Allagash Hugh Malone

Allagash Hugh Malone

The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

3.7 Pours hazy yellow with a rocky white head. Aroma is light citrus hop. Very drinkable, with zesty carbonation and notes of pilsner malt.
3.8 Bottle from a Lazy dog. Pours a hazy deep yellow color with a good sized frothy white head. Peppery earthy spice with lemony citrus on the nose and a hint of sweet bread underneath. Sweet bread and pine and citrus with a hint of earth and pepper in the flavor. Pretty tasty beer, I can’t believe it took me so long to try this, and I’m loving the 12oz bottles.
3.9 12 ounce bottle poured into a Belgian tulip glass. The beer is a pale gold with a huge head of white foam. Very fluffy head. The aroma has musty and sweet grainy notes. Some mild banana notes. Some dried hay. Sweet and effervescent taste. Mild pine bitterness comes through. Lighter to medium body. Way more refreshing than I ever would have expected. Fairly dangerous, really. Medium carbonation.
4.3 Aroma is tropical fruit, lemon, lime and spices/Belgian yeast. The flavor is tropical fruit, Belgian yeast, mild sweetness/sugar, malts and a tart/dryish/bitter finish.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a cloudy yellow with large frothy white head that lasts. The aroma is herbs, spruce, floral. Medium mouth, citrus, spice, yeast, light dry finish, very good.
3.5 One and only time having this was on 3.26.14. Bottled. I should start by saying, I love Simcoe so this will be a positive rate. The hops come through in the nose and in the taste. Not super juicy but I get some pine and a little bit of some oranges at the finish. Some yeastiness to the flavor.
3.6 12 oz bottle pours a cloudy golden color with s nice white head. Aromas of citrus, Belgian yeast, light candied sugar. Medium bodied, very nice beer
3.6 From a bottle to a tulip. Pours a cloudy gold with a thick white head. The smell is a lot of hops and that distinctive fruity belgian yeast smell. I also get the lemon and pepper that you’d typically get in a saison. Without any surprise, the taste is citrusy and piny hops. Good bitterness and a dry finish.

4.0 appearance: clear golden, with a big, bright white, frothy head. aroma: bright--citrus is strong up front, with blood orange, grapefruit, and lemon zest; then comes honeyed graham crackers and a bit of pie crust and white pepper. taste: slightly sweet, crackery-honey malts, then floral, citrus, and grassy hops. finish: smooth, but also lively, with a bit of yeasty sweetness and a delicate dry palate. notes: Feels more like a Belgian IPA, but that’s just a quibble. What it is, is a great beer. Good palate. Just enough sweetness to add character and balance out a judicious and surgeon-like application of hops. Would drink again. Bottle from Roots Market in Olney, Maryland.
3.7 Pours hazy golden yellow with thin white head. Smell is hop, bread and a little funk. Taste is hops, citrus, bread and a little bit of yeast. Medium body medium carb.
3.6 Bottle in Chevy Chase. Nice amber body with medium head. Nose is hoppy, toasty, sweet. Taste is sweet, caramel, malts, some honey. Pretty nice actually. Nice one.
3.6 Finally got around to ticking this bad boy. It was always too expensive, but then I snagged a single 12 ouncer for $4 in North Carolina. Cloudy golden yellow color with a massive, lasting white head. Thick lacing on the glass. Big citrus Simcoe hops, lemony and herbal. The flavor is dry and hoppy with a bitter finish. Medium body with high carbonation. Pretty good but not anything crazy.
3.9 Pale gold with thin foamy Lacy head; aroma is rich hoppy; flava is hoppy spice with crude oil notes then some yeasty banana notes; feels medium to thick and foamy; finishes mildly dry softly spicy grainy
3.5 Draught @ Alewife. Cloudy dark yellow with almost no head, white ring, citrus-vanilla aroma, medium carbonation, medium hoppy finish with bitter aftertaste. Quite hoppy for a Belgian.
3.5 Bottle at 7.3% from Nikki’s Liquors in Providence. It pours cloudy gold with a thick white head. The nose is fresh, fragrant, bready malt, menthol, eucalyptus and pine. The taste is crisp, bitter, pale bread, cracker, pine, earth, straw, grass and light spice with a bitter-sweet finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Pleasant hoppy Belgian ale.
4.0 This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a hazy burnt yellow color with a thick two finger rocky white foamy head bursting over the top of the glass. It actually wasn’t too much and cleaned up nicely. Messy clingy foamy lacing sweeps nicely around the glass. The smell starts off with burst full of bitter to sweet pine over top of sweet citrus and bitter citrus. Light little bit of spice follows underneath. The taste was spicy with a sweet juicy sticky middle bursting into a really nice sweet to spicy (almost like rye, hmm...it’s extremely subtle) aftertaste leading into a semi-sweet sticky finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs good as a Belgian Strong ale, I can see it allowing just enough harshness from the bitterness to hit my tongue just right. Overall, this was just a really good beer for what it is. I’d love to come back to it and could see it with some grilled lobster.
3.4 12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured yellow, hazy, nice carbonation and generous white head that left a nice lacing all over the glass. Aroma of malts, yeast and citrus fruit. Taste is hoppy, slightly bitter, some yeast and traces of malts. Very good beer, very enjoyable and with and adequate level of complexity.

