Amager Batch One

Amager Batch One

Bitterhed: 80+ IBU

English: With this special brew, Batch One, we dared to experiment with combining our usual devotion to a solid malt profile with the addition of American aroma hops. Batch One is an American-inspired Ale characterized by its vast, full body and generous use of hops. In the glass, it has a reddish-brown colour with a coppery glow, and a beige-coloured head leaves a nice lacing behind. For this brew we have chosen to only use the noble Simcoe hop, both for boiling and the following dry-hopping. The hops give the beer its fresh citrus-like character and impart a solid bitterness to balance the sweet caramel malt.

3.8 says barelywine right on the bottle, so I’m not sure why this is classed in the catch all strong ale category. It’s almost a classic barleywine. Malty, fruity, caramel, toffee...got the ruby tinge down. Then there’s the hops. A sh-- ton of simcoe. So much you can see them, though I’m willing to bet this had some age on it. interesting addition, adds complexity and some bitterness, citrus peel. Not sure if it’d have been better without the dry hopping or not, though. Good brew."
3.8 Pear/red apple aromas. light, hazy copper color. strong sweet upfront, grapefruit finish. finish is bitter. good beer overall but not a barley wine as advertised.
3.4 Pours a very hazy brownish red with a small head and some lacing on the glass. The aroma is brandy & toffee... it’s sweet & rich and then also sort of floral. The flavor offers some neat tobacco, apple, wood, & plenty of caramel. It’s ashy, sweet, and weird... but sort of delightfully weird. It’s defiantly got some hop forward flavors, but mydude that shared it with me aged it... the bottle said barleywine, and well... it does taste like one wherein the hops have fallen off significantly. It’s a pretty boozy beer too. So yeah, that’s Amager Batch One.
3.8 500ml bottle, shared with friends over a game of Catan. Mostly hazy pinkish reddish grapefruit like appearance. Thin khaki head. Plenty dots and ropes of lace. Looks pretty good overall. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of creamy, light carbonation. Good full body. Easy to sip. Nose is a little metallic, but flavor is very nice and rich. Dark fruit, good earthy hop. Caramel malt. Hint of citrus. A bit more bitter and hoppy than the typical barleywine, especially for a euro barleywine. It’s labeled barleywine, but definitely does taste more like an american strong. Big bitterness, light sweet, just a very pleasant light bite. Tasty, easy to sip stuff. Pleasant hop character. Good rich malt, but not too sweet. Nice, unique assertive stuff. Better than expected.
3.8 Rated on 7-10-2009 (Bottle) This beer forms a small smooth off-white head that mostly diminished, cloudy orange brown body and one ring of lacing. The Aroma is caramel malt, earthy hops and sweet. The Taste is sweet, bitter, caramel malt, earthy hops, grapefruit and boozy. The Palate is tingly and this beer is medium-full bodied. Overall, this is a very tasty beer, a sipping beer, worth trying, and a beer I would drink again if it came my way.
3.8 I’m tired of trying to write like a critic. Everything about this brew is solid - nice pour, good color, sweet aroma, and a taste that’s a lot like a porter or thin coffee stout.
3.4 NIce but with this dannish marked hoppyness. Had it at World of beer Orlando close to UCF.
3.7 Bottle from 16 Tons Taphouse, Eugene. Pours a very dark reddish brown. Little to no head. Aroma amazing. Raisins, rum, nuttiness, cookie dough. Body lively, finish very boozy, rye-like overtones. Delicious.
3.4 11/21/2010: Amager Batch One (Danish Barleywine Ale)... Aroma: Malty and fruity - smells a bit like a Scotch Ale. Appearance: Amber-brown color. Flavor: Aged hops, strange bitterness (bitterness is pretty high); fuirty malt and sugary caramel; plum, dried fruits, raisin. Palate: Medium body; smooth texture. Overall: Good! 1 pt. 0.9 fl. oz. bottle (9.2% Alc/Vol) shared by alexsdad06. Thanks Brad! Rating #312 for this beer.
3.5 On tap @ Henrik. This is a blurry reddish copper colored one with a nice really creamy - almost nitro creamy off-white top. Smells really sweet, malty and nice. Light nutty also with dark candied sugar, wood syrup and some red berries. I like this aroma. It’s quite nutty in the flavor. No, make that really nutty. Almost a bit like Nutella. Soft really creamy smooth mouthfeel with a soft prickling carbonation level. A bit sweet at first, almost soapy, fruity with red ripe berries. Some nice gentle traces of alcohol in the finish and aftertaste. 05.07.2013
3.6 Bottle (500 ml). 1+ year old. Hazy amber with a small off-white head and little lacing. Aroma is of malt, caramel, spices, boozy notes, light fruity notes... there’s also a lot of resinous hops, they are fainted but still there. Taste is moderately sweet with caramel, malt, alcohol, fruits, wood, spices, resinous notes and light bitterness. Warming alcohol and spices. Medium body. Low to moderate carbonation. Good Barley Wine. Not extremely complex and a bit hot, but well balanced. Malty, but not overly sweet. Drinkable for the style.
3.7 On tap at Henrik, Bergen. The colour is hazy dark reddish amber with a creamy light beige medium head. Sweet aroma of fruity hops, peach and berries. More fruity hops in the flavour with some grapefruit. Still pretty sweet. Has a slick and rich mouth feel, and a medium bitterness. Is a balanced and nice ale.
