Amager / Grassroots Shadow Pictures - Skyggebilleder

Editor’s Note: This version was brewed at Amager Bryghus and had its first appearance at Mikkeller’s Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2014.

NOT to be confused with the earlier version brewed at Hill Farmstead under the Grassroots label.

Da vi i juni 2013 besøgte New England var det derfor kun naturligt, at vi slog forbi Shauns gårdbryggeri Hill Farmstead – absolut in the middle of nowhere.

(Rating #6906)
2.5 Draught at Lord Hobo, 5/13/16. A new entry in the "How do beers like this get put on draught at a reputable bar?" series, the Shadow Pictures pours a muted bronze/brass with high clarity and a small white head showing moderate to moderately-low retention. In the nose there is some leafy, dusty, rather old orange rind and light pine, with crystal malt iced tea breaking through it easily and finishing on light, sugary white bread and paper/cardboard-like oxidation....While it’s not flawed and there’s no alcohol, it’s basically just some crystal malt and base malt with a smattering of stale, citrus/pine and oxidation.... The flavor shows even more oxidation, with medium-low bitterness at this point, absolutely no brightness or livliness and vanilla-biscuit-bread malt notes with caramel-orange lingering and tons of stale, papery-like character. Carbonation is ample and somewhat engaging, with a crystal malt-like "hardness" to the texture. Hard to believe someone would taste this and think it was ok to put on draught. Even for a malty barleywine, this is still in poor shape, much less considering this is supposed to be a DIPA....rather shameful. I always hate rating the beer in this situation, because it’s a comment on the distributor and/or the bar manager much more than the brewer, but there still needs to be accountability for this kind of behavior.
3.6 500ml bottle. Cloudy, orangey golden colour with average, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Intense, piney, resinous, citrusy and tropical fruity aroma, notes of grapefruit, lemon, mango, pineapple. Taste is initially moderately sweet pale malty and tropical fruity, notes of mango, orange, mandarine, later more and more bitter, thereby increasingly papery and chalky, the malty basis switches seemingly to bitter almond; bitter and sweaty tropical fruity finish. Exceeding bitterness.
3.6 Clear yellow-gold with medium white head. Aroma tropical fruits, yeast. Medium body with some carbonation, not much alcohol. Flavor is moderately bitter, citrus and tropical hop flavors with some yeast in the background. Not bad.

3.9 500ml bottle served in a regular glass. Enjoyed in a flat room in Hong Kong. Pours a cloudy orange color forming a medium creamy solid light yellow head with great retention and lots of lingering lacings formed and left in the glass. Sweet caramelish nose. Strong notes of grapefruit, zest, resin and pine. Sweet upfront taste. Strong notes of grapefruit in the mouth too. Pine and resin hops profile. Strong hops bittterness. Heavy full body. Medium carbonation. Caramel, lemon zest and grapefruit in the aftertaste. Great IIPA
3.4 a clear gold with a small lingering white head. Aromas of bread, grapefruit, earthiness, lemon zest and light pine. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of bread, grapefruit, pine and light earthiness with a smooth dry moderately bitter finish.
3.7 500ml bottle, from Dutch’s. Split with Chris R. Hazy orange color. With some swishing, it’s got a thin off-white head, and some ropes of lace. Nice citrusy, resiny hop here. Mild biscuity malt. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of creamy lighter carbonation. Nice fullness. Mild slick texture. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, light to moderate sweet. Has some of that yeasty kind of character that you see in a lot of DIPAs from Europe, but overall, pretty satisfying.
3.9 Bottle from systembolaget sweden. Big and lasting beige head. Clowdy golden color. Tropical fruity hop aroma. Very fresh fruity hop taste. Medium body and balanced bitterness.

