3.8 355mL bottle poured dark brown with red highlights in the light and a creamy thick beige head with nice retention and lacing. Aromas of roasted malt and chocolate and a hint of coffee. Taste is roasted malty sweetness and chocolate balanced with some coffee and hop bitterness in the finish. This is an enjoyable tasting experience.
2.9 On tap at Anderson Valley in August 2009. Reviewed from notes. Pours near black with a light mocha head. Some lacing. Nose brings forward faint hints of chocolate and coffee along with a bit of a buttery toffee. Taste brings a bit more butter, which is quite unpleasant. Coffee and roasted malt cover up a bit, but not enough. Feel is of a moderate body and somewhat dry. Not one of their better offerings. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 10-07-2010
3.9 Woo-hoo!! Que buena porter. This is the darkest shiznit. Very good and most dry
4.0 That’s a damn nice porter. Pours deep brown with a thin cappuccino head and some clings. Lovely mocha aroma with some vanilla. Nutty, chocolate, caramel in the taste with a lingering coffee finish.
3.0 A reddish brown porter with a thin light moka head. A sweet funky chocolate malt aroma, nuttella notes, a bit of mashed peas. In mouth, a caramelly chocolate with very nutty notes, oily mouthfeel, medium bodied. On tap at J. Ryans, August 29, 2010.
3.6 A good porter, not as rich as I was expecting, but good none the less. Enjoyed this one with GMK and Brenton at the Wheaty for the SABSOSA presentation.
3.7 Bomber. Pours super dark, garnet red along the edges but otherwise brown and opaque, with a large foamy brown head. Aromas of milk and dark chocolates, coffee, molasses, toffee, a little alcohol, and oak and vanilla. Flavor is roasty cocoa and espresso, cane sugar, a touch of vanilla, and bitter coffee in the finish. Pretty high carbonation, with a dry finish. Good beer with a nice roasted quality; this could be better, but it’s too carbonated for the style, for me.
3.8 Bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black, with a tall creamy attractive and lacing khaki head. Deliciously inviting aroma thats very solid and on style. Notes of vanilla, licorice, chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee. The flavor is very nice as well. It is similar to the aroma with a bit of a dark fruit quality to it. Medium dry roasty finish. Medium bodied with low carbonation. Overall: this beer is just spot on. So balanced, so perfectly to style. Its simple and yet still complex. Just an outstanding example of a porter. This will be joining SN Porter as my go to, simple perfect porter.
3.5 Sample at the tasting room on 8/9/10. Pours darkest brown with a thick tan head. Chocolate aroma with hints of roast and sweet licorice. Sweet chocolate flavor with some bitter roasted malt and licorice on the back end.
3.2 Deep brown to black color, semi-translucent. Aroma of brown sugar and sun-dried tomatoes. Flavor is sun-dried tomato and pizza, but very subdued and drinkable. Interesting brown to say the least. Bottle from Barrios at the PreLabor Day Beer Tasting.
3.4 Pours is brown with light tan head. Aroma of malt, vanilla, chocolate, hint of licorice, Similar taste, but more bready. A bit thin compared to the aroma. Guess I’ve had too many imperials tonight to give this its due credit.
3.6 Pours dark brown with some nice lacing. Very mild on the palate. Could totally drink this with some meat pizza. Lighter in body than I would have expected from the nose. Not such a bad thing though. It was pretty easy drinking. Tobacco, chocolate, and coffee. Mocha dessert.
3.3 Pours dark brown with a light beige head. Aroma of tobacco and sun dried tomatoes. Lighter side of medium bodied with a slight watery texture. Flavor is similar to the aroma. I taste sun dried tomatoes and tobacco. Weird. I well..fuck it. Somewhat different for a porter.
3.2 Pours a fading beige head with a chocolate brown body. Aroma is toasted malt and milk cocoa. Mild, subdued roasted and cocoa notes. Finish is thin and needing. A tobacco note.
3.3 Dark brown body with lasting tan head. Chocolate and then some coffee notes in the aroma. Roasted notes also come through in the taste, medium body, good carbonation and nice lacing. Quite a nice porter.
3.1 Biege coloured head very dark porter red brown tinge aroma coffee vanilla mild chocolate milky flavour the malty tastes are mildly dry chocolate caramel has a rich touch cocoa smooth coffee finish decent malt flavours dry bitter aftertaste not bad
3.5 Dark woody pour, nice head, lots of lace. Creamy coffee aroma. Smokey, with a bitter coffee and a hint of smoke. Some nice dark chocolate flavors, nice carb. A bit of CO2 tartness at the end. Tasty brew, but not spectacular.
3.4 22oz bottle at The Bayou Appearance: Pours almost black with a nice tan head, leaving nice lacing in the glass Aroma: Roasted malts, chocolate and nutty Taste: Roasted malts, nutty and chocolate Nice porter.
3.0 22oz in mug. Deep chestnut with medium, lasting buff head. Nose is ginseng, licorice, vanilla, slight metallic. Flavor is a bit dull; some roast, light caramel, and herb. Mouthfeel is pleasantly thick but finish is resinous. Meh. I feel like I really want a porter to be either gentle and sessionable or a palate-busting, tongue-scraping flavor bomb. This does neither, it’s just kinda... beer.
3.5 Dark brown pour with tan head and lace. Coffee and light chocolate aroma. Roasted malt and light chocolate flavor. A tad thin and watery but very drinkable.
3.8 Black pour. Funky but fine yeasty coffee aroma. Roasty flavor with coffee and grassy hop notes that develop nicely on the palate. A touch of Coca-Cola in there too. A very good porter.
3.0 Roasted and coffee notes... A lot more smokey than a lot of porters I’ve had, not a bad offering, but I’ve brewed better porters... Anderson Valley makes much better hoppy beers
3.7 solid black, thick creamy tan head. Aroma of roast chocolate malt, mild citrus. Taste is milky sweet with some sweet citrus and very little burnt/coffee bitterness on the finish. Medium body, thin creamy texture, soft carbonation.
3.7 Pours a very dark chocolate/chestnut brown color with amber edges when held to a light source and a frothy 1.5 finger tan head that slowly fades into a thin ring. Minimal lacing. Deep roasty aroma with hints of chocolate malt, roasted coffee bean, toffee, caramel, hazelnut and toast. Overly carbonated up front, biting the tongue followed by a slightly roasty, creamy chocolate malt center and a bitter earthy dry finish. Hints of roasted coffee, toffee, oatmeal, milk chocolate and dry earthy hops. Kind of sweet mid palate with a dry bitter finish.
3.6 Dark brown ruby-tinged ale with a fluffy tan head. This is a traditional English style porter, so it’s not a stout calling itself a porter. Bitter chocolate and cream with a little charred malt sourness at the finish. Nice porter that goes well with food.
4.0 Really quality porter. Packed full of great malts and subtle hopping. Pour deep dark brown. Drinks really nice with really full flavor. Excellent brew. The marts are really amazing and rich.
3.4 Pours deep black with tab head. Not much aroma. Good roasty flavor with a bit of toast on finish. Pretty standard porter but nice and drinkable.
3.8 22oz bottle. Aroma is a bold, rich one of chocolates, a touch of coffee. Flavor is creamy, rich. Smooth mouthfeel. Appreciate the lower alcohol content. Pretty fantastic!
3.6 Big dark porter with tons of dark chocolate flavors. This was a tasty brew. I loved the finish this was and is going to be a sought after brew from now on for me.
3.6 Pours a deep dark brown color. Aromas of chocolate, coffee and a hint of hops. Flavor light chocolate, coffee, and a touch of tobacco. Medium body with a smooth dry finish.
