AleSmith Speedway Stout - Barrel-Aged Kopi Luwak

AleSmith Speedway Stout - Barrel-Aged Kopi Luwak

Barrel Aged Kopi Luwak Speedway Stout is our award winning year round Speedway Stout with Kopi Luwak Coffee that has been matured in premium bourbon barrels. Considered one of the world’s most expensive and rare coffee varieties, the beans are specifically selected for their ripeness and quality by the civet, a small jungle marsupial that feeds of the fruit of the coffee cherry. Good to the last dropping!

4.4 Finally ticking this! Bottle @ Himmeriget, Copenhagen. Pours pitch black with a small mocha head. Aromas of vanilla, fudge, light tobacco, dark bitter chocolate, malty, subtle roasted coffee in the back. Taste is pretty fudgey, vanilla, thick barrel character, malty, roasty, coffee, light ashy, dark bitter chocolate.
4.4 February 13, 2016. Bottle. Black with a small creamy brown head. Aroma is smooth coffee, bourbon, vanilla, toasted coconut, notes of dark chocolate, caramel, dark chocolate. Taste is light to medium sweet, soft roasted bitterness. Finish is sweet caramel, bourbon, vanilla, roasted coffee, hints of bitter dark chocolate. Medium to full bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Very good, nice BA character.
4.3 Pours black with a light brown head. Aroma; Vanilla, coconut, roasted coffee, roasted malt, bourbon, cocoa and some alcohol in the end. Flavours; Vanilla, bourbon, coconut, roasted coffee, liqourice and cocoa.
4.4 A: Pitch black with a nice brown head that fades away N: Vanilla, green peppers, roasted coconut T: Vanilla, coffee, roasted coconut, bourbon O: Very nice barrels to it! Lovely balanced!
4.2 Bottle, courtesy of PotjeBier. Aroma of bourbon vanilla and nice smooth coffee. Rich flavor of thick vanilla, coffee, mild cherry, licorice, choco and a long lingering finish. I really like the combination of kopi and bourbon. Thanks for this awesome bottle!
4.1 75 cl (from an IP trade with richiesd) @ home, shared with borresteijn, MarcodL & caesar. Black color. Beige head, just a little. Aroma’s: alcohol, a bit paint thinner/aceton at first, a bit weird smell (erm...), that you get with Kopi Luwak beers. Later there’s more sweetness, bourbon, vanilla and the pain thinner disappears (fortunately). Flavor is sweet. Strong alcohol feel. Medium to full bodied. Long lingering finish.
4.3 Bottle thanks to Potjebier, medium sample. Dark color, medium brown frothy head. Aroma of roasted malts, some caramel and vanilla sweetness, bourbon, cookie, biscuit, slight booze. Not a lot of coffee, hardly noticeable. Medium sweetness in taste, cookie and biscuit from bourbon, vanilla, slight boozy. Again, not much coffee, which can be expected as kopi lowak is quite delicate and therefore nonsense to brew with in such a heavy flavored beer. Its basically similar to a regular bourbon speedway, which is by itself absolutely fantastic. No need to add delicate coffee, so therefore it scores a couple of tenths less for me than just the bourbon speedway. Still highly enjoyable ofcourse and wonderfully balanced.
4.1 75cl Bottle shared, thanks for tonight’s beers Potje! Black colour, beige head. Aroma of bourbon, sweet soft coffee, treacle, toasted coconut, vanilla, quite sweet, roasted malts, liqueur bon-bons. Flavour is sweet, roasted malts, bourbon, light soft sweet coffee, vanilla, bon-bons, bitter finish. Medium to full bodied, smooth. Good.
4.7 Goes back to comments I made regarding Speedway Stout BA variants, most of them turn out to be pretty good with this one no exception. Smells and looks like the perfect stout. Taste unique with the richness of the Kopi coffee added to the boil. Overall one of the better variants and one I have an extra bottle of I won during an event. Look forward to having again in the near future.