3.9 Bottle. Tropical fruit nose, mango, grapefruit, great juicy fruit hops. A bit dank and tropical flavor, over-ripe mango, nice bitterness. A great juicy fruit bomb. Full and creamy.
3.6 Bottle. Yellow pour with a white head. Huge malty aromas. Big pine and malt aromas collide. Average body and mouthfeel.
3.8 500 mL bottle. Orange body. Smell has caramel malt. Tropical fruit. Light orange. Smells sweet like lactose? Tastes bright and tropical. Heavy orange. Immediately kicks in with a strong grapefruit and orange flavor. Sweet lactose flavor in the back end. Not sure where I’m getting the lactose. Creamy body. Medium heavy body. Nice.
3.2 Bottle... Pours mostly clear and golden with yellow highlights and no head. The aroma features restrained notes of tropical fruits, clover honey and spicy, peppery hops. Medium to full-bodied with adequate carbonation. The flavor is bitter and tannic. Finishes raspy and dry. Bottle courtesy of Alden Bing of Orchid Island Brewery!
3.3 500 ml bottle poured a clear gold with a small lingering white head. Aromas of bread, grapefruit, earthiness, lemon zest and light pine. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of bread, grapefruit, pine and light earthiness with a smooth dry moderately bitter finish.
Goryczka wysoka, albedowa. Alkohol mocno rozgrzewa, likierowy w odczuciu, fajny. Nagazowanie niskie do średniego. Takie wersje East Coast DIPA to ja rozumiem :)
3.5 No date on bottle bought at Cellar Craft Beer. Aroma: caramel, biscuit malt, grapefruits skin, herbacy. App: hazy pale, medium white head, ok retention, some lacing. Taste and palate: medium body, light sweetness, soft to moderate carbonation, moderate abrupt bitter finish. Overall: like the texture of this beer but the taste and aroma is way off for me. This is so lacking fruitiness. That?s unfortunate because the texture is pretty good.
4.1 50cl bottle at home. Somewhat hazy orange with a medium white soapy head. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation. Quite some bitterness with some fruity sweetness. Tropical fruits, pine, orange peel, spices and some grain. Great double IPA.
3.7 Bottle. Amber beer with a cream head. Dank grapefruit and light pine aroma with earth. Dank grapefruit flavor with pine and earthiness. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Dank grapefruit lingers with pine and earth.
4.0 Nice white head. Golden yellow colour. Sour berries and some vinegar in the aroma. Some tangerines and citruses at first. Some orange in middle. Spicy and hoppy taste in the end. Very well balanced, suprisingly light bodied, medium carbonated very good double IPA.
4.0 Bright orange pour from 22oz bottle from Hair of the Dog in Bangkok. Juicy tangy apricot flavor. Orange and tangerine notes. Great beer
4.4 Pours a beautiful medium amber with a one finger head and light lacing. Taste is tropical fruit with a hint of dankness. Very nicely done. Will certainly get more soon...
3.9 Botella. @El Lúpulo Feroz, Oviedo 12/12/2015. BBD:05/2016 Color amarillo, aroma frutal, sabor dulce, frutal, cuerpo alto, buena.
4.1 Bevuta in bottiglia allo sfuso di Torino. Bel colore. Allora. All’olfatto luppolo estremo. Veramente amara. Veramente buona per gli amanti del genere.
3.7 500ml bottle from Mikkeller webshop. Orangey amber colour, white foam head leaving alittle lacing and aroma of juicy orange hops. Taste is malt caramel and fruity citrus with grapefruit & pine hop bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry tangy bitter finish. Nicely drinkable.
4.2 Lightly opaque golden (8EBC) with a fine poring white head, viscous and excellent lacings. Toasted white bread aromas, orange, grapefruit, pineapple, bright toffee, pine/spruce, mango, papaya, sweet peach with faint notes of lime, lychee and passion fruit rounded by some peppery hunch. Very fine perlage, sliky-smooth with a pronounced yet elegant body. Up front tropical fruity light toffee sweetness developping a well balanced fruity, flowery hop bitterness which dries harmonically on the palate. Lasting impressive fruity finish. For so many hop sorts used an excellent balance and quaffable.
