Anchor IPA

ANCHOR IPA™

An adventurous new brew from America’s original craft brewery.

The California Gold Rush lured thousands west to "see the elephant," a 19th-century metaphor for the hopeful but risky pursuit of happiness, adventure, and fortune. As early as 1849, India Pale Ale - prepared by British brewers for export to India by adding dry hops to barrels of hoppy ale - was also heading west, from England around the Horn to San Francisco. Thirsty ‘49ers savored the best imported IPAs, but it wasn’t until 1975 that Anchor, Americas’ original craft brewery, pioneered the revival of dry-hopped handmade ales. Now, that tradition fast-forwards to an adventurous new brew: Anchor IPA™.

Anchor IPA™ is made with 2-row barley malt and fresh whole-cone hops, its bright amber color, distinctively complex aroma, spiky bitterness, malty depth, and clean finish unite to create a uniquely flavorful, memorable, and timeless craft IPA.

The elephant you see on Anchor IPA™ was hand-drawn by our label artist, James Stitt. To "see the elephant" was a popular 19th-century expression that originated with a tale that predates the California Gold Rush.

There once lived a farmer who had heard of elephants but had never seen one. He longed for the day when he might catch a glimpse of this rare, exotic creature. When the circus came to town, he loaded his wagon with fresh produce and headed to market. On the way, just as he’d hoped, he came across the circus parade, nobly led by an enormous elephant. The farmer was ecstatic, but his horses were terrified. They reared and bucked, overturning his wagon and scattering its precious contents in the road. "I don’t give a hoot," exclaimed the farmer. "I have seen the elephant!"

The elephant became the universal symbol of the Gold Rush, as evidenced by the journals, letters, and sketchbooks of the forty-niners. Whether or not they struck it rich in the diggings, those plucky pioneers would forever treasure their California adventure as the defining moment of their lives. Have you seen the elephant?

3.1 Drunk from bottle, medium-high bitterness not much flavour to back it up Overall an alright beer nothing special.
3.4 From 355 bottle, lot #509. Poured low head and low foam retention. Pleasant carbonation level. Nice amber color and balanced malty body. Malty aroma and low bitterness makes it easily drinkable.
4.2 Birra dal colore ambrato. Schiuma dal colore bianco sporco, cremosa e persistente. All’olfatto sentori di frutta esotica, agrumi e fiori.
4.0 0,335l Flasche. Hellbraune Farbe, heller Schaum. Fruchtig-kräuteriger Duft. Etwas Tulpe. Im Antrunk Harz, Citrus. Ziemlich bitter. Klassisches California IPA.
3.5 Piwo skonsumowane. Ocena na podstawie retrospekcji w celu uzupełnienia profilu.
3.6 Had it from a bottle. What a beer. Great coloring. Good personality and the bitterness is in the right amount.
4.1 Bottle at home. Amber in colour with a thin head and good lacing. Excellent IPA aroma of nutty, sweet malt and leafy, earthy hop. Not much sweetness is followed by a massive, rasping bitterness. Grainy malt yet buttery smooth, earthy, peppery hop and a huge bitter, dry finish that borders on astringency. Uncompromising yet compellingly drinkable.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a mostly clear amber with a lasting foamy off white head. Notes of citrus, pine, caramel, lemongrass, hint of grapefruit, toffee. Oily mouthfeel, medium carbonation.
3.6 From the 650 ml. stubby bottle stamped 5AQ on the label. The pour is a handsome looking medium amber with good clarity leading up to a boisterous off-white, foamy head that lingers and laces. We may have been spoiled lately by those pineapple and grapefruit esters of today’s IPAs but this one is a traditional one and I am getting a decent malt character, tobacco, and herbal spice. The body is medium and smooth. Same caramel malt presence in the taste followed abruptly by the tobacco and herbal spice characters I mentioned before.Mildly bitter.
3.5 (Keg at  Viisi Penniä, 20161209) The beer poured deep amber and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had grass, herbalness and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were grass, herbalness, fruitiness, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy and bitter. A good bit English style hoppy pale ale.
3.8 355ml Bottle: Pours a hazy deep copper with creamy off-white head. Lacing. Aroma of caramel, stone fruit and pine. Flavours of caramel, some spiciness and pine from the hops. a slight alcohol warmth as an aftertaste, but not off-putting. Resinous bitterness from the hops but balanced by the malt. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Overall some big flavours but the beer is very well balanced. Good bitterness.
Ananas, mangue, agrumes. Belle amertume longue en bouche.

