Arcadia Jaw-Jacker

Arcadia Jaw-Jacker

This spiced amber-wheat ale is our celebration of the arrival of Autumn. Using the finest malted barley and a small amount of wheat for mouthfeel, Jaw-Jacker displays a brilliant orange-amber color, despite the absence of pumpkin in the recipe. The addition of cinnamon, all-spice and nutmeg (in the exact proportions of a family pumpkin pie recipe) creates a refreshingly spicy, season brew.

2.8 Draft at the stone street tavern on stone street . Pours light tan color with a very sweet aroma. Very artificial pumpkin pie flavor. Eh
3.5 2oz taster on tap, at HopCat Broad Ripple. Clear golden orange color. Thin off-white kind of creme-coloured head. Full sheet of lace. Great floral, kind of spicy, mildly citrusy aroma. Definitely get nutmeg, reminiscent of a pumpkin beer. Moderate sweet, light to moderate sweet, kind of spicy. Solid, interesting stuff. I can dig it.
3.3 Draft to taster at Arcadia in Kalamazoo. Looks good for the style; a fairly transparent orange with eggshell head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells of pumpkins nutmeg with a bit of citrus from the hops. Tastes like it smells, but less balanced, and zestier. Average on the palate with a medium-bodied mouthfeel. Solid, but smells better than it tastes.
3.5 Julie says too much nutmeg and allspice there is a bit of a hop bitter bite not really a Julie beer. She gives a 2.0
3.6 I like this seasonal beer. My other fav is Dogfish Head Punkin. If you enjoy a pumpkin ale you should enjoy this flavor packed beer from the D. Clive and other seasonal spices are very prevalent. Enjoy. Cheers! - Steve
3.1 Lots of spices with tart like finish. Enjoyable but probably a little too overdone on the cinnamon.
2.7 Poured a hazy amber colour with a thin head. Sweet and spicy aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Maybe notes of clove and pumpkin, but spices are fairly overwhelming. Taste is primarily malt with the cinnamon and ginger spice. A slightly bitter aftertaste ends this crisp medium brew that is easy to drink, yet disappointing for pumpkin seekers.
3.0 12oz bottle from Wine Academy. Poured a deep orange-amber with a rather small foamy light beige head. Aroma starts off with some sort of vomit-pumpkin mixture that is overrun by nutmeg and allspice. Body is medium to slightly fuller with strong tingly carbonation and an average to quicker fading, for the strength of the taste anyway, aftertaste. Flavor is all allspice and nutmeg up front, followed by some earth and candle. Meh.
3.1 Murky solid orange pour with dense but short offwhite head. Strong aroma of nutmeg and allspice, some cinnamon, sweet chai tea, faint hints of metallic noble hops too. Low carbonation, creamy mouthfeel, bitter but clean finish. Taste is similar to the aroma but stronger noble hop presence, noticeable ginger, yeast is present too and somewhat belgian, wheaty, banana. Well done but a bit sweet to call a favorite personally.
3.2 Best part is the aroma. Nutmeg and clove... It’s pretty spectacular. Like chain tea and Apple pie.... The taste is weird. Hoppy enough to have a refreshing bite with the spice taking a back seat... It’s like an oktoberfest mated with an apple pie and the confused offspring somehow became alcoholic...
3.0 Bottle thanks to Tony. Poured clear amber with min head. Aroma full of spices. Light carb med bod. Similar taste to aroma. Over spices. Heavy handed
2.8 From bottle. Pours light amber orange. Very little carbonation or head. Nice speaking spicy smell. More cider than pumpkin pie. The taste reflects the smell. Malty lite body upfront and then finishes very spicy with an apple tart finish.
3.6 Sample at Buckeye Beer Engine on 9/14/14. Clear amber pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, malt and allspice. Malty flavor with ginger, cinnamon and allspice before a slightly bitter hop finish.
3.7 Probably one of if not the best pumpkin spice ale. So smooth and drinkable would buy this again
3.1 Pours a cloudy orange. Aroma and taste are spices, pumpkin, and some bready malts.
2.4 Tap: Tinted amber & light copper with a mildly beige, thin layer of foam on top. Aroma is mostly heavy ginger & clove with a strong cinnamon afterbirth. More spiced than pumpkin itself; I think the ginger is a little overpowering. Or maybe it’s the clove. Taste is the same way, perhaps a little *too* spicy. Definitely the ginger but there’s an awful lot of clove, too. Mildly metallic aftertaste with a slightly bitter spiciness. Thin mouth feel. Much better autumn options exist.