3.6 Bottle. Poured amber with a frothy beige head that settled to a ring. Aromas of dark fruit and brown sugar. The flavor found dark fruit and burnt malts. Medium body, sweet, and a light alcohol aftertaste.
3.4 On tap at Henrik, Bergen. Deep hazy amber body, small white head. Aroma is nutty caramel, syrup, herbs, hints of birch wood and wet grass. Taste is bitter grassy tones, caramel, burnt sugar, hints of grapefruit and pine. Medium to full body, medium to soft carbonation. Pretty OK.
4.0 Pours a hazy amber-brown with a thick off white head. This one is definitly English style with a heavy malt aroma, a little age, & some savory spice components. Maybe a little yeast, too. Taste is milk chocolate malts that really come out in the mid palate. There’s a peppery bite throughout and a bitter finish. This one is very comfortable.
3.7 Sample at the Aficionado’s "Hidden Gems" beer tasting on 05/24/2013: Pours a reddish-amber color with a medium thick creamy light beige head that diminishes slowly. Sticky rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malt, nutmeg and citrus. Medium to full body with flavors of bready malt, ripe fruit, spice and resiny hops. The finish is fruity and malty. Above average overall.
3.1 550 ml bottle purchased @ Julio’s Liquors back in December 2012. Dark muddy red/ brown color. Aroma is sweet and very malty with noticeable Simcoe pine. Taste was actually much like the nose, tons of caramel malt and a sharp hop edge created from the Simcoe. Strong notes of pine with a resinous kick of bitterness. Taste is medium to full bodied, balanced carbonation. I feel the hops really dominated the malt and the resin is a bit harsh. Had I let it get more age, perhaps the hops to malt ratio would balance better. Right now a bit harsh.
3.8 Bouteille 500ml.
3.7 Bottle courtesy of Deanso. Poured a dark chesnut brown with a thick off white head. The aroma is rich, fruity and alcoholic. The flavour is big fruity, alcoholic bitter, The alcohol dominates, but its not overpowering. It’s a lovely heart warming beer. Well worth tracking down.
3.3 Thin head of varying sized bubbles that does not last long. Strong caramel and cherry aroma with some brown sugar, roasted grains and some earthy aromas. Color is a dark copper brown. Rather strong bitterness and bite to this brew. Dried flowers, straw, tea leaves, piney hops, dry toasted malts and some more brown sugar. Body is much thinner than I expected, pretty much too thin as it doesn’t really have any malt body to offet the alcohol and bitterness. Noticable alcohol presence and warming. Little astringent palate which leaves a dry and chalky mouthfeel. Finishes hot and dry. Ok brew but not digging this too much.
3.7 Bottle from Haskell’s only $5.99! Pours red amber and hazy with a sudsy frothy head that slowly settles to film and lacing. Aroma has nice caramel malt and hops blended well. Taste has decent dry dusty hops which show a little bitterness and then the caramel malts take hold and blend well. Palate is medium sticky and chalky. Enjoyable!
3.6 Bottle at home. 2011 Vintage. Pour is murky cola with a small white head that quickly dissipated; decent lacing. Aroma is big sweet fruits, licorice, strawberries, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and a touch of bourbon. Taste is big raisins, figs, toffee, caramel, light roast, a touch of grapefruit, candi sugar, and orange peel with a light bitter finish. Sticky/creamy mouthfeel with high carbonation. Above average barley wine, but nothing that will blow you away.
3.6 From a 50 cl bottle. Pours a hazy brown with an off white head. Aroma of caramel and fruity hops. Notes of toffee with a hoppy bitterness.. Nice.
2.6 Bottled. Off-dry, medium to full bodied, high bitterness. Malty, hoppy taste, lightly sour, quite yeasty. The alcohol is very pronounced, this beer is not very balanced. (2009-09-25)
4.0 16.9oz bottle, aged the better part of a year in my closet. Unfiltered brown-red color, oily off-white head, some soapy edges. Assumably the hops have faded a little, which is unfortunate. There is some mild earthy bitterness, but way more rich caramel, bourbon candy like boozy sweetness. While it does have the rich resinous hoppy feel of a good US Barleywine, there are also mellow, malty fruity ale tones not unlike an Old Ale. Significantly thicker and deeper in color as i poured out the second half of the bottle, giving it a creamier, yeastier mouthfeel. Quite a nice Barleywine!
3.3 Rich amber color with a shallow froth. Good lacing. Faint aromas of sweet malt yet defined briskness. Full nectar with good carbonation. Silky texture, balanced flavor with a bit of heat, mildly sweet with a bitter hop finish.
3.6 Bottle from AJ’s Arcadia. I’d classify this more of a barleywine style. Good hoppy, caramely, sweet nose. Tastes similarly- sweet, syrupy malts balanced with a big, citrusy, hop kick. As good as any American strong or barleywine here in the states, but lacking in complexity. Good overall, though.
3.9 Draught at Ørsted Ølbar. Orange colour with an off-white head. Aroma and flavour of caramel, fruit, hops and malt.
4.2 Nice amber red color, slight citrus armoas. Very sweet caramel taste, followed by bitter hops. Very nice balance, you don't really notice the 9.2 abv. Small pint on tap at Lord Nelson/Copenhagen.
3.7 Red color with a thick beige head. Aroma of citrus hops and fruit. Flavor of citrus hops, tangy fruits, and sweet malts, medium body, slick feel, average carbonation, finish is long and hoppy, but not strong. Ok.
