Almanac Farmer's Reserve Blackberry

Almanac Farmer's Reserve Blackberry

We love blackberries. Tart, sweet and complex but guarded by thorny branches, these alluring fruit have been a favorite of ours since we added them to our very first beer. This sour blonde ale is infused with loads of coastal Blackberries from Swanton Berry Farm in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains and aged in wine barrels for many months. Pair with duck dishes and summer salads.

3.7 Citrus fruits, sour lemon, lime, dark berries, blackberry. Hazy, reddish small, creamy, reddish head. Light sour, more sour, acidic citrus fruits, lemon, lime, soft carbonation, medium bodied. Decent. Keg at GABF17, Denver.
2.9 Bottle. Pours thin and with little body. It has a great color for a blackberry beer, and a pretty solid berry nose. But the blackberry doesn't hold up the tart, sourness of the baseline beer as well as the raspberry variant does. This comes across as a bit emptier, but still pleasant and enjoyable. 3.9 Pinkish purple pour with a thin pale pink head. Big tart, sour blackberry, red fruit, earthy, funky, lemon aromas. Taste is sour blackberry, lemon, wheaty, earthy, more blackberry comes through as the tartness starts to fade. Like this one a lot.
4.1 375 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/1/2016. Pours slightly hazy reddish orange/pink/purple color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light pink head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing lings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big tart/tangy blackberry, fruit skin, cherry, plum, lemon, green apple, red grape, white wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, wheat, and cracker; with light notes of leathery/musty funk, vanilla, pepper, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, blackberries, wine barrels, and light-moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart/tangy blackberry, fruit skin, cherry, plum, lemon, green apple, red grape, white wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, wheat, and cracker; with light notes of leathery/musty funk, vanilla, pepper, and yeast/oak earthiness. Moderate fruity/lactic tartness; light yeast/wine/oak spiciness, and fruit tang on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy blackberry, fruit skin, cherry, plum, lemon, green apple, red grape, white wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, pepper, light leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, blackberries, wine barrels, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tartness and wine/oak spiciness balance; with minimal puckering flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from tart/spiciness and wine/oak spiciness. Medium-plus carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/grainy/acidic, and fairly tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.1%. Overall this is an awesome fruited sour/wild ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, blackberries, wine barrels, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink with the balanced lactic/tannic/drying finish. Really great well rounded Brett complexity; perfectly balanced Lacto, fruit, and wine barrels; and just enough pale malt to keep it from being puckering. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.
4.0 Bottle, many thanks Thomas Schneider! Hazy purple color with white head. Aroma is blackberries, barrel, cinnamon. Taste is cinnamon, blackberries, medium carbonation, tannic. Medium carbonation. Awesome, better than Mûre if you ask me (although it's very sour as usual).

The taste is crisp, tart, good mouth - pucker, sour blackberry, sherbet, acidic bite, granny smith apple and a touch of jam. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Bright, tart and fruity. Rather quaffable.

3.8 (375ml 2016 bottle from boxbeers.dk) Pours pale red with a small pinkish head that vanishes quickly without lace. Aroma of semi-sweet blackcap raspberries, not so much the rich earthy quality of blackberry, Swedish berry candy, light lactic lemony bite, quite oaky, vanilla, softly vinous, musty basement funk. Flavour is fairly delicate black raspberry merging to blackberry, rather tart, some lactic lemon and yoghurt, fairly woody, with very soft funk. Finish remains tart, mix of citrus and berries, with a little berry seed quality. Fairly light bodied with slightly above average prickling carb. Has a lower fruiting level like many of Almanac’s beers, but still rather nicely flavoured.

3.8 I’ve had this for about a month, but I couldn’t wait any longer. I love these Farmer’s Reserve beers. Aroma of blackberry, overripe apple, and funk. Taste is somewhat funky and sour, with some booze, and diacetyl. Bright red with a thin pink head. Sadly this is not fantastic as expected.
