Antares Barley Wine

Antares Barley Wine

The romantic term "barley wine" is used for the beers with an alcoholic content similar to the one of the wine. Of color bronze, the Antares Barley Wine is a hard licorosa beer and maltose, with an intense frutado accent, that remembers white grapes to us, originating of leavenings.

3.4 I actually really enjoyed this beer. maybe it’s because argentine beer isn’t too killer so it’s relative, but it’s strong and does the job.
3.2 Bottle labeled as Antares Barely Wine, not Simpatico. Pours an orange colour with a small white head. Aroma is quite malty, caramel, some fruit, notes of straw and hops. Taste is also malty with caramel and fruit leading to a moderate hoppy bitter finish. Slight burn on the way down. Not bad.
2.8 bottle from mondial 2012, mtl. pours medium dark golden with a nice white head, decent retention and lacing. light toasted malts, some caramel, some yeast, lightly hopped - grassy-citrusy, some sweetness. average carbonation, medium body. meh-ok.
3.5 Sampled at the brewpub. A really crisp beer beer that has really warming malted base. The best brew they make.
3.4 Beer #9 at the Mondial de la Bière 2012 (June 8), bottle. Beige gold, small head. Aroma of burnt caramel salty notes of spice and herbs well malted. Barley taste slightly sweet, slightly hoppy, 10% alcohol well hidden. It is easy to drink, but good!
2.6 Bottle. Pours golden, with a nice, full head. Very hoppy aroma with lots of pine and resin, almost drowning what little malt comes through. Flavour is very fruity, with a lot of hoppy bitterness, but here there’s in addition some lightly burned, caramel malt. This would be a very good APA or even IPA, but the hop domination of the malt has got to affect the rating of this as a BW.
3.4 SMÖF 2011. Golden beer, small head. Vinous aroma, alcohol, some fruits, raisins, figs. Vinous flavor, some glue, alcohol, sweet fruits.
3.5 2008 vintage, sample @ SMÖF 2011. Pours clear dark amber with a small off white bubbly head leaving some lacing. Aroma is sweet, raisins, madeira, fidges, fruity and alcohol. Flavor is fruity, alcohol, raisins, bitter, fidges, madeira. Has lost some of the character I’m afraid. Finishes bitter, fruity and a bit sweet.
3.5 Sampled at SMÖF 2011. Pours hazy brown with a small white head. Smells and tastes nutty and abit cheese with a similar finish.
2.8 Clear copper orange color with reasonable lacing. Mild aroma of caramel and earth. Taste mostly caramel with a grittiness/earthy taste. Weak edge for a barley wine.
2.3 750ml bottle poured into my Rodenbach tulip... Pours a light brown, with a golden hue. A decent white head leaves a finger cap, good lacing... The aroma is floral alcohol. A hint of malt. A very faint bw aroma, but very boring... The taste is equally bland and boring. Malt with a hint of alcohol and hops. Finish is very chemical. This is not very good and not worth trying. Pass
2.1 Low carbonation, for the abv it doesn’t pack much alcoholic or flavorful punch.
3.2 750, capped. Thanks, Mark! Pours a murky medium brown with a loose tan head that dissipates quickly. Malty, toffeeish, somewhat butterscotchy nose. Sharp vodka twang as well. Sticky medium body, lots of malt, big candy bar presence with lots of caramel and toffee. Hot and dry finish. OK.
2.6 19th March 2009 Slightly hazy amber beer. Soft and smooth with a brief visit of sweet malt before giving way to unsubtle alcohol. Doesn’t really taste like a barleywine to me. What I had was ok but I had no interest in finishing the bottle.
2.7 Disappointing. Pours a light copper brown with a good head and excellent retention. That’s the best part of the beer though. Not much at all on the aroma. Mouthfeel is thin. Not much malt flavor coming though. Grassy, pine resin aftertaste.
3.3 Bomber from Viti in Vancouver (old rate). Light copper colour. Taffy, grassy nose with some evident alcohol. Lingering, pleasant aftertaste. Decent but below average.
3.5 so, Simpatico must just mean Simple, because its just that .. . Pours a medium tan gold, with quite good foam, great lacing .. . abv is very very well masked .. . not overlly complex, some honey, cereal, nuts, dough, and twisted non sweetened vanilla, with a touch of dust .. . A decent beer but for being 10%, gets extra points.. . I’m Dink, Bud Dink. You can call me Mister Dink! And this it my wife, Tippy. Most people call her Mrs. Dink, but I usually call her on a telephone!
2.3 Not the best tasting beer. Murky yellow amber color. Very intense alcohol flavor.
3.0 Clearish caramel liquid covered by a uniform, rather dense, tiny-bubbled off-white head. Highly grainy, a bit green aroma (despite being well over a year old) with orange marmalade, leafy tea bag and strong cereal notes. From the scores (I could not be impartial after finding a bottled BW from Argentina, I had to check which brewery it was from), I expected something thin and highly boozy. While it’s not thick for a 10% beer, it possesses a certain caramelly/cereal/bready substance and masks its alcohol quite nicely. That’s not enough to make it a great beer as it fails to delivers the expected complexity from a sipper, shows a timid, mildly leafy bitterness and remains a very sweet and not very drinkable offering. Still, I don’t remember its exact price tag, but I’m positive it was under 10$, so that would make it a worthy try.

3.6 Bottle, 75cl, as Simpatico. A clear, golden beer under a small off-white head. Malty, bready nose with a roasted hint. Fruity hops and citrus-peel and alcohol as well. Malty and bready flavor too, with resiny hops and sweetness. Full-bodied and warming. Lasting bitter finish with sweetness. The alcohol is too evident in this one and it somehow feels a bit one-tracked, still it’s a good example. 090822
3.6 Bottle at SMÖF -08. Hazy yellow with a thick white head. Malty and fruity tones. Alcohol, malt and fruit. Full body with a long, warming, bittersweet finish.
3.1 Thanks to whomever brought this to The Bruery’s Beer Geek Show & Tell. Fruity, estery, kind of a mild flavored barleywine.
2.6 Botella, as "Antares Simpatico". Sweet bitter alco bit fruity aroma. Golden colour. Sweet malty and alco fruity flavour.
3.6 Bottle courtesy of Ibrew2or3. Pours amber. Nose is very fruity, esthery, malty, mild booze. Flavor is fruity, come citrus and floral hops going on, some spicy yeasty flavors. Not bad. Probably the best barley wine in Argentina :)
3.4 courtesy of ibrew2or3. Highly underrated BW. pours amber, dark head. Aroma of caramel with hints of herbs Flavor, caramel, spices, malts finish had some possible sourness to it hinting to tartness. Some elements are well done while some of the BW aspects are a little to be desired.
3.0 The color is golden and the head is creamy. The aroma has notes of malt, alcohol, fruit, mostly grapefruit. The mouthfeel is quite oily. The flavor has sweetness and notes of alcohol, grapefruit and malt. IMO it’s a bit monotonous.
2.5 Bottle. Golden body with a medium off white head. Sweet malt, fruit and light hops in aroma. Flavour is alcoholic, sweet malty and light fruity. Not very pleasant and unbalanced.
