Alpine Beer Company Exponential Hoppiness

Alpine Beer Company Exponential Hoppiness

Very popular. A complex hopping method where each hop addition is double the previous amount. More hops in the hopback and then two dry-hop sessions. The second dry-hop session is with whole hops and oak chips. 1.093 OG 10.75%ABV

3.9 Bottle from wheresyourball. Pours a cloudy copper color. Aroma is hops, some alcohol, and some oak. Taste follows with resin hops, oak in the finish. Pretty smooth considering it 11 abv. This one could sneak up on you. Tasty beer.
3.9 22oz bottle into tulip. Minneapolis. Pours copper-orange, hazy, super small off white head. Aroma is citrusy, grapefruit and orange, malty backbone. Taste is bitter with a little sweetness. Body is full, rich frothy texture, medium length finish.
4.3 On tap @ Alpine Brewpub, Alpine - CA. Color: copper, golden blond beer with small carbonation and small white foam. Smell: hoppy blast with fruity balance and caramel notes. Finish with alcohol. Taste: nice hoppy domination and oily sensation. Notes of pineapple and mango with a strong caramel and alcohol finish. Aftertaste: nice hoppy and dry bitterness finish. Really strong a good IPA!
4.3 Draft at the brewery. Pours hazy orange/amber with a thick, bubbly off white head. Tastes like grapefruit, caramel, boozy, really smooth citrus hops, a hint of sweet orange, and toasted malt. Light/medium body and low carbonation. Smells like grapefruit, caramel, booze, orange, resin, and lots of fruity citrus hops.
5.0 Man how do they get so much hop aroma, and so many different hop aromas there are, pine pear spices everything under sun!!! Flavor is strong n a good way...absolutely hoptabulous!
4.6 From notes. This was shared at a tasting put on by @mikem409 on November 7. The pour is a beautiful golden amber color with an off-white head that falls down quickly, leaving some good lace. The aroma is beautiful. There is a great fruitiness with orange, lemon, mango, grapefruit. There is a nice movement through a tropical hoppiness and into a floral hoppiness. There is a little pine resin on the back end, which is just a great balance with the hops. The flavor is a little woody, but there is the blast of floral hops and a great citrus presence to go with the piney resin. The mouth feel is just great. Thick and clingy while coming off as light and airy. The aftertaste is beautifully hoppy and full of resin, and a great lingering citrus note with absolutely no detectable alcohol which is extraordinarily impressive for a beer at almost 11%
4.3 Sample at the 2014 Infected Chimipalooza on 11/01/2014. Clear orange-amber color with a medium thick off-white head that diminishes gradually. Partial rings of lace. Aroma of piney hops, citrus and malt. Full-bodied with flavors of resiny hops, grapefruit and toasted malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a lingering citrusy hops aftertaste. Enjoyable beer all around.
4.2 Bottle: Thanks, Jason. Another big Alpine want of mine. Slightly cloudy & unfiltered with a rustic look, amber in color & capped with an off-white, almost gray tinted head that fades quickly. The aroma is immediately captivating & reminds me strongly of Hill Farmstead’s Ephraim. Sticky & juicy fruits gushing from wall to wall; mango, orange, pineapple, grapefruit, both citric & tropical all at once with a vibrant, oily & earthy dankness overcasting the entire parade. Light perfume, zesty herbal notes & faint pine with an undertow of inherent sweetness that seems akin to dextrose, giving off a nice sugar cookie vibe. The taste includes a larger presence of spicy & earthy hoppage, though not a bad thing. Might be from the oak chips, too, as there’s a strong woodsy, almost forestry thing happening that really makes this unique. Big floral notes, toffee drizzled cookie dough, sticky mango flesh, overripe pineapple, grapefruit, bitter tangerine, all leading into a conclusively herbal, earthy, fruity, semi-sweet & semi-bitter finish. Oily & sticky, lacquering the palate with a fresh coat of dank pine sap & hemp oil. Can’t believe this shit is 11% ABV... WHERE IS THE ALCOHOL? Fantastic beer from Alpine, even better than I expected.
3.7 Fresh bottle. Pours hazy orange/gold with tall white fizzy head. Lots of pine/spruce in the nose with some background citrus. Big tropical fruits in the taste - passion fruit and pineapple come to mind - along with some night bitter, resinous hop. Well crafted.
