Andechser Weissbier Dunkel

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel

AKA Andechser Dunkles Weissbier

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel has been the perfect completion to the Andechs monastery brewery’s range of products since 1997.

This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note (original extract: 12.5%, abv: 5.0%).

3.7 Pours dark brown with a big beige tinged head. Aroma has notes of caramel and banana. Nice creamy mouthfeel, some banana, and caramel sweetness. Very pleasant on a hot day!
3.7 Dunkles Braun, schöner schaum, etwas cremig im mundgefühl riecht malzig etwas nach Banane, im Geschmack malz Karamell Banane, garnicht mal so schlecht
3.8 Bottle from the brewery, drunk with an excellent pizza salsicca from Donatello. Dark brown hazy with a big head. Banana yeasty nose, not as amazing as their standard on tap, but with some roast aroma. Flavor is less creamy as well, but still a huge complex banana-Weiss flavor, with some added light caramel/roasty undertones. An excellent Weißbier!
3.3 Dark mahogany color with beige frothy head that quickly subsided. Malty caramel slightly sweet flavor with medium body. Slight banana yeasty ester flavor in background. Well balanced with very subdued hops. No bitterness.
4.0 Bottle at home, 9th May 2021. Pours a chestnut brown. Aroma is caramel, yeast, banana and spice, fresh and some floral notes. Taste is caramel, malts, roasty, slight spice and clove, banana, really well balanced and delicious to drink. Probably come of the best Dunkelweizens I have consumed
3.2 500ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours clear-ish very dark brown with frothy beige head. Aroma: roast, banana, light caramel. Taste: light to moderate sweet & bitter, wheat, caramel & bananas. Medium body with frothy carbonation.
4.0 Reminds me of the time I wandered into the kitchen when my German grandmother had just finished baking wheat bread and decided to take those nasty overripe bananas on the counter and put them to good use by baking them into a dessert bread. How the Germans make these beers dark and delicious without making them heavy and filling is one of the pleasant mysteries of life. From a half-liter bottle with a date of L0560, which may mean it was bottled about 14 months ago or best by 14 months ago. Either way, it was still quite tasty.
4.0 500ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Dated as best before 7/02/2021. Served into a weizen glass having been warming from refrigeration for about 15 minutes. The beer pours a dark brown maroon colour. A huge off white head, quick to dissipate. Lots of sediment visible. Light bleeding through the edges. A lovely aroma. Sweet. Rock candy, roasted malt, bread dough, light banana, light bubblegum, light clove. It is the rock candy aroma that leads, as it is with the taste. Sweet with just a touch of light bitter. Rock candy dominates. Bread dough and light banana flavours. Some limited clove. Lots of roasted malt. Very tasty, driven by sugary flavour. In the mouth the taste lingers for a short time on the palate. Mainly sweet, but with that light bitter ever present. Fairly full bodied for the style. Overall, a very tasty beer. If this was readily available in London I’d probably drink loads of the stuff.
3.3 Bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours very dark brown with medium off-white head, cloudy. Aroma of roasted malts, banana, bread. Light tarty taste with bitter aftertaste, medium body, average carbonation.
4.1 Bottle from Beers Of Europe. Pours a very very dark brown (Coca Cola) colour with a large thick creamy beige head. High carbonation. Strong aromas of banana and cloves, brown bread, wheat, caramel and yeast. Fantastic smell. Taste is the same notes as the aroma with added hints of bubblegum. Medium to full bodied with a very slightly oily mouthfeel. This is a great beer and arguably the best Dunkel Weisse i have tried.
3.7 Sehr dunkle Farbe, dunkler Schaum, ordentliche Menge Hefe - optisch schon mal toll. Im Antrunk herb-malzig, im Mittelteil kommt dann die Süße etwas durch. Recht weich, recht lecker. Viel, viel besser als das helle Weizen von Kloster Andechs.
3.7 Pours a cloudy, deep brown coloration with a huge, foamy head. Smells of doughy, toasted malt and an estery spice note of clove, with lighter banana and perhaps just a hint of straw coming through. Taste is a good balance between slightly sweet'ish doughy, toasted malt, with a very light roastiness, estery spice/fruit and light hoppy accents, with the clove and perhaps a hint of white pepper clearly dominating here and lighter banana notes, as well as just a hint of citrus and straw. Finishes slightly tangy with a light bitterness and some clove and banana lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation. I was quite surprised just how close this is to their regular Weissbier Hell, with the malts feeling a bit more toasted and a rather light roastiness, but apart from that the flavor profile is very much the same. Maybe that's to be expected, but I would have wished for a little more roastiness and generally fuller character, while I also think that that certain tanginess in the finish is even less becoming here than in their Weissbier Hell.
3.4 Beer with dark brown color, clear aspect, soft bitterness, weizen style, soft carbonized, good volume of foam on top, (shared a 50cl bottle beer with PG, bought at "Kaufland", Neckarsulm, DE #1108)(#168 DE)(#79 Bavaria).
3.9 Bottle. Poured a clear dark brown color with a large tan head that was mostly lasting and produced excellent lacing. Good banana, sweet malt and spice aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy complex dark sweet flavor with a medium to heavy dark sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Solid drinkable brew.
