Amager Hr. Papsø

Amager Hr. Papsø

A note from Papsoe: some bottles seem to develop excessive carbonation hence please chill well and open Hr. Papsø over the kitchen sink with a glass closeby!

Hr.

English: This beer is named after our good friend, Mr. Henrik Papsoe, who has reached 10,000 ratings this year at www.ratebeer.com. Mr. Papsoe reflects sweetness and those who have had the pleasure of meeting him have found to their cost that he is sweet, obliging, and solid, yet also complex. He is to be enjoyed in small quantities, but nevertheless his alcohol and generous nature is a delight to be warmed by. Even though Mr. Papsoe is soft, he can easily be aged. Due to long-time aging on barrels, Mr. Papsoe has notes of vanilla, bourbon, and wood. One of the ingredients is a special produced dark Muscovado syrup, which provides him with his full body and sweetness. If you have a sweet tooth that you happily fill with sweets, this beer is particularly well-suited. Well, actually we would claim that we have filled adult candy onto bottles.

3.0 Murky brown color with almost no head (once it stopped foaming out of the bottle). Intoxicating nose of rich pit fruit, bourbon barrel, oak and vanilla. The taste doesn’t seem to match the aroma. Brown sugar, wet card board, raisins and fruitcake, booze and vanilla and something metallic.
3.6 Bottle at the Croydonia Tasting, big thanks to Paul for sharing this retired number, 13/07/13. Batch #97. Dark mahogony/chestnut brown with a very thin beige head. Nose carries a good bourbon boozey whiff, woody notes, dark toffee, dark fruits, sugars, dates. Taste comprises brown sugar, dark pitted fruits, stewed prunes, dates, oaky bourbon notes. Full bodied, fine carbonation, dry finish with a little booze. Decent enough quad, the alcohol is kept well in check keeping this a most drinkable number.
3.3 This bottled brew from a rating party poured a head of no head clear colored bubbles that were fully diminished and left behind a no visible carbonation hazy brown colored body and no lacing. The mild aroma was old ale. The mouth feel was tingly at the start with a mellow finish with a mellow vinous aftertaste. The mild flavor contained notes of old ale and sweet. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.
3.8 Bottle at the Croydonia Tasting - East Croydon. Big thanks to Paul for this one. Vintage 2008. Pours mostly clear amber with a faint, white film head. Nose of dark bread and rich toffee. Big sweet flavor with molasses, dark bread, more toffee, light toast. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Moderately fizzy, too. Lightly warming finish with slightly aged dark malts, further molasses and toffee. Good stuff. Nicely balanced. Fairly decadent.
3.7 Bottle via trade, shared at Croydonia Tasting. It pours cloudy deep mahogany with a small beige head. The nose is smooth, vanilla, coconut, caramel, cocoa and earth. The taste is toast, caramel, wood, booze, vanilla, coconut, cake, ginger, marzipan and toffee. Full body and fine carbonation. Good depth of flavour and balance. Tasty stuff. Has aged gracefully.
4.0 Bottle bought in Copenhagen 2010. Muddy dark brown with a minimal head. A lot of barrel both in the aroma and taste. Also dried fruit, oak, vanilla and caramel. Not that much carbonation left. A great beer to sip. What a pity that I only bought one bottle.
4.0 @Gyllenbock. Stor söt smak och doft av Cognac. Trevlig len munnkänsla med mycket fin balans.
3.8 250ml Bottle - Darkbrown with red tinges and a small head. Leather, dried fruit, caramel and marzipan in the aroma. Rich, fruity and warming taste with raisind, marzipan, bourbon and caramel detected.
3.9 Bottle acquired via trade with KingCecil...have wanted to try this for a while and thankful I got the opportunity! Murky Oak Creek in color with lots of Sedona red, burnt tangerine, chestnut, and mahogany. Very little carbonation that perhaps resulted in a bubble or two after an aggressive pour. Not the prettiest beer but it was all up hill from there. Flavor and aroma show loads of caramel, toasted oak, raw wood, bourbon, vanilla, brown sugar, cocoa, and molasses. A little sweet and the alcohol is present but neither is overly distracting. Could have benefited from a touch more carbonation, still the mouthfeel was full and sticky. Pretty damn good!
