4.2 Appearance: clear medium amber with one finger of dense light tan head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Aroma: caramel/toffee, pine, woody, citrus, tobacco, mild vanilla, hint of spicy rye. (9/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, strong bitter. (8/10) Palate: medium-full body, moderate carbonation, lingering bitter finish. (4/5) Big oaky bastard with huge maltiness that is nevertheless just barely sufficient to balance the massive bitterness. Subtle, it ain’t, but man, it’s good. (17/20)
3.2 Pours dark amber red with a large khaki head. Head retention is great. Lacing is decent. AROMA: malty, caramel, lightly woody, brown sugar, herbs, floral, herbal hops, roasty, citrus, earthy funk, smoke, vanilla, light spice and slight molasses. TASTE: malty, caramel, lightly woody, hop spice, brown sugar, herbs, coriander, roasty, citrus, earthy funk, smoke, vanilla, light spice, boozy and slight molasses. AFTER TASTE: malty, hop spice, herbs and coriander with a light bitter mouth feel and lightly boozy finish.
4.4 12oz Flasche. Braun-rotes Bier mit schönem Schaum. Hopfebittere, Vanille und Eiche in der Nase. Sehr rundes schweres Bier. Lecker!
2.7 Ruby red in color. Large white head with nice lacing though out the glass. Big malt, and vanilla in the aroma. The flavor is the same with malt, oak, and vanilla
3.5 650ml bottle pours amber in color with a 2 finger cream colored head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is pine with caramel, herbal and woody notes. Taste is a pine and herbal hop bitterness with a caramel malty sweetness. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, this is a nicely crafted brew, which is a definite improvement over the original. More mellow and smoother.
4.3 It's Arrogant Bastard with the edge taken off a bit. The oak is subtle but had an Arrogant Bastard before so could taste it but wonder if came first. I wish more oak on the aroma and palate though. I think I like it more than the original though.
3.3 Bomber poured a clear deep brown hue w/ a huge creamy beige head and sticky lacing. Mild malty aroma. Initial flavor is light sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish. Tastes are fresh oak, peppery rye, piney hops, and caramel malts. Medium bodied and creamy mouthfeel.
4.1 Poured from the bomber into a shaker. Dark mahogany/copper color with a foamy tan head. Aroma is quite mild - there’s some sweet malty notes with a hint of vanilla and roast and just some general earthiness. Flavor has some bready malts but they are masked by the hop bitterness. Not really getting any of the typical vanilla notes from the oak. Somehow the softness that usually comes with oak aging doesn’t exist with this beer; instead the oak seems to accentuate the pineyness of the hops and give the beer a little more bite. Medium bodied with a long finish and mild astringency. If I were blind taste testing this I’d swear it was a different recipe with higher IBU’s but regardless it is superior to the traditional brew.
4.0 Tap. Pours light cloudy amber with tobacco creamy beige head, lasting head, some sediment. Aroma is yeast, sugar, old hops, vanilla, dry oak, fudge, fruity berries, strawberries, candied sugar, toffee and tobacco. Taste is malty yammy caramel, sweet and really toasty, raisins, oak, vanilla, red berries and tobacco. Dry finish, light bitter hops to balance out the sweet malts.
4.0 12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass very cloudy mahogany in color with a nice head, leaving a solid lacing on the glass, slight smell of bourbon, tasted kind roasted nuts and caramel with a slight bourbon burn at the end of the sip
4.0 Backlog from old tastenotes: Aroma is malty and hoppy, and there are hints of wet wood. Taste is malty with a hoppy-ish and vanilla-wood sensation. Warming finish with some pine and dark fruit.
4.0 Bottle at Haket. A very muddy look, dark and with granules of oak(?). Aroma of strong, malty ale and whisky, at least a hint of oak. Taste is complex and rich. A surprisingly good ale!
3.9 Bottle: BB is partially obscured but is last year. Nose is vanilla, oak, slight bourbon quality, sweet cherry, cream, very sweet cola, extremely appealing. Taste is malty, smoked, oak, bitter resinous hops, slight licorice hint of vanilla, leading to a woody, almost salty, bitter finish. Mouthfeel is slick. A nice beer, but not as outstanding as the nose implied.
3.7 Old rating. The oak chips help balance out the giant malt and hoppiness of the bastard. Still nice dark fruit and sweetness. Strong stuff, not mind blowing but good.
4.0 Bottle poured into a tumbler..copper color with a fluffy white head..aroma of pine,resin,wood,caramel..sticky,hoppy,earthy..good stuff.
3.8 Meh, underwhelming, cheap enough though. Not buying again, not worth it. many others to try..
5.0 Everything in the Arrogant Bastard plus the oak. I liked this better, but I like oak. Not too big on oak so good! It seemed the oak helped balance out the caramel I complained about in my AB rating. Perfect brew in my opinion.
