Allagash Tenth (10th) Anniversary Ale

Allagash Tenth (10th) Anniversary Ale

Allagash Brewing Company would like to introduce its Tenth Anniversary Ale, a special 10% ABV beer that celebrates 10 years of brewing artisinal Belgian Style ales. A unique interpretation of our flagship Allagash White, Tenth Anniversary is a blend of two different whites: a sweeter batch (brewed in February, 2005) and a drier batch (brewed in March, 2005). By blending the two batches, an additional complexity is imparted. Further complexity, most notably expressed by the delicate vanilla notes, was gained by aging some of the beer in new oak barrels.

3.8 Tap at Blind Tiger: I’m glad I finally got to try some of the last of this remaining stuff. Pours a deep cloudy golden with a dense white film of head. The aroma is rich and fruity with light oxidation and lots of phenolics. Some old dark fruits of prune & fig with a peppery spiciness and a mild white wine (vinous) character. Crisp body- pretty lively. The flavor is sweet and spicy- only a slight indication of oxidation. Has a mild tartness with a dry tannic oak note. Some soft vanilla notes from the barrel- mainly a soft vinous character. Light muscat grape suggestions as well as sweeter notes of prune in the background and dry spicy phenols. A touch of an orange peel citric character is there when it warms. It has held up quite well- was probably stellar about two years ago (Probably peaked at three years old).
3.9 Tap @ Blind Tiger - a million thanks to Rob Tod at Allagash for bringing his last keg of this to share with us. Pours a cloudy amber color with no head. Aroma was pepper, Belgian yeast, and spice (clove, coriander). Flavor is citrus, pepper, spice, and Belgian yeast, with a highly satisfying dry finish. I enjoyed it, and I’m glad I finally got to try this.
3.7 Bottle shared by hophead22 from Cletus, Thanks John...Cloudly light orange in appearance.. Smell was pepper and some peppermint candy sweetness.. NIce orange citrus flavor with a pineapple finish.. Tasty.
3.8 Bottle from Hophead22 beer tasting thanks to Cletus. Very light and cloudy pour. Aroma of coriander/oranges pineapple and pepper. Pepper was not present though in the taste. It was very refreshing.
3.8 750ml bottle courtesy of Cletus, thanks John. Hazy yellow/orange pour. Peppery aroma, pretty strong. Very smooth, not much pepper, more coriander and orange. Pretty tasty stuff.
3.9 Cloudy orange yellow with a small fluffy head. Aroma is bright, clean and citrusy with mellow spice. Taste is smooth and creamy with some spice and citrus, ornage, tangerine and lemon. Nice.
4.1 750ml bottle thanks to Eric @ Novare. This pours a golden hazy yellow with a quickly receding head. Aroma is a nice subtle of sweet fruits, bready, and some malt. The flavor is a wonderful caramelly, vanilla, lemons, oranges, and cloves. The palate was super smooth, this beer was fantastic. Aging helped it i think, but my god was I glad to get this finally!
2.9 Golden pour with a spicy, slightly sweet aroma. Flavor is very degraded with light spices (similar to the first Fluxus) with some banana, citrus, and earth. OK, but I’m not sure I would have liked this any better if fresh.
4.0 From the bottle, pours hazy golden yellow with a tall white head. Very dry and smooth on the palate. Fruity sweet up front, notes of apricot, dried pineapple, with a mild estery spice. The oak was very mild, only seeming to lightly dry out the finish.
4.2 Had a bottle of this two nights ago courtesy of a beer friend. Colour... Golden straw. Nose... muscat, asian pear, botrytis, quince. Palate... Almost no carbonation, more quince and pear, cardamom, lichee, clover honey, apricot, lightly cloying with a delightful finish!
4.0 courtesy of Matta. 2005 bottle. Pours a nice cloudy orange / gold with thick frothy white head. Aroma is yeasty with some really nice touch of fruits (apricot - tropical fruits -. Taste thick with good yeasty mouthfeel. Overall smooth and sweet with sugar notes, light brett giving a sweet apple mouthfeel. Lightly malty. This is one tasty beer, aged well.
