons of coriander, sugar, sweet ripe fruits, and banana. Flavour is very sweet and only lightly bitter. Body is medium, a bit sticky in the mouth. Sweet and too heavy on the coriander, with bubblegum. Not the epiphany I expected considering it's Alesmith.
3.8 Trochę może za słodko jak dla mnie, ale w sumie to spiłem może ze 100 ml. Poprawię, to wrócę i napiszę więcej. Jak na razie naprawdę świetna Belgia i trochę fajnego chmielu. Bardzo soczyste, kojarzy się z pestkowcami, śliwkami. Pite razem z Gulden Draak - wypada dużo lepiej. Mniej mdłe, bardziej owocowe.
3.9 On tap at Beer NV. Crystal clear golden color. Thin white head. Clean crisp apple and fruity spice flavors. Some banana too. Very good example of the style.
2.9 19th December 2017. Ordered as part of a Flight in Crush & Brew, Temecula. Really pleased to see this, as I have wanted to try it for some time. Light golden pour, wispy head. sweet taste with coriander flavours within. If I hadn't known what it was I would have labelled it as 'Tramp Juice' because of it's sweetness and obvious alcohol level. Glad I've tried it, glad I didn't have to drink a lot though.
3.6 Taps hazy golden with a good eggshell head. Aroma presents fruity, yeasty, malty and butterscotch tones. Flavor features tropical fruit, yeasty, malty, and shy butterscotch tones. Mouthfeel offers fair body and good fizz. Devilishly good.
3.6 Tap at One More Beer Festival. Pretty classic belgian strong ale. Taste is light sweet, light bitter, some coriander touch in flavor.
3.8 From Sep 2006 Pours from foiled and capped 750ml a clear medium gold which turns to cloudy (further in to the bottle) with lots of bubbles and a medium sized head of foam that shrank very quickly leaving a fine layer with lacing. The smell is very lemony and spicy with notes of yeast and a pretty strong nose of alcohol. The taste, up front, is a very citric bitter/sour with the "mentioned on the label" Coriander and has notes of bread but... it's also very sweet, a Malt Liquor kind of sweetness...my initial impression is that the flavours aren't meshing very well together. After a few more sips, I'm starting to "see" and appreciate the harmony that *is* actually there and this becomes a fine sipper. The sweetness that I complained about earlier is now well balanced and in fact taken over by the spice and citrus from the hops. Oh and yes, there's certainly some warming from this 11%abv but Alesmith did a pretty fine job of hiding it. I might have to get some more of this for, what I'm sure will be, the upcoming harsh winter that is due here in Casper. Bottom line: My initial impression was so-so but the more I sipped on this Belgian Strong Pale Ale, the more it pleased my palate. My hat's off to Alesmith once again!
3.2 Rami Rami is drinking a Horny Devil by AleSmith Brewing Company at One More Beer Festival Taki przyzwoity jasny mocny belg, przy czym zjebanany kolendra. wole duvela ;)
3.9 Draught at One More Beer Festival Aroma-floral, hard candies Appearance-golden, clear, white foam, Taste-light sweetness, lightly bitter, lightly sour, Palate-medium body, sticky, average carbonation, long finish, Overall-very good
