Allagash Black

Allagash Black

Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique.

3.6 Color is cola, with a thin tan head. Aroma of raisin and burnt malts. Flavor is sweet milkiness with bitter chocolate and raisin. Smooth, with a hint of tartness. Dry, bitter aftertaste. Aftertaste is significant. Normally I'm not a huge fan of dry, bitter aftertaste in stouts, but it works well here.
3.4 12 oz bottle on 5th Jan 2018, poured into a lovely Kasteel glass at my daughters in California. Sediment was allowed to leave the bottle, so I got really dark bodied beer, slight haze overall, but still looked good, sadly the beige/lightly tanned head soon turned into a thin wisp and collar. Malts rule the roost here, chocolate and liquorice in both the nose and taste. Had a few Belgian Stouts over the years, found them very sweet, thin bodied and very un-Belgian usually(meaning uninteresting and boring), not too sure what makes this a 'Belgian style Stout' because it isn't sweet, thin or boring!
3.8 Sample at the "Black Friday 03" tasting on 11/24/2017. Dark brown color with a medium tan head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Partial rings of lace. Aroma of dark chocolate, malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of bittersweet chocolate, roast malt and earthy hops. The finish is chocolatey with a malty aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
3.5 12 oz bottle 4th Beer of the Christmas beers The beer poured a opaque black with a small tan head and lacing. The aroma of roasted malt, dried fruits and licorice greets you. The taste hase chocolate, coffee and roasted malt and licorice being more dominate. The beer has a light body with soft carbonation. Nice clean finish. The belgian yeast never had agreed with me. I am not a good judge of this style of beer.
3.6 this one pours a brown black with a glint of gold and a thin head. the aroma is belgo yeast, a touch of smoke, and a bir of malt. The taste is likewise strains of Belgian yeast, a bit of heavy syrupy malt, and some stouty smoke darkness to keep it going. Good for a rainy Sunday with your boo boo a cooking up something spicy in the kitchen!!!!
3.6 Served on draft. Slight head with a dark tone. Immediate malt taste of smoke and butterscotch. Aftertaste is where the Belgian yeast kicks in. A highly drinkable, flavorful ale. Enjoy with a friend on a cool fall evening.
1.5 Draft at Bar Harbor Beerworks in Bar Harbor, Maine. This is a stout? Too much of a Belgian yeast flavor that I don't like.
3.8 Bottle (12oz). Strong smokey and coffee tasting stout. Maybe a little chocolate. Medium carbonation. (update 10/22/17: was 3.6, now 3.8) Been enjoying this a lot lately.
3.8 Dégustée au Mondial de la Bière de Montréal 2010 (De mes notes papiers). .
3.8 On tap. Malty raisin aroma. Chocolate, raisin, toffee, and other sweet treats in the taste with a decent bitter bite. Solid.
3.6 12 oz single bottle from Total Wine & More - Laguna Hills. Deep reddish brown colored and clear in appearance with a tan head. Aroma of flavor of black licorice, fruity esters, molasses, light chocolate and hints of candy sugar, coffee and Belgian yeast. A little intense at first, but much better as it warms. An interesting stout overall.
3.9 LCI. Uit de fles geschonken. Heerlijke Belgium-style stout: gerookte mout, koffie en hop, licht rokerig. Prima stout/dark ale
3.8 12oz bottle. Very dark brown, beige head reduces to a thin collar. Enticing aroma of fresh roasted coffee, hints of cocoa. Flavors start with coffe then become more chocolate toward the medium, warming finish.
3.6 12 oz bottle. Pours brown with tall, creamy, beige head, nice lacing and lovely carbonation. Aroma is of herbal hops, toasted malt and coffee. Body is medium and slightly crisp. Taste is of toasted malt, coffee, chocolate, dark fruit and herbal hops. Finish is long and bittersweet. Overall good brew.
4.0 Growler from Monroe Super Buy Rite in Englishtown, NJ. Translucent cola brown color is topped by a large frothy tan head. Faint roasted malt nose hints at ash and charcoal. First sip yields sweet roasted malt flavor that touches on coffee and chocolate. Picking up notes of dark candi sugar, cocoa, tobacco, raisins, burnt wood and magnolia leaves. Yeasty, smoky, Belgian funky yeasty notes in finish. Sweet, dark and intriguing. Delicious and soulful.
