Amager / Jester King Danish Metal

Amager / Jester King Danish Metal

English:
It was a true Texan invasion when Jester King came to Amager. We honestly lost count but we believe at least 8 or 9 of these cowboys came riding in - dragging their suitcase rollers along. And we didn’t put up much of a fight since it was the day after the Copenhagen Beer Celebration party. Morten fell asleep in the malt room and Jacob pretty much fell asleep leaning against the mash tun while mashing in. René? Well, we never saw René that day. Oh yes, we were beat. Dead meat we were. Crooked Stave came by, so did The Kernel and Off Color Brewing - or was it somebody else? Sorry, we totally lost track. But Manker was here….we think.
But a beer was indeed brewed in this massive state of being wasted, and a bit of a beast it is. We took the original version of Jester King’s Black Metal - the one with a British ale yeast - and gave it a bit of a Danish spin. Hence Danish Metal was born. It’s rich and potent and powerful - just like a Texas steak. Or something. But we’re babbling. We’ll shut up now. Sorry.

4.2 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a head of foamy fine to large sized dark brown colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque black brown colored body and a very good lacing. The nice aroma was brown malt. The thick mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering malty aftertaste. The yummy flavor contained notes of semi-sweet roasted malt vinous burnt malt brown malt dough breads and hops. Delicious and one I would certainly like to have again.
4.3 Appearance: Rich black brown. Opaque. Finger of mocha foam. Nose: Rich dark chocolate bitters, a bit of chocolate syrup sweetness and darkly roasted malts. Taste: very much like the nose. Darkly roasted bittersweet malt with dark chocolate notes. a bit minerally. Body: full and a bit viscous. Very light carbonation Parting thoughts: First beer from the legendary Danish brewer did not disappoint.
3.7 "Tonight the circle is meeting again... It’s a dangerous meeting" - Mercyful Fate "Dangerous Meeting." Happily for the brewers and for us, the meeting of minds between Jester King and Amager didn’t end as lethally and spiritually damning as the tale of "Dangerous Meeting" as sung by King Diamond. In fact the meeting resulted in a rather tasty beer. It’s an unusual one, though. A bit of Belgian influence, even in the appearance which has just a bit of sediment in the bottom of the glass. A little Belgian yeast character in the aroma/flavor too. There’s the usual roasted/toasted Stout notes but with a large dark fruit presence and a vinous quality. Kind of like the subgenre of Danish Metal itself this brew is fun and a bit weird. What’s not to like?
3.7 Black. Roasted malt aroma. Flavor is surprisingly smooth and soft. Roasted malt, some sugar.rich palate. A little coffee. Good beer.
3.4 Bottle. A- Char, smoke, subtle ham, licorice, tobacco, dark berries. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Char, licorice, leather, dark berries, roasty. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, roasty finish. O- All sorts of flavors going on in here. It’s okay but not awe inspiring.
4.2 Bottle at The Growler Spot. Black with a tight beige head. Aroma of roast, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is very roasty and bittersweet. Full bodied, a little oily and smooth.
4.0 500mL bottle, pours jet black with a small brown head. Aroma brings out loads of roasted malt and blackberries. Flavour is very rich, with loads of dried dark fruits, roasted malt and chocolate. Rich and rather brutal, but a lovely slow sipper. Excellent.
3.6 Bottle. Black in color with a tan head. Dark chocolate, roasted malts and cocoa powder in aroma. Smooth but quite heavy mouthfeel. Dark chocolatey bitterness in taste. Heavy to drink, black metal is better.
3.6 Quite nice with some char and tobacco in addition to the usual stout chocolate and coffee. Finishes a bit thin.
3.9 Pours black with a thin brown head. Spotty lacing. Aroma of Smoke, leather, chocolate, Anise and coffee. Flavor of tabacco, anise, chocolate and coffee. Medium body. Creamy/slick texture. Lasting hop finish where the alcohol becomes more pronounced. Good shit.
4.1 Pours a black opaque with a tobacco tan head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is chocolate with roast in the background. The flavor is rich & smooth with a chocolatey forefront. The mouth feel is full with the finish of sweetness that reminds you of Quick chocolate milk .... with a slight bitterness to help balance out the sweetness.