3.7 12oz bottle, didn’t realize it was 2 months old until I got home, ugh, pours semi hazy golden orange with big three finger head. Nose is grain, pepper, light spice, subtle pine, subtle grass, some round orange fruit. Taste is slightly creamy, grain, soft classic Allagash yeast spice, crust, light orange zest and grassy pepper. Finishes dry, medium bitterness, dry biscuit, grain spice, orange, faint melon. Need to rate a fresh bottle.
3.7 Tap at Churchkey. Pours clear straw lots of head and lots of lacing. Nose is fruity, yeast and cereal. Flavours are fruity, pineapple, some lemone. Taste light sweet, light bitter (almost none), hint of tartness. Light body with lively carbonation.
3.5 Gold pour, white head. Aroma of lemon, grass, yeast, banana, spices, and a hint of mango. Flavor is fruity sweet, with notes of yeast and banana and a bitter/spicy finish.
3.7 Sweet Belgian candied fruits with a dry bitter pine hop finish. Good stuff. Might be a good bridge to get into IPAs.
3.7 White soapy head with unfiltered yellow/orange appearance. Sweet Belgian taste followed by hop bite and dry finish. Pretty light mouthfeel given the 7.5abv.
3.3 Nice to see this in 12 oz. bottles. Poured into a tulip. A hazy deep lemony yellow brew. Off-white head. Good carbonation. Herbal-citrus aromas. Flavor is a mix of pine, herbs, citrus and piney bitterness. Light honey malt backbone. Fruity yeast profile. Huge bitterness at the end. Not as good as I hope it would be. Overpriced in the full-size bottle format.
3.8 On tap at the brewery, very fresh. Clear yellow gold, minimal white head. Distinct honey aromas, pine resin, light tropical fruits, a bit of fresh pine zip. Light lingering bitterness, some sweetness. Clean, lightish body, long finish somewhere between earthy and bitter. Good.
4.1 750 ml bottle from BOTW (Rochester), served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. App.: Hazy deep golden with a full off-white head. Aroma: Holy hops, Batman!, dank/resinous/peppery, tropical fruits, citrus, so juicy and rich, Belgian esters, quite fruity, the hops take on an evergreen personality after that, wow. Palate: Medium body, HUGE carbonation. Flav.: The extreme carbonation interferes with the flavour, still has a HUGE hop presence with lots of pine/resinous/peppery character with some nice mango-like tropical fruitiness, Belgian esters, this is a journey; dry with good bitterness and a long, complex fruity/hoppy finish, Allagash made a good Belgian-inspired beer? Woulda never guessed...haha.
3.8 Location Draft at Barcade JC, 2/7/15 Aroma: The nose of this one is lightly Belgian yeast, with some citrus hops/rind. Appearance: It pours a clear gold, with a small white head, and drippy lace. Flavor: The flavor is yeast, light spice, and bitter citrus rind flavors. Palate: The body is medium, clean, soft carbonation, dry/spice finish. Overall Impression: I thought that this was a pretty tasty one. I’m glad I tried it for sure. Finds a good place near Belgian IPA.
4.0 Pours golden yellow-orange with a one finger white head with pretty nice lacing. Aroma is of citrus, ripe fruits, belgian yeast, sourdough bread, pine, and some light dankness. Taste is about the same as the aroma. Has a medium body with a semi bitter, semi dry, medium-long finish. Overall, a pretty interesting and tasty belgian IPA.
3.5 This poured a red color with a white head. Aroma was of caramel, pine, and dark fruit. Flavor was piney, grapefruit caramel and toast. Solid
