Alley Kat Olde Deuteronomy Barley Wine

Alley Kat Olde Deuteronomy Barley Wine

Olde Deuteronomy is a beer that is high in alcohol, full-bodied, and has a "chewy" maltiness. Because it improves with age, it is called a barley wine.

Olde Deuteronomy is truly a beer to be shared with friends and should be sipped out of a brandy snifter. Each vintage will age and improve for several more years.

ABV varies from 10.2% to 11.5%. 26.4°

3.8 Murky deep brown pour, thin dark head with little retention. Aroma of big malt, toffee, brown sugar, dark fruit, and some alcohol. Taste is is sweet heavy malt. Thicker, leaning towards syrupy body. some warming alcohol comes through but not unpleasant.
3.7 Rating #1429 08.01.2015 - Beer #12 in @beerblast #Beermas. Amber pour with a bubbly tan head, decent retention. Aroma is brown sugar, caramel malt, alcohol. Low-medium carbonation, explosive alcohol warmth and depth. Palate is a whirlwind of malty sweet, and boozy alcoholic notes, mild astringency, mild bitterness that lingers into the finish. Very nice.
3.9 Bottle traded with TimE about 3/4 years ago. Thought I’d age this a bit and my has it turned out well. Colour is murky reddish/orange, few bits in it, off white head which dissipates to nothing. Nose is musty grain, barley sugar boiled sweets, burnt sugar/caramel, citrousy blood oranges, bit of grapefruit peel, little yeast extract and slight oxidisation. Taste is musty grain, citrousy blood oranges, grapefruit rind, caramel, barley sugar. Really lovely blood orange character providing bitterness and then softer sugary notes complimenting it. Musty and soft, just how I like my barley wines.
3.5 341 ml bottle shared by DrSilverworm, left over from a tasting. Thanks, Chris & Beau! Pours a clear burnt orange color with no head. But it’s been open for a bit. Notes of tea, brown sugar, toast, caramel, earth, toffee, and some underlying bitterness. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a malty, rich, somewhat bitter and earthy mouthfeel. Now I need to try it fresh, because open for a while, I liked what was there. I’ll visit Edmonton for it someday.
3.4 11.2 or 12 oz bottle shared by b3shine. Pours a clear dark amber color with a thin off white film. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, caramel, an herbal hop character, fruit, some oxidation, though it says 2015, leans more toward the malty side.
3.1 Bottle to snifter (shared with the Cincy crew; thanks DuffMan). 2015 vintage, 20th Anniversary Edition. Looks solid; a transparent brown with thin off-white head that quickly dissipates into thin lacing. Smells bittersweet with notes of toffee and oak. Tastes like it smells with a medium full-bodied mouthfeel. Unbalanced, but may settle down with some age.
3.9 Deep red brown body with a tan head. Sweet aroma, with caramel notes. Taste is clean with rich fruit and caramel notes and a hint of toasted nuts.
3.5 The beer starts fresh but viscous. Easy to drink but deep and thick. Malt, dried fruits, intense. Viscous, smooth, sticky. Toffee, dried plums, moderate bitter, smooth and malt. Not too sweetish, but easy to drink. Nice but not as complex as it could be.
4.2 I’m not usually partial to this style, but this one is very nice. Very, very malty, and not boozy.
2.5 Not a Barley Wine fan but tried a small sample on tap. Sure it isn’t a bad beer, just not my style.
3.5 Pours a cloudy amber with a small white head. Nice amount of carbonation. Aroma of fruity malts and hops with some citrus, plum and a whiff of alcohol. Flavour is quite bitter, a little strong on the alcohol but not too much. Nice balance of hops and sweet fruit and has a mild port or brandy taste. A little milder than some barley wines, it’s quite nice.
3.1 Pours medium amber with a thin tan head diminishing rapidly to a thin skim, spotty lacing. (3/5) Nose is brown sugar, dark boozy fruit, caramel and toffee, some bitter chocolate, earthy vinous notes. (6/10) Taste is moderate to strong sweet, moderate bitter. (6/10) Medium body tending to the watery, moderate carbonation, off-dry mildly bitter finish. (4/5) Meh. I dunno, barleywines just continue not to do it for me. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is about this one, but there’s something in the flavour that puts me off. (12/20)
4.0 Bottle to goblet thanks YEG_Willy Cream, caramel, brown sugar, whiskey, rum, raisin, candied fruit, and apricot. Translucent amber, thin creamy and frothy head. Taste is caramel, hops, resin, and pine. Best Alberta beer I’ve ever had.
3.8 Bottle share at SRBG 2014. Pours a clear amber with a small beige head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, and malt. Taste is caramel, fruit, grain, and toffee. Nice.