3.7 Lovely ebony black stout. Silky on the tongue, notes of smoke, coffee, sweet chocolate and caramel. One of the sweeter stouts I?ve had. Overall, it?s good, with everything I enjoy about a good, black stout. From a bottle gifted by a friend. I?ll pick it up when I see it again.
3.1 The beer has weak aroma. The yeast taste is buried behind dark chocolate malt which is pretty harsh. The flavor is quite complex and it is interesting. I am just not sold on it.
3.6 Light roasted smell...Almost no smell...Taste is much more bold....And good sweetness...Warming smooth malt...Light roastiness...Medium complexity...Good mouthfeel
3.4 November 25th, 2014 - Allagash Black is black, front to back, though the the foam wasn’t really stacked. With a sniff, the beer I attacked, rich with charcoal and wet stone, backed with a little chicory too. The flavor was packed with alcohol and light raisins, though lacked a heavier palate. Instead the carbonation was jacked, almost rough on the aftertaste.
3.7 A Stout which makes in the sweetness, share round by roasted, with notes of licorice, dark chocolate and toast. Bitter is on the roasted coated by earthy and grassy hop. Silky texture and long and roasted finale with grape and a touch of sweetness.
3.7 Guess I never had this so grabbed a bottle probably a tad old. Browner pour. Nose is burnt coffee. Taste of roasted malt, chocolate, cofffee ground, earthy, prunes, licorice. Creamy mouthfeel little burnt toast on finish.
3.4 12oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a tiny beige head. Aroma is somewhat metallic, yeasty, and with a little coffee coming through as it warms. Taste is molasses, chocolate, some coffee, a little dark fruit, a hint of toffee, and a good amount of yeast. A touch of pepper. Lightly roasty with a bitter hop finish. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. A little watery but a pleasingly oil mouthfeel overall.
3.4 Room-filling aromas of yeast malt and licorice. Pours a deep black brown with a thin tan head. Big flavors of sweet coffee and chalk well balanced. Mild carbonation with an oily mouthfeel. Complex with a nice distinctive style. Very good.
3.7 Bottle from the brewery. This is a very complex beer -- it’s got some similarities to a Dubbel, with a raisin bread sweetness that reminds me of some of the best Belgian dubbels, but it also has a roasted malt character that reminds me of Guinness. Fruit esters from the yeast, before it finishes quick and clean. It’s almost like someone brewed a stout with berries...
4.0 I poured it from the bottle into a glass. It pours dark brown with a fluffy, beige head and lacing. The aroma is roasted coffee and dark fruit. The taste is coffee, raisin, some chocolate, and spice. There’s less chocolate than advertised. I don’t mean that as a bad thing though. It’s really smooth and nicely balanced. I like the Belgian twist to this. It sets it apart.
3.8 Bottle from New Beer Distributors, Manhattan, New York, USA. A black coloured pour with a healthy off white/beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate aroma. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, chocolate, hint of coffee. Lovely stout from Maine.
3.5 Appearance: Bottled 5/7-2015. Dark brown, almost black. Good amount of light tan head. Aroma: Dark malt, roasted. Slight coffee. Taste: Dark malt, roasted, slightly burnt. Some burnt bitterness. Bought: Drinks of the World (Online), 355 ml, CHF 7.50 Info: 10/9-2016, BB: 30/11-2016 (according to importer)
4.0 Tap pour at Blaze in Bar Harbor, ME. Pint glass. Black with nearly tan head. Half finger. Aroma of dark fruit blended with roasted nuttiness. Hints of smoke and chocolate as well. Taste reminds me of a Belgian dubbel combining forces with a traditional stout. There is a definite tart, Belgian raisin and plum influence. Dark chocolate bitterness comes in at the end. Assertive aftertaste that lingers. Very enjoyable beer. Bet on black.
3.7 Joint oUT of my comfort zone with a Belgian, but pretty good without the sweet Belgian flavor.
Bonne Biere