4.6 Pitch black and opaque with a 1.5 finger dark beige head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Great retention for the style and high ABV with streaks of soapy lacing left behing. Aroma is outrageous with tons of gourmet coffe roast holding up underneath the strong barrel presence. Dry toasted oak with amazing spicy bourbon character, coconut and vanilla bean. Still plenty of robust coffee, dark chocolate and oatmeal followed by dessert-like sweet malts, chocolate cake, baker’s chocolate and fudge. Perfect barrel integration with lots of coffee still coming through. Full bodied and viscous with a strong, spicy bourbon barrel presence that’s countered by robust, deeply roasted coffee flavor and dark and silky sweet malt notes. Barrel character is strong up front with dry oak complimeted by spicy sweet bourbon, vanilla bean and toasted coconut. Decent alcohol flavor but not hot or boozy at all. The coffee realy comes through with robust roast and gourmet espresso followed by burnt malt and sugars, oatmeal and dark chocolate. Slightly grainy with flour less chocolate cake, baker’s chocolate, toffee and caramel sweetness. Very smooth and well balanced with a delicate, nicely integrated barrel character and excellent Kopi coffee flavor. Incredibly complex and surprisingly easy to drink considering the high ABV with lots of oak, bourbon, robust coffee, burnt malt and silky chocolate sweetness. Excellent!
4.3 Speedway is one of the marvels of the stout world. It's darkness threatens a more bitter, breakfast stout-like taste, but it delivers a smooth, full-bodies taste with just the right amounts of everything, especially the coffee. At the end of the palette lies just a hint of vanilla, it's signature. There's only one Speedway Stout and it's always a good choice.
4.7 750' mL bottle shared with ebone1988 for his 500th rating, because I'm pretty badass. The pour is a viscous oily black with a medium brown ring of head and no lace. The aroma is great. There is a beautiful malt, coffee, chocolate, and barrel. The bourbon really comes through, to a point of being boozy. There is also a resounding vanilla that carries out the back end. A definite green wood is apparent from the barrel. The flavor is really nice. The coffee really comes through, without being overpowering. The chocolate is really heavy, but not dominating. Again there is a distinct green oak input, but the vanilla and roast are great. It's just really well balanced and nice. The mouth feel is thick and creamy, maybe a little chewy, with a soft, velvety carbonation and a lingeringly roasty coffee vanilla finish. It's so smooth and delicious
4.7 #500. Bottle shared with koleminer20, because he’s fucking awesome. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, barrel, coffee, roasted malt. Appearance is black, light brown head, thick. Taste is incredible, bourbon barrel, vanilla, heat, then sweet malt, licorice, and coffee. Mouthfeel is velvet, wonderfully thick, rich, perfect carbonation, wow. Overall, this is a wonderful choice for #500.
3.8 Bottle at home. Pours pitch black with a soapy dark beige head that disappears quickly. Aroma of green coffee beans a hint of green paprica and subtle vanilla bourbon. Medium body, alcohol burn but nice bitterness towards the end... with a solif sugary film. Taste is dark vanila chocolate, burnt malts, caramel and thick mocca coffee. Nice beer, but a tad overrated in my honest opinion.
4.5 Originally reviewed 4/23/2013. 750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Jet black with a nice khaki head. Chunky bubbles. Thick collar. A few wisps on the surface. Smell of lots of bourbon. Intense bourbon. A touch of coffee, but it’s overpowered by the barrel. Chocolate back there too. Really intense bourbon flavor too. Covers the coffee initially. The chocolate from the stout comes through here. The coffee is mostly prevalent in the back end here. Thick and chewy. No heat, but there’s a lot of bourbon to it. Medium carbonation. Excellent beer. Intense bourbon, masks the coffee, but makes up for it in deliciousness.
4.4 Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Inky black with a deep rising Mocha head. Nice cocoa swirl of foam that fades to clinging lace with thick legs. Aromas of wafting bourbon, oak, vanilla, dark fruits, milk chocolate and cold pressed coffee. Velvety, creamy mouthfeel gives espresso notes, latte, cocoa and vanilla that meld into a deep note of dark fruit and bourbon before bitter bakers chocolate, fudge, bitter coffee and an alcohol note solidify the finish. Very smooth warming bourbon notes linger with the Kopi. Very nice.
4.0 Bottle shared as part of a full bottled speedway vertical by Ben at his 40th birthday. Thanks for sharing all the killer beers! Drinking all of these side-by-side while becoming increasingly intoxicated drives home a few points. (1) they all pretty much taste the same -- I mean, the bourbon barrel versions are a little smoother with more bourbon/vanilla with the coffee in the background, but with the exception of regular Vietnamese I couldn’t telly you which of the many variants I was drinking without looking closely at the bottle. (2) that’s fine, though, because they’re all pretty tasty.