4.2 500 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, black licorice, raisin, prune, date, caramel, toffee, fudge, tobacco, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, char, herbal, light smoke, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, black licorice, raisin, prune, date, caramel, toffee, fudge, tobacco, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, char, herbal, pine, light smoke, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Moderate roast/char and herbal/pine hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, black licorice, dark fruit, caramel, fudge, tobacco, dark bread, char, herbal, pine, and yeast/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and earthy hop flavors; with a nice roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, with no astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop/char bitterness, increasing through the glass. Light-medium carbonation and full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/slick, and fairly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great., Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding Russian imperial stout. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
3.8 Dense dark color, rich aroma of chocolate, roast, vanilla and char. Flavor mistly the same...a little bigger. Only medium bodied for the style and abv, but quite pleasant if a little expensive here.
3.8 Bottle. Pours black. Aroma and taste are roasted malts, bitter coffee, and dark chocolate.
3.9 Pours dark brown, with no carbonation. Aroma is vanilla and chocolate. Not as thick as I expected but overall very nice
3.9 Bottle. Sensoric. Pitch black with small to medium, semi-sensed, light brown head. High roasted aroma - mostly dark chocolate, espresso type coffee notes, but lately some milk chocolate notes. Also some licorice and dark fruits (not too much) - plums in chocolate aromas. Taste is mainly semi-sweet, but in the end you can feel some bitter notes, unfortunately with some abs noticeable. Full body, oily, soft carbonation, finish is roasted, semi-sweet and little boozy (warming). In general really nice, rich and full imperial stout, pretty drinkable. Really nice beer and not so expensive.
3.8 500 ml bottle. Pours black with a short tan head. Aromas of licorice, dark sugar, acidic black coffee, dry roasted malts and alcohol. Flavors of same though lighter alcohol notes with additional lean coconut and dark chocolate. Quite nice.
(Rating #6946)
3.6 Toast and roasted malt with some soy, cacao and licorice. Something with the palate that doesn’t fall into place with me. Good imperial stout but it makes an fleeing impression.
3.9 Draft at thirsty monk. Pours black like soy sauce with an inch of thick khaki foam. Leaves a lot of lacing in the glass. Lots of dark roast on the nose. Lots of soy and bitterness on the tongue that blends nicely with the stout notes. Finishes clean. Nice example of style.
3.8 500, capped. Pours an opaque silky jet black with a dense and creamy burnt tan head that only shows up for a second. Big dark coffee and soy sauce nose with some dark pitted tree fruit behind that. Creamy thick body with sluggish carb. Huge coffee mid palate with lots of soy and dark, almost roasty fruits behind that. Long dark finish.
3.9 A deep dark imperial stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with loads of dark fruits, molasses, plums, licorice, alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet chocolate malt with loads of dark fruits, plums, licorice, molasses, alcohol warmth, interesting and intense. On tap at Eulogy.
3.7 500ml bottle. Poured a near black color with a smaller sized tan head. Dark fruits, roast, licorice, and some dark chocolate.
4.5 On draught. Pours black, with a small tan head. Nose is cocoa, dark roast malt, and hops. Taste is huge malt up front, with cocoa in the middle, and a nice moderate hop finish. Excellent.
4.5 From Capone’s. Deep black pour with tan head. Nose is huge dark choc, dark malt. Tastes rich, complex, creamy, with huge palate heft, and big dark malt and dark chocolate flavor, with a dense finish.
3.9 Draft at Bru Craft. Opaque black pour with an impressive brown head. Lots of lace. Giant dark roasted malts. Cocoa nibs. Espresso beans. Burnt peanuts. Vinyl. Chocolate liquorice. Black peppercorns. Just a hint of smoke. Medium body. Surprisingly easy drinking. Solid brew.
3.8 5/6/16. Draft at criterion. Round and somewhat fruity nose w a bit of roast. The mouth is super roasty. Big beer. Good example of an imperial stout.
3.8 Tap at Clubhouse BFD. Pours black, huge tan head. Aroma is super roasted, malt, lots of chocolate, minimal sour funk, flavor is roasted malt. Yea, roasted is biggest thing. Minimal sour funk. Solid.
3.7 Draft at Churchkey. The best beer deScription I’ve ever seen, plus one appearance point for that. Opaque dark brown color. Aroma of funky cocoa and coffee. Taste is fruity bittersweet espresso. Tasty.
