Anchorage Whiteout Wit Bier

Anchorage Whiteout Wit Bier

This is a variation on the classic Belgian Witbier style, but aged in French Oak Chardonnay barrels

Brewed with lemon peel, black peppercorns and corriander (sic).

Triple fermented - first in the tank with Belgian yeast, second in french oak Chardonnay barrels with brettanomyces, and finally in the bottle with a third yeast for natural carbonation.

3.8 750ml corked bottle, 2015 vintage. Funky Brett aroma with notes of coriander, pepper, lemony citrus, oak and white wine. Pours clear pale, golden colored with a thin white head that has good retention but little lacing. Starts tart lemony citrus, coriander and pepper flavors as well as a lively mouthfeel. Finishes dry and clean with Brett funk, oak and white wine flavors. Crisp and refreshing wit.
3.7 Bottle, 650 ml, courtesy of Max. Shared with him, JFK10000 and Miro. Hazy yellow, medium white head. Funky, some wheat, citrus, lemony notes, moderate sourness. Light bodied. Medium carbonation.
3.8 Belgian witbier variation by this Alaskan brewery, aged on wine barrels and spiced with coriander but also lemon peel (rather than curaçao) and black pepper. Bomber shared at Nieuwjaarsreceptie of Gentse Biervereniging. Moussy, irregular, largely stable, egg-white head, cloudy straw blonde robe with olive greenish tinge - looking like a witbier indeed. Aroma of abbey cheese, soap, lemon peel indeed very noticeable, white grapes, sweat, yoghurt, pear juice, starfruit, coriander, some faint wood faraway in the background, hardly any pepper. Crisp, fruity onset, hinting at ripe banana, pear and white grape with something cucumber-like as well, soft carbo, rounded, fluffy and soapy mouthfeel. Bready middle with light wheat sourishness, becoming a bit 'wild' and funky in the finish, with a sweaty touch as well as mild white wine tartness; coriander and lemon peel retronasally, but again little of the black peppercorns. Some lingering, pleasantly bready yeastiness. Could perhaps improve with a bit more aging, curious to see what would come out of that, but in this form already a great beer and a creative addition to the old Belgian witbier or 'blancheke' standard.
3.6 Sample @ Nieuwjaarsreceptie Gentse Biervereniging. Thanks for sharing! Hazy yellow/white colour, white foam. Citrussy, notes of lemon, spices (coriander). Dry and bretty finish. Nice balanced Witbier
3.1 Thnx to the antwerp Untappd crew ! Pours unclear blonde, small white head. Smell is bit of oak, minor brett. Taste is sharp, brett, funk, woody, dyacethyl to a poitnt his is no longer enjoyable, really. Not too great.
3.4 A refreshing beer, as ales come. A sweet note to it, and it isn't too harsh on the palate. It has a strong kick but is still easy to drink.
3.9 backlog. Somewhat cloudy pale yellow. Firm head. Zesty aroma, lemony, black pepper. Dry mouthfeel, somewhat funky and complex. Nice
3.0 Panel w Carpe Kraft. Ładna mętno słomkowa barwa, piana znika szybko i zostaje po niej jedyni obrączka wokół szkła. Aromat słaby, lekko mydlany, trochę nut gumy balonowej, kolendry, ziołowość z piołunową nutą. W smaku czuć na pierwszym planie bretty, średnie wysycenie, ta mydlaność przeszkadza w odbiorze, szybko męczy.
2.1 Reviewed from saved notes. The appearance was a semi-hazy yellow color with a super quickly dissipating finger’s worth of white fizzy head. Quickly sliding lace. The aroma had a huge vinous/white grape quality about it, spritzy lemon/citrus sharp qualities, and light mineral water. The flavor was sour through the vinous/white grape quality and over doing the entire base. Aftertaste was the same and so was the finish. The palate was light bodied with too much sour harshness distracting the overall enjoyment of this beer. Carbonation was also a bit too much. ABV did feel fine. Overall, another overdone beer by Anchorage. Not a true witbier and also one that I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole again.
3.8 Pours hazy light yellow with a medium frothy white head. Aromas of minerals, citrus, bananas, light honey, spices. Taste is fruity and citrusy with mineral notes. Mouthfeel is light bodied with moderate carbonation.
3.9 Pours hazy light yellow with low white head Aromas of orange peel, spices, oak, phenols Taste has notes of oak, spices, citrusy fruits, white wine barrel, phenols, hints of banana
3.3 [8787-20161015] 750mL bottle. Pepper toasted bread aroma. Slightly hazy, pale yellow body with a medium-lasting foamy white head. Light peppery spiced straw flavour. Medium body. Average. (7/3/7/3/13) 3.3 (w/ jercraigs, mds)
4.1 750ml bottle pours out a hazy straw color topped with a white head. Nose is nice pepper lots of spice going on belg yeast some candy notes. Taste is more of the big pepper notes a blend of magic spices and a great finish.
1.9 Bottle from Liquor Barn into a pint glass. Aroma of coriander, hay, and basement aromas. I did not enjoy this at all.
3.7 Cloudy and hazy yellow with three finger head. Peppery aroma, wheat, lemon and spice. Lemon zest, peppercorns, a bit of heat and malted wheat/corn. Clean and balanced wit. Really really clean. So true to style that it almost comes across as dull. It’s still great though.