4.0 Cloudy golden coloured body with a honey/orange tint and a thin white head. Aroma of honey, yeast, coriander seed, lavendar, curacao and a light amount of hops. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong malty flavour with plentiful sugars showing fruits and coriander seed freshness. Nice flavour all the way through. Aftertaste clean, but good sugars throughout the beer make it even better. Overall, a great beer - definitely worth trying if you can find it. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 02-August-2005.
3.7 750 ml bottle shared with willblake and dickinsonbeer. Pours a mostly clear nectar orange/amber with a fluffy white head and some visible black particles floating around that looks like chunks of fresh ground pepper. Aroma has lots of sweetness up front withan orange juice/lemonade combo going on. Additionally there are some spicey notes along with honey. Medium to fuller body with some lively carbonation and a very dry finish. Flavor of yeast, lime..orange..and lemon juices, some citrus rind and grain. A nice sweet brew but the super dryness knocked it down a notch or two for me.
4.1 Corked and Caged. 750ml bottle 3 years and 9 months oldwith many thanks to fordest who brought this to my 2000th rating tasting and left it, and then said he would be happy for me to drink it. Shared with my girlfriend Cyn after a spicy carrot soup dinner she made. Pours golden orange with a bright white head and a lot carbonation eminating from the center of the glass. Nose is sweet, light and yeasty with a touch bread and a nice hint of malt. Taste is sweet, light, with hints of clove and fruit. There is even a touch of hop bitterness. Gotta say this is a tasty high alc wit like brew. Yummers.
3.7 Bottle from mgumby. Thanks so much, Mike! Nose is earthy, belgian yeast, malt, and clove. Pretty nice flavor with only mild signs of oxidation. I was already drunk at this point. Go me!
3.5 Carolina Crew Gathering Greenville, NC Thanks to Sam for sharing this! Slightly hazy yellow pour. Earthy aroma. Spicy orange flavor with a crisp clean finish. Slightly oxidized, but is holding up pretty well. Even tasted a little bit of hops shining through
3.6 Thanks turdferguson. Pours soft hazy pale yellow with a one finger creamy white head. The nose is subdued and earthy, lightly sweet, fruity, lightly oxidized. The flavor is oxidized, some orange, crisp, spicy, light alcohol. Crisp mouthfeel. Would have probably been better fresh.
3.5 Tasted at the Carolina Crew gathering, Greenville - thanks to Turdferguson for sharing! A yummy one, with a nice aroma of malts, orange, and a trace of butterscotch. Still nice and thick, as you’d expect with a full cloudy beer like this, with some hops holding up fairly well. Nice lingering finish, another solid one from Allagash.
3.6 Bottle. The bottle opens with a mild puff, then bubbles over moments later. It pours a hazy gold with a lively white head, and offers a glorious fruit-and-spice aroma of apricots and orange muscat. Lots of coriander, candy sugar. Gentle wood notes, a drop of vanilla. Pretty notable alcohol in the midrange. Despite the sweet nose and early fruitiness, it’s fairly dry in the close with definite house-yeast character. (I’ve got to admit I don’t see that house character as a plus; I’m not a big Allagash fan.) While it didn’t necessarily make me think of "a Shakespeare Play interpreted by hot naked chicks" (see Glouglouburp’s review), nonetheless it’s an impressive beer and while I find myself tiring of it somewhat through the first glass, it’s not too hard to muster a second wind and keep on enjoying.
3.9 Mmmm, delicious, Sweet candied fruit esthers in the nose, spicy coriander, and a bit of a vanilla barrel aged toastiness. Light on the palate, with some sweet bready maltiness, with hints of toffee and caramel. Finishes extremely dry, with a small hint of alcohol. Well done!
