Our friends of Chris Robinson Brotherhood released their new album “Phosphorescent Harvest” and kicked off their U.S. tour in the SF Bay Area earlier this spring. To celebrate, we tapped the first keg of our Brotherhood Steam Beer, a Golden State Collaboration of handcrafted California tunes and handcrafted California brews.
Inspired by the brewing tradition of our flagship, Anchor Steam® Beer, Brotherhood Steam Beer is brewed with its own unique recipe. A distinct malt bill gives the beer its copper color, and dry-hopping with Citra and Nelson Sauvin hops adds aromatic hints of citrus and mint. The result is a smooth, full-bodied malt flavor with a lingering, fresh hop finish.
A long-standing English brewery tradition is to designate their beers, “Ordinary”, “Best or Special”, and “Extra Special Bitter” (ESB) to note beers of increasing strength.
In the spirit of that tradition, we like to think of Brotherhood Steam Beer as an Extra Special Lager (ESL), aka “The Gig Beer” – an easy drinking brew from the first set to encore. This collaborative brew will be tapped at music venues across the US to celebrate the Brotherhood’s new album.

3.8Pours clear and amber with two fingers of off white head. Aroma is sweet and cidery with a crisp yeast character. Flavor is smooth with a full malt body and hints of apples.
2.0Clear copper brew with nice head and a herbal aroma. Taste is hops up front, citrus, spicy, then a hit of the caramel malts. It’s OK but not great as I would have expected for the higher price tag. Well looking at the cost I would not only have expected better taste but also a higher ABV and for it to be in a proper bottle rather than a cheap CAN. So overall not good.
3.7Pours hazy amber, medium white head and lot of lacing. Aroma of ripe fruits and light citrus. It gets lager malts, caramel, sharp bitterness balanced by ripe fruit and tangerine. Medium body, creamy, lively carbonation, long dry finish. Decent.
3.112oz can from Antioch Fine Wine, no can date. Copper amber pour with an off-white head. Some streaky lace. Aroma has fruits, light cereal and vague citrus and stone fruits. Taste follows and adds some sweet malts. Tangy in that old-beer Anchor Steam way. Medium bodied with some alcohol presence. The blend is ok, and the carbonation is constant. Finishes tangy bittersweet. Shrug? About what expected. 12
3.7Can: Tang, wood underneath. Clear copper, medium yellow head. Tang again, artificial and sweet. Malty finish. Medium body, easy carbonation. Quite tasty, but I can’t shake the chemical qualities.
3.5Really nice copper colour freem cloudiness, decent sized head, no lacing. Tastes has some lemon, malt, caramel and bergamot tea. Has a really moreish dry oaty aftertaste.
3.7Simple but effective almost a cream ale come amber vienna golden some fruitiness smooth on the palate.
3.3355ml can. Pours dark orange with a medium head. Aroma is fruity and bready hops. Taste has fruity caramel malt. Some earthy hops.
4.112oz can from Sheffiel shop, James Clay importers bb06/2018 (hm). - Bref: the quintessential of judiciously dryhopped, drinkable ale-lager hybrid, UK-US and ESB-CaliCommon crossover. Aroma of Lady Grey granulate, tealeaf, bergamot and candied lemon. Fine caramel (De Strooper wafers) accomodating citrus and orange tea. Herbal and citrus pith bitter finish. Could be the quintessential oldschool US style even before IPA in its way of unifying mutually exclusive ESB-Märzen-Speciale belge.
3.4Single 12floz can, no freshness date, paid the equivalent of $1.50, poured into a nonic glass. Color is copper with a slight haze, and the two finger subsides to leave lace. The aroma consists of cut grass. Mouthfeel is medium, and mild tasting of toast and black pepper. I can see this as being a lagered bitter, and for what it is, it is fine.
3.4Refrigerated 12 oz. aluminum can poured into a glass. Clear copper, medium body, medium carbonation, and good small-bubble lacing. Aroma is floral herbal hops. Taste is herbal hops, caramel malt, and bitter finish.
3.6355ml can. Clear copper with one finger slightly off white head. Aroma is grapefruit, light spicy herbal mint, caramel, citrus and gooseberries. Taste is grapefruit, citrus, gooseberries, light caramel and bread. Light to medium mouthfeel, light carbonation and slightly bitter citrus fruity aftertaste with a light sweet caramel backbone.