3.3 Bottle. Pours ruby red with LOTS of carbonation. Taste is quite complex - lots of stuff in there; caramel, sugar, vanilla, bourbon, fruits and malts. You can taste the alcohol but it’s not dominating. A very good quad.
3.7 Bottle; thanks Papsoe! Pours a murky liquid poopy brown with no head. Funny cuz it gushed a little bit, a slow gush mind you, but the carbonation dissipates quickly. The beer does not suffer too much thankfully. Nose is rather raw at first, but mellows out as it breathes and warms. Dark fruits, hazelnuts, lots of brown sugar and caramelized sugar, woody and bourbon. Much more aromatic and inviting after ten minutes so this is a bad beer to have at a rapid fire tasting/gathering (I know *every* beer is) but I'm just saying. Palate is on the thin side, dark fruits, light metal, vanilla, booze, light bitterness, caramel finish. Overall one of the more complex quads I've had in a while but it is a style I rarely quaff these days. A fine beer worthy of the legend for which it is named.
3.7 Bottle: Poured a deep cloudy brown color ale with a large foamy head with average retention and some good lacing. Aroma of sugar is quite inete4nse with bourbon and vanilla notes also easily discernable. Taste is a great mix between loads of residual sugar with some vanilla and bourbon notes with some dry raisins and plums notes also perceptible. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very good though not something I would drink in large quantities since the sweetness level is bordering on gross.
4.1 Sweet chocolatey aroma. Sweet and strongly malty flavor, heavy caramel-like bourbon notes.
3.7 Bottle at Dan’s, pour courtesy of Aaron. Thanks Man! Pour is deep, caramel, with a small off-white head and no visible lacing. Big caramel, raisins, figs, brown sugar, vanilla, and maple int he aroma. Taste is light roast, caramel, candi sugar, light cardboard, grapefruit, vanilla, and wood. Sticky mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Really easy to drink and the alcohol is hidden dangerously. Pretty tasty.
3.6 Bottle @ Dan’s house, courtesy of Papsoe! Thanks again, friend! Pours a hazy orangish brown appearance with a tiny, tan head. Quite sweet, rich candy sugar, plum, dark fruity, woody, tangy aroma. Somewhat oxidized, rich caramel, toffee, dull whiskey, vanilla, woody, candy sugar flavor. Pretty tasty that I imagine would even be better a bit more fresh.
3.6 Pour out of 250 mL bottle, hazy brown, orange pour with thin white head, aroma has notes of sweet caramel, dark fruits, candied sugars, belgian candi sugar, hints of bourbon, oak, and vanilla. Taste is a mix of sweet fruit, candi sugar, hints of bourbon, oak, touch of earth, hints of caramel, finishing with a slight hint of booze, but nice and sweet.
3.9 Bottle shared. Pours murky brown with a small tan head. Aroma of vanilla, bourbon, caramel. Flavour is medium to heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter. Full bodied with soft carbonation.
3.6 35cl bottle courtesy of Kermis. Gusher. This off white head. Murky brown pour. A great brew apart from the gushing.
3.4 Dark amber with no head. Malty with fruity tones. malt, fruit and sweetness. Full body with a bitter sweet after taste.
3.7 Bottled # 97. Pours hazy and mahagony brown with a small, short living, tan head. Nose of bourbon, raisin and vanilla notes. Sweet flavor with overripe fruit, brown sugar and vanilla. Medium to full bodied, creamy to syrupy texture and average carbonation. Ends up more dry and with an alcohol bite. A nice but not an excellent sipper.
3.7 Bottle, cheers to the man himself for giving me this bottle and congratulations on your beer rating prowess. Deep agate color, small off white head. Quite a lot of bourbon in the nose, not a whole lot else. Big barrel flavor, candy sugar sweetness. Good carb and good consistency, didn’t gush at all (I had been warned it was a gusher).
