Anchor Saison

Anchor Saison

Saisons originated with the rustic farmhouse ales of Wallonia, a mostly French-speaking region of Belgium. Bière de saison was brewed during the saison froide (cold season) for consumption during the warmer months. Today saisons are made and enjoyed year-round. Anchor Saison Spring Ale (7.2% ABV) is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, Anchor chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

3.4 355ml Flasche. Oranges trübes Bier, dünner Schaum. Es duftet nach Zimt und Zitrone. Antrunk leicht süsslich. Gewürze, Hefe, Brotteig. Schön rund.

3.0 .33l bottle @Harry’s. Pours clear golden with high head. Aroma and flavor is floral, citrus, malts, hops, yeast.
3.2 12 oz bottle from notes. Pours a clear orange amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have toasted malts, caramel, earthy notes, light funk, grass, mild fruit character, yeast, metallic hints, herbal, all in all it just falls short.
4.4 lemon pine and ginger my first impression of aroma with dough yeast and spice actually very nice..can’t complain about appearance either pale amber orange with pure white sudsy head..taste is spicy, citrusy and peppery with a piney hop flavor as well..despite the other ratings I like it light and tingly on the palate..overall great summer beer as good as a majority of saisons(and add Belgians too) that ive tried
3.2 A clear orange beer with a thin layer of white foam. Nose has nice aromas of citrus, bandaid and other teasty funk. Taste is dry with a mildly bitter finish and some tartness. Lively, creamy carbonation and light palate, some fusel warmth as well. Quite nice hefty saison with pleasant yeast aroma.
3.6 Clean golden color, medium white head. Aroma of malt, yeast, spices, grass, hops, some fruity notes. Dry sweet taste with mild bitterness in finish and aftertaste. Thin body and average carbonation. Nice refreshing beer.
3.0 Bottle. Clear amber color with white head. Aroma - Weird, grass, pepper, yeast. Taste - Light sweetness, lightly sour, spice, hay, lemon, peach.
3.3 On tap @ BrewDog, Soho. This one has quite deeper cloudy looking orange almost copper colored body. On the top there’s a n ice medium sized off-white head, lots of complementary lacework down the sides of the glass. It smells like a saison for sure. Yeasty, some banana, it’s a little candy sweet almost. almost white candied sugar and a little apple. I kinda like it, though it’s nothing out of the ordinary really. Tastes quite nice also. It’s a relatively earthy saison this. Quite up-yeasted - in a good way with canned pear, some more unripe apple. Quite fruity, yeah and somewhat tasty as well. That’s a nice old combo. 20.10.2016
3.3 Bottle. Clear amber beer, medium white head. Spicy nose, some citric-tripely aspects, malt, yeast notes. Flavor is a strange mix of toasty malt, some caramel sweetness, lemony-citric notes, Belgian yeast, sugar. Finish is on the dry side, more toasty lemons and booze. Not bad, but pretty weird.
3.0 Pours hazy orange-gold color with a 1-finger bone-colored head. Lemony aroma with a light bite of ginger. Body is light and a touch oily. Dry finish. Flavor of lemon with a light ginger note. An earthy note mixes with some black pepper at the back.
2.6 330ml bottle (Sip, Tallinn) Orange, brief head. Very spicy aroma. Like an italian pasta sauce. With tomatoes. And even with the tins! Better in the mouth. Light palate, a bit watery, crispish carbonation. Sweet spicy taste, hard to describe, some herbal aspects, some basil maybe, clearly some interesting fermentation has gone on. A bit of alcohol too alas, and some other solventy aspects. Curious experiment went a bit wrong, methinks. Gimme gimme gimme dupont...
3.3 355ml bottle. Clear dark piss like color. Tiny size, white head, disappears. Metallic, very malty, sweet, yeasty, herbal in aroma. Sweet, bit smoked, herbal, faint huskiness and some hops in taste. Minty hops and sweet in aftertaste. Carbonation is quite high. Well as double imperial saison- is drinkable.
2.8 Taikurissa 8/2016. Quite sweet saison, not as fresh I hoped. Not very good saison.
2.7 12oz bb02/2017 courtesy of Secret Summer Santa Saeglopur amidst a host of AT goodies, merci! - Bref: this fruit-spiked super saison bears the phenolic weight and oiliness of a Belgian tripel - less than refreshing, decent enough Belgian ale, poor saison. - Smells like a peach and marilla liqueur forward macro tripel sans the industrial white sugars. Added lemongrass, lemons and ginger feel sticky even in aroma as if boiled down into a jam preservative. Dense mouthfeel, not dry or airy enough for a saison even going by dense Fantôme or Pipaix standards. Drinks heavy like a tripel. Odd. cf. Braufactum Soleya, SchnW Mathilda.