4.7 Thnx to sdcraftbeerguy for bringing this over ! Pours clear blonde , small white head . Smell is hoppy, with some ... Funky ( not at all like Brett ) ... perhaps the wood ? Some honey . Taste is sweet , honey aspect again , bitter , very balanced, some creamy ( wood ? ) aspect . This is very unique , to say the least ! Magnificent how drinkable this is ( 11 ABV ????? damn ! ) and very, very damn nice ! Flavors keep coming, building up and down in intensity . Honey sure must be used ?! the hops themselves are fruity ( stonefruity , so I’d supose Nelson Sauvin or likewise ) , touch of Pine , touch of sweet ( hallertau ??? ) Perhaps some Amarillo ? Just guessing here as my knowledge is far from perfect . I’d say, just drink this one, and see for yourself . But its very , very nice !
4.0 Type: 22-oz. bottle Glass: Modern Times pint glass From: Alpine Beer Company in Alpine, Calif. Price: $11.99 (+$2.30 for Brown Bag Tickets) Purchased: Sept. 9, 2014 (picked up on Sept. 27, 2014) Consumed: Sept. 28, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a caramel, honey, murky color with three fingers of khaki cream rocky head. Lots of various streams of bubbles coming up from the bottom. Great layered lacing along the sides of the glass. Excellent retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 4.40) Smelled hops galore - Citra, spicy Simcoe, floral, grapefruit, tropical, mango, grapefruit rind, resin, faint Cascade and caramel. Some spicy bitterness late, but didn’t taste anywhere near 11 percent ABV. (Smell - 4.35) Wow to the taste. Pretty damn smooth for 11 percent ABV was my first thought. Not as potent as the smell. Citra, floral, light resin, bitter grapefruit, tropical, mango, light pineapple (wishful?), Columbus and light Cascade. (Taste - 4.45) Medium body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, bitter, but still smooth finish. Warming late. The 11 percent ABV is very well-hidden. This was the best part of the beer. (Feel - 4.69) A pretty damn good beer. Probably didn’t quite live up to my hype, but glad I have another after this. (Overall - 4.44) 4.45 99 A
4.4 Excellent beer, love the aroma of citrus and dry pine/oak. Wonderful flavor of malts slight caramel but great hop bitterness!
4.1 Bottle - pours golden/yellow. Nice citrus notes in the nose. Sweet honey plus hoppy taste. More citrus flavors. Balanced nicely for such a big abv beer. The alcohol is there but it isn’t overpowering.
3.9 22 ounce bottle at a tasting. Pours a dark golden orange with a decent off-white head. Aroma of citrus, pine, and malt. Taste is grapefruit, tropical, pine, caramel malt, and wood. Excellent.
4.5 Beautiful pour. Rich, amber color. Great aroma, classic citrus notes. I also get tropical fruit. Strong malt presence with a syrupy finish. Hop character is beautiful. Sweet citrus hits first, a bit of alcohol comes in the middle, and the malt/syrup notes finish it off. A really beautiful beer.
4.7 900th review!!!!. Pours golden orange with a nice two finger off white head with excellent lacing. Aroma is of fragrant citrus (orange and grapefruit), tropical melons, sweet malts, caramel, apricot, pineapple and mango, light pine, and some light herbal woody notes. Taste is fresh and candied citrus, tropical fruits, pine, melon, apricots, sweet malts, caramel, herbal hops, light woody notes, and some very light booze. Has a medium-full body with a super creamy, chewy mouthfeel, and pretty bitter, yet still somewhat balanced, semi dry, slightly warming but still very smooth, long, lingering finish. Overall, a excellent world class triple IPA that almost gives Younger a run for its money.
4.0 Bottle thanks to Chow. Pours a clear orange with medium off white head that lasts. The aroma is strong grapefruit, citrus, and hemp. Medium mouthfeel with nice pine, citrus, grapefruit with light bitterness, hides alcohol really well, very impressive.
3.8 22 oz bottle, thanks to Richiesd! March 2014 batch, enjoyed March 31. Almost clear, amber color. Thick off white head, with good retention and OK lacing. Aroma’s of pine/resin, citrus, disappearing mostly after a while to make way for more caramel and herbal hops. Retronasal there’s caramel, earthy hops, herbal, resin and fruity acidity. Flavor is moderate sweet, moderate bitter. Alcohol doesn’t seem like 11% although it warms the throat. Fairly full bodied. Long finish, herbal, moderate to full bitterness. Glad I had the chance to try this.
