Arcadia Big Dicks Olde Ale

Arcadia Big Dicks Olde Ale

Big Dick’s is a classic English-style Olde Ale. Sweet and full-bodied malt flavors are complemented by a fragrant but mild hop bitterness. Sweet, bready malt aromas combine with rich flavors of dark fruit, brown sugar, caramel, and sweet nuts. Truly a beer for the ages, Big Dick’s Olde Ale matures gracefully in the cellar as fruity, estery flavors and mineral notes emerge while the hop bitterness gradually subsides. Delightful on its own or as a digestif with a hand-rolled cigar, Big Dick’s is a delicious pairing for hearty good and cigars alike.

3.3 bottle. 2010 vintage. amber with minimal head. sweet caramel and toffee malt. some fruitiness, raisin, etc. alcohol is pretty evident.
3.8 Wow. Pours a golden amber. Lots of malty toffee notes. Very floral aromas that come through on the flavor. This is a big beer. Hat at Goehner's octoberfest.
3.7 Bottle pour thanks to umich03jm. Pours a murky amber color with a thick, velvety head of beige foam. Aroma is toasty, like that of glazed pecans. Sweet. Taste is nutty with some soft prune sweetness floating in. Dry and sweet on the finish with a tingle of heat on the back of the throat.
3.8 12oz bottle, shared with Alicia. From Party Town. Totally hazy, red / brown color. Good thin beige head. Decent arcs of lace. Bigger body. Good, light crisp carbonation. Clean, kind of dry finish, just a lightly sticky body. Good big red candy - fruity aroma. Lightly spicy. Tropical fruity / spicy hop. Bigger bitter taste, little sweet. Hint of alcohol bite in the finish, not bothersome, though. Not the most complex, but a tasty and relatively easy drinking old ale
4.6 Tried the 2010 batch and it was delicious! Very flavorful! Nice and smooth. Dark brown color.
3.1 Thanks Mike. Burnt red appearance, 3 finger off-white head. Nice mocha and oak nose. Taste is sweet and a bit of cheddar. crisp finish, has a barleywine sort of bitterness. rasisins and cinnamon as well
3.4 Pours a slightly hazy amber brown with 1 finger head that quickly dissipates leaving minimal lacing. Caramel aroma with a hint of toasted malt. A touch boozy. Hops are pine and herbal hops. Mildly sweet with moderate bitterness. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation. Long bittersweet finish. I like this brew. I’m sorry it didn’t get a better rating.
4.4 2010 bottle. Aroma & appearance are admittedly diminished by age, but the mellowing of the flavor more than makes up for the more vain characteristics. I ended up being very impressed by this beer; enjoying it immensely and finishing it far quicker than the style deserves. Fresh, sweet apple juice on the nose; a surprisingly appealing attribute. Faint, but it strongly implies the quality of the flavor. And, more importantly, the flavor doesn’t let you down. Rich & full bodied but aromatic & smooth in a pointedly fruity (but not too sweet!) sort of way. Rarely can such a flavor profile be accomplished. Thank the lord for patience; this one proved the worth of aging.
2.3 broken out for the blizzard. Rust red and brown color. Hard to pin down due to the style but this is mostly malty with caramel and a lil touch of green fruit. Decent light carbonation that livens it up just a little. average.
3.3 1/24/13. Bottle. I enjoyed this more than most people I think. Pours a dark sort of off-red with a thin white head. Aroma is very crisp, very sharp, very fruity, earthy, sweet. Taste is likewise very crisp, much fruitier than I expected, sweet caramel, only a very little bitterness. Some small lacing. Medium-high carbonation. Chewy mouth feel. Billed as an old ale, this caught me pretty well off-guard. A lot more crisp and fruity than I am used to for the style. But for all that I didn’t entirely agree with, it was still tasty and drinkable. I would drink another.
2.4 Bottle. Pours a murky copper color with a slight light tan head. Not a whole lot going on in the flavor, just a little caramel. Medium mouthfeel. The taste is ok but very muted. Slilght sweet start that trails off leaving only a slight bitter note. It’s not terrible but not great either.
4.0 From BandC. 2010 Vintage. Shame about the low rating this gets I thought it was lovely. Caramelly malt, moderately boozey, dried fruit flavors. Tends more quite drinkable to super complex. Serving: Bottle
3.7 This bottled brew from rbsg #47 poured a medium sized head of foamy with a frothy top bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a hazy dark orange colored body. The aroma was old ale and musty. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of old ale. Delicious and one I would certainly like to have again.
3.4 Bottle to snifter. Looks solid; a murky orangish-brown with off-white lacing. Smells and tastes semi-sweet, malty, and a little hoppy with an average mouthfeel. Alright.
3.9 Very sweet malty smell and taste. Finishes with a sherry type back end flavor. Hops are present in balance. Very complex beer.
4.2 Pours with a nice head that slowly dissipates. Orange color and chunks. Must be naturally carbonated though the bottle doesn’t say. Nice caramel flavor with alcohol evident but well blended. Good flavor.
