3.2 On nitro tap at Ashley’s in Ann Arbor. Hmm, initial taste is urinal cake. Can’t untaste.
2.9 Smells malty, real nice dark color, has a thick creamy looking head and looks thick. Its very dry. Unexpected.
3.5 For being labeled a sweet stout I thought this was rather dry. A: was ok. A: was probably the best thing about it, beautiful. T: a little flat, lacks umph. P: not a thick as you would want from a stout. O: not a bad stout but it could be so much more.
3.1 Tap nitrogen. opaque black color with creamy small head. Minimal toasty nose. flavor is chocolate and some coffee. medium to light palate. a little rough but nice.
3.7 On tap @ beer exchange. Pours a solid black with a creamy white head. Taste is roasted malts, chocolate. Texture very creamy smooth. Pretty thin and dry for an oatmeal stout. Odd metallic taste in the finish. Overall though not bad, would drink again.
3.9 A complex hop body sits under a pillowy, dank white head. Foam is long in this one, with a slight carbonation and a nice malt balance.
3.6 Enjoyed at the Map Room in Chicago, IL while celebrating a friends birthday. I didn’t take tasting notes for this one, but I remember this being a pretty good, standard frothy stout. Appearance is pitch black with a frothy, creamy white head. Aroma of chocolate malt and lactose. Taste is creamy and smooth with chocolate and light coffee notes, also a subtle hint of nuts. Good stuff.
3.1 On tap at Jac Cekolas, portage mi. Dark black pour, offwhite head that's dense and in appearance. Smells of sweet Carmel malts and creamy oats. Smooth mouth feel with little carbonation. Roasted Carmel in the flavor with a touch of bitter, licorice maybe. Finish is laden with spices, allspice or nutmeg. A little dry too.
2.8 not bad but bitter and high roast. need to tame it down a bit to make it more approachable. more chocolate less black malt
3.3 Dark pour with an espresso head. Aroma of chocolate and roast. Taste is very bitter. I think this beer suffers from a little too much roast.
2.6 Draft. Pour is black with a thick frothy head. The aroma is light with very little malt. The taste is pretty thin on flavor, but a mouthful. Wanted more from it.
2.8 Pretty heavy roast character with some backing chocolate. Flavor has heavy roast and is a bit acrid. Too dry and astringent.
2.7 A lot thinner than I was expecting, initially didn't like it, but the taste kinda grows on ya thru by then end, probly wouldn't ever get a second one, would probly be a lot better on nitro
3.5 At Maproom. Mostly tastes like a dry Irish stout with some of the burnt bitterness replaced by sweetness from the oats and a silky feel. Decent stuff really. Serving: Tap (Nitro)
3.6 Draft to 10 oz pint at Arcadia. Looks good; nitro characteristics. Smells mildly malty. Tastes like it smells with a creamy pleasant mouthfeel. Solid.
3.9 On tap at Rochester Mills...one of the silkiest, creamiest stouts I’ve ever had. Excellent stout.
3.7 Nitro Draft at Villains. Pours deep black with a tan head. Nose is softly chocolate and woody hops. Soem faint roast peaks through as well but overall is a bit subdued. On taste, has a nice creaminess that lends it to appearing sweet though not overly so. well balanced and nicely roasted with a full malt profile. Surprisingly solid.
2.8 12 oz. bottle at home poured into a Delirium snifter. Standard stout aromas of coffee, chocolate, toasted malts. Body is a little thin. Flavor is standard for the style, and mirrors the nose. Finish is under hopped, could use a stronger bitterness. The only thing out of the ordinary on this one was that the oatmeal gives it a pleasant smoothness and creaminess. It also adds a lactic note to the finish. Ordinary.
3.3 On Tap (NITRO) at The Map Room. Pours dark with traditional roasted notes of coffe and cocoa. The oatmeal makes a nice dry appeasrance at the finish.
3.4 I had this on tap at Ashleys, a bartender recommendation...It pours nice and black with a full creamy head that has really nice lacing, my hopes are high...The aroma is really dead, hard to pull anything out but a little roast coffee, my hopes start to fade...The taste is better than the aroma, it has a light flavor but not much here and its super thin to drink. This is nothing more than an average oatmeal stout. Had this on draft at Arcadia, and its much better. Original score was 2.8.
2.8 Nitro tap. Very mild aroma... Some smooth malt and chocolate. Medium body, smooth. Taste is a bit off, kind of sour vs the expected sweetness. Just okay, but I’ll try again.
3.2 An oat malt stout, as opposed to the more common non-malted oatmeal variety. This was a silver medal winner in the 2003 World Beer Championship. Very dark in color, it opens up very nicely as it warms. The nose is the standard coffee aroma, from the chocolate barley, with a cocoa head that dissipates a little too quickly. The flavors are complex, however, as you roll it around the tongue. It almost has a lactic feel to it, with a little silkiness from the oats, but I also detected hints of grape and plum, in addition to the expected coffee and chocolate notes. There is a definite hop presence, but it’s not too firm. The lingering after-taste is mainly malt and sweetness. It’s a very nice stout and pretty standard for its style.
3.7 On nitro tap at Frisco Grille (Columbia, MD): Pours an opaque black with a creamy, full-lacing beige head. Has a muted, but lightly sweet dark caramel and chocolate malty nose. Starts with a creamy fullness and some light malty sweetness with a touch of bittering hop balance before a semi-sweet toasty finish with a hint of coffee roast. Well-balanced and very drinkable with mild complexity.
3.9 Pours dark black with a thick light brown nitro head. Roasted barley and chocolate malt in the nose. Ultra smooth mouth-feel, medium-bodied with a dry finish. Chocolate malt flavor, dry-roasted finish. An outstanding oatmeal stout. Very satisfying.
3.5 Pours a deep brown with minimal head. Not an all around awesome stout but easy to drink.
3.6 On tap @ Map Room. Pours black with a large tan head. Roasted malt and chocolate in the flavor and aroma. Smooth, sweet, and creamy body. Solid.
3.3 Draft at Arcadia brewpub. Pours an opaque black. Huge tan head that is very smooth and creamy. The head reminds me of Guiness. Very nice lacing. Overall great appearance. Taste is of roasted malts. Like a very mild expresso. Unfortunately the taste and palate don’t live up to expectations. Palate is very light. Was really expecting it to be more robust. Overall I enjoyed the beer, but based on some of the other offerings that Arcadia had I just was expecting more. Maybe I’ve been drinking to many Imperial stouts lately.
3.8 Draught. Well I’m interpreting this as a dry stout because that’s what I thought it was. Anyway I thought it was damned fine. Nice aroma, silky smooth mouthfeel, lots of roasted malts, great stuff. I’m an outlier on this one rating wise but I don’t care.
3.1 Tap at Sunswick. Pours jet black with a thin beige head. Nose is light with some roasted malts and oatmeal. This is a thin mouthful and thin to medium bodied. It’s light up front and easy to drink. Some of the malt and oatmeal notes come through in the middle-finish. Some dark fruits are also in the finish which really carries the majority of the flavor. Ends reasonably bitter. Not bad.
3.3 this was the worst beer of the night for me. maybe it’s hard to judge it considering it was also the weakest beer of the night. just kind of thin and lacked flavor.
