Arcadia Shipwreck Porter - Bourbon Barrel (2011-)

Arcadia Shipwreck Porter - Bourbon Barrel (2011-)

The Baltic-style porter has a robust malt character and a slight herbal hop bitterness. Aged for 12 months in 10 year old Kentucky bourbon oak barrels, this alluring dark liquid features appealing undertones of vanilla, oak, cocoa and coffee. This aging occurs in abandoned mines in Michigan, at a constant temperature of 45F.

4.2 355ml bottle (thx, Chris S.!). Pours an almost black with a dark beige head. Aroma is sweet with whiskey, barrel, molasses, some chocolate notes. Similar taste. Very nice.
4.1 Bottle. Woody bourbon, chocolate malt, and dry hay aroma. Dark brown with minimal head. Moderately sweet chocolate, vanilla, toasted bread malt, bourbon, and moderately bitter dry hay flavor. Great body and blending. Delicious.
3.1 Bottle shared with Frank. Vintage 2015. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt, slight apple, booze, oxidized, eh. Appearance is dark brown, light brown head, poured thin. Taste is oxidized, roasted malt, coffee, booze, barrel, not good. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, oxidized barrel aftertaste. Overall, horribly disappointing.
4.1 The Twelve Beer of my #6000 celebration (#12 of 13 - six beers on either side of 6000 and the milestone itself). Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, two centimetre tall light brown head that fades relatively quickly. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, light chocolate, bourbon, oak, vanilla, tobacco, caramel and a light dose of soy sauce. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong roasty flavour with a great chocolate flavour along with some cacao power, toffee, pit fruits, oak, vanilla and some smooth coffee notes near the end. Aftertaste is robust and very complex with some tobacco coupled with a lot of caramelised sugar notes, pit fruits and the oak really lengthens out the flavour with vanilla, bourbon and some smooth malt and peat notes. Overall, a very nice beer with a great flavour and smooth and deep complexity that hits all the right notes; If there was one thing I’d complain about, it’s the body which is a touch thin for the style, but the complexity and flavours more than make up for it. Nice to sample, and the time in the bottle probably helped out this one a bit. I sampled this foil topped, twelve ounce bottle purchased from Seaway Party Store in Grand Haven, Michigan on 09-September-2015 for US$8,49 sampled at home in Washington as #6005 as my #6000 beer celebration on 28-March-2017.
4.2 12 ounce bottle from flandersned. Thanks! The beer is a thick black with a khaki head of foam. The aroma has big honeycomb and and boozy sweet caramel. Sweet taste with a huge bourbon character that stays up front throughout. Thick, viscous mouthfeel. Big body and moderate carbonation.
4.3 Tap at Hop Cat, Detroit. Pours the murkiest chocolate syrup brown, with a gorgeous tan head. Aroma is lots of bourbon, chocolate, toffee, booze, fig, BBA Barleywine notes. Gorgeous. Love that nose. Flavor is smooth bourbon (almost nitro notes), chocolate, coffee, fig, toffee, vanilla. Loving this one.
4.1 Bourbon galore & it’s fantastic! Beautiful black pour w/ a lasting tan head & nice lacing. The aroma is primarily bourbon w/ some oak & vanilla coming through. The flavor is mainly slightly sweet bourbon, booze, & a hint of porter bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is very light yet it’s still a sipping beer. Powerful & worth the $7 for a 12 oz bottle experience!
3.9 Bottle at home. Nearly black pour with very little head. The aroma is raisins, oxidation, fudge, whiskey, oak. This is full bodied and viscous. Flavors of ripe red fruits, vanilla, butterscotch, wood, cocoa powder, char. Light acidity on the finish. Very good.
3.7 Pleasantly different. I believe this was the first barrel aged porter I’ve ever had. Though high ABV it didn’t overwhelm and I was especially happy to find the vanilla flavor coming through.
3.8 Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted malt, molasses, vanilla, some dark fruit, & bourbon notes; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, dark chocolate, vanilla/caramel, dark fruit, and some bourbon; Warm finish; Pretty good but was expecting more.
3.9 Bottle thx to Benzai, small sample. Dark color, short frothy head. Aroma of roast, vanilla, bourbon, raisin, bit chocolate. Malty bitterness, vanilla sweetness, cookie bourbon, bit booze. Nice.
4.1 Bottle @ home shared with Caesar. Opaque pitch black color, average sized beige to light brown head that diminishes fairly quickly. Aroma is malts, bourbon, vanilla, bourbon rum soaked raisins. Taste malts, bourbon, dark overripe fruits, dark malts and bitter. Full body, medium carbonation. Very nice.
3.9 12 oz bottle pours black with a brown head. Aroma of bourbon, coffee and toffee. Taste is bourbon and chocolate
