Amager Danish Beerhouse Barrel Aged Series Old Man's Ale

English: Forget what you think beer is all about when being warmed by this Old Ale. Forget the lack of carbon dioxide and the warm notes of wood and matured fruit require that this Old Man’s Ale is to be enjoyed in peaceful surroundings – preferably in front of the fireplace served in a big cognac glass. Old Man’s Ale has aged for four months on calvados barrels from one of the most prominent French producers; Domaine Familial Louis Dupont, and the wood grant soft tones of vanilla while the American Chinook hops add sufficient bitterness in order to balance the high malt sweetness and the significant and warming alcohol. Old Man’s Ale is indeed a beer for the quite and thoughtful moments – the cognac of beers.

3.4 Campground Throwdown 2, 25cl bottle, thanks miver. MInimal off-white head atop hazy dark amber body. Aroma is moderately sweet, vinous, some Bourbon, light caramel. Taste is moderately sweet, vinous, some Bourbon, light raisin, caramel. Sticky full body, minimal carbonation.
3.4 Bottled 250ml. -Courtesy of and great thx to Papsoe for sending me a bunch of Amager beers to celebrate my 5K milestone. Brown coloured, minimal white head, dry wood nose. Heavy dried fruits, caramel and strong wood presence with sharp notes of alcohol. Good one but really nothing more than good.
3.7 12/05/2013 250ml bottle (#1696, BB 2020), thanks Jesperhammer! Ambrata intensa, riflessi miele, schiuma virtualmente assente.
3.8 Found this little goodie in the cellar - had forgotten everything about it. Nice discovery. A dark brown pour with No head what so ever. Almost looks like a coke. The aroma is huge and very complex dominated of sweet notes. You sense apples and wooden notes on top of a rush of brown sugar. Some chocolate and a hint of tobacco too. Due to No carbonation you also get a palate that a rather watery with a little picking feeling from the alcohol. The taste is nicely balanced between sweet and bitter notes with the warm alcohol feeling in the end. Chocolate and oranges, the apples from the calvaen barrels comes out. Lovely balanced after taste where the alcohol not gets too dominating, but is gently followed by a malty sweetness and a low key bitterness. Truely a winter warmer
3.4 25cl bottle. Courtesy of Papsoe. Strong liquor and wood aromas. Medium body, soft carbonation, oily texture. Taste is liquor, some malty, kind of sweet. Nice one.
3.5 Bottled. A hazy dark red-brown beer with a thin tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, bread, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, bread, caramel, bread, and wood, leading to a dry finish.
2.8 It smells like wet wood and that is somehow the best from this beer. It’s almost red and has a minimum of head. The taste is unfortunately dominated by the high alcohol together with an sour flavour.
3.5 25 cl. bottle. Pours murky brown, but I have to admit that I didn’t pay attention and got most of the sediment poured into my glass too. :-/ Absolutely no head...and I tried. Aroma of malt, wood, caramel, vanilla and alcohol. Thick thick mouthfeel and a flavour much like the aroma but also of fruits, sugar and calvados from the barrels. Overall very complex. Taste is sweet with a dry aftertaste. Pretty good, I wish I could get some more.
3.8 Weicher Beginn, der Alkoholgehalt ist in keinem Teil erschmeckbar. Vanille, Holz, dezent fruchtig. Vollmundig, kurzzeitig brennend. Rund, ausgewogen, etwas oxidiert. Gut! 8/12/12/12/12/12
3.4 Bottle. No head. Color is hazy brown. Aroma and taste are fruits wood, alcohol, wine and malt.
3.9 Bottle @ home....It pours murky brown with no head.......The aroma is alcohol, dark fruits, wood, vanilla and caramel.....The flavor is dark fruits, wood, caramel, vanilla and some alcohol...... nice ....
3.7 33cl bottle shared courtesy of Kermis Thin white head. Hazy amberpour. Smooth woody alcohol aftertaste. Yummy ;-)
3.7 Bottle courtesy of Kermis. Murky brown pour, big intense aroma. Huge oaky bourbon rich flavour. A yummy (copyright) ale!
4.0 Bottle shared. Pours cloudy brown with a small tan head. Aroma of boubon, vanilla, roasted malt, molasses. Flavour is heavy sweet and light bitter. Full bodied with soft carbonation.
3.5 24th October 2009 Cloudy dark brown beer. Frothy pale biscuit coloured head. Softish semi dry palate. Rich malt, a little barleywine like. A glimmer of Port Wine. Dry wood with slightly bitter bourbon. Finishes with aniseed alcohol. 19th July 2020 Clear deep amber beer, a few lonely tan bubbles. Palate is fairly dry and has modest fine carbonation. 8 years on, this old ale still has some alcoholic teeth, spice and warmth. Wet wood and cognac with very ripe fruits. Touch of bourbon. Finishes warming and spicy. Would tolerate a few more years yet. 14th September 2023 Clear amber beer, a few tan bubbles. Palate is soft, slightly viscous, just a touch of carbonation left. Caramel malts, some ripe fruits, little chocolate on the end. Getting tired but still quite tasty. Think this bottle might have been compromised as the cap was pretty loose.
