AleSmith Olde Ale

AleSmith Olde Ale

Originally brewed in 2005 as the first in our annual Decadence series, AleSmith Olde Ale follows the tradition of classic British-style Old Ales. This rich, malt-forward ale showcases soft notes of currants and dried fruit along with complex dark sugars, all of which are balanced by a subtle bitterness derived from the addition of traditional English hops. AleSmith Olde Ale is ready to be enjoyed now or it can be aged upwards of twenty years to further enhance its amazing depth of flavor. A hearty ale designed to please Bacchus himself!

3.6 750ml bottle. Brown colour with average, frothy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Sweet-ish, malty and fruity aroma, notes of cherry, red berries, dried fruit, raisin, prune, date, whiffs of alcohol. Taste is moderately sweet malty, fruity, slightly sugary, notes of cherry, red berries, dried fruit, raisin, prune, date, fig, hints of caramel, some alcohol.
3.6 750ml bottle - shared by Sten - thanks! (7:4:7:4:14=3.6) Sweet aroma, malty and a bit savoury, dark dried fruit, some liquoricey spicing (Anna gets a touch of cinnamon sticks too). Sweet malty taste, some black treacle. Full palate, smooth stickiness, gentle carbonation. Really malty, some date or plum fruitiness, but rather sweet. Slightly rubbery liquorice finish. Hilariously American brew, given the commercial description, at least that made me laugh. That’s not supposed to sound negative, this is a good’un. Does a reasonable job of keeping the alcohol in check - clearly a hefty brew, but not getting actual booze here, then again the sugars are dominant.
3.9 Bottle from Mikkeller web shop cons 2017-08-03 Göteborg Alesmith Olde Ale Big Bottle AR: British fruitcake, raisins, prunes, dales AP: dark red brown, wee beige F: British fruitcake, raisins, prunes, dadels, 3,9
3.7 Bottled 2014. Brown color, small beige head. Sweet aromas of dried figs, plums, brown sugar, caramel and citrus. Sweet taste with alcohol, plums, brown sugar, banana, syrup, toffee and spices. Alcoholic finish.
3.5 Bottle at tasting. Aroma of sweet raisin, caramel and ripe fruit. Taste has raisin, caramel, bitter resinous hop, booze, ripe fruit and a boozy finish. Solid.
4.3 Aroma: Medium/heavy aroma of malts, caramel, dried fruit, dark fruit, chocolate, nuts and roasted malts. Appearance: Opaque red/brown beer with heavy yeast and with a slight/medium beige head. Taste/Palate: Starts medium/heavy sweet with malts, caramel, dried fruit, dark fruit and chocolate; ends slightly bitter and dry with nuts and roasted malts. Overall: This beer is intense, complex and balanced. Amazing complex flavour, full of sweet malt flavours and a decent amount of roasted malts too. Lovely dry nuts in the finish as well. So much perfect fruit of all kinds in the flavour. Perfect appearance and a great palate as well.
4.0 Sampled in a glass poured from a bottle, this ale had a dark brown murky pour and gave a light tan colored lasting head of bubbles that had a yellow tint to them, there was nice spots and small fingers of lacing on the glass, the nose was malty and had aromas of caramel, a little dark fruit that resembled raisin and fig, some alcohol esters, faint earth notes, caramel candy and dark sugar sweetness, the flavors were malty, intense toasted malt with caramel and a little toffee, and toasted sweet bread, the finish had a light alcohol bitterness with malt and sweetness following, the mouth feel was pretty full and layered the tongue, it was a little creamy and had soft to average carbonation, faint warmth with each sip, the nose was very malty, lots of caramel and caramel like notes, toffee and faint dark fruit, the flavor was similar with a light alcohol bitterness and warmth on the mouth, this beer would be a good sipper on a cold evening.
4.0 URUS 3.0 Aroma: caramel, toffee, raisins, vanilla, molasses, toast, dried fruits Taste: medium sweet, caramel, toast, raisins, dried fruits, vanilla
Złożone i świetne piwo.
4.1 0.75l bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. This is a cloudy looking darker reddish one. A nice big off-white head on the top, quickly fading but leaving lots of lacings on the sides of the glass. Smells really good. Fruity, dark berries, raisins, somewhat sugary. Not too sweet though. Mild needles. Å lovely aroma indeed. Tastes lovely also. It’s thick syrupy and oily in the mouth, soft prickling on the carbonation. Vinous in the taste. Oak woody, sweet red sticky berries. A little sharp alcohol. So complex and balanced. A lovely tasting old ale. Would not mind a revisit on this one. 18.07.2015
Corpo pieno, mediamente carbonata.
4.6 opalescent mahogany colour, minimal creamy yellowish-beige head; aroma of toffee, dried figs, walnut, citrusy and resiny notes; taste is the very same! it is a miracle - many thans, my friend, kapusil! it’s a perfect beer for celebration! :-)