4.2 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a head of foamy finely sized brown colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque except at the edges dark black brown colored body and an excellent lacing. The nice aroma was bourbon. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering mild roasted malt aftertaste. The strong flavor contained notes of cucumber roasted malt bourbon and chocolate. Delicious and one I would certainly like to have again.
3.8 Black pour with tan head than fades to leave a thin film on tol of beer. Sweet aroma. Flavor is nice with vanilla, chocolate, and coffee with a nice bourbon touch. Palate is light enough to not weigh yo down but is not overly thin. Good body for a porter. One of my wife’s better random purchases.
4.4 Near black pour. Aroma is sweet molassus. Taste is molassus and brown sugar with alcohol finish.
3.0 This beer is just ok. BBS need to be thicker. This beer does better than most.
3.9 Aroma caramel, chocolate, vanilla, woody, Appearance black, tan foam, Taste medium sweetness, lightly bitter, Palate full body, average carbonation, Overall a very smooth well balanced barrel aged porter that aged very well. No alcohol taste. I would suggest this beer to a friend.
3.7 12 oz bottle from Tavour. Nose is chocolate, light bourbon, and vanilla. Black with a medium tan head. Flavor is bourbony, with vanilla and chocolate. Nicely flavored, better than the aroma by itself.
3.8 (bottle) clear, bright, dark brown colour with a small beige head; aroma starts with wet wood, jam, develops into vanilla, dried fruit; rich, balanced flavour with a long, light bitter finish, well hidden alcohol
4.3 Review is of a bottle that was aged roughly 2 years Pours a black body with walnut highlights. Head is sand colored and 1/5 of an inch. Head retention and lacing were pretty good. Smell is of molasses, brown sugar, charred oak, fudge, and slight bourbon. Hops arent present but alcohol is definitely there. Taste is pretty sweet for a barrel aged baltic porter, getting molasses, chocolate covered cocoa beans, some vanilla and oak. Alcohol is smooth for a 12% barrel aged porter. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice frothy head that stuck around for a long time. Carbonation levels were good also. Overall this was an amazing beer that kind of took me by surprise. Tons of flavor melded beautifully with the bourbon barrel. Alcohol was restrained but still had a nice warming presence. Dont know if aging two years mattered that much but will try getting some fresh ones to compare.
1.6 On tap at patricks in moon. Big & black. Somewhat neutral aroma. Big strong initial boozy impact. A little more rude than I was expecting. Big volatile kick in the jaw. Quite ruff indeed. Coarse around the edges. Difficult, almost like floor stripper. If there is any co2, I’d say its well hidden by this nasty impact. A strong over th top alky beer experience fer sure. Did not like.
3.8 Pours black with low tan head. Aroma of bourbon, lots of it, chocolate, some roasted malt, dried fruits, muscovado. Taste is sweet and sticky, bourbon and chocolate, with a lingering alcohol warming finish. Rich, smooth body with soft carbonation.
4.3 Aroma is vanilla and light oak perfect overall. Taste has a light oak sour with a sweetness and malt thickness. Very nice. Nice dark with a head that fades quickly. Mouthfeel is perfect. I WILLL look for this one again. Amazing.
3.7 Tap. Black with small head. Very bourbon forward with dark chocolate and coffee malt notes. A bit hot, but nicely complex.
3.4 12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter. The body is very dark red brown and clear but nearly opaque in the glass. Aroma: Almost completely dominated by bourbon and bourbon barrel aromatics. Very woody and boozy. Flavor: also dominated by the bourbon barrels. The woody aromas were very strong, these didn’t much impair the aroma; but I normally find even less barrel flavor to detract from beers. Not so here. Still, this is a beer only for those who like low ABV aged bourbons. Of course, for a beer this is quite boozy, although the 12% alcohol is partially hidden in tasting.
3.9 12oz bottle thanks to drfabulous Pours dark brown with a medium sized tan head, good lacing. Aroma of oak, dark malts, chocolate and leather. Taste of dark malts, bourbon, oak, cherries, some hot alcohols Nice and tasty
3.6 Pours black with very thin brown head. Light carbonation, lots bourbon and vanilla in the nose. Flavor is smooth but thin on flavor. Lots of bourbon, not much beer. Drinkable though.
4.1 A - Black/Brown tan head, some lace S - Oak woody, Bourbon nose T - Bold, spiced, some hop but big malty, alcohol notes. Complex. M - warming boozy finish O - This Porter aged well. It has some bite in the alcohol, and some spic
3.7 Dark brown color. Off white head. Slightly sour nose with lots of bourbon and some chocolate malt. Fairly nice sweet mouth with decent alcohol burn and bourbon. Decent but fairly straight forward. Good.