4.0 Really nice DIPA, sweet, limited bitterness, and a lot of tropical fruit. Not as good as Nelson, but still quite good.
4.0 bottle thanks to Jeremy. pours a very hazy orange reddish color with large white head, lots of very tiny bubbles, excellent lacing. Nose full of orange zest and lemon. Flavor is a citrus explosion with a slightly sweet malt backbone. a little bit of alcohol warming, but for 11%, this is damn drinkable. I don’t really get the oak chips as a primary flavor, but I think it lends to a little "something" that really sets this beer apart from other DIPAs. a little sweet for my liking, but to be expected for 11% beer. pretty great.
3.9 A- Pours a deep, clear reddish hue with a 2 finger frothy head that leaves tons of lacing. S- Smell is dominated by grapefuit and floral hops. T- Very resiny, pine, grapefruit, bready, with an underlying berry tone and big alcohol notes on the back end. M- Thick with medium carbonation. D- This one didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. I enjoyed it but just wouldn’t put it at the same level as some of the other big DIPAs or "triple ipas"
3.9 65cl, exclusive American brew, thx alot to Ryan for bringing this over!, very complex bitter brew, fruity/bitter and slightly malty/woody, not too heavy, very balanced, hazy, good head, very good brew
4.6 On draft at the source. A wickedly smooth brew that is near perfect! What stood out was the sweet malt on the palate!
4.8 Thanks to jbtice0315 for picking this up fresh for me in SD! Cheers Jesse! ABV 11% Poured to New Belgium globe. A: Pours a clear golden ale with superb clarity. Fine white single finger head dissipates in a minute or so to leave a thick sheet of meringue foam. Consistent carbonation evident through the ale. Spider web lacing on glass. S: Pine, sweet alcohol, bubble gum, grapefruit, citrus rinds. Alcohol a hint more evident than I would prefer, but nonetheless, yummy. T: See above. Add bitterness so acute the glands behind my jaw. Just what I’ve been looking for in an Impy IPA lately. Been through Hopslam, Pliny, etc. This is fantastic! I think I might prefer it. M: Medium body, medium carbonation. Clearly slicks the palate while cold. As it warms, the body of my mouth is dried. Pleasant. D: This is among the best, no question. I think the hype matches this beer appropriately. Worth seeking, but not a 1200 miles journey (or global: see PtY). Serving type: bottle 02-20-2011
3.3 Bottle shared by Nick, thanks! Clearly this is past its prime based on the fact that this was released almost 2 months ago. Smell is plastic, honeydew melon, caramel. Taste is caramel, acorn, slight grapefruit, and plastic. Amazing drinkability considering this is 11%, and not sticky sweet either. Wish I had this fresh.
4.0 2 ounce bottle poured a light amber color with aromas of grapefruit, citrus, light malt and some pine. Flavors follow suit, lots of grapefruit in the flavor, light bitterness, this is a solid beer overall that I wish I could enjoy everyday.
3.9 Fresh bomber. Pours a slightly hazy light bronze with a small white head. Bubbles flying up from the bottom. A big floral bouquet with tangerines, grapefruits, orange peel, toffee, biscuit, some alcohol, and a slight hint of oak. Bitter slam up front with a combination of grapefruit juice, orange zest, a hint of caramelly malts, oak, and more big bitter on the dry finish. Medium mouthfeel, high carbonation. You can’t tell there is alcohol warmth here but it is very light on the palate for such a big hitter. The oak is a nice touch here and does not overpower. Perhaps the driest and most bitter IPA I have tried, up there with Heady and Crooked Tree. Really good beer and very glad I got the chance to try it.
3.7 Traded bottle crazy fresh. I think the most impressive part of this beer is the drinkability for something this big and 11 ABV. I still would have liked a little citrus or fruit hop character to go with the bitterness. Good and glad I got to try it fresh.
4.3 The word for this beer is balance! I can tell the hops are melting the enamel off my teeth, but it's extremely smooth and drinkable, a bit heavy on alcohol
4.2 Bottle shared thanks to iphonephan. Pours clear golden with tan head. Aroma of citrus, orange peel pine, resin, caramel malt. Flavour is over moderate sweet and bitter. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Excellent!