3.8 Bottle @ Presidential Suite. Thanks to the Canadians. Copper colored beer with a small white head. Nice malty aroma of caramel, toast, and toffee. Light booze, plenty of brown sugar, and some vanilla. A lot of dark fruit, too. Good sweetness on the palate without it being overwhelming. Good mix of chocolate, dark fruit, and sweet sugar/malt. Nice toffee, caramel, and brown sugar. Mild earthy hops.
3.7 650ml bottle. Huge beer, thick malt presence, some chewiness, very solid brew.
3.6 Bottle thanks to someone! Pours a clear light amber with a tan head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of sweet grain with touches of caramel and toffee. Flavor is full of sweet grains and caramel with a touch of caramel.
3.9 Bottle - Vintage 2011 - Vinous and caramel with some booze. Clear copper with a very thin white head. Orange, vinous and a nice long caramel sweetness. Nice if you can get it.
3.3 Taster at RBSG bottle share. Moderately hazy dark red color. Thin ring of off-white head. Couple bits of lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of crisp, lighter carbonation. Light slick finish. Big tropical fruity red jolly rancher aroma. Moderate sweet taste. Alright barleywine. Works, but not much special about it. Hides ABV reasonably well. Light earthy spicy hop.
3.6 thanks to Oakedcanuck for the beer 330 Ml bottle 2010 vintage Dark mahogany color, light tan head that falls to a collar. Thick ABV legs. Dried fruit nose. Brown sugar, apricot, peach, and cardboard smell. Big malt presence. Hides ABV well. Slights notes of oxidation but a lot of dried stone fruits and malt. Big full on beer. Very dry nose. Taste and feel are the same. Big and dry. Lots of dry malts and stone fruits. Slight notes of oxidation but a strong, strong barleywine either way.
4.0 Pours cloudy Amber. 2011 brew. Unique nose, dried apricot, candied apple. This is an incredible beer, high bitter but the malt balances it out.
2.6 Forgotten rot box "treasure" found @ moms house. Pours cloudy amber with a bunch of floaties. Aroma of raisins, cardboard, and wet dog. Flavor does not disappoint. Very sweet, and just old. Falls flat on its face in the finish even though it is plenty carbonated. Not the chips.
3.6 Bottle (341 ml) 2011. Extra from kbudd19, thanks! Clear dark copper with a small quickly disappearing off-white head and no lacing. Aroma is of toffee, dark fruits, brown sugar and light alcohol. Taste is moderately to heavily sweet with toffee, dark fruits, alcohol, brown sugar and light pine. Light alcohol warming. Full body. Low to medium carbonation. Exactly what a Barley Wine is supposed to be. Rich and complex. Maybe a tad too sweet.
3.8 Bottle from 2011. Mahogany with some sediment and a bit of biege head that disappears. Some plum, alcohol with a small hint of nail polish, vanilla, toffee, well blended, smooth, chewy bread malts. Mild carbonation, moderate+ body, sweet with a bit of a hoppy hit, still a little boozy after 2 years but I like the kick and bit of spice that it provides. Very tasty.
3.9 Clear copper liquid, with a small orange-copper head that persisted longer than I expected for a 10% ABV beer. The aroma was more malt than hops; predominantly caramel. The flavour was also more malty than hoppy, with caramel again being the predominant flavour. Alcohol warmth was very smooth; not at all harsh or hot. Hop bitterness was very prevalent and lingered pleasantly long after the flavour had gone. Mouthfeel was moderately full-bodied. This was a very smooth and drinkable Barley Wine.
4.2 2011 10.3 abv. Pours a clear dark copper/ligt brown with little white head. Aromas of intense rich maltiness, sweet caramel, dark dried fruits, mild alcohol, light earthy hops. Flavours of caramel, rich malty sweetness, dark dried fruits, alcohol and a light bitterness. Fantastic barley wine.
4.7 2011 edition. Pours a clear reddish copper with a small head and some lace. Aroma is caramel, Vanilla, cinnamon and a faint bit of wood. Taste is sweet caramel with a hint of cinnamon and vanilla with a smooth bitterness on the end. Excellent barley wine. This beer ages so well and just keeps getting better... Looses some hop bitterness but still so complex and smooth.
3.2 Pours a dark brown with almost no head. Aroma is malt, slight spice, bread. Taste is similar. Very thick beer.
3.5 2011 bottle at 10.3%, from Kensington Wine Market. It pours deep mahogany brown, with a thin yellow-white head. The nose is toffee, wood, varnish, raisin, caramel, spice, cinnamon bun and umami notes. The taste is wood, varnish, leather, spice, toffee, cinnamon bun, over-ripe fruit and booze, with a dry finish. Medium-full body and fine, prickly carbonation. Well balanced. A solid barley wine.
3.7 Bottle. Clear bright mahogany pour with little head. Aroma of rich toffee, barley sugar and plums - very traditional barleywine aroma. Taste is rich, very sweet with some alcohol notes. Pretty intense beer, palate is very full bodied with moderate carbonation. Pretty archetypical example of the style.