4.2 Shared with the crew @ Brickstore. Always nice when one can drink a top 50 beer, and it certainly was in my top 50. The coffee has faded or mellowed (or maybe that is the affect of it going through an animal’s digestive system). The base beer was complimented extemely well by the barrel with loads of chocolate and bourbon and vanilla with the mellow coffee. Just super nice.
4.3 Bottle shared with the crew. Big flavors here, vanilla, bit of wood, light coffee, bittersweet roasty malt. The coffee at this point seems a little faded and is only very faint far back on the palate. Smooth from start to finish. Bit of bourbon sweetness and a light alcohol bite on the back end. A lot going on but all working together really well in typical Alesmith Speedway fashion.
4.6 750 ml bottle poured into a snifter. Black with a foamy tan head. Aroma of rich coffee, bourbon, oak, bitter dark chocolate. Taste is mildly bitter and sweet. Rich and smooth mouthfeel that coats the tongue. Top notch!
4.6 Bottle at speedway tasting. Shared with 2 friends. Dark black pour with a small tanned head. Dark roasted coffee, sweet dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, deep dark fruits, red forest fruits, oak, vanilla, less roasted nuts compared to the ba Vietnamese. Less heat and spicy notes. Still Some alcohol burn. Hard to say wich one i like better. But i miss the roasted nuts in this one. But from the other Side i like this one better because there is less heat. Call it a draw
4.0 Thanks _angst_ for the trade here! Black with nice big dark foam head. Aroma is very subtle to the point of void - touch of dark malt. Taste is similar to bourbon barrel aged speedway but more subtle - tannins, oak, dark malt, then marshmallow as it warms (nice toasty quality here). Far from thin on the palate but not as full as straight up speedway. Overall, very nice but not great. Glad to have tried it though.
4.4 Bottle, thanks to Baggio. Bourbon, coffee aroma. Chocolate cake, coffee, bourbon, near full bodied. Rich with a long pleasant finish. Tasty brew.
3.5 1 pt 9,4 fl oz bottle thanks to Dunbar72! Sampled on March 7, 2015. Very dark brown to black color, dark brown head. Sweet, alcohol, coffee, green bell peppers scent. Coffee, alcohol, spicy, fruity taste. Chocolate, coffee aftertaste. Fizzy mouthfeel, medium bitterness. Dry finish.
4.2 Backlogged rating from RBSG 2014, many thanks to whom brought this, sorry I did not write it down: Anyway, deep near opaque hue with a short lasting head and minimal lace, nice oily tears. The coffee and bourbon work cohesively to bomb your face and palate. Vanilla, char, roast, bourbon and a hint of mocha to the rescue. The mouth feel is utterly smooth with just a bit of an ashy finish. Dangerously drinkable. This is SO MUCH BETTER than the non barreled Kopi Luwak version, no herbal or veggie notes here. This one is worthy of the hype!
4.4 Sampled during RBSG. From notes. Coffee, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla and oak.
4.2 From a 75 cl bottle, courtesy of _angst_. Black with beige head. Chocolate, coffee roasted malt aroma, slightly boozy. Very welll integrated bourbon and vanila notes Full bodied, low to medium carbonation. Dry with slightly salty bitterness, a tad wood astringent.
4.6 Bottle courtesy of rlgk. Pours black with a mocha head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, charred wood, dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, chocolate covered cherries, bourbon alcohol and soil. Taste is sweet, tiny bitter and malty with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, charred wood, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, roasted coconut, moist soil, bourbon alcohol and hints of banana bread. Mouthfeel is soft, round, velvety, slightly boozy, tiny astringent and near full bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, roasted coconut, dark chocolate, moist soil and hints of bourbon alcohol. Great balance between the barrel and base beer. Really damn tasty!
4.6 (Bottle) pours black with a brown head. The aroma holds bourbon up front with coffee and dark chocolate. Ones again, not that complex but perfect balance and the yummy factor is maximal. The flavour is near medium sweet, medium bitter and tiny acidic. Bourbon, wood, vanilla, coconut, coffee, chocolate, fruits and balanced hops. The mouthfeel is soccer, valvety and smooth with a light carbonation. Complex, lingering finish. Near full bodied.
3.7 750ml bottle shared by jsprime. big black beer. bourbon and coffee with the base beer just supporting. bordering on over the top but not quite there.