2.5 This beer pours a slightly hazy orange color with a small white head that fades quickly to a minimal ring. The aroma is a strong blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove, and the hint of pumpkin and caramel malts almost gets lost in the spices in the nose. Once sipped, this beer’s lackluster quality comes through in the barely-there flavor. What is tasted is slightly sour and a touch sweet, and the aftertaste is purely cinnamon. The palate fuses a nearly flat carbonation, slick texture, and a medium body, all of which don’t make this lacking beer gain any more points in my book.
2.6 I hate pumpkin beer and this is why. Really strong nutmeg and cinnamon flavor. Smells like nutmeg. Not much pumpkin flavor. Had at Kay's dugout
3.4 Nice spicy pumpkin smell. Hits strong. Spices, sweets. Pumpkin bread. bready. pretty good. Citrus hippiness.
3.0 Not a memorable beer. Not bad but kind of weak on the finish. Nice aroma but wish it had a bit more bite
3.4 Pours cloudy, medium orange, very slight head, dissipating thin lacing. Aroma clove, pumpkin, allspice, toasted malt, brown sugar, cinnamon. Taste pumpkin puree and slight bitter clove up front, then allspice, slight graham cracker and brown sugar sweetness mid mouth, finishes balanced. Mouthfeel medium body, low to medium carbonation, slight spicy bite, balanced finish, maybe slightly dry. Overall different, tasty, plays up the spice and clove, more allspice, not much cinnamon or nutmeg, slightly resembles a saison, I like this beer.
2.9 12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured hazy, copper in color with a minimal white head that dissipated quickly, no lacing at all. Aroma of spices (cinnamon and nutmeg). Taste is more spices, it’s also quite sweet. Not too sure about this one, interesting but more like a one time deal to me...
3.6 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, fall 2014 bottling. Pours lightly hazy bright orange color with a 1 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with god balance and solid complexity of dark/bready malt and spice notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Light earthy spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness and solid complexity of dark/bready malt and spice flavors; with a good malt/spice balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very solid spiced ale. Good balance and solid complexity of dark/bready malt and spice flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A bit one dimensional, but nicely enjoyable otherwise.
3.0 Aroma is cinnamon and nutmeg. Taste is sweet and malty, and has a nice light hoppy bitterness. A pumpkin beer without any pumpkin in it. Surprisingly good though.
3.2 Bottle, pours a hazy rich orange color. Aroma consists of pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg. The taste is pumpkin, spice, citrus and wheat.
3.2 Yum! Clear orange color and smells more pumpkin than spice. Not as much pumpkin as I expected.
2.6 Reviewed from notes. The appearance had a golden clear brown and left a small white head. Though the body was extremely clear, there was no carbonation was seen rising. The smell had nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice up front and dominating every aspect of the aromas. The taste was pretty much the same. Some pumpkin came out in the taste as it warmed up. On the palate, it sat at about a light and felt great on my tongue. This is an extremely drinkable beer. Overall ok, I know its not a true "pumpkin ale," but I can see certain seasonal aspects how some would think this is since the pumpkin only came out once the beer warmed.
2.7 Draft at beer fest. Pours clear orange with a medium sized white head. The aroma has pumpkin puree but limited spices. The taste is light pumpkin, not complex.
2.7 Aroma is spices and perfumed sour/sweetness, can’t tell if its pumpkin or yam. The flavor is spices, citrus, mild wheat notes and the same sour/sweetness from the aroma in the finish.
3.1 Amber pour with a thin white head. Aroma is nutmeg, cinnamon and pumpkin pie. Taste is nutmeg in abundance with cinnamon in the finish. Little watery.