4.2 Bottle: Batch 97: Thanks Papsø: Opened with a big plop and shzzz and right after came some beer. A quick response caused the most part of the beer to end in the glass. A deep dark murky brown muddy beer with a sizzling off white head that disappears completely within some seconds. Only a ring of off white bubbles equally split on the side of its beer and glass (but no head, no lacing). The aroma of bourbon hits the nose, mostly bourbon and vanilla tones, some spices, some wood, slight hint of alcohol and some slight malty tones. The smell makes it smell more like a bourbon than a quadruppel. The flavours are spicy with bourbon and honey. Some warmth of the alcohol, barley malts and malty woods. Darker fruits with some fermented yeast and light sticky alcoholic notes. The aftertaste seems to disappear quick but leaves only a warm alcoholic spicy barley taste. Low to medium carbo, soft spicy lightly blown mouthfeel, full body and a sticky light creamy texture. Very nice beer, only the aftertaste is a bit of a pity. All by all, pretty balanced with the bourbon notes though the bourbon notes are more present than the basis quadruppel. But I like it, it’s tasty and I guess more complex and interesting.
3.0 Small bottle. Poured medium amber with a short-lived tan head. The aroma picked up a lot of strong bourbon notes with vanilla, toasted vinous notes, and lightly-charred oak.. big from the beginning, and it never settled down and gelled. The flavor opened with tart oak and bourbon notes, vinous and bready notes at the core.. mostly sharper bourbon plus some caramel and molasses sugars on the long, boozy finish. Heavier-bodied with low-ish carbonation on the palate.. too big, too sharp, and too much barrel.
2.9 Bottle (batch 97) consumed at Brasserie 4:20. Clear reddish brown pour with a faint white head. Booze and caramel aromas. Thins in body. The booze completely overshadow the beer. Lots of caramel malts with some off toes that reminded me of Brett.
3.9 24th October 2009 Cloudy brown beer, light tan head. Crispy palate with some bite despite the moderate carbonation. Smooth smooth beer. Just a little wood from the bourbon barrel and just about the prefect amount of smooth bourbon. Finishes smooth(there is a theme here!) with a little minerals.
3.2 (25 cl bottle; Batch #97) Pours clear brown with quickly receding tan head. A little lace. Aroma is dominated by notes of bourbon and oak. Lively carbonation, medium body, watery texture and a warming finish. The flavour is slightly oxidised bready malt with notes from the aroma. I’m glad I got to taste this but I prefer something darker, thicker and more hoppy.
3.6 50 cl bottle. Rated on 20110618. Pours murky brown color with small head. Lots of pressure in the bottle. Aroma of sweet malts compareable to Founder Backwoods Bastard, some barley wine like elements. Flavor of sweet malts, some syrup and pine. Some tangy palate from the barrels. More like an english barley wine than an quad. 5313
3.6 Pour muddy, mahogany, with no head. Aroma is packed with bourbon, ripe dark fruits, vanilla, molasses, wood, leather, caramel, syrup, chocolate. taste is quite sweet. Medium and oily body, with a whole lot of fizzy carbonation.
3.9 (Draught) Pours hazy reddish brown. The aroma holds oak wood, bourbon and vanilla up front with undertones of sweet fruits, sugar and robust malt. Some alcohol warmth on the nose. The flavour is medium sweet and light bitter. Fat malty and bourbon oaky with notes of fruits and spices. The mouthfeel is soft and smooth. Medium to full bodied.
3.4 Bottle @ Home. Pours hazy browm head fades as fast as the beer is poured, abit dull actually it dont look very inviting. Aroma of malt, brown sugar, caramel, chocolate, oak, vanilla, booze. Taste is malty, chocolate, oak. vanilla, coconut, bourbon, dried fruit. Medium to full body, fairly high carbonation for a BA beer, alcohol well hiden. 210112