4.5 0.75l bottle. Hazy dark amber body with a thin beige head. Aroma of caramel, toast, citrusy hops, nutmeg, raisins and dates. Taste of caramel, toast, orange zest, raisins and citrusy hops. Awesome. Even better that this is the 2500th rating of my friend Lore. Cheers!
3.9 Bottled in 2013. Just now opening this one up. Looking forward to it. 75CL, 3 finger tan head. Crap, realizing I should have saved this for AirForceHops who is coming in a few days. I’m so sorry dude. A very murky dark red. looks hazy, lots of yeast in the bottom of the bottle. Cherry pit, peach, old fruit, molasses and leather aromas. Really good carbonation. thick, dense, really soft carbonation. really a perfect example of a bottle conditioned english ale. ripe apple, burnt sugar, tobacco, charcoal, baked apple, sweetness fades to an oak + fuggle flavor. good stuff.
4.0 Bottle from 2013, as "Old Ale". Pours clear reddish chestnut, large creamy beige head, dissipates fairly quickly but with lots of residual and nice lacing. Aroma is malty, dried cherries, toffee, hints of cinnamon, toasted caramel, brown sugar, raisins, hints of sherry. Flavor is pretty sweet, light plus bitter, rich and malty with a light sherry note that is not really a detractor. Full body and creamy mouthfeel. Solid Old Ale.
4.1 Bottle from Beer Gonzo. Brown pour, no head. Aromas of raisin, dates, christmas cake, chocolate, toffee, walnut. Flavours of bonfire toffee, black treacle, chocolate cake, currants, raisin, some dark fruit. Exceedingly vinous (which is unsurprising). Long, warm sweet finish. Nice!
4.0 Bottle of 2010 Decadence. Pours a deep dark brown with a small off-white head that fades. Very sweet aroma, dates, figs, brown sugar, caramel, currants. Taste is rich and sweet, dates, currants, brown sugar, a hint of hobby bitterness and sharp booze on the finish. Lingering sweet booziness. Excellent and ages wonderfully.
4.1 Piana obfita, kremowa i drobna, barwa rubinowa, klarowna. Ps. Piwo ok półtora roku spędziło na leżaku.
3.8 bottle shared that poured a cola colored brown with no real head. nice sweet malty nose with some dried fruits and alcohol. flavor was truly olde ale style. really nice malt forward holding the dried dark fruits in the middle and finishing with that mild alcohol burn on the end. very tasty.
3.1 750 ml bottle. 2015 vintage. Thanks veliemboys! Pours a dark brown colour with a small off-white head. Aroma of strong sweet bread, some dried fruits and caramel. Flavour of heavy sweet bready malts, grassy bitterness, dried fruits, caramel and astrigent. Full bodied. Alcohol burns. Not my favourite.
3.8 75 cl bottle. 2015 vintage. Pours clear dark red color with a small head. Aroma is quite resinous and piney, caramel malts and some grassy hops. Flavor is resinous hoppy, malty, caramel sweetness, honey, some oak notes, strong carbonation, molasses. Good but I was expecting more smoothness and maybe more layers. 4424
3.7 750ml bottle. Pours reddish brown with a smooth head. Aroma of ripe fruits, berries, earthy notes, caramel, toffee and hints of syrup. Taste is sweetish, caramely and malty with some berries, toffee, syrup and berries. Finish is caramely, earthy and sweetish with some malts, toffee, berries and hints of ripe fruits. Feels like a mix of a heavy amber ale and an English barley wine. Quite a heavy slow sipper.
4.1 From bottleshare. Dark brown, beige head. Caramel, dark fruits, toffee, fudge. Sweet stuff. Smooth fullbodied, a bit of boozyness.
4.2 Bottle from Chmiel. Aroma: Toffee, strong wine, light alcohol, dried fruit, caramel. Appearance: Dark amber colour, low head. Taste: Really soft malts, caramel, toffee, dried fruit, light boozy alcohol, light spicy hopiness. Palate: Sweet finish, high body, low carbonation.
3.9 Deep brown with small off-white head. Port, plums, toffee, honey, chewy malts.
Stor, lite oljig kropp. Sött, tungt, lite lätt boozigt, malttungt, lite lätt rostade toner som bryter av, övermogen frukt, tung toffee.
3.5 This beer needs barrel aging. Brown color with tan head. Aroma is raisins, bread, caramel, and prune. Taste is just a lot of raisin with moderate sweetness for the high abv. Tough to drink a lot of but still decent.
3.7 Deep plummy copper hue under a thin light tan head. Rich lightly boozy dark malty English aroma with some date and fig in there. Smooth and dark flavor that’s got that old English malty boozy touch to it, a light hint of date and fig, and a warm semisweet malty finish. A bit simplistic and has a lasting alcohol phenolic finish.
5.0 Aspetto: mogano scuro e limpido. Schiuma marroncina, abbondante, fine e abbastanza persistente. A Roma: intenso, chiari sentori liquorosi, caramellati e legnosi. Gusto: decisi sentori liquorosi e di Passito, abbondante e caramello, legnoso, abbondanti frutta secca e frutta a guscio. Corpo decisamente strutturato. Carbonizzazione medio bassa. Birra veramente fenomenale!!!
