AleSmith Speedway Stout - Thai

AleSmith Speedway Stout - Thai

Russian Imperial Stout with Coconut, Lime, Ginger, Lemongrass, Basil, & Coffee.
Inspired by our brewers’ love of the assertive, bright flavors of Thai ingredients, this intensely flavored brew incorporates the vibrant quality of several Thai-inspired ingredients into our classic imperial stout. Powerful notes of citrus, botanicals, and tropical fruit balance the stout’s rich chocolate, caramel, and coffee character. The result is an amazingly flavorful and complex beer that pays tribute to the flavors of Thailand.

4.3 Pitch black in color, light beige head... Aroma of lemongrass, coconut, cocoa, lime, lots of floral notes on nose... Flavor is dark cocoa, lime, coconut, lots of citrusy notes... light cocoa, citrus... delicious
4.4 A smooth, dry style that shows elements of mocha underneath curry paste and black fruit notes. Smooth and relatively lacking heat. Some strange wet cucumber and earthy lemongrass notes add intrigue.
4.0 On tap. Black colour with beige head. Coconut, roasted and chocolate aroma. Roasted, sweet, coconut, chocolate taste. Medium to full body.
4.0 Aroma: thai basil, malt, Mocha App: sheet lacing, tan head, pitch black Flavour: obvious Thai spices that blend beautifully
4.0 75cl Bottle @ Boxbeers.com, Copenhagen, Denmark. Black colour with a medium size tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, coconut, spices. Taste is roasted malt, coffee, coconut, licorice, lime, ginger, basil. Full body, soft carbonation.
4.1 Bottle sample at a tasting at Tom L's place. Thanks zvikar. Black with a brown head. Lemongrass, cocoa nibs, olives, ash, faint smoke in the nose, lemongrass, bitterness, cilantro, cocoa and a little bit of smoke in the mouth. Full body, lemongrass finish, a little ashy.
4.0 Thai-themed version of AleSmith's legendary Speedway Stout, 75 cl bottle shared with Craftmember, Goedele and Hinke. Creamy, pale yellowish beige, papery-lacing but quickly thinning and opening head over a black beer with hazy mahogany edges. Very spicy and intriguing aroma: dry ginger, bitter cocoa, camphor, nutmeg, lime peel, soy sauce, dried out lemongrass, almond, pecan nut but not so much coconut, whisky, black chocolate, coffee cream, Thai basil, green matcha tea, banana peel, mocha ice cream, vanilla beans. Sweet onset, candied dates and a touch of raisin but nothing cloying, light sourish edge from the lime as well as a light soy sauce-like umami effect, soft carb, full and oily body. Very thick pecan-nutty and black-chocolatey malt base drenched in aromatic spiciness, quite perfumey and with the lime and lemongrass components adding some refreshment; complex spicy finish with a lot of heating, whisky-like alcohol while black chocolate and nuttiness linger, coconut meanwhile remaining a bit understated; ginger and bitter cocoa prevail, with the Thai basil adding a subtle sweetishness in the end. A bit of a challenge, this one, intense with a lot of bold flavours bravely fighting each other for dominance; took a while to get used to, but this combo is in any case highly fascinating and interesting. Some of the flavours, most notably the coconut and even the coffee, remain relatively weak whereas others attract full attention; I was left wondering if this mishmash of flavours is really flattering to the familiar basic beer, but I had no problems enjoying the entire glass. One to revisit, if it weren't so expensive...
4.2 750ml bottle. Jet black colour with average to huge, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, tan head. Spicy, Tom Kha Gai-like aroma, notes of lemongrass, ginger, lime, a touch of coconut, widely disguised, dark malty background. Taste is sweet-ish, dark malty and citrusy spicy, notes of lemongrass, lime, some mocha, coconut overtones. Creamy texture, smooth, soft and silky palate, fine carbonation. Clean, well balanced, harmonious, not overpiced, quite refreshing due to the citrusy flavours, well hidden alcohol. Very good!
4.2 4oz at Cappy's for the Speedway event on 11/29/18. Darkest brown pour with a thick light brown head. Aroma of malt, ginger and spices. Malt, chocolate and ginger flavor giving way to roasty coffee before a spiced finish.
2.8 Creamy tan head. Lemongrass/roasty nose and palate.Strong alcohol heat. Thinner than expected. Coffee notes
