Amager / Cellarmaker The Dank Dane

Amager / Cellarmaker The Dank Dane

"Dank as a Dane" is said to be local slang for the exceptionally sweaty and smelly young Danish backpackers that you will see touring the Bay Area - and San Francisco in particular. Riding a BART, chasing street cars, gasping their way up hilly boulevards, insisting to jog the Golden Gate or climbing prison islands. You know the drill…
However, modern day hipster backpackers are also said to be fond of their hoppy beers which is why they may theoretically end up with a very exhausted look on their faces while enjoying a huge glass of quenching IPA at San Francisco’s by far coolest, new brewpub, Cellarmaker.
This spring we had the pleasure of a brewing visit from Tim Sciascia and Connor Casey of Cellarmaker fame. The collaboration beer we brewed we tried to keep in the tradition that has gained Cellarmaker a reputation for being one of California’s finest new breweries: lots of hops yes, but subtle, delicate, balanced and highly drinkable. We hope that you’ll find "The Dank Dane" to be exactly that.

4.3 Outstanding! This IPA pours a golden amber hue with sticky lacing. Aroma of mango and pineapple on the nose and the same taste on the palate. Such a nice long lingering bitterness that satisfies immeasurably. I am so bummed out to know as soon as I discovered this Gem that it is being retired. I hit the Beer Menu to find out what was left in my area and scooped up another 7 bottles.
4.4 Dank power! Very very dank, grassy and tropixal, Sweet citrus fruits, rye, wheat and crisp. Very refreshing, balanced and complex. Loved it!
3.3 A bit to much butter and overripe fruits in this one. Hazy deep golden color with a fine thick white head. Good lacing. Ok intensity in the aroma. Medium (+) body and a soft carbonation. A bit unbalanced sweetness vs bitterness. Oily texture. A bit buttery, grapefruit hoppy, pine and overripe tropical flavor. [On tap at Crowbar in Oslo, Norway]
3.5 On tap. Hazy orange small white head. Malt and caramel aroma, tropical fruits and rye. Sweet cereal flavour, tropical fruity bitter finish
3.7 Citrus and rye aroma. Copper colou, low head. Rye and malt taste. Long bitter aftertaste in throat and pleasant bitter taste on tongue at first. Overall, would definitely drink it again
3.0 Draft sampled at As Is NYC with Linh. Pours a bright amber orange body with thin white lace. Nose is total malt domination with some soft spices and sugar. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with not much going on outside of the malt character. [[[Assuming this one is old so it will surely deserve a revisit under fresher circumstances.]]]
3.6 500 ml bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip. Clear golden orange with a finger of off-white head. Aromas of rye, toasty notes, citrus, caramel. Tastes of citrus, tropical and stone fruit, rye spice, malt, some wheat. Medium body with a dry finish. Okay, a bit on the malty/sweet side of IPAs.
3.8 50cl bottle @El Lúpulo Feroz, Oviedo. 01-09-2015. BBD: 07-2016, Batch: 1098. In short: hoppy fruity wheat ale. Pours hazy-murky deep gol with frothy white head. Moderate head retention, some lacing. Citrusy, tropical fruits nose. Medium body, average carbonation, crispy texture. Taste is fruity tropical, citrusy, moderate bitter, some slick mouthfeel, dry aftertaste. Enjoyable.
3.7 draught@Lausanne Beer Celebration - hazy amber-orange beer with a decent head retention; fairly hoppy with notes of pine and citrus; medium- to full-bodied, quite astringent and bitter; long hoppy finish of tropical fruits
3.6 On tap at the mikkeller bar, San Francisco. A clear Amber beer with a small white head. Very aromatic, citrusy, lots of American aroma hops. Taste slightly hoppy (I was expecting more hopiness after the strong aroma) and malty, sweet. Very drinkable beer
4.0 August 6, 2015. On tap at Brewdog, Gothenburg. Cloudy golden with a small white head. Aroma is fruity and hoppy with tangerine, peach, pine, grass, some spicy rye notes, sweet toffee. Taste is medium sweet with apricots, peach, tangerine, some biscuit notes, light hoppy bitterness with some pine and grass, light dry finish with some herbal and spicy rye notes. Medium bodied, average carbonation.
3.7 0,5l Bottle. Apperance: Clear orange golden with a average sized white head. S Aroma: wheat, spicy rye, citrus hjops, grass and pine. Taste: rye pine, grapefruit, citrus grass, herbal tones. Given it a spicey rye fruity bitterness, moderate sweet.. Medium body and carbonation. A bit rougher in the palate as hat you normally expect from Amager.
3.7 Tap@ville&vilja. Hazy amber color with fluffy white head. Aroma has grass, rye and grapefruit. Taste is malty with long bitter aftertaste. Flavors of rye, pine, grapefruit and some spiciness. Nice smooth mouth feeling and excellent drinkability.
3.7 Pours clear copper. Aroma is nice and hoppy, nice traditional ipa aroma, pine and grass. Taate is hoppy, slightly fruity. Its lacking a little malt balance, but nice.
4.3 Great and hoppy aroma, full of citrus, grapefruit and tones of strawberry. Pours golden, big white head. Bitter flavour, I taste grapefruit and lemon grass. Medium body, average carbonation and a long after taste. Fabulous beer.
3.1 Big white head. Clear brown body with little floaties. Fruity wooden gooseberry aroma with grape skin and raisin notes. Sweetish fruity wooden grape seed taste with toffee notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, mealy mouthfeel, slightly flat. Dry orangey wooden aftertaste with apple and grape seed notes. Nice, drinkable, perhaps a bit sharp. (0.5l bottle, from Fish & Beer, Copenhagen.)
3.6 Copenhagen 24/4 2016. 50 cl bottle from Gunnar Madsen Vinhandel. Some sort of giant backpacker with hops for a beard working hard on destroying the Golden Gate on the label. Pours hazy golden amber with yellowish head. A little lacing. Settles as thin layer of foam. Aroma is not as distinct as many other IPAs from Amager. Pleasant enough. Exotic fruit - a little subdued - with some bitter sour citric notes. Some fermented fruit rummaging in the background. Aroma gets stronger as the beer gets warmer. Medium carbonation and watery palate. Taste is lightly sweet followed by a good and distinct bitterness that lingers in the aftertaste. Semi dry finish. Quite nice. Now I can use the expression "Dank as a Dane" with a clear conscience.

3.5 Tap at DeWildeman, 12th May 16. Aroma is a little muted, some malt, slight hop. Taste is more malt forward, the hops are there and it’s a good drink, but not my style of IPA
2.9 Tap @ Christian 4tal Pale Ale Festival 2016, Odense. Pours hazy golden with a white head. Toffee and dark fruit. Thick caramel and a whiff of dusty citrus hops. Giant diappointment!