3.2 Bottle, on the couch Appearance : a good-lookig amber body, not much foam (white) Nose : caramel, honey Taste : bitter, grass and citrus, nothing oustanding. -> a rather good beer, nothing to write home about but very refreshing
3.8 Bottle; pours slightly hazy dark amber with a white head; aroma is citrus, mostly orange, caramel, and malt; taste is bitter with citrus, grapefruit, and a touch of caramel sweetness; finish is bitter; nice beer
3.3 355ml. bottle @ Home. Aroma: not very intense. Hints of tropical fruits, spices, fruits, grapefruit, honey. Appearance: very good. Deep amber beauty color with above average head thickness. Off-white super creamy head with medium lacing. Very hazy. Above average head retention. Taste: low-to-medium sweetness, medium bitterness, low sourness. Very well balanced with nice flavor of fruits, spices, and a citric touch. Biiter-sweet flavors. Palate: medium body, oily texture, above average carbonation, quite long dry bitter finish of fruits, spices, honey and some citrus, maybe grapefruit. Overall: good appearance, and very good and pleasant aromas and flavors but neither of them very intense. Maybe not a prototypical IPA, but a very good beer i wouldn’t mind to drink again. Very refreshing and thirst quenching.
3.7 #951 Bottle. A bit hazy amber to orange body, yellowish head. Atoma of flowers, honey, malts, pear, caramel. Taste is moderately bitter and sweet. Pines, honey, flowers, spices, grapefruit peels, lot of grapefruits in the finish. Fuller body, medium to high carbonation. Really tasty one.
3.7 Bottle 0.355l. Lightly cloudy, light amber colored. AROMA- honey, liquid caramel, fruit. FLAVOR- dry, quite bitter, caramel, touch of fruit. Medium to fuller bodied. Very good.
2.9 0.33l bottle. This is a blurry one, deep golden almost a little amber in color and a nice big lasting just off-white head placed on the top. Fruity slightly sweetish caramel nose. It definitely doesn’t kick you in the face but it’s balanced with sweet red berries blended with a mild piney hoppy touch. Nice. Much the same in the taste also. In the mouth it has a light oily texture and it’s just above average on the carbonation. Caramellish and a little metallic also, unfortunately. Red berry sweet and it has a slightly artificial candy presence. Tastes a little like a lager imo. Hints of butterscotch in the finish and aftertaste. A little odd, but fair enough. 28.12.2014
3.9 6.5%ABV. IPA. Poured out deep Amber. 14ºSRM. Nose has sweet malt and pine. Mouthfeel is soapy. Palate is sweet malt with graham cracker and bread crumbs. Hops are aggressively bitter, spicy with cilantro, mint and hint of hyssop. Finish is medium and bitter. Overall a very solid IPA with all the necessary attributes for greatness but just not unique. Goes on the list for being a solid IPA.
3.6 Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The color is light copper with an orange blush. The head is foamy white and sticks around for a while. The aroma is herbal, toasty and lemony. The flavor exudes a bitter toasted malt, a little grassy, with a bit of a harsh lemon bite in the finish.
3.5 Bottle - not my first but finally reviewing it. Pours copper with thick foamy head. Smells malty and caramelly rather than typical IPA. Quite sweet, but good mix of hops, mango, pine, caramel. Suspect this tastes way better closer to home on draught. It’s a good, if sweet and slightly dense IPA in bottle. Goes well with cheese in fact. Decent but nothing groundbreaking.
3.5 Amber/orange color, average sized tan head. Aroma of caramel, melon, citrus, herbs. Taste of caramel, melon, peach, citrus, herbs, tropical notes (mango). Very long bitter finish. Medium body, average carbonation. Good IPA. -- rated with beerbasher/winphone
3.7 orange brown with huge white head; aroma is very hoppy tangy citric and grapefruit; taste is medium sweet fruity citric, resin, leading to a bitter resin grapefruit finish with some alkohol; creamy mouthfeel and average carbonation
3.1 Big sweet resiny aroma. Dark amber with big head. Sappy resiny sweetness and caramel. No bitterness at all. Even for an English ipa this lacks bite. Dry finish of floral hops but still less bitter than a Dortmunder. Kind of a let down.
3.8 Rated on 7-19-2016. The appearance of this canned beer is a large ivory head that mostly diminished, hazy dark amber body, fast rising carbonation, and spotty lacing. The aroma presents juicy hops, earthy, orange hops, and caramel malt. The flavor is moderately bitter, citrus hops, grapefruit, earthy, and caramel malt. The mouthfeel is smooth with moderate carbonation. This is a medium bodied IPA. A most quaffable beer with a good caramel malt taste. It is worth trying and a beer I would drink again.
4.2 IPA muy suavita. Buena.