4.2 Pours black with a dark tan head. Nose shows coconut, basil, ginger, roasted malt, soft coffee and lime. Flavours include more ginger, coconut, coffee, heavy roast, liquorice and a fair whack of sweetness.
3.1 Bottle shared at a tasting at Tom L's place. Black, tan foam. Coffee, roast, ginger, lemongrass, lime, sweet, slightly sourish, caramel, chocolate, full-bodied. Kinda weird.
3.6 At Tom's Place, pours black with a beige head, aroma of green kurry, chocolate, flavor of chocolate green kurry, caramel, toffee, medium bodied
3.9 From tap at the Hoppy pub. Black color with beige brown head. Malty aroma, roasted, spicy, herbal, lime, chocolate, light coffee. Sweet and bitter spicy taste like aroma. Medium to full silky oily body with soft carbonation.
4.1 Share bottle at Brewski. Pours near black with dark tan head. Quite a departure from the original: the lime & lemongrass seem to morph into a juicy orange and there is a spicy undercurrent from from the ginger & basil. I didn't pick up as much coffee or coconut up front. Still v. interesting & tasty
4.3 Bottle. Jet black with small, tan and not very solid head. Very strong and complex mix of chocolate, coffee cocoa and ginger aromas with some light roasted tones in the background. Full body, sweet start, alcohol perfectly hidden and a bit sour, roasted finish. Absolutely perfect!
4.3 Barwa czarna, piana beżowa. W aromacie mocno imbirowe, trawa cytrynowa, dobrej jakości kawa i kokos. Bardzo gęste, słodkie. Ponownie kawa i imbir, przyjemnie przyprawowe. Świetne.
3.8 Tap at Beertemple. Black with creamy tan head. Big sweet roasty chocolate and caramel malts, ginger, lemongrass, massive spices on top of sweet black goop. Big sweet, strong spices but not spicy, strong roasty bitter. Full crramy body and soft carbonation.
4.0 Tap at BeerTemple. Black with dark brown head. Lots of chocolate, lemon grass, Thai basil, ginger, coconut, coffee, dark sugary notes, massive Thai curry in a chocolate? Quite sweet and medium bitter. Full sugary body.
4.1 On tap at Beer Temple in Amsterdam, with markoijelena. Best beer of the tour! Black pour with gassy ivory foam. Nose: ginger blast, it really talks to gin, roast is superbly round and clean. Mouthfeel: just AMAZING! Great chocolate roast, ginger, anice. TOP!
4.2 Tap @ Mikkeller bar, Warsaw May 2018. Black body with a small brown head. Aroma has dark roasted malt, coffee, coconut, ginger and lemongrass. Flavor is like the ordinary Speedway, smooth bold, dark roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, god bitterness and warming alcohol but in addition coconut, lemongrass and ginger and this works out great. Fine body and long lasting smooth aftertaste. This is simply the great flavors of Speedway in combination with thai food flavors. Fun and nice.
4.2 Bottleshare, Bitter Phew, Sydney. Pours a jet black with a tan head. Aroma: roasted malt, chilli, lime, mild basil notes. Taste: roasted malt, chilli, lime, lemon, toasted grain, mild bitter cocoa, mild basil and coriander flavours. Medium bodied. Moderate bitterness with a boozy finish. Complex flavour balance. Easy drinking and quite enjoyable. Will happily drink this again!
4.0 barwa czarna, piana beżowa. Aromat średnio-intensywny, dominuje imbir i trawa cytrynowa, w tle gorzka czekolada i dużo nut palonych. W smaku pełne, lekko słodkie, dużo czekolady, gorzkiego kakao i nut popiołowych, dodatki wyczuwalne, kojarzące się z tajskimi daniami (imbir, kokos, trawa cytrynowa, limonka).
4.3 Tap. Black color, creamy foam. Aroma: coffee and spicies, cinnamon, nutmeg, caramel, pepper, ginger, sweet spiced liqueur. Taste: sweetish, spicy, caramel, coffee, wine, cinnamon, spice-cakes, ginger, chocolate, brandy, very warming.
4.2 Very floral on the nose, heavy lemongrass and ginger. It all comes together in the taste, balancing out the bitterness of the base SS, even making it a bit sweet. When you do as many variants as alesmith does, you gotta make some of them really out there. This accomplished that feat
3.6 World Cup Beer and Ball in Odense. Black with a lasting off-white head. Strange perfumed aroma with herbal, spicy and floral notes, along with licorice and coffee. Sweet roasted and spicy flavour with a great mouthfeel.
3.9 Bottle @ Ratebeer World Cup Night, Oluf Bagers Gade, 2018. Pours Black with a creamy head. Roasted and Sweet nose and flavor. A Bit of ginger, ,lime and herbs beneath a Good layer of Roast and coffee. Smooth and Full bodied with the spices lingering.