3.4 35.5cl bottle at Uncle Babe’s Burger Bar, Ghent (22 VII 2016), shared with a friend. Cognac-like brew with pretty stable yellow foam on top. The nose has keen hints of flowers and malts, a great Belgian-American combo. The mouthfeel has many wheat hints, and despite its +7% ABV there is little alcohol sensation. The taste is light bitter with spiced character, medium sweet and fruity. Lovely.
2.4 Bottle. Very non-saison looking, clear, amber pour with a medium white head, good retention. Nose is faint yeast funk, grass, white pepper, glue. Mouth is medium bodied, kinda sweet, slight spiciness from yeast, lemon, lilies, wallpaper paste. Not a good example of the style and not really good - in any sense - at all.
3.2 Slightly hazy orange color with a bit of white head. Aroma has malt sweetness, some yeast spice and orange flavor. Taste starts with yeast spice, malt sweetness, a bit of sugar and some fermented citrus fruits. Body is on the light side, quite dry, with medium carbonation.
3.9 Cloudy amber with a medium beige head. Nose of spice, zest, grapefruit, some hoppy herbal and piney notes. Medium sweetness followed by light crispy bitterness on par with carbonation acidity. Fairly dry body, high carbonation, a little alco warmth on finish. Dry and crispy yet spicy and warming, perfect for springtime, though a tad too sweet.
1.6 Bright amber pour with thin white head. Aroma is yeasty, fruity and boozy. Flavours are interesting but very much not for me. Much too sweet and boozy. Very heavy and cloying. Never again.
3.0 Aroma is slight yeasty and sweet. Slight ginger and citrus. Taste is herbal and slight creamy with a malty presence. A little too clean and anonymous?
3.4 Has that Belgian farmhouse flavor, but not so much that saison bubbly feel. Almost like a Belgian IPA hybrid. Grassy, light citrus, yeasty, and mildly hopped. Lighter semi-clear orange appearance. Found a single of this on clearance for a buck....good enough to try again.
3.3 Slightly hazy orange color with a bit of white head. Aroma has malt sweetness, some yeast spice and orange flavor. Taste starts with yeast spice, malt sweetness, a bit of sugar and some fermented citrus fruits. Body is on the light side, quite dry, with medium carbonation. Overall it’s a decent beer but for my taste it’s a bit too sweet for a saison.
2.9 I poured it from the bottle into a pint glass. It pours copper with a thin, white head. The aroma is banana, spice, and yeast. The taste is banana, wheat, lemon, and hops. It was a little heavy. This isn’t one of the better examples of the style. It was okay.
3.1 Keg at brewdog Edinburgh. Pours clear golden, nose is esters, floral, banana, yeasty, taste is dry toffee, sweet, light fruit.
3.2 20/VI/16 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ home - BB: II/2018 (2016-682) Clear amber beer, huge creamy yellowish head, very stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: malty, caramel, some banana, fruity, sweet. MF: soft carbon, medium to light body (with 7%?). Taste: sweet start, malty, little spicy, very subtle, some caramel, dried fruits, little bitter. Aftertaste: pretty spicy, bitter hops, sweet touch, malty, grains, hint of ginger, orange peel, little sweet.
3.4 Keg at Brewdog Soho, rich bright brown with a lacing head, aromas of clove dominate, with barnyard and ginger just below. Palate brings caramel and more spice, touches of lemon and a peppery hoppiness, then a ginger warmth appears in the very slightly over-sweet finish.
3.6 Grassy, wheat, saison yeast in the nose. Dark golden pour with thick, fading foam. Moderately sweet taste, citrusy crispness with a yeasty sour finish. Medium body, slightly above average carbonation, moderately slick. The citrus notes blend with the hops to create a bitterness. High alcohol level provides a warm finish that reminds you of the hops. Good complex flavor. A moderate / mild example, but a good one.
2.9 355ml bottle. Slightly milky, orangey golden colour with small, frothy, half-way lasting, off-white head. Floral, fruity and minimally spicy aroma, hints of plum, lavender, ginger, clove, a touch of spruce. Taste is moderately sweet caramel malty, slightly spicy, minimally soapy floral, hints of ginger and clove, a touch of liquorice. A bit weird - flavours seem to be more artificially spiced than yeast obtained.