3.4 Poured from a Batch 1, May 2011, 750 ml bottle. Aroma is light with some hints of wheat and light honey notes. Light citrus with faint pepper and coriander. Light pineapple and tropical fruit with hints of an earthy must. Pours a crystal clear, yellow straw color with a medium small, somewhat thin, white head that exhibits alright retention as it recedes to a thin film that lingers on the edges for a bit before disappearing. No lacing or legs. Flavor has a light sweetness with hints of wheat and honey. Light citrus notes with lemon and orange. Light coriander and hints of peppercorn. Some light tropical fruit and pineapple notes with hints of an earthy must. Some lingering honey notes and citrus. Medium low bitterness. Hints of chardonnay and oak. Mouthfeel is light bodied and a bit watery with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, I’m not sure if its the age or not, but the beer is thin and the flavors and aromas are very muted. Its an ok beer, and clean, but it is lacking life.
4.2 Appearance: hazy pale straw with two fingers of rocky white head, good retention and moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: lemon zest, coriander, straw, white pepper. (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate funky tart, mild-moderate bitter. (9/10) Palate: medium-light body, lively carbonation, bone dry funky finish. (4/5) Excellent - Brett funk dominates over a pale Witbier base. This is my kind of beer! I don’t know how much I believe that 20 IBU, though: it feels a bit more bitter than that typically implies, possibly because of the astringency from the Brett. In fact, the flavours are more like a Saison or a Tripel, than a Witbier. Any way you slice it, though, this is a really good one. (17/20)
3.5 2016-10-15. Very lightly hazy yellow body, with a nice foamy white head. 3++ Aroma has a melange of spice notes. Pepper amongst other things. Reminds me of sausage somehow - not in a meaty way but the spicing. Flavour has similar spice, bit of grassy notes, light alcohol and muted fruit. Average bodied palate, good carbonation. Enjoyable. 7+/3-4/7/3/15 Bottle from Premier Gourmet, Buffalo. "There’s some funny owl videos on YouTube."- mds
5.0 Based on style this is the prize winner for a wit. Poured into a tulip glass developing a big three fingered clean white head with hyperactive carbonation and soapy bubbles that Pop and fizzle yet remain pillowy in the glass. The appearance is a hazy yet vibrant sunshine golden yellow. The aroma is uniquely complex with the white pepper, lemon zest, coriander, straw, and a slight undertone of mellow buttery Chardonnay. In terms of taste this is a equally complex With yeast, wheat, lemon, coriander, pepper, and soft butter notes from the Chardonnay. Delicious and funky.
3.9 Bottle, shared at game night. Hazy pale yellow, huge white head that leaves thick sheets of lace. Aroma of pig manure and leather. Flavours of pineapple, leathery funk, and pepper. Bone dry. Fantastic.
4.0 It pours pale yellow with a white head. It has various aromas with pepper, some funk (earthly) lemon, coriander, light wheat, and hints of citrus. It has flavors of lemon, spice, pepper, coriander, citrus with zest, low wheat, low earth, and hints of vinous quality. It has a medium-light body with a tart dry finish. There is a fairly high amount of carbonation. Overall, the additional of brett with the combination of other elements makes this one of the best witbiers that I’ve tasted. The elements are in harmony with each other and it has the right touch of tart with the dry finish.
3.7 750ml corked bottle pours a hazy straw color with a generous white head that retains well and leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is lemon zest and coriander with some hints of oak and yeast. Taste is a spicy hop bitterness with a light lemon tartness and a fruity and malty sweetness. Medium bodied with abundant carbonation that tickles the tongue. Overall, a bold brew for the style, but balanced and tasty. Recommended.
3.7 Bomber shared by Paul. Anchorage whiteout brett witbier 6.5% A very light gold with a filmy wisp of white foam. A wheaty lemon and spice aroma with a light ultra dry body and wheat, brett, lemon and green hops but very minimal witbier character. More an American wheat than a belgian wit but good.
2.0 Pours a pale golden color. Super big white foamy head. Not much aroma. Slight citrus aroma. Taste is very light. Slightly hoppy slightly lemony. I can’t get a handle on this. I guess it might be a nice Witbier. Not my thing
4.5 Aroma’so more like a farmhouse. Super easy drinking. Slightly sweet finish. Refreshing. Balanced.
3.7 Bottle from a friend. Golden color, white head. Bitter taste with citrus, yeast, earthy notes, grass, a bit of oak and spices. Bitter finish with citrus, yeast, grass, oak, spices and grass. Excellent witbier.
3.6 750 ml corked and caged bottle. Aroma is funky brett, lemon, lotion, dusty basements, old books, floral, chalky candy. Pours extremely pale yellow with a thick soapy white head with great retention. Taste is dry with flavors of brett, lotion; I can taste black pepper, but don’t think I would have noticed it without it being mentioned on the label. Likewise, I can pick out the chardonnay now that I know it was aged in barrels containing it, but I’m not getting the oak itself. No coriander that I can tell, either. It’s actually kind of bland. Well, it alternates between being interesting from the brett, to a watery blandness that I’m not used to with well made examples of the style. Mouthfeel is champagne-level foamy. It’s not bad, but it’s a bit of a letdown from the description on the label.