3.412/11/16. On tap at World of Beer, Hilton Head. Copper pour with a small khaki head. Light citrus aroma, pineapple, malty, caramel, biscuit. Good flavor, malty, caramel, toasty, biscuit, a touch of bitterness and citrus. Not bad.
3.7Pours a coppery oranish color with off-white colored head. Citrus, caramel, cereal grains, and a light grass on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with plenty of malt, cereal grain, and some hay.
3.5Can from appellation wines dalry. Pours clear amber with long lived creamy head. Nose of musty cellar, shortbread, spiced orange. Taste is smooth, fruity, biscuity, underlying foosty bitterness.
3.4A 12 fl oz can with no visible canned on or best by date. Poured into a stemmed Mikkeller tasting glass. It poured a clear copper orange colour with a just less than two finger off white head that had decent retention and left nice lacing. Aromas of citrus orange, citrus zest, grass, herbal, caramel and toasty biscuit. Tastes of grapefruit, orange, lemon, citrus zest, caramel, biscuit malt sweetness, herbal and floral. Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, nicely balanced and easy to drink.
3.5Can from Crafty Bottle, Lincoln. Rich amber golden colour with a tan head. Aroma is mainly malty, and a touch of nuts.Taste mostly sweet, with a bitter hop finish. Medium body and very drinkable.
3.4Can. Pale amber with a white head. Aroma of bread crust, lime leaf, grapes, grass. Medium bodied. Bread crusts and grapes, citrus and herbal notes at the moderately bitter finish. First steam beer I’ve found genuinely tasty.
3.7Can. Amber with one finger head. Seems like a sweeter, fuller bodied version of Anchor Steam. Caramel and mild hops. Simple, but very good.
3.6The sweetness of this one got me...it is a nice pour and pleasant flavor overall and though a bit low ABV the sweetness really won me over. I will drink it again.
3.4Sarasota, Fl - Total Wine - 12 oz can. Medium copper pour, light off-white head. Aroma presents some toffee and molasses. Flavor is decidedly sweet, with some ripening vegetables, hint of molasses, some caramel. Thickish mouthfeel.
3.7355 ml can from Utobeer Market Stall, London.
Dark amber, clear body, with a big, creamy, lacing, off-white head.
Aroma of sweet bread, flowers, sweet fruits, caramel, some grass, some herbs.
Taste follows this, with more citric and grape like fruit notes.
Medium, a bit creamy mouthfeel, with an average carbonation.
Finishes medium bitter, a bit dry, floral, citric, bready, lingering piney, with the grape notes dominating.
Very nice. Quaffable and well balanced, with the typical Nelson Sauvin grape notes shining through more and more towards the finish. Quite unique stuff, with the distinctive smoothness I love this brewery for.
3.5Can. Slightly hazy golden color with small off-white head. Somewhat sweet malty aroma. Mostly sweet malty flavor with biscuit notes and a touch of hops in the finish. Medium bodied and drinkable.
3.7Can from Liquor Barn. Pours copper with one finer of white head. Aroma is citra hops with a pleasant malt profile.
3.9Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a soft amber color with a nice fluffy white foamy head that held for a good half minute and then dissipated gently into the beer.
The aroma starts malty sweet bready/toffee flowing into fruity esters. Sweet all of the way through.
The flavor leans bready sweet the whole time. Quick bready sweet aftertaste running into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a nice sessionable smooth crisp sweet feel rolling along my tongue. Feels super smooth all around.
Overall, really good Cali common. I don’t see any dates anywhere but I’m suspecting this might have a little bit of age to it given that it’s so smooth.
3.8Dark gold color with a big creamy head. This has a bit of an Oktoberfest feel to it. A little hops at the end. Pretty solid.
3.6Dark gold pour, quick off white head. Nose is yeast, little metal, and subtle citrus. Bitter. Middle shows caramel malt, bark, floral citrus. Finish is dry and lasts a bit. Similar to Anchors original, but definitely a different beer. Try it.
3.4Can pours clear gold lots of foam. Grassy and woody -- what am I drinking, a clearing? Lightly bitter finish. Nice.
3.5Pale copper pour with a dense white head... pleasant, but not strong fruity aromas... caramel malt body with light hops, bit of a metallic twang... very drinkable, but a bit uninspiring. Okay.
3.8pours yellow with a white head. it has a savory nose rich with yeast almost cheesy. the flavor is sweet and savory. a pleasant sip. i will return to this beer at some point. although having read a previous review on the beer it doesn’t make me want to punch some hookers like it did them, i do recommend it regardless of the impulse to punch hookers laking.