4.0 Bottle in Germany. Pours a dark deep brown with huge and stable white head. Fruity nose, yeast, maltiness. Tastes grainy, yeasty, fresh, balanced. This is a great fresh taste. Nice!
3.9 caramel and banana. Balanced with the roasty almond oats that are present. just a tad thick, but a good amount of carbonation to counter act it. I like this quite a bit.
4.0 Aroma is spice, caramel, and ripe banana. Very tall light tan thick head with an ice cream top from a moderate to gentle pour. Dark brown / cola color, moderately carbed. Head retention is quite long. Keeps the ice cream cone top as it very slowly recedes, leaving some lacing, but not a lot, and most of which slides down back into the head. Taste is dark malts with the ripe banana and clove-like spice in the foreground. Caramel flavor appears in the middle, mixing well with the banana and spices. Wheat tanginess lingers on the tongue in the finish and aftertaste. No bitterness at all. Body is moderate to somewhat thick, with only a very slight tingling from the carbonation. Finish is dry and spicy. Easy drinking, with each swig inviting the next. Excellent, all the right notes, flavorful with a nice balance among the flavors. Highly recommended.
3.3 50 cl bottle @ home, served in a tulip glass, due date: 2019/12/28. Aroma: quite powerful aromas of caramel, cereals, brown sugar, toffee, dark dried fruits, figs, prunes, raisins, biscuits, banana, spices, clove. Appearance: dark copper to brown color with deep beige to light brown foam made of small sized bubbles. Very high head thickness with high retention and medium Brussels' lacing. Medium haziness. Taste: medium sweetness, low bitterness, low sourness. Flavors of caramel, banana, spices, clove, brown sugar, dark dried fruits, figs, prunes, raisins. Hints of smoke, burnt sugar, burnt caramel. Balance is toward the sweet side but it is well balanced for the style and not cloying at all. Mouthfeel: medium body, oily to almost creamy texture, low to medium carbonation, quite long bittersweet finish with low to medium sweetness and bitterness and the same aforementioned flavors. Alcohol is very well hidden and only noticeable because of its throat and mouth warming. Astringency is not noticeable. Overall: good appearance, quite good aromas and flavors of caramel, brown sugar, banana, clove, spices, dark dried fruits, figs, prunes, raisins, biscuits. Flavors are not so powerful as one would expect from the aroma. Not bad but probably it would be better with a little bit more of body and carbonation and more powerful flavors.
3.6 Dark brown with a frothy beige head. Malty, bread-like smell with a caramel note. Roasted malty taste with chocolate and spicy whisky notes. Medium carbonation.
3.1 Bottle. Hazy deep amber color with a medium sized frothy off-white head. Aroma of caramel and ripe banana. Sweet taste. Medium body. A bit oily feel.
3.2 Poors copper/brown with a huge head that lasts. The banana-and-cloves that are typical for Bayern Weizen are hardly present and mostly replaced by a touch of smoke and by (burnt) caramel. There is some dark forest fruit in the background but the beer does not come alive for me. As sson as you start eating pork meat with bread or Potatoes, it's a different story. Then the beer is a perfect partner.
3.6 Pours mahogany with full, light tan head. Aroma is caramel, roast and wheat. Taste is plum and carranel, moving to almonds and roast. Finish is roast and wheat. A good dunkelweizen.
3.9 500 ml bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of burnt caramel, wheat, earthiness, light tobacco and a hint of dried fruit. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of caramel, wheat, earthiness, tobacco and light dried fruit with a crisp dry lingering caramel tobacco finish.
3.4 Hop fruit berry malt aroma. Dark brown slight red clear colour great head and lacing. Malt chocolate fruit flavour. Smooth palate.
3.7 Had this at Andechs am Dom, Munich, Wednesday 29th May 2019, not sure if this was bottle or two dispense, I just asked for it and it was served. Pours a hazy conker brown colour with a cappuccino coloured head. Cocoa and a touch of banana on the nose. These two show more so in the mouth, though the cocoa is actually more milk chocolate. Soft in the mouth, excellent beer.
3.8 Tan head, mahogany with ruby highlights. Dark fruit, heavy italian red wine grapes, underripe banana aroma. Dark malt, even carafa level of roast, but just a bit. Minimal phenols. Roast sets it apart from other examples.
3.3 500mL bottle. Pours a nearly-black dark brown with a a large, foamy beige head. Aroma is dark fruit, banana, toffee, and a little chocolate. Taste is toast, toffee, banana, some caramel, light spice, and slight cocoa. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Slick mouthfeel.
3.8 Dark brown with a creamy sand colored head that subsides but lingers for the duration. Chocolate banana aroma with noticeable clove and a yeastiness that trends towards old shoe. Taste is sweet, a touch spicy, yeasty, with a mild, dry bitterness at the end. Chewy feel and yet it goes a bit watery at the finish. Overall, solid for the style.
3.7 A 16.9 oz. bottle appropriately dispensed to a weizen glass by Chuck at Lunar Brewing Co. showing a dark brown color, with ruby highlighting, persistent, tan fluff, and wavy, spiraling ribbons of lacing. The nose was malty, toasted, slight chocolate, caramel & toffee, dried & pit fruit skins, and light banana & spicy phenols. Medium bodied, with decent carbonation that faded, the taste was similar notes, adding some mild, fruity tanginess, and a bit of finishing dryness. Benchmark Dunkel.
