Allagash Midnight Brett

Allagash Midnight Brett

Midnight Brett is chocolate brown in color, brewed with 2-Row, Midnight wheat, raw wheat and rye malt. It was hopped with a blend of Perle, Glacier and Simcoe hops. The beer was fermented with our house strain of Brettanomyces in stainless tanks. The finished beer has the aroma and flavor of fresh berries, sour cherries and a slight roasted character. The finish is pleasantly tart and fruity making this beer very drinkable.

3.9 On tap at the Trappist. It pours a very dark brown color with an off white head. The aroma is lightly funky with cherry pie, some tobacco and a hint of treacle. The flavor has more cherry funk, ash, tobacco and leather. Mild dirty astringency and pie filling in the finish. Really tasty.
3.4 Draught at Stone Liberty Station, San Dieo. "Sour Saturday" during SDBW 2015. Dark brown beer with a decent beige head. Sourish chocolate aroma, caramel, raisins, grapefruit, licorice notes. Sourish chocolate flavor, grapes, grapefruit, raisins, licorice. I struggle a bit with chocolate in a sour like this.
3.8 Bottle at Todd’s. Cherry and oak. Sticky nose. Some sweet and brett. Really nice overall.
3.3 375ml bottle pours a dark brown with an off white head. tart dark cherry oak and leather taste
3.7 A rich brown color, generous head. Great aroma pops out, tart and fruity and funky. Moderately sweet and bitter. Brett gives this a nice bite.
3.6 Tap. Brown with small head. Balsamic vinegar, cherry, moderate funk. Solid flavor. Not door, but lightly tart with solid flavor.
3.9 This poured a darker brown with a beige head. Aroma was of toasted malt, dark fruits, and light funk. Flavor was toasty, dark fruit, Smokey with a wild almost tart finish. Really interesting.
3.7 Appearance: dark cola brown with a finger of creamy tan head that shrinks to a thick cap and has decent lacing. Aroma: sour stone fruit, with a bit of cherry and raspberry, with some tart raisin; there’s also some brown sugar and roasty notes. Taste: as the aroma indicates. Finish: slightly tart and sour and a little dry, with some yeasty spices and roasty notes lingering. Notes: Almost like a combination of a dubbel and a flanders red. Nice. Bottle from Sarah for Beerthday.
3.5 Tap @ Kiabaca w James tonight 07.22.2015. Black pour, small light brown head. Licorice/jagermeister nose with some cherry or stone fruit. Mouthfeel is light/thin and notes of sweet purple grape juice. Almost tart but not. High carbonation.
3.8 Pours hazy dark brown with nearly flat light tan head. Aroma of sour cherries, bretta, blackcurrant, light red grapes. Taste is berry tart with a balanced sweet finish. Light, smooth body with soft carbonation.
3.7 On draft at Stone Sour Ale Fest 2015. Dark reddish brown pour, with a light biege head. Tart, roasted malt, dark fruit, leather, oak, cherries, raisin, and oak. Nice.
3.6 On tap at Monk’s Cafe, Philadelphia. A hazy reddish dark brown beer topped by a small, dense, beige head. The aroma is funky, with cigar, leather, some dark sugar and candied cherries, and a touch of wood. Some stable in the flavor, as well as the funky leathery touch from the aroma, and cherry hints, dark sugar and some raisins. Rather dry on the palate, full-bodied and lightly effervescent. Lasting finish. A super complex and tasteful beer, but a tad weird I think. 150622
3.7 Tap at the source. Pours brown black color, huge off-white head. Aroma is sour dark fruits, cherries. Flavor is a definite roasted malt character, sour dark fruits. Cherry, strawberry, raspberry. Excellent.
3.9 Bottle, thanks EW2015, dark pour, white head, nose and taste are cherry, sour cherry, boo-yah
3.7 On tap at Scion in Silver Spring, MD. This 2015 version is listed at 7.3% ABV. Opaque, black-brown with a nice khaki head and very good lacing. Aroma of tart dark fruit (cherries, plums and berries), mild chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is very similar to the nose, but much fruitier. A bittersweet blackberry flavor comes through nicely. The roasted malt comes through at the end. The chocolate is there, but well hidden. Medium body and medium/low carbonization.
3.6 750ml bottle - thanks VastActiv! I had the honour of opening this bottle - it opened with a lovely resonant pop, but not even a hint of a gush, not even a worm - nicely done. (In contrast to the Hill Farmstead gusher earlier.) Beautiful - almost black, but with a large tight off-white head, persistent and sticky. Big bretty aroma. Nice roasty body, burnt but soft. Brett working well here, adding character, but not sharpness (again, in contrast to the Hill Farmstead). Mellow bretty roast finish. A fairly simple recipe, but a well-thought out one, and very well executed. Alcohol well covered too. Nice one - I’ll come back to this at the end if there’s any left. (There was :-) )
