4.1 Sample at Belgium Chimipalooza. Cognac barrel batch #2, how can these beers be merged into one? Aroma is raisins, caramel, ripe apples, wood, white wine. Sweet with acidic notes the barrel is covering the rest a bit to much for my taste.
4.0 Nearly black pour with a tan head. Aroma is hot with cognac and also notes of vanilla, caramel, dark sugars, darker fruit, chocolate. Full bodied, pleasant, darker malt flavors dominate with a good barrel balance, alcohol hidden well.
4.1 Christmas tasting. Similar to the Woodford, a bit more fruity perhaps. Plums, raisins. Sweet and boozy.
4.3 Bottle shared by wickedestman, many thanks! Batch 2. Dark reddish amber with no head. Caramel, boozy raisins, dark, burnt sugar, some wood. Massive and full, but super smooth and balanced. Hides booze so well.
4.1 Dark color. Lots of caramel and sugar. Alcohol is there in the aorma and on the palate, and it is certainly one of the strongest beers I have had. Some brandy flavor as well, which works very well with the sweet barleywine. Rich and heavy palate. Excellent beer.
4.2 On tap at cbc. Old note. The aroma has caramel, booze, red wine, dried fruit. Dark red coloured beer with an off-white head. The taste is sweet with some bitterness, has cognac, caramel, figs. Full bodied beer. Very pleasant.
4.1 Batch #2 2014 bottle. Pours a clear garnet with a half a finger of tan head that thins to a film. Aroma has smooth notes of spirit barrel, wood spice, dark fruits, and caramel. Taste is sweet but not cloying. Caramel, toffee, dark fruits, wood spice, hints of red wine, and a drawn out, cognac ending. Full body with medium carbonation. Syrupy in the mouth with a big, full mouth feel. Overall this is fantastic. I haven’t had it fresh but I’d saw it was aged perfectly. Big dark fruit, raisins, caramel, toffee, and a smooth undertone of cognac barrel.
4.2 Bottle (Shared by BVery- Thank you!); pours dark amber with a small beige head; sweet aroma of dark fruits, caramel, and a hint of cognac; taste is sweet with more dark fruits, caramel, burnt sugar, and wood hints; dry finish with some lingering dark fruits and wood
4.2 Bomber shared at tasting. Caramel pour. Aroma is super sweet, cognac, booze. Taste follows, this is a monster, super sweet and boozy, but very smooth. The hype is real!
4.0 Bottle thanks to SHIG! Pours a near clear copper with a slight ruby hue and a yellowish tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a strong caramel and cognac with toffee and a bit of booze underlying. Flavor is full caramel and toffee with a good amount of boozy cognac supporting.
4.1 Bomber shared- thanks! Murky reddish orange pour with minor head. Sweet caramel, sticky sweet and boozy. And delicious. Yummy!
4.2 Bottle, vintage dec/2014. Pours dark brown. Aroma is boozy, floral, caramel, nuts. Body is heavy, sweet, sticky. Honey, booze, flowers. Palate is very sweet and long, super warming. Good!
4.1 Batch 2 (2014). The heat on this has completely faded away, and it is smooth, flavorful, and extremely, extremely sweet. It smells like stewed fruits and caramel, and it tastes like sugar-coated fruit cake. Deceptively sweet, like Beelzebub himself.
3.9 Poured from a 750 ml, batch 2 bottle. Aroma is very malt forward with lots of caramel and toffee notes. Some light toasted bread wiht some burnt sugar notes. Some raisin, fig and date notes. Light oak and cognac character with some light alcohol notes. Pours a slightly murky brown with some auburn hues and a medium sized, thick, creamy tan head that exhibits really nice retention as it slowly recedes to a thin film that lingers on the edges. Moderate lacing and long legs. Flavor is very sweet with lots of malt and cognac notes. Layers of caramel with some toffee, toasted bread and brown sugar. Lots of grape notes, raisins, figs and dates. Some medium light oak notes and moderate cognac with moderate alcohol spice in the finish. Lingering cognac, caramel and sugar. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied and somewhat silky with moderate carbonation. Low astringency and moderate alcohol warmth. Overall, the beer is not as hot as I was expecting but its also way sweeter than I was expecting. Its bordering on sickly sweet and the cognac notes seem to accentuate it. More heat, but more sugar and less fruit as it warms.
4.2 At the Barleywine event. B2. Aroma is caramel, toffee, barrel, cognac, amazing. Appearance is amber brown, clear, light brown head. Taste is sweet, barrel, cognac, caramel, toffee, dark fruit, sweet. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy body, light carbonation, cognac and caramel aftertaste. Overall, it’s great.
4.2 Bottle at a tasting - thanks, Kevin! Dark brown color with a small khaki head. Big aroma. Lots of toffee, some ’gnac, roast, molasses. Sweet, hot flavor, dark fruits, vinous notes, roast. Full bodied and low carb, fairly hot which is expected. Intense!