5.0 Finally had this, loved the regular arrogant for ever, this one is great big hoppy and malty in both nose and flavor, evident oak throu out! Oak added and did not take away from experience! Perfect guys!
3.9 Archer's, Dayton, OH, draft. Tastes like bourbon. Creamy white head. Bitter and hoppy. Brown.
4.2 Dark copper body, with a full, pillowy white head. One of the most beautiful looking beers I’ve ever laid eyes on. Aromas are pine cones, and wood. The flavours also feature the pine and oak, but caramel malts are shining through as well. There is also some earthy dankness in the mix. A dry bitter finish rounds out the pleasure of drinking this one.
4.4 12fl oz @ brauhaus, Edinburgh. Body is deep ruby amber, big particles, head is medium tan creamy mostly diminishing excellent lacing. Nose is honey, aroma is oak chips, rotten wood, leaves, light licorice. Light sweet, medium to heavy heavy roasty bitter, later more hoppy. Medium to full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Excellent dessert beer, easy to drink, very interesting, perfect balance.
3.6 Pours fuzzy amberbrown . Smell is sweet , bitter . Hints of oak . Rather thin mouthfeel . Bitter , raisins ( very intense ) .
3.7 undated 12 oz bottled served in a large Austrian glass mug [from notes] Pours a cloudy orange-brown with a moderate tan head. he creamy head has very good retention. Spicy hops, a floral note, roasted barley and a woodsy hint of oak in the nose. There is more than a hint of the woodsy oak in the taste, and more hop flavor than I expected given the aroma. Moderately bitter, with some detectable sweetness early on. A lasting, malt- and oak-tinged hoppy aftertaste. Medium+ body; good carbonation, but perhaps a tad high. O - a richly flavored beer with no obvious flaws. I enjoyed it and can see why some others have given it high ratings, but the flavor profile was not entirely to my liking.
4.1 355 ml bottle, cellared for several months. Dark copper body, with a medium, creamy, beige head. Aroma with loads of dried fruits, vanilla, biscuit, some berries, oak. Taste is pretty hoppy, with citrus, berries, stone fruits, pine, tea, imbedded in lots of smooth malts, like caramel, vanilla, biscuit, with nice, subtle, dry oak notes. Medium, oily mouthfeel, with an average carbonation. In the finish there are lots of dry oak notes finally, with bitter, zesty hops and subtle malts. Tasty! Complex, multifarious and really smooth to drink, all with a quite moderate ABV. The dry oak notes add another enjoyable level. Great beer with a lot of character and good drinkability at the same time!
4.3 Clear, copper-red-brown beer with a lot of yeast parts in the beer. White-beige, three finger high, fluffy, head thats leaves a LOT of lacing on the glass. Almoust chunk of head left! Nose: Butter, smoke, oak, wood, vanilla and hops. Taste: Bread, caramel malt, dried fruit, molasses, grapefruit and oak. Body: Medium to full body. Great bitterness. A beatiful beer with an ABV of 7.2% that is very well hidden. Great taste and mothfeel! I recommend it!
3.6 Deep amber/copper pour with a 3/4 inch long lasting light tan head.. great lacing. Big bitter smell and pine/citrus polished off with freshly sanded wood ... toasted malts and fresh biscuits. Taste is BIG. BITTER with enough sweetness to balance nicely. There is a looong finish here. Creamy cocoa, vanilla, harsh pine needles and grapefruit bitterness, just simply a thick thick thick palate ... sooo many things going on here ... when said and done, a dry piney/lip smacking woodiness sticks around for ages.
3.7 Appears a dark garnet hue and makes a thick creamy offwhite head. The in-your-face chinook hops that are present in regular arrogant bastard ale are nearly gone here and replaced with a very smooth oaky/vanilla. Flavor is very round about the most well balanced I have ever seen from a Stone product. The elements of the chinook hops are again subdued by a velvety layering of vanilla. This is very rich. Medium to full body on the palate with a very creamy finish. I really wish this were a regular offering, it is incredible.
3.8 Dark ruby color with a thin beige head, hazy, Aromas of oak, dark fruits, vanilla, alcohol. Taste is sweet with caramel, dark fruits, oak, alcohol, vanilla, smoke. Aftertaste is really nice and sweet. Medium to full body with low to medium carbonation.
4.0 Rated based on notes taken 22 Dec 2011 -- I don’t have many notes for this one other than I gave it a 4/5.
5.0 22oz bomber one of greatest brews ever...been drinking since they were in San Marcos .nice balance of oak malt hops and the whole shebang. I need not say more...get this stuff.
