Allagash Grand Cru

Allagash Grand Cru

Allagash Grand Cru is deep golden in color, and has a firm yet refined malty palate. Taste and aroma have suggestions of smoke and licorice, with subtle hints of fruit and spice. An excellent beer to enjoy during the cooler seasons.

3.3 Draught. Pours a clear amber color with a small head. Nose has some dark fruit elements to it with just a hint of orange. Taste seems a little dry at first, but ends up a slightly bitter with just a hint of sweetness.
4.1 Draft at Khyber Pass. Deep gold pour. Started with a large fluffy head that left some runny lace. Spicy caramel flavors. Black tea. Orange pith. Clear candy toys. Agave. Apricot ears. Sassafras. Bitter chardonnay. Sugarcane. Lemongrass. Peppercorns. Rich vanilla caramel. Well blended. Good mouthfeel. Vinous and juicy but very dry. Feels like a sharp spicy Trippel.
3.8 Draft at craft ale house. Pours hazy copper with a big white head. The aroma has some spice, some funky yeast, lemon. The taste is slightly tart at first followed by some sweet fruit, sugary finish with some light smoke.
3.5 Deep golden/amber pour thin white head ... aroma of sweet caramel malts, light fruity yeast and light orange .... taste is of grainy and caramel malts, spicy, floral and light citrusy orange hops and light candi sugar .... finishes dry malty and lightly sugar .... light bite in the finish as well .... abv hidden well
3.7 Batch 20. I don’t have a date, but I believe the bottle is at least approaching two years old. The beer pours a hazy brownish-red color with a white head. The aroma has a ton of brown sugar and dark fruit, as well as some caramel and toffee. There is also a little spice and some alcohol. The flavor has a ton of toffee and caramel, as well as some cherries and grapes. There is a bit of pepper, as well as some alcohol and candy sugar. The carbonation is fairly light and the beer is soft on the palate. The age has definitely not hurt the beer, although I can’t say if it improved it.
3.9 Poured from a 750 mL caged and corked bottle into a snifter. Batch 119. My pour is a dirty, hazy amber color with a bubbly off-white head that leaves a bit of lace on the glass. The aroma has a nice spiciness to it, I imagine from the Belgian yeast strain and the combination of spices added. Nutmeg, coriander, and a bit of cinnamon are all present, working nicely with a sweet, yeasty, and bready malt character. Some candied green apples, red apples, and plums are also noticeable. The flavor starts on a fairly sweet note, with a nice caramel malt presence. Up front I am also reminded of baked bread, with a strong spicy yeast presence. Some dark orchard fruits, mainly red apple, plum, and cherries add a subdued fruit note. Toward the end the spices come through more fully, with nutmeg, coriander, cinnamon, and a bit of pepper all noticeable. As the sip finishes, it dries out a little bit, with a slightly tart green apple note. At first the body feels full, with a bubbly carbonation and a sweet taste. As the taste progresses, however, it becomes more on the dry side, with the ghost remnants of whatever hops were here originally. The body lightens up, and the carbonation moves from bubbly (maybe overly so), to a bit more creamy. I have been hanging onto this bottle for a while, so it is obviously lacking any hop presence whatsoever, but I found it to be rather enjoyable. I would definitely drink this again.
3.3 Golden-amber pour with almost no head. Caramel malt and licorice aroma with some spices too. Taste is mostly sweet malt which turns into a wintertime spicy and licorice finish. Pretty good but I've never been a big fan of grand crus.
3.6 Pours a light brown color with a small tan head. Aroma of citrus and yeast. Taste of caramel, orange peel, candy and belgian yeast. Easy drinkability and moderate body.
3.6 Pours a slightly hazy golden orange color with cream color head and decent lacing. Aroam of dried fruit and yeast. Taste was sweet maltiness along with fruites and yeast. Medium bodied and easy drinkability.
3.2 Malt and molasses dominant this beer. Balanced with a sweetness and softness that make this a pleasant beer. However not spectacular for a beer in NZ which in absurdly expensive.
3.6 Hazy amber color with a thin head. Fruity aromas, orange, cherry, and lemon. Taste starts with a large malt that gives up its sweetness and fades back to the citrus tones. Full bodied.
3.3 Draught@Rattle’n’Hum Slightly hazy yellow color, medium-sized steady white head, lace. Spicey, mango fruity aroma, a bit sticky. Medium-bodied. Fruity, slightly tart Belgian yeasty, light peppery notes, coriander. Typical American version of Belgian strong ale.
