Arrogant Crime

Q: “What do you call it when Greg takes his entire harvest
bounty of chili pepper varieties from his own personal garden, take half of
them and add to…and thus ruin…an otherwise beautiful oak barrel of
Double Dry Hopped Lukcy Basartd Ale?”

A: “A Crime!”

3.7 Haters gonna hate, but as disappointing as this Stone tasting was compared to expectations, this one I actually liked. But I’m a pepper guy. Hazy amber with a small tan head. Big hot pepper aroma, earthy, caramel, citrus hops. Flavor has caramel malt and loads of heat. Most other pepper beers are weak, but this one really brings it. Medium-full body, slightly syrupy. Legit!
2.9 On tap @ Stone Brewing Berlin. Comes with a hazy brown amber color with a little brown head. The nose ist malty and oaky with nice aromas of bitter fruits like grapefruits, citrus and orange-peel combined with caramel and roasted nuts. Taste of grapefruit und orange peel (like the nose), some raisins, some nuts and then a lot of spicy chilli peppers! Only citrus peel and spicy chilli pepper on the finish. On my opinion too much spicyness. But it has a nice effect: the palate becomes more sensitiv, so the next beer (in this case an IPA) become more intensiv.
3.6 This is a very nice offering from progenitors of arrogant ale. Very oaky chocolateall the way through., The peppers really come through on the nose, almost smoky. Sweet, earthy, spicy, delicious. just the right amount of carbonation. Bottle 500 ml. $20 02-27-17
3.3 Sampled this rather extreme novelty at the Columbia World Beer Festival 2017. From a bottle poured a murky brown appearance, which was reminiscent of chocolate syrup mixed in water, yet was strangely appetizing. Aroma was that of sweet licorice and Bourbon barrel with some spicy vegetal notes of the pepper becoming apparent. The pepper flavor was surprisingly balanced and not overwhelming; I was able to distinguish notes of habanero and ghost pepper specifically, which were a nice complement to the sugary caramel malt base. Notes of vanilla were also present. The hot pepper finish was likewise not excessive; and I don’t recall any booziness being apparent. Overall the taste was as good as expected for this unorthodox combination of bourbon barrel and pepper. Not a style I will ever prefer, but this was alright.
4.0 500 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2015 vintage bottling. Pours very hazy/cloudy dark reddish brown/light copper color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, orange peel, raisin, cherry, plum, chili pepper, pine, caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee, and toasted biscuit; with light vanilla, bourbon, oak, nuttiness, roast, smoke, herbal, floral, and oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops, chili peppers, dark/bready malt, and light-moderate bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange peel, raisin, cherry, plum, chili pepper, pine, caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee, and toasted biscuit; with light vanilla, bourbon, oak, nuttiness, roast, smoke, herbal, floral, and oak/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine/citrus peel bitterness and pepper spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, orange peel, raisin, cherry, plum, chili pepper, pine, caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, herbal, floral, and oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops, chili peppers, dark/bready malt, and light-moderate bourbon barrel flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitter/spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/sticky, and lightly slick/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden; a light warmth with zero barrel booziness after the finish. Increasing pepper heat through the glass, but never overwhelming. Overall this is a great pepper spiced American strong ale! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops, chili peppers, dark/bready malt, and light-moderate bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the ABV, and despite the increasing pepper spice/heat. Barrel seemed to be overpowered a bit, but had solid presence. Base beer flavors were still showcased very well. I have had other pepper beers that were more intense on peppers/heat, yet still very drinkable. I have a very high tolerance for pepper flavors, so this was extremely easy drinking. A really enjoyable offering all around.
3.2 I knew this beer was supposed to be trash when I bought the bottle for $1.50 at my local trash rip and run booze proveyor. pours brown amber, minimal head. nose is all the barrel treatment... oak. taste has some light oak, bourbon, toasted malt, then turns to pepper heat that lingers. frankly, the beer is not good, but Its not as bad as advertised. Perhaps it is entering its sweet spot? I guess but who cares? I sure as hell don’t. next!
3.0 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer.
4.6 Hazy dark Amber with a stupendous nose of Barleywine esque tones of cherry, caramalt, date, and boozy bready tones. Crisp and delightful flavor featuring boozy caramalt, nuttiness, stone fruits and berries, and a very light Serrano pepper nuance to make it fun. Really delightful and tasty Barleywine.
2.9 500 ml bottle from Hawthorne Cellars. Pours dark brown with small tan head. Aroma is malty, sweet barleywine with bourbon, a good start. Upfront the flavours match with a malty, slightly sweet barleywine that is immediately followed by extreme spiciness from the peppers. The heat is overwhelming and immediately overpowers everything else about the beer. I love all things spicy and the combination of sweet and spicy, but Stone really went too far with the chiles on this beer and the heat detracts from it. Could have been a nice, unique combination with the right balance, but unfortunately balance was not achieved. Not recommended.
2.3 On tap at Taphouse. A bit hazy light amber with a white head. Aroma and taste dominated by strong chili. Also malt and some herbs. A bit too much burning chili.
3.2 On tap at Taphouse. Hazy amber with a lasting off-white head. Fruity chili aroma with biscuit. Sweet caramel and toffee flavour with fruity and very hot chili.
