Amager / Goose Island Rye King

Amager / Goose Island Rye King

Malts: Pilsner, Crystal, Smoked Malt, Black, Roasted Barley, Chocolate, Rye, Cara-Rye
Hops: Columbus, Centennial
Yeast: SafAle US-05
20,00 Plato

Note: First batches were brewed with oats and Northern Brewer hops.

4.2 Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of quite roasted and spicy slightly caramelly malt, some chocolate, as well as hints of dark fruit, licorice, tobacco and ash. Taste is an excellent balance of quite roasted and spicy, slightly caramelly malt, some chocolate and dark fruit, with notes of raisin and fig, licorice, tobacco, as well as hints of ash and herbal, bitter hops. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some roasted, spicy malt, chocolate, licorice and bitter hops lingerin in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and medium carbonation. I think that this truly makes for a great Rye Stout that has everything that I look for in the style, being quite dry, roasted, spicy and bitter, while hints of caramel sweetness and dark fruits provide some balance here and notes of licorice, tobacco and ash add depth and character to this. Overall, this certainly makes for a quite rich and well-balanced Rye Stout with some great smoky and bitter accents, as well as a great, full body and mouthfeel.
3.8 Bottle from Alko. Pitch black. Char, licorice, oatmeal and rye. Char, chocolate, vanilla, rye, a hint of booze. Slick, grainy, smooth. A nice taste and a superb palate for a stout.
4.0 (Bottle, 0.33 l - batch 2644 - BBE 01/2025, from Alko, 20220211) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had burnt malts, dark chocolate, sweet rye bread and ash. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, dark chocolate, sweet rye bread, grass, earth and bitterness. Aftertaste had burnt malts, earth and bitterness. A delicious and balanced burnt brew without any gimmicks.
3.9 0,33l bottle from Alko Ruoholahti, enjoyed @ home. Pours very dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is sweet roasted malts with some chocolate. Flavor is sweet roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, hops. Good.
3.7 Bottled 330ml as "Amager Rye King" (Alko Web) Opaque colour, small brownish head. Toasted, a bit sweet, even ryeish aroma. Perhaps a bit of smoke? Medium to full-bodied. Slick oily palate. Toasted, coffeish, some spicey ryeish notes, some sweetness. Malty and balanced.
3.8 33cl bottle from Alko. Batch 2645. Poured pitch black with espresso head. Lovely espresso flavors. Notes of rye and some wood. Medium bodied. Pleasantly dry.
3.8 A black beer, a head is medium and brown. Aroma has liquorice, salt liquorice, some roastiness and dried fruits. Taste is strong, roastinesss, some coffee and liquorice, bitterness, caramel, pine, light smoke. Medium+ bodied. Harsness of rye, light smokyness. Very nice.
3.7 33 cl, bottled. Batch 2644, best before 01/2025. Pours black with a small tanned head. Aroma: Roasted malt, licorice. Cocoa. Taste: Mildly sweet, some roasted bitterness. Coffee. Notes of acidity. Dark chocolate. Hints of vanilla and some spices. Palate: Medium body, average carbonation. Pleasant stout.
3.8 Smell of roasted malt. Black colour, dark brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, ash, chocolate, some rye bread. Lively carbon. Medium bitter, lightly sweet.
3.6 Canned 440ml. -at Goblet Zagreb. Black coloured, medium sized brownish head, roasted malt and rye in the nose. The tate is almost the same; roasted malt, rye, caramel and some dark chocolate with dry roasty finish.
4.0 Copenhagen 25/7 202. 44 cl can from Meny, Borups Allé, Frb. F. Simon Daugaard drawing of a quite grumpy Rye-King on the can. Pours opaque, dark brown with a mid-sized, dark beige head. Settles as 0,3 cm thick but frothy layer of foam just covering the surface of the beer. Rawling up the side of the glass. Substantial lacing. Aroma is intense with a dark, roasted sweet odor mingling with some subtle citric notes. Earthy touch. Dark roasted malts, tobacco, leather. Molasses, brown sugar. Light notes of smoked peat. Light carbonation. Medium thick, slightly viscous, oily, soft, smooth texture. Lightly tingling. Flavor is fairly intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a slightly stronger bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and potent with a dry bitter undertone. Lingering. Finish is dry. Wholesome and potent. So potent I hardly notice the Rye. But a very fine Stout. No need for the Rye King to be so grumpy.
3.3 Last one... Smell- medium strong, malt, dark chocolate. Foam- thin to medium-thick, roasty, malty. Head is medium-sized to large, dark brown color. Sticks a bit. Appearance- amager as usual amazing label and story. Black color, few carbonation bubbles. From- stout glass Taste - malty, some roast, dark chocolate, thick feeling. Quite good.