4.0 Draught @ Monk’s Café, Philadelphia, PA Pours dark reddish brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, funk, brett, some fruitiness, tartness and wood. Taste is medium sweet, light bitter with a light sour with a long slightly dry, fruity, brett, funky and woody finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.
4.3 Really dug this. Aroma funky cherries and oak and dark malt and apples. Hints of hops in nose and flavor. Moderately funky and dry. Very enjoyable, just wish it were cheaper.
3.6 Pours dark plum passes a little light, small head that retains. Light brett tartness, earth. Light body but the booze is hot, makes me warm and turns my face red.
3.6 (Bottle, 0375 l, at laiti’s, 20150613, thanks) The beer poured dark brown and cloudy. Its head was small and white. Aroma had tartness, vomit, fruitiness and malts Palate was medium bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were tartness, sweetness, malts, fruitiness and bitterness. Aftertaste was dry, sour and bitter. An interesting and not actually bad tart and malty brew.
3.2 375ml bottle @Laiti’s, thanks. Opens with a loud pop. Murky brown color. Tiny size head, disappears. Fruity, sour, vinegar, earthy, chewing-gum in aroma. Quite complex aroma. Fizzy prunes, strawberry, chupa-chups, dark fruits in taste. More dark fruits in aftertaste. Taste is quite weak and feels watery. Covers alcohol quite well thou. Fizzy mouthfeel.
3.1 Pours a very dark brown with a great head. Aroma is toffee, chocolate, cherry medicine syrup, candy, raspberry, roasty, malt. Taste is the cherry medicine again, roasted malts, bitter hops a bit too strong, sour, raspberry. Overall a very different beer but the cherry just tastes too much like the liquid cold medicine I hated as a child.
3.9 375ml bottle, thanks VastActiv! Pours dark brown, almost black with a foamy light brown head. Aroma of bretta, roasty malts, licorice, tart cherries, ripe fruits and candy. Taste is complex, funky, smooth and slightly roasty with some licorice, tart cherries, candy, spices and hops. Finish is smooth, tart and funky with some roastiness, juicy fruits, cherries, candy, hints of syrup and bretta. Pretty nice and balanced. Not your typical dark sour ale.
3.3 Bottle 0.375l at Laiti’s, Helsinki. Thanks to Jow! Date bottled: June 16, 2014. Colour is dark brown with small white head. Aromas and flavours: Berries, cherries, some sourness, fruits, hops and malts.
3.5 37,5 cl bottle @ home, bottled 16.06.2014. Thanks VastActiv! Aroma has strong bretta tones and vinegums. Also mild toffee tones. Flavour has bretta, grapefruit, some red wine and hints of vinegar. Also some hoppy tones. Somewhat pleasant.
4.2 On tap at Tasty. One of the best beers of the night- and there were many, many good ones. Unexpectedly great. Pours a light bodied porter-ish color with reddish hue. Has all the right notes of a sour for me- cherry, roast and some funk. Tart throughout and beautifully complex. Earthy notes add a warmth to the whole experience. Blown away. 6/6/15 Had to go back to Tasty for a full pour. Still amazing. Definite caramel/ molasses notes this time. Somehow balances the sweet and the tart nicely. Just so great. 10/26/15 On tap at Thirsty Monk downstairs. Super super funky. Really interesting. Still great.
3.7 Pours a reddish brown color with a large beady off white head. Notes of raspberry gummy fruit snacks, roasted nuts, yarn, and toasted bread. Nice
3.7 Bottle, 05/19/2014. Pours a deep brown, pillowy off-white head with sparkling carbonation gathering from beneath. Aroma starts with mild roast and builds into juicy berries, cherries, citrus grassy hop notes, fruity brett and funk coming through the finish with a touch of chocolate. Taste is tart, dark fruit with dark chocolate with a bitter finish of roast, hops and funk, something of a letdown from the quite nice aroma. Medium light body, lively carbonation. Decent.
4.0 Pours a dark reddish brown color with an off white head. Dark fruit, molasses, caramel, biscuit and funk aroma. Dark fruit, chocolate, molasses, biscuit, caramel, funk, yeast and spice flavors. Medium body and carbonation with a molasses and dark fruit finish.
3.8 Bottle shared by Nick at Castle Libation. Small snifter pours were dark in nature with little head. Aroma is slight coffee and chocolate with dark fruits and tart notes. The taste is prunes and raisins with a coffee and dark chocolate backbone. You get a nice brett funkiness and a slight hoppy bitter finish. A little dry, mouth is mild and delicate, moderate carb. Very tasty indeed.