3.0 (25 cl bottle #1926; Batch 86; BBD: 2020) Pours a clear dark brown with minuscle, off-white head. Aroma is dominated by the barrel ageing with prominent notes of what seems like bourbon barrel but might as well be calvados. Watery on the palate, flat with a full body and a warming finish. Flavour has notes like the aroma with wood and raisin sweetness being the dominant notes here. For a 14% beer the alcohol is nicely subdued - perhaps because of the aging? Altogethre pleasant but maybe too reliant on the calvados for its profile.
4.4 Bottled at home, approximately 2 years old. Clear amber/mahogany colored, no head nor carbonation whatsoever. Fruity and alcoholic nose, predominantly apple but also raisin, lots of malts, wood, vanilla, obviously aged, very complex. Sweet malty and very complex flavor, vanilla, fruity notes more to the background, age even more apparent than in aroma (pred. wood), quite alcoholic, very longlasting and developing bittersweet finish. This tastes like an aged British barley wine, with an additional touch of cognac. This bottle has been gathering dust for two years, and now that i’ve finally decided to taste it it’s retired. Too bad, this is a world class brew.
3.7 (Draught) Pours amber red to brown. The aroma is sweet apple fruity with some soft woodsy notes. Sweetish malt and soft hops. Undertones of vanilla, caramel, sugar and dried fruits. The flavour holds apples, dried fruits, vanilla-driven/woodsy oak, sugar, sweet caramel malt and a balanced and bitter hop profile. Warming alcohol with a light fiery sting. The mouthfeel is surprisingly slim and bit sticky. Dried fruits and caramel on the finish. Medium bodied.
3.0 Pour deep, muddy, hazy dark amber/mahogany, with no head at all. Big aroma of alcoholic prunes or dates. Vanilla, leather, dirt? cookie dough? And of course the barrel, givin’ some heat and some edge. The taste is really sweet, but have some sharp bitterness comming through at the end. Medium and oily body, with a very, very flat carb. Really vinous, and less beer(ish).
3.4 Name: Old Man’s Ale Date: July 30, 2010 Mode: Bottle Source: Tasting, Cellar Party Appearance: cloudy dark amber, scant head, viscous Aroma: sweet caramel aroma, bourbon and vanilla sweetness Flavor: sweet caramel flavor, candy sweetness, touch of bourbon, lots of vanilla Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 7/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 14/20 Rating: 3.4/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: *** /4
3.5 bottle thanks to bu11zeye. poured amber with an off white head. aroma and flavor were brown sugar, caramel, and raisin. body was light and had a slick feeling to it.
4.2 Bottle: Batch #86 Bottle No. 2129:  Small to medium off white to light yellow ish head that disappears quick. Dark murky amber colored beer. Smell strong and good malts, liquor like whiskey, light liquorice. Like a good barrel aged barley wine. Good smell. Taste vanilla, grains, light liquorice, malts, caramel, whiskey ish, spices, oak, wood, some sweets as in a whiskey like vanilla but more bitter. Good full bodied. Strong malty light alcoholic and bitter spicy herby (grass and leaves) aftertaste. Low to medium carbo, soft mouthfeel, full body and a creamy texture.
3.4 Batch 86. Bottle #1221. Best Before 2020. Appearance: Pours a medium brown body, obscured by cloudiness and layered with a thin head comprised of rather large bubbles. Smell: A nose smelling of cherries (sweet), orange blossom honey, dark caramel, a light earthiness, a trace of rustic bread dunked in brandy, and tired, old wooden barrels ready to be halved and converted into tomato planters. Taste: A sweet start with a taste of caramel maltiness, also some bready malts along with a bready yeastiness. Hint of florals, fruitiness. I’ve been informed it was aged in apple brand barrels, but I’m getting more of an off-brand Grand Marnier kick. A generous splash of Gammel Dansk. Earthy, tattered bitterness. Firm wood character. Has a chalky, slurry yeast vibe on the sweetish, warm finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Very low carbonation. A tad chalky when the sear from the alcoholic heat isn’t occurring. Overall: It’s different, it’s almost decent, but definitely not a favorite of mine.
3.4 Bottle 250ml (Batch #86 Bottle #155) @ home Pours dark reddish brown with no head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, alcohol and wood. Taste is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with a smooth alcohol finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is flat.
3.3 Apple/cognac aroma. No carbonation. Taste of prunes, calvados, raisins Cognac. Strong alcohol aftertaste.
3.6 Orange brownish coloured beer. No head... I know... forget the lack stands at the description... I cant. All beers are rated by the same standard. Liquorish, good warming. A bit nutty, earthy. Caramel, prunes. Decent for sure. Good sweetness, moderated bitterness.
3.5 Bottle @ home, tfs vaiz! Aroma is alcohol, wood, caramel, basement, bit like an aged belgian with extra strength and a touch os hospital. Flavour is liquorice (dutch en regular), raisin, plum, wood, basement, faint iodine, spices. Intense. Flavours lingers on as alcohol burn fades away. Intense sipper.
3.7 Bottle. Murky brown pour, thin off-white head. Aroma is aged malts, vanilla, alcohol, leather, licorice, spices and bready yeast. Very complex and intense brew. Quite unique and definitely a sipper. Nice.
3.2 The beer scored quite average. The colour was very nice though. The mouthfeel is really flat and a bit watery.
2.5 Very dark color. Beer is completely dead, absolutely no carbonation at all. Tastes something like jagermeister, but with a very moderate smell and watery taste.