4.6 A deal with the devil b2 Pours a dark ember red-brown colored beer, together with a slowly uprising bubbly, beige head, which then disappears all too soon. After swirling the beer, its thickness becomes obvious at the glass, revealing slick alcohol legs, reminding me of drinking a Whiskey. Complex on the nose, not defined by an overly present barrel though. A vivid, multi layered fruit note mingles perfectly into caramel malts, evoking dried plums, raisins, fermenting grapes and red apples. A toasty nut quality sets itself atop of the malts, soothed by a flowery note. Way lighter on the nose than its abv indicates, due to its awesome balance. Drinks utmost silk, with a nice creaminess to it, complex and rich, creating a long lasting, awesomly well balanced firework on my palate, with a warming ending. Tastes of a glazed caramel maltiness, spiced up by matured, gently bitter hops, creating a dried, sugared orange flavor. Ripe figs, dipped into bakers chocolate and wild honey, enriched by sweet cold pressed coffee get completed by a warming raisin, pepper and clove spiciness. Finishes soft, slighty oaken, with a jammy raspberry and juice grape fruitiness, coated by caramel. A wonderfull sipper. Its not at all over the top/boozy/hot as I expected it to be - instead this showcases an incedible, well nuanced depth of flavors and aromas, which beautifully respond to each other. Another highlight is its mouthfeel. Many Barleywines tend to have a thinner, unpleasant mouthfeel, this does certainly not. It is silk and soft, almost a little creamy, reminding me of having a warming scoop of caramel ice cream.
4.4 January 5, 2017. Bottle, batch #2, December 2014, received in a trade with tom10101, thanks! Dark reddish brown with a small tan head. Aroma is sweet malty and fruity with caramel, toffee, dark sugars, prunes, figs, raisins, cognac. Taste is sweet malty, dried fruity, smooth warming notes. Full bodied, smooth small bubble carbonation, oily texture. Finish is sweet caramel, toffee, figs, raisins, prunes, warming cognac, hints of oak. Great one, nice blend of malt and dried fruits and well hidden alcohol.
4.4 A: Deep brown coloured with a light brown head that dissapates fast N: Fresh figs, dates, cognac, raisins T: Sweet dried fruits, hint of coffee, deep barrel flavours O: Wow! Sweet sticky mouthfeel! Very nice one!
4.1 (Anchorage A Deal With The Devil Barleywine) Bottle 750ml at home, New Years Eve beer, served into a snifter. Dark brown colour on the body, small and thin beige head, low retention. Aroma of malts, dark fruits, cognac, wood, alcohol, vanilla, marmalade. Taste is sweet with malts, alcohol, vanilla, dark fruits, red fruits, marmalade, wood, little bit of cognac. Thick body, soft carbonation. Great sipper.
3.9 Batch 1 bottle. Dark reddish brown. Short initial head. Aroma is oxidised, raisin, orange peel, blackcurrant. Taste is deep brown sugar, dark fruit, chocolate, barrel. Drinkability is better than expected. Very nice.
4.2 Bottle shared at deanso’s. Pours a dark brown/red with a small white head. Sweet caramel malts, red fruits, toffee. Heavy sweet, light bitter.
4.1 Bottle, batch 1, thanks to Ben! Pours clear reddish chestnut, medium creamy tan head, nice lacing. Aroma is rich malty dark sugars, dates, molasses, brandy. Flavor is pretty sweet, light plus bitter, rich and decadent. Full body, rich creamy mouthfeel. Surprisingly not hot. This is a sipper, and a dangerous one.
3.8 B1 Shared by someone At Borefts 2016. thnx for sharing, everyone ! Pours dark, muddy brown. No real head. Smell is rich, BW, sweet , grains. Taste is full, sweet, tad metallic ( in a good way ) Rich maltyness. very nice !
4.1 Bottle thanks to neepsntatties. A: Mahogany body nearly black. Creme head and legs. N: Cognac, cherry, caramel, toffee, cinnamon, toasted malt, biscuit, lots and lots of sugars in here. T: Very sweet. Lightly bitter. Pretty well balanced, surprisingly. M: Heavy sticky body, alcohol burn, fizzy carbonation. O: Really good. This is enormous, and I couldn’t imagine drinking more than a few ounces, but I wonder if it would get as hard to drink as Vanilla Rye.
4.3 Aroma of apple must, ice cider, grapes, vanilla, calvados, butterscotch, caramel, oak and leather. Murky brown with a fast disappearing head. Taste is met with huge flavors of apple, caramel, brown butter, brown bread, licorice, vanilla, light cinnamon with a general nuttiness to it. Big powerful flavors that are very well mellowed out together. Drinks like a 11% barley wine, incredibly smooth and well balanced.
4.0 '14 bottle. The pour is a copper color. The aroma is a sweet barleywine, guessing the sweetness comes from the cognac barrel. The taste has a lot of carmel, boozy and smooth at the same time. A mouthful.
4.6 Bottle thanks to the man Owen! Pours a luscious deep crimson/burgundy with virtually no head. Aroma pops right out along with the cap. Aroma consists of caramel, fudge, slight hint of oak, Cognac, honey, pancake syrup, molasses. Decadent invitation to what is hopefully a party in my mouth. Taste is thick pancake syrup, warming cognac, sweet molasses, sweet caramel, dates, slight vanilla and a bit of leather/oak tastes. Full, syrupy body and deceivingly drinkable for the ABV. It should be a slow-sipper but is so only for the strong willed.
3.6 Bottle at RBBWG 2016 in Antwerpen, bottled in December 2014. Slightly hazy, reddish amber with a tan to white head. Sweetish-malty aroma of caramel, honey and raisins. Sweet, malty and minimally fruity taste of caramel, brown sugar, molasses and raisins, followed by a medium long, slightly bitter, warming and rather boozy finish. Medium to full body, oily mouthfeel. Nice, but rather unbalanced.