3.9 Pours a cloudy, golden-tangerine color. A small, foamy, off-white head leaves minimal spotty lacing behind. The nose is simultaneously sweet and spice. Notes of caramel and bready yeast are set off by candied orange peel, pears, grain of paradise, and a hint of coriander. New oak imparts its signature woody vanilla scent as well. Flavors follow suit, with a uniquely Belgian yeast note that is reminiscent of something Fantôme might brew. The grain of paradise is quite distinct, lendin its signature tropical fruitiness to the light caramel and vanilla notes. This is beautifully spiced, with each element working hand in hand. The candied orange peel just pops, and the coriander isn’t overbearing like it is far too often. Medium-plus bodied, finishing smooth and fruity, but slightly warm from the alcohol. Easy drinking, even on a 90 degree day. This is an excellent brew that has aged quite gracefully. Bravo to Allagash.
(Rating #1601)
3.4 In short: A very good Belgian Ale foundation marred by an excessive amount of spices (mainly coriander) How: Back from Europe tasting session with Montreal crew The look: Partly cloudy yellow-golden body with a small white head In long: Nose is candy/spicy. Taste is rather spicy with too much coriander for my liking. Some other spices too but coriander is the one really coming out. Covered by the spices are oily/buttery orange flavoured cookies. Warming alcohol finish in the back of the throat. The otherwise pleasant citrusy hops are unfortunately killed by the spiciness. I think there’s a very good beer in there but unfortunately with its omnipresent spiciness this was like a Shakespeare Play interpreted by hot naked chicks, I was hard to focuss on its worthy qualities.
4.0 Caged and corked. I found this gem this month at Bon Vivant. There’s not indication to a bottling date so I’m not sure of its lineage. It opens easily with little vigor and pours in a whimper, golden orange. The aroma is tart and fruity, not unlike some mandarin oranges, yet there’s an underlying promise of syrupy goodness. This essence carries on in the flavor, fairly sweet on top with a definite, dainty fruitiness. There’s just enough spice and a big dry finish to keep it from being too much in the sweet vein. This would do lovely with a big garlicy plate of pasta, or just as an apertif. (#3324, 2/16/2008)
3.9 Pours a cloudy orange with a thick white head. Aroma of syrup, licorice, and orange. Very carbonated, slightly funky flavor. Citrus comes through as well. Really enjoying this one as it has aged a couple of years.
3.9 Bottle brought by someone generous to our hotel room at GABF 2007. Tasted during our large Saturday night tasting. Visible yeast floaties in a pale hazy orange beer. Smells are big and citrusy (melon, orange, muscat grapes) with some funky horseblanket. Lightly sweet and soft in the mouth with spidery yeasty things (almost clove and corriander) playing on the top of the tongue. Some dark grain in a somewhat spicy, fruity and still sweet finish.
4.0 From a 750mL Bottle. Generously shared by TAR. Pours a transparent gold color with a huge head of active, fizzy white suds. Sweet, fruity esters in the nose, bringing out notes of candied oranges, muscat grapes, and herbal coriander. Medium light bodied, fizzy carbonation that sizzles on the palate. Flavors of Belgian candi-sugar and pear liquor create a sweet and fruity profile, but this is all kept in check by the lightness and fine attenuation of the palate. A light yeasty spice adds some mild peppery complexity in the finish, along with a soothing alcohol warmth. A masterful creation that is holding up quite well.
3.9 Bottle, sampled at BA Belgian Beer Fest, 10/27/07. Poured hazy golden, with a small off-white head. Aroma of yeast, coriander, orange, and pepper. Flavor is yeasty, with pepper, malt, orange, vanilla and some oak. This is holding up very well.
4.0 RBSG 07 Minneapolis Grand Tasting: Orange color, light head and lacing. Nose of light oranges and grassy coriander and orange peel. The flavor is bright and balanced, sweet and pleasant. Nice yeast and orange, clean, balanced.
3.2 Nov 2005 - Beer poured with huge, out of control head. Aroma was funky yeasty, whatever that is that makes saisons funky. This beer is just too darned sweet...sickly. There was a little spiciness there and a little hop presence that salvaged this...but still not a huge fan.