4.1 750 ml bottle into chalice, batch 19(probably a few years old). Pours a hazy reddish orange color with a nice foamy 1 finger off white head with great retention that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some spotty lacing on the glass, with nice carbonation streaming up. Aromas of big prune, golden raisin, pepper, coriander, clove, caramel, candi sugar, and spicy yeast. Nice and well balanced aromas with good strength. Taste of big caramel, prune, raisin, apple, pepper, molasses, biscuit, clove, roasted nut, candi sugar, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of caramel, dark fruit, molasses, biscuit, and yeast spices on the finish for a bit. Great balance of flavors with the spiciness. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a slightly creamy and slick mouthfeel. Drinks really smoothly despite the slightly prickly carbonation. Alcohol is nicely hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Quadrupel style offering from Allagash. Great balance of flavors with a high amount of complexity; and is super smooth to drink as well given the 7.2%.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a hazy orange with a lasting orange tinged head. Aroma is sweet and spicy. Flavor is sweet (almost too sweet) with notes of orange, malts and spices. Decent but too sweet and too much coriander for me.
3.3 pint at Tyler’s Apex, though it may have been a tulip, I didn’t note it. 6/25/11. Good aroma, sweet, spice. orange, apple, coriander, clove. Orange color, small to no head, no lace. Bitter flavor, Medium body, smooth creamy oily mouthffel, dry spiced finish. Tasty, flavor best part, stayed solid the whole way through, very enjoyable,
4.1 Draft at Paradiso Dupont, as Super Cru. Clear deep golden color. Aroma of light pepper. Taste is sour grapefruit and pepper. Very nice.
3.6 Spicy malt, yeasty aroma. Clear copper with a frothy white lively head. Smooth slick texture. Strong malt, fruity with caramel flavour. Bitter finish.
3.7 A wheaty, sweet, yeasty brew that sips like a fine cider. Quick notes of orange jam are followed by parade of flavors, as apples, lemons, honeybuns, cinnamon, and brown sugar all flow by. The finish is mildly dry, but mainly spicy and festive. Looks kinda ugly, and the nose ain’t much, but the taste makes everything okay. (3/30/09)
3.6 Bottle consumed in my hotel room in Boston, Mass last October. Dark golden coloured pour with a medium off white head. Typical Belgian sweet/spice aroma. Tastes quite sweet, yeasty, fruity, caramel, spice. Typical American Belgian clone but still very good and rather drinkable.
3.9 Aroma has a nutty maltiness with spice notes. Reminds me a bit of a triple but lighter. Smooth taste with the spice notes more apparent. Really a lovely beer especially on tap.
3.8 Draft at fireworks pizza leesburg VA, I enjoyed it, not bitter, nutty, cludy golden color. Mildly spicy on the palette.
3.7 Aroma is that of a darker belgian triple. The appearance is a darker golden color with light carbonation. Taste is very similar to the aroma, however there are spices that linger on the tongue firmly after the swallow. Decent beer, however: it is not worth buying again in my mind.
3.2 Draft. Golden color. Spicy nose with little head. Not a bad strong golden. Very spicy. Good carbonation. Belgian candy comes through nicely
3.4 750ml bottle from Winooski. Appearance : Hazy amber with a small head. Aroma : Fruits and spices. Some brown sugar. Taste : Fruity and spicy with brown sugar. Some belgian yeast too. Dry finish. Overall : Nice belgian yeast. Not really my thing. Too spicy. Well made but not my thing at all.
4.1 Aroma of citrus and lemon peel. It poured a cloudy brownish color with great head retention and lacing. Sweet taste with notes of clove, basement aromas, and a nice spice finish. Excellent lingering taste on the palate. Overall this is a damn good beer, and you should go and drink this immediately.
3.6 Tap at Mugs. Poured an apricot amber. Nose is caramel with hints of fruit and Belgian yeast. Lots of caramel , sweet , with hints of coriander. Butterscotch. Sweet and bold finish.
3.8 750 ml batch 20. Pours an unclear deep amber brown with a small creamy off white head. Aroma is sweet cereal and candied nuts, dark fruitiness, and some definite spiciness. Flavor is a bit spicier, a nice dark overripe fruit note and just a bit of tartness. Finishes smooth and creamy with a nice mild bitterness. Medium lightly sticky body with a soft carbonation. Nice grand cru
3.4 This is not the best offering from Allagash. it is still good however. Just not their best
3.7 750ml Batch 20. Pours a slightly hazy copper. Sweet malty aroma with a raisin-y undertone.Nice smooth medium body. Nice mild tartness (theanks FunkyBrewster) with a sweet candied finish. Pleasant fo sho.
2.7 Pours a deep hazy golden-amber color, nose is like a bag of rotten potpouri, taste is super boozy, well too overcarbonated, grab bag of spices, anise, pepper, dark candy sugar, just not my taste at all.
