Amager / Barrier The Mortician

Amager / Barrier The Mortician

This is a blending beer of Barrier’s Morticia Imperial Stout in a non barrel-aged version and Amager’s Hr. Frederiksen Imperial Stout, with an added twist of Kenyan coffee and smoked malt.

English: Throughout the 18th century The Alistair Smythe Burial and Cremation Company had a thriving business based in Hempstead, Long Island NY. Immigrants brought in illness and disease galore, and personal hygiene was still not really regarded as anything other than a waste of time. Let’s be honest, people died like flies and the Smythe morticians had their hands full taking care of the dead. But with the 19th century approaching things were starting to change. Everyone who met the new owner – Alistair’s oldest son Walter - described him as the perfect mortician, compassionate and caring. But only Walter knew the blood red reality of the company accounts. The Long Islanders had started using soap, the roads were getting paved and even the immigrants seemed healthier. People simply didn’t die at the rate they used to. Walter, being a practical man, realized he had to make his own customers. Soon he had formed a band of nighttime gravediggers who would raid fresh graves and dump the corpses from a row boat in the narrow channels south of Oceanside. For years, the local police wondered about the numerous dead bodies that washed ashore on Parsonage Island and The East Channel Islands. But since they were impossible to identify and apparently missed by no-one the police quietly closed the case. Walter Smythe died a rich man, famed for his abilities with a row boat. A model citizen, and a much respected mortician.

4.1 Bottle at home in Hackney - sourced from online. Pours black-brown with a small, creamy beige head. Classically styled impy stout, has some good ashy roast, bitter black coffee, dark chocolate, a little scorched earth, some brownies, raisins. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation, somewhat velvety texture. Lightly warming finish, more baking cocoa, bitter coffee, dried berries, some torched marshmallows. nice depth. Seems simple at first sip but the complexity grows as you work through it. Some smokiness comes out in the later rounds. Overall, great stuff.
4.6 Bottle, 0.50l. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate with earthy note. Pours almost black color with thin quickly diminishing light brown head and sparkling appearance. Taste starts with moderate sweet and rich roasted malt, chocolate and coffee, follows by licorice, alcohol, smoke and wood with earthy note, mouthfeel is warm and spicy, while finish is moderate grassy bitter. Full body, thick creamy texture and carbonation in palate. Obituary for Coronavirus...

3.8 Bottle from Systembolagets beställningssortiment. Big brown head. Very dark color. Distinct coffee aroma blended with dark roasted malt. Coffee and a robust malty taste that make it smooth with just a touch of sweetness. Medium bitterness and a nice beer to sip on cold days ( but I enjoyed it on one of the first days of spring as well).

Taste is bitter, roasty dark malty and bitter hoppy, slightly chocolately, metallic, minimally fruity, a touch of blackberry; late developing notes of coffee. 3.7 500 ml bottle, batch #1730, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 10.5%. Pitch black colour, moderate tan head. Aroma of roast malts, coffee and dark chocolate, a hint of smoke. Sweet flavour, notes of caramel, molasses, alcohol, roast malts, coffee and smoke. Moderate bittering hops. A tad too sweet for me, but not a bad beer.

3.8 Aromat czekolady, kawy, melano, palonego cukru, orzechów, suszonych owoców oraz alkoholu. Nieco utleniony. Barwa czarna, nieprzejrzysta. Piana beżowa, drobno pęcherzykowa, obfita i względnie trwała. Smak umiarkowanie słodki, złamany lekką kwaskowoscią. Dominuje kawa, czekolada gorzka, melano, paloność, trochę suszonych owoców i alkohol. W miarę zgrabnie połączone. Goryczka slodowo -chmielowa, powyżej średniej, ale przyjemna. Pełnia wysoka, wysycenie umiarkowane i kwaskowy, wytrawny finisz z nutą alkoholową. Niezłe, choć czuć już trochę upływ czasu.