3.0 Aroma is mint and very malty. The flavor is fruit, heavy malts, some dirtiness and an alcoholic finish. Didn’t care for the dirtiness, was decent otherwise.
4.1 Def a beer that doesn’t hit you right away. Revel in its complexity with yeasty flavours including bubble gum in the aroma, but a ripe fruity flavor. A unique old ale. 2010 vintage.
3.3 Copper colored and cloudy with a malty butterscotch aroma and a thin tan head. Rich and malty sweetness with hop balance in the finish.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy coppery brown with a finger or two of head and aromas of fruit and brown sugar. Flavor is OK, but seems a little overly fruity and not quite sticky enough. There is a nice spiciness there that adds a little something unique, but this is a pretty run of the mill Old Ale.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a cloudy, deep amber with absolutely no head and lots of chunks of sediment, like flecks of black pepper. Aroma is quite sweet, some mustiness, lots of caramel, some toffee, cherries, prunes, orange. Smells like a mild double bock. Flavor is cherries, prunes, orange, lots of soy sauce, toffee. Sweet up front; very long bitter finish. Some alcohol on the tongue. Surprisingly thin mouthfeel. Think I’ll cellar a few of these.
4.0 It poured a copper color with a small beige head. The aroma was of malt, bread, caramel, grass and some alcohol. The taste was similar, with fruit up front and a light hop finish. A very good Old Ale.
4.1 Great amber tinted body with a thick, three centimetre tall tan head and some beautiful ruby tints - very nice looking. Aroma of pungent must, mushrooms, alcohol, pit fruits, prunes, brown sugar, oranges and a touch of spice (mulling spices//allspice, cloves, canella). Full-bodied; Deep rustic malty flavour with a ton of caramelised sugars, prunes, pit fruits, must and a little hint of chocolate. Aftertaste is quite sweet with only a hint of malt, some alcohol and a touch of the musty, basementy flavours. Overall, a great beer and a bit more ’refined’ than typical Olds, this one shows a lot of barleywineish qualities and a ton of sugars, less so of the pungent flavours - but it worked out great. I’m glad I aged mine as much as I did and wish I would have kept it another year or so - this one developed rather nicely. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Siciliano’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 06-November-2010 sampled at home in Washington on 31-May-2012.
3.1 12oz bottle pours darker amber color with whitish head that leaves no lacing. lots of sediment in this bottle..lots of sediment. the aroma of sweet malts and cherries and mild alcohol. the cherry aroma is almost sour but not quite...the flavor is a mild alcohol burn with a big plum and some backside of cherry flavor...i get plums and prunes all over this beer. knowing its the same fruit but prunes stand out for some reason. the malt flavor is overly sweet.
2.9 Pours a reddish brown with decent tan head. Aroma of sour malt with a touch of alcohol. Has a taste trying to be like a Trappist with a bit of smokiness at the finish. A bit too sour.
3.2 Vintage 2010. Murky reddish-brown pour, no head. Sweet butterscotch like aroma but it is very faint. Pleasant taste but nothing special. I taste cherry, butterscotch, and brandy. Slightly sticky mouthfeel. Decent but I’ve had way better old ales.
3.6 Bottle purchased at Siciliano’s Market in Grand Rapids, MI in December, 2011 and rated on 4-03-2012. Bottled on 06/09/10 and label shows the ABV being 9%. Pours a small smooth ivory head that was mostly lasting with spotty amounts of lacing, transparent body, fizzy, fast-rising carbonation, and an orange-brown hue. The Aroma is very malty, sweet, caramel and alcohol. The Flavor is semi-sweet, malty, caramel, mildly hoppy, alcohol, and a semi-dry short finish. The Mouthfeel is tingly and this is a medium bodied Old Ale. Overall, this beer is very quaffable, the 9%ABV was not overpowering and I enjoyed the way the Aromas and Flavors came together. I would definitely drink this beer again if it came my way. More please!!
3.6 not shure the age of this but it has(2010-right on the front-duh) quite a bit of dust and am pretty shure its at least a few years old, kind of a murky light brown but with orange and red highlights, lots of head. complex malty aroma of carmel/malt sweet toasted malt coconut vanilla, yeast breadiness slight spice fruit and some hops. Taste has a barleywineness to it with sweet malt.carmel.oak vanilla some fruit more in the ripe orange type than tropical kinda plum like though and cherry with brown sugar butterscotch, a little alcohol and dryness, yeah pretty malty and with big carmel presence,if you like that its well rounded with a pretty good bittering.Slightly hoppy.not bad.
3.4 A cloudy reddish brown beer with a small off white head. The aroma is nutty malt and toffee with some alcohol. The flavor likewise is nutty, malty, with a little grain and alcohol.
3.3 Pours somewhat hazy brown with a solid finger of beige foam. Aroma is sweet and malty, dark fruit and toffee. Feels a little thick and syrupy with some woodsy, wet leaves notes.