3.8 Sampled at the Great American Beer Festival 2016, Denver, CO. Dark reddish mid-brown color with a small off-white head. Sweetness, strong malt, wood and mild chili. Chili is only a nuance. Barley Winey. Tasty.
2.6 Tap@Taphouse, Copenhagen (Stone TTO 27/11/2016) - pours hazy amber orange with a beige head. Aroma and taste is overt chilli spice and sweet malty notes, lots of spice and black pepper notes, brown sugar, oaky wooden nuance, love chilli but this is abit overkill for my palate.
3.2 From tap. Pours cloudy orange with a small off white head. Aroma is herbal chili and toasted malty. Solid herbal, chili bite. Dry and burning chili. Light toasted malty. Burning chili finish.
2.1 Draught at Taphouse, Copenhagen. Clear copper/amber beer with a nice beige head. Malty caramel aroma, vanilla, grapes, some chocolate. Flavor is chilli! Come on, why!
3.4 Draft. A hazy red beer with a lazing yellowish head. The aroma has notes of chilis, caramel, and fruit. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of chilis as well as medium notes of caramel and malt, leading to a burning chili finish. Interesting, but I’m not the biggest chili lover, so a bit overboard for me.
1.9 27-SEP-2016, draft @Taphouse, Stone Tap-take-over. Hazy Brown/amber with a lasting, lacing, tan head. Aroma is Caramel, touch of hops and a disturbing, spicy pebbery note. Taste is huge burn... Ouch! No taste - just burn. Too much chili here. Not for drinking. Disgusting.
2.7 From tap at Taphouse. Ha y dark amber colour with an off-white head. Aroma and flavour of malt, alcohol, spice, chili, burning, fruit and hot.
FASS.
1.6 Had at DeFalcos at the space city sparger thing .. brown .very mild foam .. . just mostly getting peppers and heat, light wood and caramel .. too hot to be getting anything complex. pass on this and just buy tobasco and drink that .. . . my cousin jeff died today. sent flowers to the family with a little card saying "jeff is dead" so they know what the flowers are for
4.0 500 ml bottle. Pours a clear deep amber brown with a resilient, beige-yellow head. Aroma is caramel, wood, spice and vanilla. Flavor is wood, caramel, vanilla, roast, toast, brown sugar. Finish is spicy, pepper, hot. Lingering throat burn. Medium body, weak to average carbonation. Great spiced beer.
3.9 Pours a hazy amber into the glass, with a huge 5-finger stiff eggshell head that lasts forever, finally reducing to a thick cap that leaves huge amounts of pocked lacing. The nose is of malt, caramel, vanilla and pepper skins. Copious amounts of hot chili peppers (i.e. capsaicin) hit the tongue, alongside caramel, bourbon, woody notes, pale malt and bittering hops. The finish is a long, lingering hot peppery bourbon spice that is not for the "weak at heart" of pepper brews. One of (but not the hottest I’ve had) in quite some time. I’m a huge fan of pepper brews, and this does not disappoint. The mouthfeel is very prickly from the capsaicin heat, with a medium body and a very nice bourbon oak palate. The peppers shine forth prominently, as they should, but do not completely dominate the other complexities at work. In my humble opinion, this is one of the best hot pepper brews I’ve had. Super kudos to Stone for this offering!
3.2 500ml corked/caged bomber into snifter glass, cloudy golden-hued rusty amber color with tan head. Aroma notes of caramel, green chillis, white pepper, grass, wood char and light bourbon. Taste adds sour fruity hops (pineapple, some mango), bell peppers, toffee, vanilla, tad cocoa with pepper heat coming out strong towards the end. Medium-heavy body, low-moderate carbonation, creamy, tad rich with a candy caramel, peppery/pine finish. Very interesting, flavors come at you in waves for a fun ride.
3.9 Maybe I got a mild bottle, maybe sipping over the course of an hour helps tame the heat, or maybe I have a higher heat tolerance (doubtful) but I didn’t find it overbearing at all. The barrel was rather apparent in the nose with hops and peppers hiding behind boozy vanilla and bready sweet malt. Beautiful dark red with a sticky light tan head that dissipated quickly. Taste was big. Similar to bba arrogant bastard but less sweet. By the time you figure out what’s going on in the base the peppers kick in and build as you continue drinking. It had a clean mouth feel until the bottom of the bottle where an oily even hotter glass was had.
3.4 Dark amber with beige head. Some citrus, caramel, dark fruit, and spices. Flavor is all over the place mostly Arrogant Bastard mixed with some oak and peppers which was not hot. I expected heat. Aftertaste has some pepper spice. Overall I like even I’d Greg doesnt
2.9 Malt sweetness vanilla and oak with a slight underlying spicy fills my nose from this full bodied pour of a brownish super cloudy brew with a small off white head. The taste is full bodied and sweet with a good amount of bitterness and oak with a slight touch of vanilla all up front. As you swallow and the aftertaste comes in you get the burn of the peppers in your throat. Not overpowering by any means but leaves your mouth a bit warm.
2.7 Bottle, shared at a beer tasting @ Beer Temple - thanks Peter for providing these beers. Amber/red color, hazy. Not much head. Aroma’s: caramel, vegetables. Retronasal it’s caramel, Maggi, pepper. Flavor is moderate sweet, moderate bitter, weird.Strong alcohol feel. Pepper heat kicks in quite quickly. Medium to full bodied. Finish is hot, moderate bitter.
2.4 This made Dan cry :-). Spicy, chile, green, raw green, spicy, hot, maybe even awful, approaching an onion, character, and a bit of chile sweetness as well, smells like dried habaneros. Spicy, hot, green chile, a lingering heat that gets hot, with very little base beer, perhaps some barrel heat / spiciness that serves to accentuate the chile character with spice and hot alcohol. Another dud, that isn’t quite so bad as Punishment, a bit less spicy, perhaps some oak, but very little to non-existent base beer character.
2.5 Bottle. It poured a cloudy brown color with a white head. The aroma was of peppercorn, grass, malts and a hint of spice. The taste was of peppers, heat, spice with a malty background. Not sure what to think. Hmmm.
1.4 Bottle, looks like a mistake. Brown pour with tan head. Dark malts, boozy aromas, light spice and pepper tones. Flavor is super hot, peppers, spice, boozy and malty tones.