3.9 500ml bottle. In the cellar for about 18 months. Pours black with a thin dark mocha cap, and clearly has some serious body coming out of the bottle. Glug. The nose is HUGE molasses up front, dark roasty malts, dark fruits underneath, but really, it's a WHOLE lot of molasses. Full bodied with expected sweetness, molasses, a apparent mineral note, espresso and dark malts that leads into surprisingly dry bitter dark coffee notes that take it out to the finish. This is a serious beast. Not my favourite flavour profile, but this is clearly a well made beer.
4.3 50 cl bottle, batch #1465. The pour is gloopy, thick and dense, jet black, thick chocolate mocca colored head. Aroma is dark chocolate, toffee and a touch of alcohol. Mouthfeel is wonderful, thick and well carbonated. Flavours of dark bitter chocolate, dark roasted malts, char, pipe tobacco, leather, you name it... Long aftertaste, unfortunately with an alcohol presence. It's not my perfect Stout, but pretty close :-)
3.8 Fad: Sortbrun stout farve med et fint skumhoved. Duften er let brændt med en god del humle. Smagen er superlækker men der er entendens til at den bliver lidt for brændt ogtør hvilket rent hedonistisk trækkerlidt ned.
4.0 Lots of dried fruit, rich taste, leather, chockolate, hint of vanilla tobacco. Superb.
4.0 Shared bottle at Mi2 at Cardinal 25.03.19. Ebony. Brown head. Not much lacing. Fine aroma and taste of roasted malt, ash, tar, pine and burnt wood. Medium dry. Fine aftertaste.
4.4 Shared bottle at Cardinal, Stavanger. Pours black with beige head. Aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, smoke. Tastes slightly sweet with roasted bitterness. Medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel, roasted finish.
3.3 Tap. Pours Black with a tam head. Aroma is heavy heavy roast, ask, karamel, ash. Like licking an ash tray, some karamel, light sweetness. Salt licorie
4.4 500 ml. with no bottling date. Jet black brew has a half-inch disc of brown, sugary foam. Big aroma of soy, blackstrap molasses, rye bread and dark chocolate. Flavor opens with smoke and charred rye bread. Soy, blackstrap, semi-sweet chocolate, dark bread and a touch of merlot in the later tastes. Medium-heavy body has smooth low-medium carbonation and a great balance from many directions.
3.5 LCBO issue. One of the small amount of beers better cold than warm, with a thick pour and enough rye to make it interesting, shortly out of the fridge. Rather discontinuous enjoyment after that.
4.1 Bottle from the LCBO. Pitch black with a one finger dark brown head that fades slowly leaving tight lace. Nose has chocolate, coffee, molasses, smoke, rye, wood, light grass and floral notes. Flavour follows with a light+ sweet ,molasses and chocolate leading to a medium+ coffee and dark chocolate bitterness along with a touch of pepper. Smoke enhances without being distracting. Mouth is medium+ and creamy with soft carbonation. Nice winter sipper. 9/4/8+/4/16+
4.1 Bottle. Black color, brown head. Aroma has chocolate, roasted malts, some sweet notes, coffee. Smooth round roasty taste, chocolate, coffee. Hint of bitterness at the end.
3.7 A deep dark stout with a thick creamy lacing brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, licorice, alcohol warmth molasses, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, licorice, molasses, alcohol warmth, very nice and complex, still good at 3 years old.
3.7 [10233-20180308] Bottle. Chocolate roasted sweet floral taffy aroma. Black brown body with a medium-lasting foamy brown head. Roasted chocolatey floral malt flavour. Full body. Good. (7/3/7/4/15) 3.6 [12079B-20200306] Bottle. Roasted sweet wood grains aroma. Black brown body with a quick foamy tan head. Roasted sweet dry leaves flavour has a lingering sweet finish. Full body. Nice balance of roast and sweet without being overpowering. (8/3/8/4/15) 3.8 (c/o mds, w/ him, jercraigs) Overheard: "The hood counts but not the horns."
3.9 Bottle at home. Has a dark brown to black colour with a big beige head. Aroma of chocolate truffles, roasted malt, rye bread, coffee beans, burned wood and smoked meat. Well roasted and hoppy flavour with ash, grass, coffee and dark wood. Silky mouth feel, medium to full body and bitterness. Roasted and nice. The flavour has a bit harsh bitterness that makes it a bit unbalanced. Anyway, a powerful ale.
4.0 (choco-cara, ~vanille, attaque piquante, > amère-café, fin onctueuse, last ∞-amerc sec (rye), ∞-coriace)
4.7 500ml bottle from LCBO. Pours an opaque deep brown colour with two fingers of light brown lasting head. Aromas of chocolate, espresso, and some roasted malts. Taste matches the aroma with a peppery finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. High alcohol content concealed well. It's an excellent stout.
